College Captains 2024
It is with great pleasure that we announce our College Captains for 2024. Our 15 Captains come from a much larger group of outstanding students who nominated to fill these important positions. We thank all students with the courage to put their hand up and take on the responsiblities of leadership. We also emphasise that each student in Year 12 is a leader of our College, modelling the behaviour and culture that we set here at John Therry.
Congratulations to our 2024 Captains.

It has been a busy week at John Therry with many important events taking place. Year 10 were involved in showcasing their History projects on Monday evening, while confirming their subjects for Year 11 2024. The projects were quite amazing and it was wonderful to see the students so engaged in their work and the quality of the artefacts.
The Year 12 HSC showcase on Thursday night was a real highlight and the talent of our students never ceases to amaze me. The quality of art work, drama and musical performances were some of the best I have seen and should translate to some wonderful HSC results for our students. Major projects require significant dedication and commitment by both students and teachers and I thank all teachers who have walked alongside students through this process. I extend this thanks to parents who have no doubt worn many of the stresses of completing these projects.
P & F Meeting - 12th September 6:30pm
The John Therry P & F has made significant donations to the College recently including $25000 towards a new outdoor senior area and providing KLA's $5000 to purchase equipment and resources to engage with their learning. This has included state of the art equipment to set up a green room for recording video and photography, new sport uniforms and a wide range of specialist equipment.
At our meetings we discuss options for uniform, upcoming events, and seek feedback from parents on how we can best meet the needs of the students at John Therry.
If you would like to be involved in discussions on how we use these funds, feel free to join us on the 12th September at 6:30pm in the staff common room.
HAPPY FATHERS DAY
I wish all of our fathers and father figures a happy fathers day on Sunday. We also remember those no longer with us and give thanks for gifts and blessings of fatherhood.

Our pastoral programs aim to support student wellbeing by developing a wide range of qualities, skills and aspirations in our young people. On Thursday 31st August our Year 10,11 & 12 students heard from motivational speaker Michelle Lee, and our Year 7 and 8 students participated in a workshop "backflips against bullying.
Michelle Lee, ex student and first Australian Female to row across the Atlantic Ocean, shared her stories of hard work, preparation, and self belief to conquer some amazing challenges. Michelle talked about the many barriers that will come up anytime that you try something really significant, and the need to be able to confront these barriers, find ways around them and keep on going. Michelle had many powerful messages in her talk and it was wonderful to see an ex-student from John Therry taking on the world and following her dreams. We hope this inspires our students to dream big and make the most of their one wild and precious life!
Backflips against bullying is an anti-bullying program that addresses themes of bullying using parkour and acrobatics to engage students. This is an evidence based program run across the UK and Australia and supports the messages embedded in our PDHPE and Pastoral programs. It was certainly engaging and we will continue to ensure that we reinforce the messages in all aspects of College life.
In week 7, two year 10 students, Alexander Nohra and Charlotte Russell, competed in a MISA public speaking competition in which they were tasked to write a 6 minute speech on something they were passionate about. Alexander produced an insightful speech about his fears for the future, and Charlotte spoke about her love of music and how it can stand the test of time.
They then had to answer the question “What does success mean to you?” giving an impromptu response. Both students demonstrated their exemplary skills, and answered effortlessly.
Both students, although they didn’t win, spoke with confidence, elegance and professionalism. It takes courage to not only stand up and speak but also produce such amazing, vulnerable speeches. They are truly talented students.

Indoor Cricket 10-12 Boys Chapman |
Lost 98-63 vs MAS |
Luke Isakka |
JT bowled first in our match against MAS. While our bowling was very good, our fielding left a lot to be desired, missing a dozen crucial chances. Despite this, we restricted them to under a hundred runs and had a reasonable chance at victory. Our first batting pair of Luke and Mason got 37 runs from the first three over, however, MAS bowling was very tidy and they backed this up in the field. Score: 98-63 MAS |
AFL 10-12 Boys Geribo |
Won 127-6 Vs THAC |
Benjamin Mostyn |
Basically a training match against a weak THAC side which saw the ball shared around today. Our main focus this match was to minimise marks given up to the opposition, however with such a blowout game, we steered away from it. Today saw Benny’s first goal which was one of the highlights of the day, as well as Ethan and Diego kicking a few of their own. Goal scorers this week consisted of Coby (5), Ethan, Benny, Diego (3), Darcy (2), Riley (1) and Denniss (4). Final score JT 20.7 (127) - ( |

Soccer 9-10 Boys Cook |
Won 2-1 Vs MTCC |
Emilio Miranda and Cohen Timmer |
The last game of the season against our nemesis Mt Carmel. With only 1 available sub, and limited warm-up time, the boys were keen for their last season game. The boys started well combining well all over the park. With a quick loss of possession, Mt Carmel were on the attack, and a quick shot soon had us down on the scoresheet. JTCC had numerous opportunities on goal but failed to capitalise. A quick breakdown of the game is all that was needed as JT came out totally dominating the game. Great team football on display, and we soon were leading 2-1, with a very impressed opposition coach stating, "How the hack are you guys coming last". The best performance was left for the last game, as we now wait for other results to determine if we play next week in the semi's. MVP's - Emilio Miranda for his efforts in attack and Cohan Timmer for his efforts in defence. |
Soccer 7-8 Boys Williamson |
Lost 4-3 vs |
Bryson McIntyre |
A topsy turvy game today against an evenly matched opponent. Some defensive lapses in the first half saw us three goals down near halftime. An inspired response, with grit and determination, led to one goal from Bryson before halftime and two from Cooper after the break. We were back even with 10 minutes to go and all the momentum. Unfortunately a late tussle for the ball resulted in a loss of possession and a seventh goal in the game to them. The boys are to be commended for levelling the score and look headed for a disappointing fifth verse sixth play-off next week. |
Soccer 7-9 Girls Hynard |
MCCC Lost 6-1 |
Alice Stephenson |
The JT girls were on the back foot right from the start as Mt. Carmel scored twice in the first couple of minutes of the game. This surprised JT but they then spent the most of this game defending their own half. However, a great goal by Alice came late in the first half to be 3-1 at half time. Since the girls coach - Mr Joy was absent, Mr Cook gave them a pep talk at half time (via speaker phone) to rev them up however the strong defensive and skills of the Mt. Carmel girls were difficult to break. Many of our goalkeeper Darcie's saves were impressive. Prior to this game the girls were undefeated in the comp. They will have the privilege to play this team in the semi or final when they have their coach on the sidelines to hopefully assist them win. |
Netball 9-10 Girls Bulger |
Draw 19-19 |
Annelise Hall and Elyse Stonebridge |
An action packed game against Magdalene today. John Therry needed the win to secure third place heading into the semi finals. The girls showed great determination, the game was fast and tough. John Therry demonstrated great composure, skill and teamwork. I was impressed by the teams ability to control their pace of play, quick and efficient when opportunities presented, while other times composed and controlled, maximising on turnovers and the hard work of the defensive end. It is a pleasure to coach a team like this with such experience and high level of skill. A very exciting game to watch. Congratulations on the draw John Therry, a sound result. |
Netball 7-8 Girls Pedder |
30 -10 Loss |
Sophie Regan & Rylee Louden |
. The final game for Year 7 and 8 girls was against Magdalene. The team had a good first quarter thay saw them with equal scores. However, by the remaining quarters the score slowly got away from them. The girls were positive throughout the game besides the loss, and enjoyed playing their last game as a team. |

JT played BAC in the MISA cricket semi final. We won the toss and elected to bowl first. While our bowlers did their job with the ball, our poor fielding again let us down, missing multiple catches and run outs. With the bat we had some good partnerships, however, we couldn’t quite get the job done. Score: 91-71 BAC |
AFL 10-12 Boys Geribo |
Won 39 - 17 Vs Mt Carmel |
Diego Martin |
A must win semi final against MCCC saw our toughest game of the season. JT started slow, allowing easy marks and not winning possession, which saw us go down 14-0 early. The injection of Angus saw some spark as we clawed our way back to a 2 point deficit at halftime. Ethan, Diego and Preston played outstanding games, going hard into every contest without a worry for their bodies. JT picked it up in the second half, playing more confidently and freely. Goal scorers this week consisted of Ethan, Riley (1 each), and Denniss (4). Final score JT 6.3 (39) - MCCC 2.5 (17) |
AFL 10-12 Girls Neaves |
Lost 60 - 1 St Pat’s |
A disappointing end to the season for the 10-12 Girls AFL team. The girls never stopped trying and should be commended for their efforts this season. Thank you. |

Soccer 9-10 Boys Cook |
2 - 0 Win Macarthur Anglican School |
MVP: Cohan Timmer |
The boys continue to improve as their season progresses with another dominating 2 - 0 performance. The boys have “bought into their new formation and can easily outplay their opposition with the overload across all areas of the park. Good contributions today by Lucas Faila (Yr 7), Issac Russell, Cohan Timmer, Emerson Yevenes, Emilio Miranda and Robbie Blakely. Our possession of the ball allowed us to create numerous scoring opportunities which we failed to convert. I look forward to coaching the boys in the future and thank the boys for their efforts through a long season of Diocesan, Bill Turner and MISA competitions. MVP: Cohan Timmer |
Soccer 7-8 Boys Williamson |
Won 5-1 Vs Broughton |
Ben Keers |
A tight first half conflicted with a wide open second half where we made the most of our chances with five different goal scorers. Well done to Davonne, Maahir, Cooper M, Floilan and Jackson on some great finishing. Especially Jackson's penalty which was the last kick of the game and the season. The boys are to be commended for their effort throughout the season. Better completions and less numbers in the squad may well have led to more success. |
Soccer 7-9 Girls Joy |
Lost 2 - 0 Magdalene |
Matilda Lamaro |
After a disheartening loss to Mount Carmel last week, the girls went into today’s knockout fixture against Magdalene with poor morale. Magdalene scored what could be only described as a “scrappy” goal to get the lead on us. It was evident that the nature of the first goal definitely took a toll on the JTCC girls as they looked a shadow of their usual selves. Work rate had taken a tumble and miscommunication on the pitch became more and more frequent. Some great saves from goalkeeper Darcie Bennett kept the scoresheet static until they found their way through again in the second half to make it 2-0. Despite a terrific start to the campaign, the girls left the match at the final whistle disappointed knowing it was a winnable game. Credit to Matilda Lamaro (year 7) who was the silver lining of the otherwise lack-lustre performance, dropping deep from attack to apply pressure and constantly working for the ball and creating chances to a point where she had to be subbed off due to a poor tackle from one of the opposing midfielders. One to look back on and hopefully use as motivation to bounce back in our final game for securing third place. |
Netball 9-10 Girls Bulger |
Won 48 - 5 Vs Mt Annan |
Mia Drayton Shanae de Vos |
A strong game against Mt Annan Christian College today. Team work has improved significantly over the past two games as players are more comfortable together. Even though we had a substantial lead John Therry sustained their effort with great sportsmanship. All players demonstrated their versatility today, playing a variety of different positions on the court. It is a privilege to work with such a talented group. |
Netball 7-8 Girls Pedder |
Win 22 - 4 Mt Carmel |
Sienna Marelic Ruby Lipscombe |
The girls played an amazing game today, their strongest yet against Mt Carmel. Throughout this short seasons the team became much more fluent in their game play, and were able to make more seamless plays to get the ball to the goal end. Both shooters worked so well as a team during this game that saw a huge win. The defence end took every opportunity to get the ball back for our team to score. Well done!! |
Students have been enjoying their 7-10 Rec Sport Options and staff have complimented students on their positive attitude and effort during sport time. Students will now be participating in a new sport and are now moving onto their 6th rotation for the year.
Another reminder of the expectations during sport;
- Students are expected to behave appropriately and show respect to their classmates and teachers during sport.
- Students are expected to participate in sporting activities unless they have a note from a parent/guardians stating others.
- Students who are injured and have a note from a parent/guardian are able to complete homework/assessments during Sport time (Sports Detention/Injury)
- Students ARE NOT permitted to have food or drinks on our sport buses. We have had too many students leaving rubbish on the buses.

U16 Girls NSWCCC Rugby League
John Therry Catholic College recently had two students compete at the U16 Girls NSWCCC Rugby League Championships held at St Marys.
A massive achievement for Bridget Shearer and Annelise Hall to represent the Southern Country area at these Championships.
After the U18s age group debuted at these Championships earlier in the year, the U16s girls NSW All Schools Championships will be held in Port Macquarie in September, which is a strong indicator of the rise of the talent of women in rugby league.
After several tigh fought contests across two days, a massive congratulations to Bridget Shearer who was selected in the 20 women team.
We once again congratulate Bridget and Annelise on their efforts throughout the week and on their representative pathways selections.

Got SWAG?
Champfest is a film festival run during Term 2 as a celebration of the Marist Theme for the year (Created + Called) and the Feast Day of St. Marcellin Champagnat.
There were two categories - a short film of two minutes and a feature film of five or more minutes.
Short film - Charlotte Russell of 10 Conolly 1
Feature film - Ranniell Maningas of 10 Chisholm 2
Ranniell's feature film looks at the Marist Characteristics of A Love of Work, Family Spirit and Simplicity as his protagonist moves through the busyness of a week. His use of visual motifs, such as the clock, as well transitions and shots adds complexity to the film's overall narrative.
As part of their studies on 'Sustaining our Environment' in English this term, 7.5 spent significant time delving into a myriad of pressing environmental issues. Students created information reports that encompass a range of topics, from unveiling the far-reaching consequences of climate change on our world, to examining the alarming decline in biodiversity due to habitat degradation and poaching. Attached is a selection of work from the following students:
- Brayan Aziz and Jett Fleijsman, 'Light Pollution'
- Candice Stapleton, 'Koalas'
- Isabella Wragg-Leighton, excerpts from 'Protect Our Ocean'
- Martin Alexander Uy, 'Plastic Pollution'
- Skye Bishop, 'Save the Earth Today, and Survive Tomorrow'
