PRINCIPALS REPORT

The Ascension of Jesus: A Message of Hope and Purpose

This week we mark the feast of the Ascension—an event that celebrates Jesus returning to heaven, 40 days after Easter. It’s a powerful moment in the Christian story, not just because Jesus departs, but because of what He leaves behind.

The Ascension reminds us that we are not alone. Before He ascended, Jesus promised His followers that they would receive the Holy Spirit and be strengthened to continue His work—spreading love, compassion, peace, and justice in the world. For Christians, this moment is not an ending, but a new beginning.

Later in the newsletter is an article on students from John Therry who recently completed the sacramental program and received all their sacraments at a special Mass. I particularly thank Mr Ryan Suares who led this whole program and provided this opportunity for our students, and Father Sarkis who supported this and enabled this to happen. We plan to provide this program every few years and invite students and families to consider whether this is something they would like to do.

Attendance update

Attendance rate: 91%

As at Term 2 Week 4

This week at assembly, I spoke about the importance of regular attendance and how it prepares students for life beyond school. In Australia, the average full-time worker receives 10 sick days across 261 working days per year—equating to a 96% attendance rate. Currently, 285 of our students have an attendance rate of 96% or higher.

My message to students is simple: developing strong attendance habits now sets the foundation for future success. I encourage all students to check their current attendance rate on Compass and set personal goals to improve over the coming term.

Recent Highlights

It’s been another busy and productive fortnight filled with meaningful events.

Our Year 11 and 12 Student Conferences provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on learning progress and plan ahead to help every student achieve their potential at John Therry. Thank you to all families who were able to attend.

We also welcomed Year 7 students and their families to a special event celebrating “77 Days of Year 7.” It was a wonderful evening where students introduced their parents to friends and mentors, and we shared a video time capsule that will become a treasured memory by the time of their Year 12 formal.

This edition of the newsletter features more highlights from across our school community. I’m continually inspired by the incredible talents, dedication, and achievements of our students and teachers. I hope you enjoy reading about all that has been happening at John Therry.
