Last week I had the absolute pleasure to be able to attend the Year 12 Retreats. With half of the group going to the Hermitage in Mittagong and the other to Windbourne in Mulgoa. As Principal it is important that I try to attend and say hello, but more important not to interrupt the retreat process.
From the first introductory session to the emotional climax on the third day the program seeks to challenge and open the students to their best selves. Almost all students have a wonderful time and for many a profound growth occurs. The students returned on Friday afternoon and had an air of success and of joy, the happiness was visible for all to see and enjoy.
I sincerely thank Mr Robinson and Ms Adams for the work in preparation for the experience to be richer for the students and to the seventeen Staff who gave time away from their families to support the students on their three-day journey. If your child attended please take some time to discuss the sessions, the feelings, the sharings and the growth that they experienced.
YEAR 7 CAMP
I was also lucky enough to be able to visit the Yr 7 Camp at Teen Ranch in Cobbitty. The students had a ball on the canoes, horses, ropes, climbing, high swing and archery just to name a few of the activities. A big thank you to Mrs Stanley and Mr Tran for the organization and again to the Staff who attended to provide supervision and safety for the students.
COLLEGE OPEN DAY – 2021
Please advertise this event to those friends who may have children in Year 5 or Year 6. Get them to come along and see what John Therry Catholic College is and stands for.
The liturgy was led by the College Captains Lauren and Wayne as well as our Spirituality Captain Celeste. The message of this year's liturgy focused on Pope Francis' challenge to us for this year - “In Lent, we need to be increasingly concerned with speaking words of comfort, strength, consolation and encouragement, and not words that demean, sadden, anger or show scorn,” Our message of encouragement to our community is shared below.
We take time to consciously and deliberately stop, to reflect on our relationship with God and our understanding of our life right now. Lent is not a period of time when I have to give things up but rather more significantly a dynamic, active time, where I have permission to act, to be more generous with the blessings that I have, to seek out others that need me to act with them or on their behalf. This Lent be challenged to do something, to give something, to change something to be something more. Place a value on yourself this Lent and stand for those who struggle to stand for themselves, pray and fast for a change, a change in ourselves to focus on the abundance we have and not what we don’t.
BRIDGING THE GENDER GAP IN SCIENCE
NEWS | BRIDGING THE GENDER GAP IN SCIENCE
Posted 11 February 2021 by Catholic Education in News
Today, Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) joins with nations around the world to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, acknowledging the past and present contribution of women working to close the gender gap in the field of science.
Throughout the centuries, countless courageous and open-minded women—many of whom were denied access to universities or recognition for their contributions—have pushed the boundaries in science and helped shape our world. The likes of Mary Somerville, Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin have been role models to young women and pioneers in a field of study which over time has been a predominantly male domain.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and the removal of boundaries and growing opportunities for young women and girls to engage in science has sparked real change.
In 2020, more than half of the students enrolled in HSC science-based subjects in CEDoW secondary schools were female, with biology boasting a 70% female student enrolment rate.
Thanks to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and robotics programs offered in schools, girls in both primary and secondary settings are now experiencing more of what science has to offer – and making significant contributions themselves.
From environmental design challenges led by the Young Change Agents in partnership with The Academy of Enterprising Girls, to coding with VEX Robotics, mBot competitions and dedicated STEM days, CEDoW students are learning to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.
A love of science and discovery of the unknown has inspired many young women from Catholic high schools and colleges in the Diocese of Wollongong to study and pursue careers in the field of science.
At John Therry Catholic College, research and writing scientific reports have developed Tahlia's interest in science.
“I enjoy learning about new phenomena. I also enjoy formulating hypotheses, asking questions, and then testing through experimentation to find answers,” she said.
“I am planning on pursuing a career as a forensic pathologist because I feel new things to research and new questions will arise, allowing me to enjoy my job.”
A reminder that Homework Club operates on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3pm - 4:30pm. Teachers are available to assist students and those who attend find this useful and productive time. Our Year 12 students are making good use of this at the moment and we encourage all students to consider whether homework club may assist their learning.

10-12 Boys Basketball |
Mr Holmes |
45 - 30 JT Win |
The new coach guided the boys to victory. A great result, with some silky basketball skills shown from the squad. Wesley and Devontay linking up well terrorising the defence and Cameron’s 3 pointers helping the team claim the result. Well done JT. MVP: Devontay Zaglas |
10-12 Girls Basketball |
Miss Morley |
41 - 10 JT Win |
The John Therry girls had a fantastic start to the MISA season with a 41-10 win over Magdelene. Well done to all girls for their efforts and response to feedback, but a particular mention to our MVP, Sarah White, for her experience and initiative in guiding the ball down the court. The girls are looking forward to the rounds ahead- there was definitely a good vibe on the bus return home! MVP: Sarah White |
7-9 Boys Volleyball |
Mr Williamson |
2 - 0 JT Win |
Very good first up performance. Totally dominated the game. Good teamwork and decision making. Fine serving from Trae Smith. MVP: Cody Meisenhofen |
7-9 Girls Volleyball |
Mrs Pellegrino |
2-1 JT Win |
A victory win for the JT girls volleyball. First game of the season comes with its challenges as this was the first time the girls have played together as a team. All players demonstrated exceptional team work, communication and team spirit. After losing the first set by 3 points, the girls were even more determined to win, with a 13point lead in the second set. The JT girls put the pressure on in the third and final set, winning the game. MVP: Jorja Borg |
10-12 Girls Oztag |
Mr Winter |
3 - 0 JT Win |
The girls took some time to find their feet within the first half coming into round 1 but led the way with the first try from Kiara Bolz. A short but wild burst of rain created difficulties for Magdalene but did not affect the girls from JTCC. This made way for 2 more tries in the second half coming from Shanae Leech-Morrison with a spin and dive and another effortless try from Kiara Bolz. The final score being 3-0, JTCC for the win. MVP: Kiara Bolz |
10-12 Boys Oztag |
Mr McGrath |
7 - 0 JT Win |
An extraordinary start to the year for the open boys with a 7 nil win against Magdalene. The weather conditions weren’t ideal, with the rain putting a stop to the game at the beginning of the second half. The boys backed up well after the DIO carnival and didn’t miss a beat. Positive signs for the season ahead! MVP: Zac Morheb |
7-9 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Mr Geribo |
53 - 103 MAG Win |
It was a tough introduction to indoor cricket for most of the girls as we faced a solid Magdalene team. After losing the toss and getting sent into bat, we managed to scrape our way to a total of 53 after consistently losing wickets throughout our innings. Our John Therry girls both bowled and fielded well, taking a couple of good catches, but Magdalene were too strong on the day. Well done on your first game and we look forward to next week. MVP: Bridget Shearer |
7-9 Boys Softball |
Mr Chapman |
3- 9 MAG Win |
The 7-9 boys softball team had their first match of the year against Magdalene. In a weather affected game that made pitching difficult, JT was unable to restrict the free flowing scoring of the Magdalene batters, which ultimately cost the game. We showed great teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the match. MVP: Austin Matahau |
7-9 Girls Hockey |
Mrs. Davidson |
0 -6 MAG Win |
The girls were up against a very experienced team for Round 1. They put up a strong effort and gave it 100%. They worked as a team and supported each other throughout the entire duration of the match. MVP: Georgia Hohberg |

YEAR 7 CAMP COLLEGE CAPTAINS VISIT
On Wednesday night the College Captains dropped in with the Year 7 campers to share a meal and conversation. The Year 7 boys hosted a captain at each table and asked plenty of questions about life in the college and what it is like being a leader. After dinner, the night moved into an Ash Wednesday liturgy and house prayer led by the College leaders. The leaders then took their respective house groups outside to teach them a colour chant which culminated in a “chant off” back in the general hall. Chisholm achieved a very decisive win and with that the highly sought after house points. A massive congratulations to Tasmyn and Thomas for their leadership and a further thank you to the College Student leadership team for giving up their free time for such a rewarding experience for both all students involved.
