The Ascension of Jesus: A Message of Hope and Purpose
This week we mark the feast of the Ascension—an event that celebrates Jesus returning to heaven, 40 days after Easter. It’s a powerful moment in the Christian story, not just because Jesus departs, but because of what He leaves behind.
The Ascension reminds us that we are not alone. Before He ascended, Jesus promised His followers that they would receive the Holy Spirit and be strengthened to continue His work—spreading love, compassion, peace, and justice in the world. For Christians, this moment is not an ending, but a new beginning.
Later in the newsletter is an article on students from John Therry who recently completed the sacramental program and received all their sacraments at a special Mass. I particularly thank Mr Ryan Suares who led this whole program and provided this opportunity for our students, and Father Sarkis who supported this and enabled this to happen. We plan to provide this program every few years and invite students and families to consider whether this is something they would like to do.
Attendance update
Attendance rate: 91%
As at Term 2 Week 4
This week at assembly, I spoke about the importance of regular attendance and how it prepares students for life beyond school. In Australia, the average full-time worker receives 10 sick days across 261 working days per year—equating to a 96% attendance rate. Currently, 285 of our students have an attendance rate of 96% or higher.
My message to students is simple: developing strong attendance habits now sets the foundation for future success. I encourage all students to check their current attendance rate on Compass and set personal goals to improve over the coming term.
Recent Highlights
It’s been another busy and productive fortnight filled with meaningful events.
Our Year 11 and 12 Student Conferences provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on learning progress and plan ahead to help every student achieve their potential at John Therry. Thank you to all families who were able to attend.
We also welcomed Year 7 students and their families to a special event celebrating “77 Days of Year 7.” It was a wonderful evening where students introduced their parents to friends and mentors, and we shared a video time capsule that will become a treasured memory by the time of their Year 12 formal.
This edition of the newsletter features more highlights from across our school community. I’m continually inspired by the incredible talents, dedication, and achievements of our students and teachers. I hope you enjoy reading about all that has been happening at John Therry.
In today's rapidly evolving world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives and will undoubtedly play a significant role in our children's futures – from their education to their careers.
To help you navigate this exciting and sometimes complex topic, JT is considering hosting an after-hours information session dedicated to understanding AI. We want to ensure this session is valuable, relevant, and addresses your specific questions and interests.
We Need Your Input!
To help us design the best possible session, we've created a short survey. Your feedback will be invaluable in shaping the content, format, and timing of this potential event. The survey also includes a few quick questions to help us gauge current understanding of AI topics, including important aspects like AI bias.
Why Your Participation Matters:
- Tailored Content: Your answers will help us focus on the AI topics you care most about.
- Convenient Timing: Let us know what time works best for you.
- Gauge Interest: Help us understand the level of interest within our parent community.
The survey should only take about 5-7 minutes to complete.
Please click here to access the survey
We kindly request you complete the survey by next Friday (13th June) so we can begin planning. I am also hoping to lock in a guest speaker from CENET to help answer any of your questions on the night as well.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We believe that by working together, we can better prepare our students for a future where AI is commonplace.
If you have any immediate questions, please don't hesitate to contact Mr Jefferys via email at jefferysh01@dow.catholic.edu.
ROTARY CLUB YOUTH EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Celebrating Excellence at the 17th Rotary Club Youth Excellence Awards
The Wests Leagues Club in Campbelltown played host to the 17th Rotary Club Youth Excellence Awards on May 22nd, 2025, and the John Therry Catholic College community has much to celebrate!
We extend our congratulations to our talented students who received nominations: Skye McVerry, Annaleise Hall, Dominic Baker, and Sullivan O’Dwyer. A special acknowledgment goes to Dominic Baker, who was recognized as 'Highly Recommended' in the Sport category.
Adding to the evening's accolades, two of our dedicated teachers were nominated for the Campbelltown ‘Teacher of the Year’ award. We are incredibly proud to announce that Ms J. Donaldson received the ‘Highly Commended’ award, and the prestigious ‘Teacher of the Year’ award was presented to the remarkable Ms T Harris! This is a truly outstanding achievement for Ms Harris and a testament to the dedication of all our nominees.
The entire John Therry community is immensely proud of these students and teachers and their well-deserved recognition.

OUR STUDENTS SHINE A LIGHT ON AI IN EDUCATION
We are incredibly proud to share a wonderful example of our students leading the way in important digital conversations. Recently, Ethan Walker and Aiden Bryant (Year 10), alongside Lilly Avalos and Hemakshi Kesani (Year 11), represented our school with distinction as part of an expert panel discussing Artificial Intelligence in education.
Our talented students confidently tackled challenging questions about how both students and teachers are navigating the use of AI, truly enlightening the room with their thoughtful responses and articulate insights. Mr Jefferys, who accompanied them, received numerous commendations from audience members deeply impressed by our students' knowledge and presentation skills. While they certainly left a significant intellectual mark, we also hear they made a rather successful haul of vendor merchandise – a well-deserved perk for their outstanding efforts! This experience underscores our commitment to fostering critical engagement with emerging technologies and empowering our students to become informed, responsible digital citizens.
NSW JUNIOR CHESS LEAGUE WINNERS
Chess Team Dominates on Memorable Tuesday
Tuesday, May 27th, proved to be an exceptional day for the John Therry Chess Team, filled with impressive victories and memorable moments on the board.
The standout performance of the day belonged to Jackson Schulstad, who achieved a perfect score, winning all seven of his games! One particular match went down to the wire, with Jackson securing a thrilling checkmate with just one second remaining on the clock. His elation was palpable, while his opponent was left in stunned disbelief.
The team also faced off against fellow Marist school, St. Greg's, in a highly anticipated matchup. Our players demonstrated their strength and teamwork, securing a decisive victory with a score of 3.5 - 0.5.
The encounter against the tournament favorites, Sefton High, proved to be the most challenging of the day. Our team rose to the occasion, providing stiff competition in every game. In a nail-biting contest, John Therry emerged victorious with a score of 2.5 to Sefton's 1.5. A particularly captivating moment involved Khir, who maintained remarkable composure despite a rook blunder, while his opponent theatrically "air-signed" their calculated moves – a testament to the intense mental battle unfolding.
Behind the scenes, Dennis played an invaluable role as the team manager. His dedication to tracking scores, providing insightful counsel to the players, and representing the College with distinction made a significant contribution to the team's success.
Overall, it was a fantastic day of chess for the team, culminating in an impressive cumulative score of 24 out of a possible 28 points. Congratulations to all the players and Dennis for their outstanding efforts! We look forward to their continued success.

Honouring Resilience: Year 7 Students Participate in Moving Sorry Day Commemoration
On Wednesday 21st May, our Year 7 Aboriginal students participated in a profoundly moving Sorry Day commemoration, an experience that fostered empathy, understanding, and respect for Australia's Indigenous history. The day was a powerful reminder of the Stolen Generations and the ongoing journey towards healing and reconciliation.
Our students played an active and respectful role in the proceedings. They performed a touching tribute, demonstrating their commitment to acknowledging the past and building a more inclusive future. Following their performance, they had the privilege of serving food to the elders present, a gesture of respect and community spirit that was warmly received.
The most poignant part of the day was undoubtedly listening to the emotional story of Aunty Fay Moseley. Aunty Fay, a survivor of the Stolen Generations, bravely shared her personal experience of being taken from her family and placed in the Cootamundra Girls' Home. Her powerful testimony offered a first-hand account of the profound trauma and enduring impact of these policies, leaving a lasting impression on our students.
Aunty Fay's story provided an invaluable opportunity for our Year 7s to connect with history on a deeply personal level, moving beyond textbooks to understand the human cost of past injustices. Her resilience and willingness to share her story are a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ongoing importance of Sorry Day.
We commend our Year 7 students for their mature and respectful engagement throughout the day. Their participation in this significant event not only educated them about a crucial period in Australian history but also instilled in them the values of compassion, reconciliation, and social justice. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to their growth as informed and empathetic global citizens.

JOHN THERRY SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM
A Joyful Celebration of Faith – Our Sacramental Program
What a beautiful journey it has been! Over the past year, a small but spirited group of students from our school community embarked on a special path—the Sacramental Program, preparing to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
Together, we explored the heart of our Catholic faith, asking big questions like Who is Jesus?, Why the Church?, and What is the Eucharist? Along the way, students discovered the power of prayer, the richness of the Creed, and the joy of growing closer to God. It was a time of learning, reflection, and deep personal growth.
Last month, this journey came to a joyful culmination as the students received their Sacraments at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Parish, Rosemeadow. It was a truly special Mass, celebrated with love and reverence—thanks to the warm guidance of Fr Chris Sarkis, Mr Brad McAlister, and the dedicated staff of John Therry Catholic College.
We offer our heartfelt congratulations to each student who received their Sacraments—you are now fully initiated members of our Catholic family! May your faith continue to grow and flourish in the years ahead.
A big thank you to everyone in our school and parish community who supported and prayed for our students along the way. Your presence and encouragement made all the difference.
FOCUS ON ABILITY - NOVA EMPLOYMENT
Students recently took part in a fantastic Focus on Ability Day with NOVA Employment, where they explored the power of storytelling through film. The event, part of the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival, celebrates the talents and stories of people with a disability. Throughout the day, students showed great creativity and teamwork as they developed thoughtful and original ideas for their own short films. Many were excited by the opportunity to share their ideas on a bigger platform and are now keen to enter the national competition. It was an inspiring day that encouraged inclusion, creativity and confidence.
A Celebration of Culture and Opportunity
On Wednesday 21 May, students from across the Diocese of Wollongong gathered at the Kiama Pavilion for Bangawarra Day – an event that blended cultural connection with career exploration.
The day began with a welcome onto Dharawal Country and a Smoking Ceremony, led by local Elders and our John Therry Catholic College dancers. We were proud of our students who took part in the introduction and welcome to the day. Through traditional dance and music, they contributed in a meaningful way to the opening of the event. Their involvement reflected the importance of culture and community and helped set a respectful tone for the day.
Students also heard from former Bangawarra participants, including our very own Kalan Nau, who shared how their experiences at previous events helped shape their pathway into further education and training. Hearing their stories allowed current students to relate and see what’s possible when culture, community and career come together.
Students then had the opportunity to connect with a wide range of career exhibitors, including training organisations, universities and community services. The event encouraged students to explore pathways aligned with their passions.
Thank you to everyone involved in making the day a valuable experience.

YEAR 7 VACCINATIONS AND YEARS 8-12 CATCHUPS
Dear Parents and Guardians
This is to inform you about the upcoming NSW School Vaccination Program visit for Year 7 students at John Therry Catholic College on Thursday, 5th June 2025.
The program offers free vaccines to all students, including those who do not have a Medicare card. Please be aware that your child will only be vaccinated at school if we have received your consent. We encourage you to provide your consent online, which is the preferred method.
For families who cannot provide consent online (e.g., due to not having a Medicare card, internet access, or computer literacy), the school has been provided with paper consent forms. If you require a paper consent form, please contact the school directly.
It's important to note that if you return a signed paper consent form to the school, we kindly request that the form is handed in a week before the vaccinations.
Translated resources are available for parents from non-English speaking backgrounds at:
To help the clinic run smoothly, we ask that students wear their sports uniform on the day to allow easy access to their upper arms for vaccination.
For more information regarding the 2025 NSW School Vaccination Program, please see the below flyers or visit NSW School Vaccination Program.
JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 2, Week 5
Term 2 is shaping up to be an exciting one, with a full calendar of school, MISA, and Diocesan competitions, as well as a host of sport pathway opportunities, there’s plenty to inspire, challenge, and motivate our students to get involved and give it their best.
We are eagerly looking ahead to our College Athletics Carnival in Week 6, set to take place at the newly refurbished Campbelltown Athletics Stadium. This state-of-the-art facility promises to elevate the event experience for students and spectators alike. A reminder that all relevant details can be found on the Compass Event.
In Week 7, our students will represent JTCC at the Diocese Netball Carnival—one of the biggest days on our sporting calendar. This year brings the exciting addition of an Open Boys division, and the response has been phenomenal, with nearly 40 boys from Years 10–12 trialling for selection under the guidance of Ms Kelleher. In total, JTCC will be sending five teams across various divisions, demonstrating the strength and depth of our netball program. We can’t wait to see our teams compete with energy, skill, and sportsmanship on the day.
Despite the enthusiasm and high levels of participation, Term 2 has not been without its challenges. Wet weather in the early weeks has caused disruptions, including the postponement of both the Diocese Cross Country Carnival and the Open Girls Football Championships. In addition, most of the outdoor fixtures for MISA Round 2 were cancelled due to unsafe playing conditions. While disappointing, our students have responded with resilience and positivity, showing that true JT Pride isn’t just about winning—it's about commitment, adaptability, and teamwork no matter the circumstances.
Even amid these setbacks, we’ve seen numerous moments that embody JT Pride. From outstanding efforts at school trials and training sessions, to the leadership shown by senior students supporting younger peers, and the passionate displays of sportsmanship across all competitions—our students continue to represent the College with excellence, integrity, and spirit.
With the term well underway and more exciting opportunities on the horizon, we look forward to celebrating the continued achievements and growth of our students across all facets of sport.
Go JTCC!

A much improved performance today with increased effort and teamwork the notable contributing factors. Well done to Captain Timmer for scoring a MISA hat-trick. He joins a prestigious and select list of past achievers of this award. Ably supported by Jon and Alessandro in the midfield. Jaidon provided a constant threat in the front line, while the foundation of success was the back four and Sidney’s support in goal. Looking ahead with renewed hope for success in the competition. |

It wasn’t the best game today for our 10–12 Girls Football team, coming up against a strong St Pat’s side. They put four goals past us in the first half and added another two in the second. While the scoreboard didn’t go our way, it was certainly a valuable learning experience. Most of the girls showed great determination and fought right to the final whistle. We now look ahead to Round 4 next week with heads held high and plenty to build on. MVP this week is Isabella Drake who held the midfield and did her best to cover ground in both offence and defence. |

A comprehensive victory for the 7-9 Frisbee team who dominated Mt Carmel from start to finish and ran away 37-3 winners. I could not fault their performance and effort throughout the game with several standouts displaying some great understanding of the frisbee rules and skills. The boys were dominant in defense and worked extremely well with the girls from start to finish. It was extremely pleasing to see the girls develop their throwing and catching skills, often combining with one another to create scoring chances. It was difficult to choose an MVP this week, but Rico and Tamariz were exceptional and led the team to victory. Well done. |

The match against Broughton Anglican College (BAC) was one to remember! JT started with a solid defensive stance but had some trouble finding their rhythm on offence in the first half. However, everything changed in the second half. JT's zone defence became a formidable force, transforming defensive stops into fast break points that left BAC struggling to catch up. With the team firing on all cylinders, JT pulled away to secure a 34-19 victory. A standout on the court was Cooper Firman, who delivered an MVP-worthy performance. Cooper was exceptional at both ends of the floor, leading the defensive effort and contributing crucial points that energised the team. His leadership and skill were pivotal in turning the game's momentum in JT's favour. As the team looks ahead with a week off to train, there's a great opportunity to refine their strategies and continue building on this impressive win. JT fans can look forward to seeing their team back in action with even more energy and determination! Well done, JT!l |

JTCC vs Broughton. Though the score doesn’t reflect it, spirits were high as the girls achieved a personal best on scoring with the highest total amount yet ! Confidence is building on the offensive end and with each game we are improving. Ivy Barty had a fantastic game defensively, earning lots of rebounds that let us have a second opportunity at scoring. |

A tough game against great opposition with many rep players. We were competitive in the first half but then Mt Carmel ran away with the game. A much improved performance this week saw a better result for the boys. The ground fielding and catching saw us dismiss Broughton for 2 in their second innings. Unfortunately we couldn’t capitalise on this in our 2nd at bat. Josh Carlin performed very well at bat and pulled off a great ground ball save during fielding. |

A slow start from the boys, despite having the downhill advantage and the wind behind us. Completion was the struggle again this week, with only one completed set at half time. We need to keep it simple, rather than look for the offload which often leads to a handover. Completion is everything in this game! Once we started the second half, we were a different team. The boys played simple footy, with Benji and Cory leading the way through the guts, ultimately resulting in a few tries for the boys. |

It was great to get out onto the field to play some Rugby League against a tough St Benedict’s team. Piper Regan and Kiana Blackwell were great in attack with strong carries every set. |

Tough conditions again today for our girls soccer team who fielded 9 against Broughton who decided to proceed with a full team on the field. The match started in our favour, with an early lead gifted through an unfortunate own goal by Broughton. However, the momentum shifted, and Broughton put four goals past us. Our girls responded with an attacking effort that allowed them to find the net once more, bringing the final score to 4-2. A few tough calls during the match affected team morale, and heads began to drop when things didn’t go our way. It’s important that we learn from this and remember that resilience and good sportsmanship are just as crucial as skill. A standout performance came from Suprina, who scored a brilliant goal and led by example throughout the match. Her effort, attitude, and class never wavered. |

Perfect conditions for Ultimate Frisbee today with 50 km/h winds making the game incredibly difficult. We struggled to move the frisbee up and down the field in the first half but still managed to go into half time with a lead. We changed our focus in the second half; with short simple passes and excessive pressure on their first few throws. JT were brilliant today and have really set the benchmark for the rest of the competition. Well done to Sienna and Isiah who were outstanding today. |

A great game from our JT girls. With only 4 teams in our division this was the second time we played Magdalene, and we closed the margin significantly. It was absolutely freezing when we got to the courts, and the wind continued to pick up and there was a fierce chill in the air. But nonetheless, the girls fought hard all game. Playing short with a fill in player today, we made a great effort despite the lopsided scoreline. Thanks to Levi Wallbridge for filling in. Blake McKenzie was called in the for 2nd inning and we managed to strike out the opposition with some great catching. |

Pathway Achievements
Diocese Cross Country
After initially getting postponed due to wet weather, the Diocese Cross Country Carnival was then adjusted again to a selection trial as the Nowra venue was washed out. This meant that our team list was adjusted to only our top two runners for each division invited to attend. The adjusted carnival was a great day weather-wise and was matched with some outstanding athletic performances at the Illawarra Criterium Track in Unanderra.
The main goal was to select the Wollongong team for the CCC cross country championship on Wednesday 11 June. The Criterium track is essentially a 1km loop where athletes compete in their age groups from 3km up to 6km (3-6 laps). It certainly provides challenges in making accurate counts of student laps, particularly when some age groups or genders are combined.
Our JT runners did well in a highly competitive and fast field. See our results below of our runners who finished their course. Those that finished top 6 qualify into the Wollongong Diocese team to compete at the NSWCCC on the 11th June.

NSWCCC Rugby League
After a one day delay for travel, the NSWCCC U18s Girls Rugby League trials were successfully held after some torrential weather caused the event to be moved from Cessnock to Camden. The U18s Southern Country Girls Rugby League Team were outstanding performers throughout the trials with John Therry's Annelise Hall being a stand-out player early in the trials. With wins over Northern Country (12-0), Metro (8-0), Sydney (20-0). Annelise was crucial to the team's success and was named captain of the Southern Country Team for Game 2 against Metro. Annelise was also named in the U18s NSWCCC team that will be competing at Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League in Port Macquarie for selection into the Australian School Girls Team.
Mr Tran
Keiren Mostyn was our sole representative at the NSWCCC U15 Rugby League Trials as part of the Southern Country team in St. Marys over the weekend, and unfortunately didn’t get an opportunity to showcase his talents. Keiren received a head knock and had to withdraw from the rest of the trial. We hope that he recovers quickly and can get selected again next year.
NSW All Schools Swimming
The Wragg-Leighton sisters had a fantastic campaign at the NSW All Schools Swimming Championships in Sydney in Week 4. Both girls swam their hearts out.
