Chess Team Dominates on Memorable Tuesday
Tuesday, May 27th, proved to be an exceptional day for the John Therry Chess Team, filled with impressive victories and memorable moments on the board.
The standout performance of the day belonged to Jackson Schulstad, who achieved a perfect score, winning all seven of his games! One particular match went down to the wire, with Jackson securing a thrilling checkmate with just one second remaining on the clock. His elation was palpable, while his opponent was left in stunned disbelief.
The team also faced off against fellow Marist school, St. Greg's, in a highly anticipated matchup. Our players demonstrated their strength and teamwork, securing a decisive victory with a score of 3.5 - 0.5.
The encounter against the tournament favorites, Sefton High, proved to be the most challenging of the day. Our team rose to the occasion, providing stiff competition in every game. In a nail-biting contest, John Therry emerged victorious with a score of 2.5 to Sefton's 1.5. A particularly captivating moment involved Khir, who maintained remarkable composure despite a rook blunder, while his opponent theatrically "air-signed" their calculated moves – a testament to the intense mental battle unfolding.
Behind the scenes, Dennis played an invaluable role as the team manager. His dedication to tracking scores, providing insightful counsel to the players, and representing the College with distinction made a significant contribution to the team's success.
Overall, it was a fantastic day of chess for the team, culminating in an impressive cumulative score of 24 out of a possible 28 points. Congratulations to all the players and Dennis for their outstanding efforts! We look forward to their continued success.
