STUDENT-LED PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE
Student-led Parent-Teacher Conferences: Empowering Students in Their Learning Journey
In our ongoing efforts to keep students engaged in their learning and provide them with strategies to overcome challenges, we recently introduced Student-led Parent-Teacher conferences for our senior students in Years 11 & 12.
Following the distribution of their Half Yearly reports, students engaged in a reflective process during their Pastoral lessons. They were provided with reflection booklets for each of their HSC courses, which they completed with the support of their learning mentors. These booklets formed the basis of the Student-led conferences, where students guided the discussions with their parents and teachers.
The aim of these conferences was to encourage students to take ownership of their learning, address any challenges, and collaboratively find the best way forward to achieve success in their HSC.
We were thrilled to see so many students and their parents/caregivers participate, demonstrating a strong commitment to their education despite the chilly weather. Here are some comments from those who took part:
A Parent’s Perspective:
“The Student Led Conference was a great experience! It was terrific to hear how much my student had reflected upon the learning opportunities of the past two years, identifying her strengths, goals, and had identified opportunities for growth. The insight of her teachers and their demonstrated understanding of her learning style and goals, and the overall passion of her teachers is wonderful. Every parent-teacher night I again reflect for myself on what an excellent decision she and I made in choosing JTCC to guide her through 7-12. The 2024 format for feedback was the best ever.”
A Student’s Perspective:
“I really enjoyed the Student Led Conference as I was able to better reflect on my efforts, performance, and struggles in subjects prior to the conversations with my teachers. During the conference, I found my discussion with teachers were more informed and productive as my teachers and I went into the conference having already reflected on the year. I believe this was extremely useful to my peers and me, and should also be implemented with other year groups throughout the year.”
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated teachers for their hard work and support in making these conferences a success.
To wrap up the evening, we held a ‘lucky door’ raffle, and we are delighted to announce the winner: Alyssa Giampaolo (Year 12)! Alyssa won a $50.00 gift card from QBD Books. Congratulations, Alyssa!
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of our Student-led Parent-Teacher conferences. Your engagement and support are invaluable as we strive to create a thriving learning environment for our students.
