Champagnat Day Liturgy and Awards
On Thursday 6th June, we celebrate the Feast Day of Marcellin Champagnat, founder of the Marist Brothers. John Therry was created by Brother Clarence, a Marist Brother, and the school retains links to Marist Schools Australia as one way we live our faith life here at John Therry.
We held our annual Champagnat Day liturgy and awards ceremony on Thursday morning and it was a lovely celebration as always. These awards are some of my favourite that we give out, as they are nominated by students and teachers for those individuals who live out our Marist values of humility, simplicity and presence. In our next newsletter we will share some highlights from this assembly including our award winners.
I shared a few exceprts of a modernised fouviere pledge with staff this week. Marcellin and 12 other priests made this pledge in starting their 'Society of Mary' back in France in 1816, and I find this resonates strongly with the work we are doing here at John Therry.
"We want to be people who bring love to life. We seek to heal, to educate, and to accompany people to discover fullness of life."
"Our Marian way is to go joyfully and generously, looking to form life-giving relationships with people, that stir the liberating Spirit within them, so they too can become instruments of God's faithfullness, justice and mercy."
Lovely words for us to aspire to and live up to here at John Therry Catholic College in 2024.
P & F Meeting Week 8 6:30pm
We welcome all parents and friends of John Therry to our next P & F meeting. We will share a sample of our new college jumper that is made of poly cotton and has been very positively tested by a wide range of student volunteers. We will also discuss current and upcoming events, and will seek feedback on issues affecting students and parents at this time. We hope you can make it!
I will be taking some long service leave from week 8 to week 10 of Term 2. I thank Mrs Phillips who will be acting Principal, and Mr Ferguson who will be acting Assistant Principal in my absence, and I know that the school is in very capable hands to finish Semester 1.
STUDENT-LED PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE
Student-led Parent-Teacher Conferences: Empowering Students in Their Learning Journey
In our ongoing efforts to keep students engaged in their learning and provide them with strategies to overcome challenges, we recently introduced Student-led Parent-Teacher conferences for our senior students in Years 11 & 12.
Following the distribution of their Half Yearly reports, students engaged in a reflective process during their Pastoral lessons. They were provided with reflection booklets for each of their HSC courses, which they completed with the support of their learning mentors. These booklets formed the basis of the Student-led conferences, where students guided the discussions with their parents and teachers.
The aim of these conferences was to encourage students to take ownership of their learning, address any challenges, and collaboratively find the best way forward to achieve success in their HSC.
We were thrilled to see so many students and their parents/caregivers participate, demonstrating a strong commitment to their education despite the chilly weather. Here are some comments from those who took part:
A Parent’s Perspective:
“The Student Led Conference was a great experience! It was terrific to hear how much my student had reflected upon the learning opportunities of the past two years, identifying her strengths, goals, and had identified opportunities for growth. The insight of her teachers and their demonstrated understanding of her learning style and goals, and the overall passion of her teachers is wonderful. Every parent-teacher night I again reflect for myself on what an excellent decision she and I made in choosing JTCC to guide her through 7-12. The 2024 format for feedback was the best ever.”
A Student’s Perspective:
“I really enjoyed the Student Led Conference as I was able to better reflect on my efforts, performance, and struggles in subjects prior to the conversations with my teachers. During the conference, I found my discussion with teachers were more informed and productive as my teachers and I went into the conference having already reflected on the year. I believe this was extremely useful to my peers and me, and should also be implemented with other year groups throughout the year.”
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated teachers for their hard work and support in making these conferences a success.
To wrap up the evening, we held a ‘lucky door’ raffle, and we are delighted to announce the winner: Alyssa Giampaolo (Year 12)! Alyssa won a $50.00 gift card from QBD Books. Congratulations, Alyssa!
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of our Student-led Parent-Teacher conferences. Your engagement and support are invaluable as we strive to create a thriving learning environment for our students.
ARTEXPRESS Exhibition at Ngununggula Southern Highlands Regional Gallery
The ARTEXPRESS exhibition officially opened at the Ngununggula Southern Highlands Regional Gallery in Bowral on Saturday, May 25th, at 2:00 PM. Running from May 18th to June 30th, this prestigious event showcases exemplary artworks created by New South Wales visual arts students for the Higher School Certificate examination.
Among the selected artists is our very own HSC Visual Arts student, Angelica Estrada. Her work, 'The Grain of the Present,' was chosen for this esteemed exhibition, highlighting some of the best talent in the state.
ARTEXPRESS is an annual series of exhibitions celebrating the exceptional talents of young artists. The opening event was attended by distinguished guests, including principals, visual arts teachers, student artists, and officials from the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA).
Angelica's artist statement for her work reads:
"In the hustle and bustle of Philippine streets, a captivating narrative unfolds - an unfiltered depiction of raw human emotions and authentic moments. My body of work examines the interplay of light and shadows, delving into the intricacies of daily life. My intention is to investigate, through my lens, the essence of the present, emphasizing the profound beauty of the ordinary. I peel back the layers of cultural diversity, social struggles, and the resilient spirit that defines the Filipino people. The grain of each photo conveys a tapestry of memories in a nation firmly rooted in tradition yet embracing an ever-changing world."
We are immensely proud of Angelica's achievement, not only for her selection in ARTEXPRESS but also for achieving a Band 6 result in Visual Arts, alongside eight of her peers from last year’s HSC Visual Arts class.
Biology and Music Sessions Boost Student Preparedness
On 4th June 2024, our HSC students attended the latest masterclasses, focusing on Biology and Music. These sessions, held in the lead-up to the Trial HSC exams, provided invaluable opportunities for students to refine their skills and deepen their understanding in these subjects.
Biology Masterclass: Mastering Graphicacy and Exam Questions
The Biology masterclass concentrated on graphicacy, an essential skill for interpreting and presenting data, and exam question strategies. Students engaged in hands-on activities that enhanced their ability to tackle complex graphical data and apply this knowledge to exam-style questions.
Music Masterclass: Enhancing Concepts and Aural Skills
In the Music masterclass, the focus was on developing concepts and aural skills. Students worked on understanding musical structures and enhancing their listening abilities, essential components of the HSC Music curriculum.
Preparing for Success
Running these masterclasses ahead of the Trial HSC exams is proving to be a valuable strategy. Students are brushing up on critical skills, gaining fresh insights, and building the confidence needed to excel. The masterclasses not only reinforce their knowledge but also provide a platform for addressing individual challenges and improving exam techniques.
Looking Ahead
We have more masterclasses scheduled as we continue through Term 2, covering a variety of subjects. These sessions will keep providing crucial support, ensuring our HSC students are thoroughly prepared for their upcoming exams. Our commitment to fostering an environment of excellence is reflected in the success of these masterclasses, and we are excited to see their continued positive impact.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to support our students in their journey towards academic success.
HEARING THE CRY OF THE EARTH AND THE CRY OF THE POOR (Mission Forum)
"Today, we have to realise that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” - Pope Francis, Laudato Si' On Care for Our Common Home
Three Year 11 students, Sophia Britton, Bailey Gilbert, and Alexis Paulo, attended the Senior Student Marist Mission Forum last weekend. This event brought together a wonderful group of students from six different Marist schools in Sydney.
The Senior Student Marist Mission Forum is a gathering for Year 11 and 12 students from Marist schools across NSW-ACT. Organized by the Marist Youth Ministry team, the weekend aimed to deepen students' understanding of Marist spirituality and mission. It provided an opportunity for students to pause, reflect, and listen to the call of the Spirit within their hearts. The forum sought to renew students' awareness of our interconnectedness, our responsibility for creation, and our commitment to human dignity.
The weekend featured a variety of activities. On Friday night, students participated in a simulation game called "Basti Life," which offered a powerful glimpse into life in a slum. Saturday morning involved workshops where students could choose to attend three out of four sessions. The Lavalla 200 community shared insights on volunteering within and beyond the Marist world. Other workshops covered biodiversity, refugees, and creation. The actual forum took place on Sunday morning, focusing on discussions around fast fashion, climate change, and refugees.
Senior Student Forum - Student Feedback
In ten words or less, describe your experience at the Senior Student Mission Forum:
- "It was a fun time while still focusing on serious issues."

- "Fun experience, met new people, deepened my faith."
- "This experience was great as it allowed me to make connections with several new people and learn more about the Marist life and helping others in need."
- "It was a fun time to make new friends, get away from the comfort of my home, and connect with nature and my faith."
- "This experience was very fun and I enjoyed the activities and games provided. I also really liked the morning and afternoon prayers as they were very calming."
- "It was great and knowledgeable. I had a fun time talking and meeting new people. It was enlightening to understand the struggles of refugees and the impacts of not treating the world right."
On a bright and bustling Wednesday, our students embarked on an artistic adventure at the annual Inter-School Drama Workshop, held this year at Broughton Anglican College. The day was filled with creativity, learning, and the joy of making new friends from different schools within the Macarthur Independent Schools Association (MISA).
The workshop centered around a unique and engaging activity: building paper puppets and bringing them to life through movement and performance. This exercise was not just about crafting and acting but about teamwork, imagination, and communication. From the moment we arrived, the excitement was palpable. Our students, eager to represent the college, dove headfirst into the activities with enthusiasm and dedication.
The students began their journey by designing and constructing their paper puppets. It was incredible to watch their creativity unfold as they carefully cut, folded, and sculpted their puppets, transforming simple materials into expressive characters. Each puppet was a work of art, reflecting the unique personality of each group.
The next step was perhaps the most challenging and rewarding: giving the puppets life through movement. Students learned the fundamentals of puppetry, exploring how to convey emotions and actions through subtle movements and breath. The room buzzed with concentration as they practiced, each movement becoming more precise and deliberate. It was a joy to see our students' faces light up as they discovered the magic of bringing their puppets to life.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the day was the camaraderie that developed among the students. Our participants had the chance to collaborate with peers from various schools, sharing ideas and techniques. The atmosphere was one of mutual respect and encouragement, as students cheered each other on and offered constructive feedback. New friendships blossomed as they worked together, united by their shared love of drama and performance.
The culmination of the workshop was the performance, where each group showcased their puppets in short skits. Our students performed with confidence and flair, impressing not only the audience but also the workshop leaders. Their ability to convey complex emotions and stories through their puppets was truly remarkable. They represented John Therry with such talent and enthusiasm.
As Mr. Hayden stated, "Beyond the skills and friendships gained, the workshop had a lasting impact on our students. They returned to school with renewed passion and excitement for drama, eager to apply what they had learned to our upcoming productions and assessments. The experience also reinforced important values such as teamwork, perseverance, and creative expression. Our students not only showcased their talents but also embodied the spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm that is at the heart of drama. They left a lasting impression on everyone they met and returned with memories and skills that will enrich their lives both on and off the stage."
The MISA Drama Workshop was a resounding success, and we look forward to seeing our students continue to grow and shine in the world of drama. This experience has undoubtedly sparked a flame of inspiration that will burn brightly in the months and years to come. Thank you to Mr. Hayden and Mrs. Hume for all their work with our students on the day.
YEAR 8 MISA PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
Last week, two Year 8 students from John Therry were chosen to represent the school in the first-ever MISA Public Speaking Competition. This inaugural event brought together over twenty Year 8 students from various MISA schools, challenging them to address contemporary issues with a focus on both emergent and traditional technologies and their roles in human society.
Finlay Thomas achieved an impressive second place with her speech on the evolution of communication. Her insightful presentation resonated deeply with both the adjudicators and the audience, prompting thoughtful discussion on how these technological advancements influence our humanity.
Jye Dickens, while not placing, delivered a thought-provoking speech on the benefits and drawbacks of emergent AI. His examination of the complexities of artificial intelligence encouraged the audience to reflect on the broader philosophical implications of this rapidly advancing technology.
Both students showcased exceptional oratory skills, effectively engaging their audience through ethos, pathos, and logos. Congratulations to Jye and Finlay for their remarkable performances and contributions to the competition.

The boys played well in a physical game against a strong broughton team. The good period of the game was when captain Ben Mostyn had a kick for goal directly in front and missed by a mile. ( he should not take kicks in future) They all supported each other in attack and defending their line. The JTCC boys eventually ran out winners and demonstrated great teamwork and flashes of individual brilliance. |
Tre-James Roberts Jordan Truckle |
U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 1 Mr Tran |
Lost 7 - 4 vs Mag A |
The girls were involved in a physical game against a strong Magdalene team. The good periods of the game were when they moved forward and tackled in numbers, as well as supporting each other in attack. Nevaeh was excellent when carrying the ball forward as well as making strong defensive decisions. |
Nevaeh Metcalfe |
U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 2 Mr Tran |
Lost 5 - 3 vs Mag B |
It was a very slow start to the game with multiple girls making their rugby league debut against a strong St Benedicts team. Maisie Dadd was a defensive leader in the middle dominating multiple tackles and Billie Hannan was impressive in both attack and defence. The girls will benefit from using this experience for future games. |
Billie Hannan |
11/12 Boys Soccer Mr Cook |
Won 2 - 1 vs BAC |
An energised group of young men took on the might of Broughton. JTCC possessed more skilful players and played accordingly. Great build up play and leadership by Preston Teran in the midfield allowed JTCC to keep control of the middle of the park. Cohan Timmer and Alessandro Bayon created multiple opportunities and Liam Wicks was quick to pounce on a through ball and put JTCC up early in the half. More great combination play allowed multiple shots on goal with Garang hitting the bar twice, with Jake, Liam, Thierry all missing sitters to extend our lead. We soon capitalised and led 2 - 0, before letting Broughton back in the game with a dubious goal. Strong defensive efforts by Riley Tonna, Elijah Soares, and Angus O’Dwyer kept Broughton at bay, but only because of three great 1v1 saves by Clayton Baguley in goals allowed JTCC to steal the win. Great game gents. |
Clayton Baguley |
10 - 12 Girls Soccer Ms Moon |
Lost 5 - 0 vs MAS |
Another unfortunate loss for our JT senior girls soccer team today against Macarthur Anglican. The girls fought hard in the first half keeping the score card to only 1-0 but we seemed to have lost our momentum in the second half where we conceded another 4 goals. Our MVP was Isabella Drake who played a pivotal role in our defence |
Isabella Drake |
10 - 12 Girls Indoor Cricket Mr Chapman |
Lost 104 - 93 vs BAC |
John Therry took on BAC and we hit our highest score of the season. Lily and Bridget took great catches in the field and we showed great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the game. There were a couple of tough calls against us, however, the girls fought really hard and took the game all the way to the final few balls. They can be proud of their efforts today. |
Maddison Burke |
7 - 9 Boys Hockey Ms Troy |
Won 4 - 0 vs OPAC |
What a great day for a hockey game! The boys came out of the gate fast, scoring in the first 2mins. OPAC put up a good fight, but our forwards were too good and with our defense doing well to keep the majority of play out of our end. Our attack took advantage, pushing OPAC into their own third for most of the game. Josh P 2 goals, Josh C and Travis 1 goal each. Shout out to our SuperCoach, Kiara and referee, Keigan. An all-round team effort today! MVP: With an amazing save in goals - Kade Nightingale |
Kade Nightingale |
7 - 9 Mixed Frisbee Mr Bodeker |
Won 30 - 4 vs MAS |
Another comprehensive victory from our 7-9 Mixed Frisbee. JT started the game strong and after 5 minutes had already scored 5 touchdowns. With a focus on short, sharp passing the boys were able to move the frisbee up field and find the ladies who were wide open in the end zone. Nic and Nate were very solid in the midfield and combined well all game. With a tough match up next week, JT are primed for a big contest. |
Abi-Khattar |
10 - 12 Boys Softball Mr Hatton |
Won 6 - 5 vs MCCC |
A great win playing 1 man short. Some tremendous batting against a pitcher throwing 100 Km/h +. Bat on ball got us base hits and enough home while some good fielding held them to 5.. |
Dante Foweraker |
11/12 Girls Netball Ms Kelleher |
Lost 20 - 13 vs SPC |
A challenging game between JT and St Pats. Sadly we lost by 7 points but the girls did not give up and gave their all throughout all four quarters. By Tara R, student and team member. |

7 - 9 Boys Basketball Mr Jefferys |
Won 58-33 vs OPAC |
The boys basketball team secured a convincing victory, defeating OPAC with a final score of 58-33. The game showcased impressive offensive prowess but highlighted some defensive lapses. Unfortunately, the boys relaxed on defence in the second half which allowed OPAC to score 20 points in the second half after keeping them to 13 at the half. |
Moni Tumanuvao |
7 - 9 Girls Basketball Mr Winter |
Lost 44-16 vs SPC |
Regardless of the score this week, The girls have never looked better in terms of cohesion and teamwork. Some fancy assists to our lead scorers Sophie Regan and Sienna Larner were impressive. The girls have one more chance to show off their progress next week in the quarter finals. |
Sienna Larner |
10 - 12 Boys Rugby League Mr McGrath |
Won 30 -10 vs SBCC |
A dominant performance from JT this week, with the scoreline not showing a true reflection of the game. A lot of missed conversions kept the score down but the boys showed how competitive they can be against the other schools in the competition. A few missed opportunities on the edge also kept the score down for Bennies. Jordan Truckle was a complete stand out, showing brilliance in attack and defence in two positions. A big improvement from round 1 - well done boys |
Jordan truckle |
U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 1 Mr Strojny |
Lost 32 - 20 vs SPC |
The girls came in strong today, with a focus on building confidence and strong contact. Despite being short handed, Sienna (MVP) was fierce and determined to take on their best, inspiring the girls to attack with confidence. Sienna stole the show, making multiple line breaks and demonstrating tireless determination. After a back and forth exchange, Pats eventually got ahead with an 8-5 win. A huge effort from the girls, taking on this challenge head on. |
Sienna Coghlan |
U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 2 Mr Strojny |
Won 20 - 0 vs THAC |
The girls had an easy trial game today as THAC had to forfeit due to low numbers. |
|
11/12 Boys Soccer Mr Williamson |
Won 4-0 vs MCCC |
A slow start but a strong second half performance with all goals coming after the break. Some excellent finishing from Darcy Wilson, Cohan Timmer, Diego Martin and Thierry Ngorora. Solid defence again from Angus O’Dwyer and Clayton Baguley in goal. Looking forward to a playoff with Magdalene next week. |
Darcy Wilson |
10 - 12 Girls Soccer Ms Moon |
Lost 3-0 vs MCCC |
The senior girls put on a fantastic performance today against a very tough Mount Carmel side. Following a significant defeat earlier this term at Diocesan, expectations were tempered going into this week's game. Despite this our girls managed to limit the score to just 3, thanks to our strong and resilient defence. Moreover, there were some promising offensive opportunities this week, signalling the ongoing improvement with each round. Special mention goes to our captain and week 6 MVP, Jorja, who stepped into the goalkeeper position for Darcie and delivered a series of impressive saves, showcasing her athleticism despite her limited experience in the role. |
Jorja Hohberg |
10 - 12 Girls Indoor Cricket Mr Geribo |
Won 70 - 59 vs MAG |
A fantastic performance saw our girls have their first win of the term against OPAC. The girls won the toss and bowled, with captain Laura leading from the front taking two great catches and two stumpings. Oran Park were restricted to 59 due to some accurate bowling and good fielding. Our batting performance matched our efforts with the ball with Maddi and Elyse (20) and Bridget and Ashlee (22) getting us off to a great start, setting up our innings and our first win of the season. Well done girls! |
Laura Augustine |
7 - 9 Boys Hockey Mr Holmes |
won 1-0 vs MAS |
With a man down it was a tight game. Josh Carlin dominated in the middle and help to keep the score a well fought nil-nil at the end of the half. Joshua Pike decided it would be best for him to enter the game despite a slight strain and sat in defence helping to keep the clean sheet. The excitement got the better of him as he moved to a more offensive role to help set up the winning goal scored by Travis Campbell ensuring the game finished 1-0 score in a lovely build. Kade did phenomenally in goals to ensure a clean sheet. Macarthur Anglican played an excellent game of hockey and should be commended for their efforts. We look forward to meeting them again in the final. |
Joshua Pike |
7 - 9 Mixed Frisbee Mr Bodeker |
Won 10-5 vs MCCC |
A tough and highly competitive game which really tested our Frisbee Skills. John Therry started really strong and went into halftime with a 8-0 lead thanks to some outstanding team work and energy from Nick and Nate. Early touchdowns to Ebony, Ava, Alice and Matilda set the tone for our best half Of the season. Mt Carmel came out in the second half with 2 early touchdowns, however JT were able to compose themselves with a late touchdown to Ava to calm the nerves and hold on to our lead. Special mention to our MVP for the week William Shearer, Will was everywhere on the field and made a full length dive to stop MCCC from scoring a touchdown late in the second half. Well done team. |
William Shearer |
10 - 12 Boys Softball Mr Hatton |
Lost 8 - 5 vs SBCC |
Great start but some easy outs for us let St Benedict’s into the game. They capitalised well and got a good lead after 1 innings. With some great base running from Adam Steele JT levelled at 5 all but a good hit saw the opposition get 3 home and take the win. |
Adam Steele |
11/12 Girls Netball Ms Kelleher |
Won 29 - 11 vs MAG |
Some students returning from injury proved for an excellent game today, and our first win! Some excellent play and great connections down the court. Chloe filled in again as centre and proved a star with many intercepts and great feeds. Great win girls! |
