P& F MEETING – COME AND HAVE A SAY
The P&F group meet once per Term in Week 8 on Tuesday evening from 6.30 – 7.30pm in the staff common room. This is next week - Tuesday 14th June. Why not come along and contribute to the conversation that involves your child and their school..
THE IMPORTANCE OF PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT INTERVIEWS
As we move through the early onset of the winter chill we also come towards the end of this very busy Term and we reach the half way mark of the academic year for Years 7 - 10. Traditionally this is a time of formal reporting on the progress of the students to their families. I am often asked by parents, “how can I assist my child through their schooling. It is so different to when I went to school”.
The simplest way is to show interest and discuss progress and classwork and learning with them. Demonstrate to them that you think their learning is important. Take pride in their successes and work with them when they are less successful.
The Parent –Teacher – Student (P/T/S) interviews that take place in conjunction with the report are crucial for students to access learning success. It is a time to check on progress, identify areas for improvement, enjoy the successes and set a direction for further development in the learning for the rest of the year.
Research shows that student’s who have a family that is supportive and interested about their studies, perform better than equally talented students with no home support or interest.
They take more care and pride in their work and want to do their best, and this also pleases their parents. For parents, it is not about doing the work with or for them, it is about the time and presence that is generated by your genuine interest.
Parent interest also creates a unity with the class teacher in the home working with the College in ensuring the best possible learning outcomes for the child. I look forward to seeing all parents at these important interviews.
The interviews should comprise of two parts – the first an honest and open discussion of performance to date and the second a road map for improvement into the future. On many occasions the feedback provided from Staff will point out issues or areas of improvement and as parents we may not like to hear these. However, the true purpose of these interviews is to work together in framing conditions for your child to reach their maximum potential. And that is what we need to do – together.
I will be available at the Parent/Teacher/Student interviews to meet and discuss any matters with you that you would like to raise.
P/T/S interviews take place on Thursday 21st July
3.30PM - 7.00PM in the College Hall
Marcellin must have been a strong man, he walked daily into the mountains, to the Hamlets and villages that he served, covering very tough terrain in very cold, often snowy and dangerous conditions. Moved by the Spirit, he walked through the mountain villages to talk to children about God – to make Jesus known and loved. To make a difference in their lives.
As students at John Therry, every single student and teacher is a member of the Marist family.
As we sit here today we need to appreciate that not only are we a Marist family, but a part of a wider worldwide Marist family. All over the world this week, in Marist communities the Sub Tuum (a prayer to Mary) will be sung. Part of the larger Marist family making a difference.
Next year we will be aiming to renew our connection to Vanuatu, under the supervision of Mr Martyn, we will prepare to send some Yr 11 on a life building experience. Those young people next year, students of John Therry, will have the opportunity to BE Marcellin, and reach out to the community at Port Orly. To make a difference.
A celebration like today does not just happen. A special thank you to Mrs Fenessy for her work in preparing the liturgy and to Mrs Scott for all the certificates and awards. (Applause) I think that we can sometimes be little casual in appreciating the gifts of these wonderful people.
To the staff – magnificent, dedicated and really caring about you -the students and your life chances, you also make a real and genuine difference. I am proud of your commitment to the greater life of the school - and that makes the difference to so many of our students. You truly are like the early Marists. Students can you please thank your teachers.
I also acknowledge you the students. Thank you for how you have participated this morning. Thank you for supporting each other in the difficult times.
Today we also recognize members of our John Therry family who have excelled in various areas this year and I congratulate all those who will be presented.
The last time I spoke to you I talked about being intentional – taking responsibility for your life and not letting it just happen. As I walk down the A block corridor each day I see the sign – What will you do with your one wild and precious life. (Repeat)
So I ask you that question. What will you do, will you be intentional and make a difference as Marcellin did? I believe that you can.
Thank you
We will be conducting the P&F Term 2 meeting and AGM on Tuesday 14th June starting at 6:30pm.
All parents welcome.
Year 12 and Year 11 students recently completed their Half Yearly exams/assessments.
At the College Assembly on Thursday, 2nd June, we acknowledged the great work and effort of all our students and in particular, of our top achievers.
33 students in Year 12 are, currently, holding top rank in one or more of their courses of study while 56 Year 11 students received an 'A' grade in one or more of their courses of study.
The College would like to congratulate all these students!
This Term in VET (Vocational Education and Training) the students have been engaging in a variety of practical experiences.
Food and Beverage students had the great opportunity of participating in a Barista course at CBD coffee school. Here, the students were trained by industry professionals in how to make the perfect espresso and textured milk. The students then were able to enjoy a lunch in the city at Din Tai Fung where they were greeted by robots delivering their food. This was a great experience for the students to see how the hospitality Industry works and the way technology is incorporated into everyday life.
Kitchen Operations have been engaging in a number of service periods where their classroom experience is in fact turned into a real life commercial kitchen service period. The students are under time constraints to prepare, cook, serve and clean for customers within the school. The students have so far cooked an eggplant and burrata rigatoni with fresh focaccia bread as well as an assortment of canapes which included beetroot, caramelised onion and feta tart, asian inspired chicken sliders and pork and fennel sausage rolls.
Year 11 Construction students have completed their first project which was a wooden mallet. Throughout this project they were able to learn the following skills: Marking out , cutting straight and angled, shaping the handle and assembling pieces in order. This project allows them to learn the foundational skills of measuring out and constructing materials.
The year 12 Construction students have been constructing a door and window frame to the Australian standard size scale. The students have been cutting and nailing sections in a way to assemble the completed frame.
Year 11 Entertainment have been completing their work placement hours at Campbelltown theatre. Here they have been able to assist in set making, sound and lighting. The students have been immersed in the behind the scenes of producing a spectacular theatrical performance.

10-12 BOYS LEAGUE D1 |
Semi final vs. MCCC 32- 10 WIN |
We came up against MCCC in our semi final today and JT were ready for the challenge. The boys matched them physically and played some good football which dominated the game. A few good TA’s from Dechlan and big shots from Jaxon led the way which helped us get a grand final spot for next week. Well done boys! MVP: Jaxon Gray |
BGO |
10-12 GIRLS IND Cricket |
Semi final vs. MCCC 63-59 WIN |
We lost the toss and were asked to field. Afi, with the support of Allanda (runout) and Tamara (catch), got us off to a great start as we had Mount Carmel 2/-3 after the first over. Some consistent bowling by the rest of the girls, coupled with catches to Grace A (2), Zarli and Grace T and a runout by Grace Augustine meant we were able to restrict Mount Carmel to a score of 59. It was not our best batting display, we managed to claw our way to victory and set up a grand final against MacArthur Anglican next week. MVP: Fanaafi Fauese (3/-5 and 17 runs) |
ACN |
10-12 BOYS SOFTBALL |
vs. MAS 6-5 WIN |
The boys played very well and secured the win against MAS. The first innings was very close with two runs a piece. In the second innings with bases loaded, Mason hit a grand slam to get four runs which ultimately won us the game. MVP: Mason Mcphee |

11-12 GIRLS NETBALL |
Semi final vs. SBCC 28-2 WIN |
The girls came up against St Benedict’s in the first round of Semi’s. The whole team came out firing, despite arriving late and only playing 3 quarters, with stand out performances across the court. The girls worked as a unified unit turning over balls in each third of the court. The defence end of Amylia McKenzie and Sokowa Parker made it hard for SBCC in their shooting circle. The mid court of Ella Drayton, Maddy Tonna, Hannah Jones and Erica Powell made light work of moving the ball down the court to our shooting end. Our midcourters fed our shooters Kaitlin Kellett, Chantel Gill and Samara Varga who moved and made space for each other combining together to shoot 28 goals and taking us through to the second week of semi’s to play off for third position! MVP: Kaitlin Kellett |

10-12 GIRLS SOCCER |
vs St Pats 7-0 LOSS |
A disappointing way to finish what was an enjoyable season. Despite having several key players out, the girls maintained a positive attitude and gave it their best. Unfortunately St Pats were too strong and ended up winning comfortably. It was good to see a variety of students play and learn the game of soccer, always willing to learn and adapt. Thank you for a good season ladies. |

7-9 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Semi final vs. THAC 65-26 WIN |
Excellent return to form, underpinned by swarming defence providing 20 steals. All 10 players scored. Still need to improve to defeat MCCC next week in the final . Thank you to all the parents who supported the team today. MVP: Cohan Timmer |
HJS TWR |
7-9 GIRLS BASKETBALL |
Semi final vs. St Pats 34-25 WIN |
The JTCC 7-9 Girls Basketball team were able to continue they're longest ever win streak today against the formidable St. Pats squad. We were able to take a strong lead in the first half with Georgina Akol taking strong command of the court and scoring constantly. This momentum continued with Isabella-Grace Marshall and Navara Mataipule stepping up to add some well earned buckets to hold our lead till the final buzzer. A good offense also needs a good defense, and that was brought by Laura Augustine who always managed to be in the right position to stop many potential points from the opposition. The final score ended in 34-25 with JTCC at the top! MVP - Georgina Akol |
BWB |
7-9 BOYS HOCKEY |
vs. OPAC 0-1 LOSS |
The boys had back to back loses going down narrowly to Oran Park. The boys started with their backs against the wall struggling to keep possession of the ball. Some good tackles from Harrison ensure we kept the game close. Unfortunately on the last stroke of the game Oran Park scored from a penalty corner giving the boys their second loss of the season. MVP: Harrison Clinch |
NWN CWE |
7-9 MIXED FRISBEE |
vs. WCCS 5- 0 WIN |
What an exciting and fast paced game this was! Our JTCC mixed Frisbee team dominated from the outset. They worked well as a team and devised strategies to combat the wind and shut down the offensive plays from the William Carey Team. Brooklyn Osborne scored twice, while Sienna Marelic and Alex Nohra both scored one goal each. A great display of sportsmanship was shown by JT team members who assisted an opposition team member with a cramp The students thought that the edge given to today’s game may have come from their celebrity “Super Coach” Mrs White, however, I would have to say that it was pure grit and determination from the whole team that prevailed! MVP: Alexander Nohra |
JTCC ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
This year we went into the Athletics Carnival with Chisholm, Ryan and Murray all having a carnival win each. Can Conolly claim a carnival victory, or will our 2021 athletics carnival winners, Murray, be too strong?
As always participation is key to age champion titles and final house points. As such, a number of valuable points are still unallocated as the javelin event still needs to be completed at school, and may be pivotal when assigning Age champions. A tip for 2023 captains is to ensure all events have maximum competitors. Throughout the day students would rotate between the Track and Field events in their respective age groups, with Conolly and Murray House having the highest participation points for the day.
Friday dawned overcast and very chilly. Despite this, staff arrived excited for the day and students were very punctual in arriving at Campbelltown Stadium. The 200m events were the first event scheduled for the day, and the first track events utilising electronic timing gates. The gates allowed us to have time to run a number of additional track events, including the 400m and 1500m. The turn out and enthusiasm from all the students were great, and especially from the year 12 cohort, which was fantastic.
A number of students were feeling invincible and broke some records; 5 new records and establishment records set in all divisions for the 1500m - see table below for our new record holders. Highlight of the day was Deng Deng (year 7) smashing the Jaidon Cosmidis’ 2021 record in the 12 year boys high jump and having the whole school around him to hype him up.
The Annual Yr 12 House Challenge is always a spectacularly chaotic event, with many tasks involved to give more students an opportunity to be involved. Students had to dig their house coloured wooden egg out of the sand pit before walking the wooden egg across to the target challenge (Students had to knock the egg off the ledge before completing 4 legs of the egg relay (hopping, passing, kicking the egg from end to end). The students finished the challenge in a human pyramid where the egg was thrown to the competitor on top, and then a whole track run with the house team to signify the end of the race. The race was mayhem and Mr. Williamson (slightly biased in his judging) ended up disqualifying the majority of the teams, with all four houses being declared equal winners.
Throughout the day Murray developed a strong overall lead and steamed ahead without looking back. With the javelin events left, will the straggling teams be able to catch them?
The Diocesan carnival will be held on Friday 29th July at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium. Our JTCC will be published on Compass once javelin is completed.
