MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL
This week, the College gathered to celebrate NAIDOC Week. It was a time to learn, reflect and appreciate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is more than just an observance; it is a celebration of the oldest living cultures on earth and an opportunity to build bridges of understanding and respect.
I have spoken recently with our students about who we are as a community. I have spoken about JT PRIDE and the Catholic values that define who we are. These values are abstract, I can't hold them in my hands, but they are as real and significant as any physical object. Thursday’s NAIDOC assembly offered us the opportunity to make ideas of respect, hope and pride into concrete experiences.
The theme of NAIDOC 2024 speaks to us about the importance of coming together to recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This theme resonates deeply with our commitment to education at John Therry, as it underscores the role that learning plays in creating opportunities and fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
Education is the key to discovering potential and enacting your purpose - and knowing our purpose touches on our Catholic and Marist values. It is only through education and true listening, presence, that we can learn about the rich histories, stories, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and we were fortunate to hear these stories on Thursday. By being present and walking together, we not only honour these cultures but also enrich our own understanding of the world.
There is a belief that if something is abstract, it is difficult to measure. The abstractions of hope, respect and pride were measured during our NAIDOC celebration through our staff, students and community. There was a palpable sense of purpose, respect and dedication evident. Our students were the measures of respect, inclusion and connection. Through their actions and words, our students, staff and community demonstrated that John Therry is a place where everyone is valued and respected, and where the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are recognised and celebrated. This should not be abstract, but should be visible and evident every day.
I remind our community that this Sunday is Aboriginal Sunday, and our Bishop will be celebrating mass this Sunday at 11am at Holy Trinity Church Minto. I would also like to thank the staff and students who created and led Thursday’s NAIDOC assembly. Their care and passion was evident.
As we conclude Term 2, I thank the staff of John Therry for their commitment to our students and their learning. I also wish all students a safe and restful break. We are looking forward to the start of Term 3.
Important Reminder: Download or Print Your Child’s School Reports
Dear Parents,
As Semester 1 comes to a close, we would like to remind you to download or print your child's school reports.
Please note that once your child leaves the school, you will no longer have access to these documents. To ensure you have a record of your child’s academic progress and achievements, we recommend saving or printing the reports as soon as possible.
Throughout Term 2, JTCC was thrilled to welcome the My Strengths team to the college to conduct Wellbeing incursions for Years 7, 10, and 11. These students participated in strengths-based workshops designed to help uncover their unique, individual strengths and understand how to leverage them effectively in their academic journey and beyond.
During the workshops, students learned how to:
- Identify their top 5 strengths through guided assessments.
- Apply these strengths to achieve academic and personal goals.
- Connect with peers who share similar strengths and interests.
- Gain insights from experienced facilitators on maximizing their potential.
In addition to the student workshops, the Leaders of Wellbeing recently completed facilitator training with the My Strengths team. They are now prepared to make a positive impact on their year groups and the college community through upcoming pastoral lessons.
Both staff and students found the My Strengths incursions to be a valuable experience that not only enhanced self-awareness but also provided practical tools for personal and academic growth. Integrating these insights into future pastoral care lessons will be a great way to further support and encourage student well-being.
Looking ahead to early Term 3, we are eagerly anticipating Year 8's participation in the My Strengths program, building on the positive outcomes and enthusiasm seen in previous sessions with Years 7, 10, and 11.
We spoke to some students to hear their thoughts on the incursion, and here's what they had to say:
Sofia (Year 11)
Tell us your top strength you discovered today
Today I participated in the My Strengths incursion, discovering my top strength to be Purpose. For me, purpose means that I am going to continue to help others all my life, continuing to advocate for others. I want to make a change in politics and spend all my time, money, effort, and strength assisting other people.
What would your dream future look like?
My dream future would be a world where equity is of the utmost importance, and people chose love over war. A long-term goal of mine is to become the Prime Minister, but making a significant difference in women's affairs and human rights is where I want to be.
Are there any other strengths of yours that play into your future plans?
I have a strong leadership strength which I think will help me a lot. I care a lot about harmony which was another one of my strengths I found today. I want people to live their life without having to experience horrible conflict and I want to be the glue that holds that together.
Laura (Year 11)
Tell us your top strength you discovered today
Today I participated in the My Strengths incursion and found my top strength to be Practical. I like to be hands-on and in the action all the time.
What does that strength mean for the way you live or the things you are interested in?
I will always be within the action and doing things that are very physical and practical in my life.
Are you gifted in sport or the way you learn?
My practical strength definitely plays into my sporting community, as well as learning through hands-on activities.
What does your future look like?
I have no idea what my future looks like, but maybe I can use some of my strengths that I learnt today to figure out what I want to do.
Using the skills and knowledge imparted on them through the incursion, students ranked their top 3 strengths that they would like to further develop:
YEAR 7 | 1. Energetic | 2. Humour | 3. Loyalty |
YEAR 10 | 1. Loyalty | 2. Practical | 3. Harmony |
YEAR 11 | 1. Practical | 2. Loyalty | 3. Winner |
The My Strengths workshops have truly made a positive impact on our students, and we look forward to continuing this journey of self-discovery and growth.
Year 12 Biology Students Visit the Museum of Human Disease at UNSW
On the 25th of June, Year 12 Biology students embarked on an enlightening visit to the Museum of Human Disease at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The excursion was an invaluable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of both infectious and non-infectious diseases, as well as genetic change and heredity.
One of the highlights of the trip was the chance to view real human specimens. These specimens, donated by patients who had suffered from various diseases, provided a tangible and impactful way for students to connect theory with reality. Seeing the physical manifestations of different diseases helped to solidify the students' understanding and left a lasting impression.
Beyond the educational aspects, the students also had a taste of university life. During their free time, they explored the UNSW campus, soaking in the atmosphere of a bustling university environment. This glimpse into university life was not only enjoyable but also inspiring, as it allowed the students to envision their potential futures in higher education.
Year 12 Hospitality and Cookery Students Shine in Catering Event
Last Friday, our Year 12 Hospitality and Cookery students successfully completed their catering event assessment task, and their performance was nothing short of outstanding. The event was a testament to the students' talent, dedication, and hard work, featuring an array of fantastic food and delightful mocktails that impressed all who attended.
Congratulations to all the students involved—you have made us proud!
This term, our Year 8 English students have been learning about poetry. In commemoration of NAIDOC week (7 - 14 July 2024), students created blackout poems using an extract from Kevin Rudd's inaugural speech to the nation, a formal "Apology to Australia's Indigenous People". Students experimented with form, portraying traditional Indigenous artwork, in order to communicate a message about the ongoing effects resulting from the Stolen Generation and other government policies on Australia's First Nations people. A selection of works are attached.
On Thursday, June 6th, 2024, Year 10 students from John Therry Catholic High School attended the Macarthur Careers Expo with great enthusiasm, proudly representing our school.
Throughout the afternoon, our students demonstrated exceptional behaviour and engagement. They interacted thoughtfully with representatives from various universities, TAFE institutions, and trade organisations, asking insightful questions and gathering valuable information to help shape their future career paths. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn were truly commendable.
Students explored a variety of university programs, discussing course options, campus life, and scholarship opportunities. Many representatives praised our students for their mature inquiries and genuine interest in higher education.
For those interested in vocational training and trades, the expo provided a wealth of information. Our students were keen to understand the practical aspects of these pathways and the skills required, engaging in meaningful conversations with industry professionals.
The event organisers and exhibitors provided positive feedback regarding our students' organisation and preparedness, especially with their use of the planning booklets distributed as part of the Transition and Pathways Program (TAPP).
Following the expo, we encourage parents and carers to continue the conversation to guide subject selection and support our students in their future educational and career decisions.
Year 10 Students Explore University Life at Fast Forward Event
On Wednesday, June 5th, nine Year 10 students from John Therry Catholic High School participated in the Fast Forward Program alongside other local schools. The University Day, themed “Destinations Unlimited,” offered a travel-inspired experience, allowing students to explore the university campus and its diverse offerings.
Throughout the day, students engaged in various activities designed to provide insights into university life and study pathways. They toured university facilities and listened to current students share their personal experiences. Highlights included a learning session in a moot courtroom, simulating real courtroom proceedings, and a visit to the medical research building, where students delved into anatomy studies.
The program focused on helping students discuss their career aspirations and discover possible study pathways. It continued to build their skills and confidence, fostering problem-solving abilities and encouraging creativity through interactive workshops. These sessions allowed students to collaborate with peers from other schools and interact with program staff, university faculty, and current students.
The day was a resounding success, with students thoroughly enjoying the experience. They eagerly anticipate continuing with the Fast Forward Program in 2025.
HSC Masterclasses: Enhancing Skills and Confidence for Exam Success
From Week 3 to Week 10 of Term 2, HSC students at John Therry Catholic High School participated in intensive Masterclasses across a majority of their courses. The subjects covered included:
- English
- Mathematics
- Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Investigating Science
- Business Studies, Legal Studies, Society & Culture & Modern History

Additionally, Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 3 are reserved for Masterclasses in CAFS and PDHPE.
The focus of these classes was on teacher-identified HSC skills required to help students approach their Trial HSC exams and the final HSC exams with more confidence and success. Students were engaged and very positive about the amount of learning they did during these classes.
This weeks highlight was the Business Studies Masterclass on Tuesday, 4th July, which focused on Multiple Choice skills. Students were particularly engaged and seemed to gain a lot from this session, further preparing them for their upcoming exams.
HSC Trial exams begin on Monday of Week 3 (5th August 2024) and conclude on Monday of Week 5 (19th August 2024). The College would like to wish all our HSC students the best of luck for their exams.
Exploring the art of Japanese cuisine!
On Tuesday the 25th of June, our Year 9 Japanese class had a blast learning to make okonomiyaki and practising calligraphy. This was a fantastic way for our students to immerse themselves into Japanese culture!
Our Year 11 students enjoyed a feast of inarizushi, temakizushi, sushi, and misoshiru, while learning to create these delectable dishes themselves. From the kitchen to the table, a taste of Japan that's perfect for recreating at home!
Bubble Tea at JT
This past Friday, our Year 9 and 10 students studying Chinese delighted our Year 8 students with a hands-on cultural experience. They prepared a diverse array of bubble teas, and the Year 8 students practised their linguistic skills by ordering in Mandarin and using Renminbi, the official currency of China. Such enriching activities foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and language, whilst also enabling students to use real-life scenarios to practise their mandarin. Thank you to Mr Bateman for organising this incredible immersive experience for our students! Well done to all involved!

MISA PREMIERS What a win! Our best team effort all year saw us become MISA premiers for 3 years in a row!! We were scrambling for players at recess and we were fortunate enough to get Kale Houston and Dylan Thorne to fill in for us. Every player in the team ripped in from the kick off and were desperate to bring the trophy back to JT led by Cooper Tonna, Jordan Truckle and Ben Mostyn. These boys set the standard and all the rest followed. Other highlights include: Beau Tones with the big don’t argue down the sideline, Dylan Thorne getting a pie on debut, Truck doing some serious damage to their backs and Tony off the back fence. Congratulations on a great season boys! A pleasure to coach! #3peat |

11/12 Boys Soccer Mr Williamson |
Won 1-0 v BAC |
Congratulations to the all conquering Senior Boys Soccer team on a great win and an outstanding season. Even without Captain Darcy the team dominated again but found goals difficult to come by. Increased composure in the second half saw chances hit the post and the crossbar and balloon over the bar. Perseverance and attitude led to a winner from Ethan Soares. Well done to all participants. The first win at MISA for a long time and a season of not only being undefeated but also no draws. Scoring 14 goals with 1 against. |

7 - 9 Mixed Frisbee Mr Bodeker |
Vs MCCC 6-6 Joint Premiers |
Congratulations to the undefeated 7-9 Mixed Frisbee Team who managed to secure the premiership against MCCC. After 40 minutes of intense and highly skilful frisbee, the two teams could not be separated and there was unfortunately no further time could be added on and the result was a 6-6 draw. Both teams have been crowned premiers, however we will take pride in knowing we went through the season undefeated and the team should be congratulated for their successes this season. Well done on a great season. |

Great comeback in the 2nd innings for a close finish, tieing the score. Unfortunately a big home run from their first batter saw us slip behind. A much improved fielding effort with a great double play at one point.MVP Mitchell Price for double play and a great at bat. |

MISA Dance
In just under 7 weeks the JTCC Dance Team produced a 9 ½ minute work of Dance Artistry that featured at the MISA Dance festival 2024. The girls were able to combine their divers dance styles and experiences to co create a layered and meaningful work that communicated themes around silencing negative voices, developing positive self-concepts, acknowledging a Creator God’s presence and responding to the Call of Mary to inspire and manifest your true higher sense of self. The theme tied in well to our recent Marist celebration around the power of pray and in following the Light to realise your destiny. The work also featured Dance Film which won favour with MISA officials and the crowd. The girls have really built a strong bond through this wonderful experience and their connection was evident in their beautiful dancing and unified spirit. A strong message was delivered by JTCC which purports Dance as a relevant Artform promoting corporeal, artistic, spiritual and much needed cultural experience for our dancers and for the community. We look forward to continued participation and excellence in Dance at JTCC.
Please congratulate the MISA Dance Team 2024 - Audrey Antonino, Kiana Blackwell, Eliza Byrnes, Hannah Dale, Amelia Garus, Hollie Gorman, Maddi Giles, Paige Grey, Paige Halliday, Sarina Jameso, Khloe Michelutti, Halle Neison, Ella Savage, Maddy Stevens, Finlay Thomas, Tehilla Vimbainashe Chriwa
Diocesan and Pathways update
As term 2 draws to a close, we have finished off with a very successful campaign at a range of Diocesan carnivals across multiple sports. We’ve had a number of students who are out on representative duties at various NSWCCC events, and we are so pleased to hear of their great success. Please see below some of our students who have had outstanding results in our pathway programs.
Diocesan Open Boys Volleyball
Rarely would there have been a more predictable Diocesan victory than the one achieved by the JT Senior Boys volleyball team. Many of the other schools that presented as challengers on the day were in awe of the skills and abilities of this team.
The journey began back in year 9 with involvement in MISA that led to a keen interest in the sport that progressed to hours and hours of training. The core trio of Cody Meisenhofen, Lachlan Phiousodarith and William Chanhdara have taken school volleyball to another level with their skills and training. All three regularly play outside school with Cody going on to be chosen for the Australian team in his age group.
Combined with the athleticism of their teammates, the court movement, decision making and skill execution are spectacular. Opposition players and coaches were left stunned and speechless as well struck spikes whizzed past their ears or, on the odd occasion, into their faces.
All games were won in convincing fashion, including the final. Results as follows:
- St John’s 33-18
- St Francis 34-21
- St Joseph’s 49-13
- Corpus Christi 46-18
- Edmund Rice 39-20
Final Mt Carmel 2 sets (15-7 and 15-13)
A total of 241 rallies won and 120 lost on the day.
The standard of volleyball has seen a significant improvement over the last few years. The standard at JT has elevated far more rapidly. It is pleasing to see that more and more students are playing on a regular basis, with the expectation that playing levels will continue to rise.
Congratulations to the above group of young men. Not only for their first class playing ability but more importantly for the graciousness on the court, kerfuffle less nature of involvement and sportsmanship. Games were conducted without issue, in part due to the recognition that this group of boys were simply better at the game. (Mr Willamson)
(L to R): Garang Bol, Adrian Narvais, Coby Hilton, Cody Meisenhofen, Lachlan Phiousodarith, Christian Marquez, William Chanhdara.
Diocesan Open Girls Volleyball
On Wednesday 26th June I had the privilege of taking seven amazing students to the Diocesan Volleyball Championships. I was very impressed with their desire to be present and represent the school so passionately. We had trained numerous times and the girls were keen to do well. We did however luck out as the draw was a little biased as we had the more difficult schools in our pool.
Our girls showed immense determination and talent as they played four other schools in pool A. They easily won their first two games against St. Benedict’s and St Joseph's practising their net skills and showcasing their strong serves. The match against St. Patrick’s was another close tussle at the beginning but we lost focus mid game which caused them to lose overall. This was disappointing for the girls. The last game in the pool was against Mt. Carmel (by far the most dominant team of the day!) where the JT girls were a little intimidated by their serves. They held their own throughout the match however were unsuccessful at the conclusion of the game. In all four games they played solidly exhibiting remarkable teamwork and skills around the court but they did tire as they did not get a break from playing or umpiring for nearly 2 hours. Since they placed third in their pool they played Holy Spirit College for the playoff for 5th/6th. This was an extremely easy win for the team ending the day with a 5th placing. The two teams in the grand final were the only teams that had defeated them all day.
These girls were excellent ambassadors for the school, displaying fabulous sportsmanship and exceptional school spirit. Part of the expectation of the day is for all the teams to do duty and referee at least three games. The JT girls, especially Gese, did a terrific job at this task. Well done once again to all team members

Diocesan Football Playoffs
A talented collection of players from Years 8-10 represented John Therry at this year's Diocesan Football Playoffs.
We departed Campbelltown in a frosty 1 degree morning and the boys soon warmed up with the Campbelltown beats.
Our first game against Corpus Christi was a challenge with the opposition fielding several big, strong and talented footballers.
It qas a fairly even contest, with JT playing dome quality football through the middle, with Jaidon Cosmidis, Emerson Yevenes and Davonne Plaatjies putting on a clinic of 1 touch combination passes.
We suffered a minor setback when Corpus punished off a sloppy pass when playing out from the back. We rebounded well, with a quick counter of our own to level the scores up when Brooklyn Osborne applied some pressure creating an error and Emilio Miranda finishing off the goal.
JT hung tough, and accumulated multiple opportunities in the final third, and Ben Keers was lucky to score a quality goal off the back of a sensational killer pass from Emerson Yevenes. JT progressed to the final after a hard fought 2-1 win.
After a tight and very physical game the boys then faced off a very talented and successful Edmund Rice team.
Unfortunately we started the game a little flat and ERC dominated field possession with an overloading formation, we kept the JT boys in defensive positions. They battled hard but struggled to repeat their first match heroics, and eventually were defeated 3 - 1.
The future of JT is in good hands as we welcome Lucas Failla, Cooper Firman and Lucas Alvarado who all played key roles in todays games, with Lucas Alvarado scoring a great goal in our final game.
Back: Cooper Firman, Brady Wilson, Blake Neale, Lucas Failla, Aidan Murray, Jaidon Cosmidis, Jon Vasoliopoulos, Alec Sanchez, Sully O’Dwyer

JTCC Athletics Carnival
The athletics carnival's final events on June 20th have concluded with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the students who participated in the Javelin and High Jump events on Thursday of Week 8. Special appreciation goes to Mr. Cook, Ms. Moon, and Mr. Muvceski for their invaluable assistance to Mrs. Roberts in successfully completing these events.
The Javelin competition was particularly exciting, with several records being shattered. Congratulations to all the athletes who pushed their limits and set new benchmarks!
In the High Jump event, we faced an unfortunate challenge due to equipment issues, which prevented us from verifying new records. This was especially disappointing for the 16 Years Boys category, where both Brooklyn Osborne and Jackson Schulstad would have surpassed the current record. We eagerly await their performances at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival in August, where their verified jumps will be recorded.
A big congratulations to Brooklyn Osborne and Jackson Schulstad, and to all our athletes for their remarkable efforts. We look forward to seeing our JTCC team shine at the Diocesan Carnival in August. Best of luck to everyone participating!
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to celebrate our students' achievements in athletics!

Diocesan Open Girls Hockey
The girls' team embarked on an exciting journey at the diocesan hockey tournament held at Narellan, facing off against formidable opponents including St. Mary's, Corpus Christi, Holy Spirit, and Mount Carmel. Despite the challenging outcomes, with our team experiencing losses in each match, the spirit and dedication displayed by the girls were truly commendable.
Hockey was a new sport for most of our players, but their willingness to embrace this unfamiliar territory was inspiring. From the very start, the girls demonstrated an admirable attitude, ready to play in whatever position was necessary to support their team. This flexibility and team spirit were essential as they navigated through the tournament.
As the day progressed, the team's development was evident with a few missed opportunities in the opposing end. The initial nervousness gave way to growing confidence and skill, showcasing their quick learning and adaptability. Each match brought new lessons and experiences, contributing to their growth as hockey players.
While the scores did not reflect victories, the true win was in the effort, teamwork, and determination displayed by the girls. Congratulations to the team for their hard work and perseverance! Thank you to the Year 12’s for stepping up when we were down on players and to the others - We look forward to seeing how they build on this experience in the future.
