IT’S BEEN A TOUGH WEEK AT JOHN THERRY
The incredibly sad news that we received on Monday morning of the passing of a student on Sunday afternoon sent waves of sadness across the school community. This popular young man from Yr 8 has an equally popular sister in Yr 11 and both year groups were hugely affected, as were so many Staff.
As I explained to the students at Assembly, I do not know why things like this happen. I am perplexed and dismayed. I, like all, have no idea the destiny that God has for us. But as a Catholic I stand firm in the belief that Travis will be held safe and will one day be reunited with his family.
We also had the passing of the mother of a student in Yr 12 and her brother in Yr 9. We keep both of these families and particularly our students in our prayers.
CHAMPAGNAT DAY
On the 2nd January 2017, we celebrated 200 years, the bicentenary of the founding of the Marist Brothers’ by St Marcellin Champagnat and the commencement of Marist schools across the world. He was a man for his times, he got in and did the hard work, rolled up his sleeves. He was criticized for doing work that was not seen as fit for a Priest, but it made a difference to others.
His spirituality was based on Mary, the mother of Jesus. We celebrated Champagnat Day on Wednesday this week (although the day is actually Thursday 6th June). This day reminds us of the work of this vital French Priest and his life in changing the lives of the poor French and educating children to release them from poverty and improve their lives. The French Revolution promoted living by reason and not faith and this drove his passion to spread the message of Jesus and to make Jesus known and loved.
My congratulations go to all Champagnat Day award winners and especially to the winners of the new award – The Three Violets Award. The Marist’s use the three violets to represent humility, honesty and simplicity.
PENTECOST SUNDAY
This Sunday Christians worldwide will celebrate the feast of Pentecost. This commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. At this stage there was no movement that could be called a ‘church’ but that changed with the Spirit in them.
We cannot live as God would have us by our own efforts, gifts and determination. We need the life and power of the Spirit. The English word ‘Pentecost’ is a trasnslation of the Greek work pentekostos, which means fifty. It comes from the ancient Christian expression pentecoste hemera, which means fiftieth day. So as we approach this special Catholic event I reflect upon the early followers of Jesus who had just seen their leader murdered, and then witnessed him risen. They went out and took up the challenge of proclaiming the Good News. I hope and pray that at some time in our lives we also experience the power of the spirit.
The three virtues of humility, simplicity, and modesty come to us from Marcellin Champagnat. These virtues give a quality of authenticity and kindness to our relationships with all the people we meet. These virtues are likened to three violets hidden in the garden, you can’t always see them however you know they are there through their beautiful perfume.
Humility
Calls us to be humble before God and others, to be grounded in the real world, using our gifts and talents in the service of others with a sense of self-forgetfulness not looking for praise or success or recognition.
Simplicity
Calls us to be honest and genuine relationships with others, lacking pretence.
Modesty
Calls us to be polite toward others not seeking to impose our views or be ‘in the face’ of another. It calls us to be humble when successful or victorious and gracious when defeated.

CAMPBELLTOWN ROTARY YOUTH EXCELLENCE AWARDS

STAGE 5 MUSIC PERFORMANCE EVENING
The Stage 5 Music Performance Night was held on Monday 13 May in F block at the school from 6.30-8.00pm. It is essential that students gain experience in performance to enhance their skills for the Music course. The Stage 5 Music students performed a piece from their current topics, Australian Music for Year 9 and Film Music for Year 10.
For this first concert experience students were asked to bring a peer, friend or family member to support them on the evening. This supportive audience assisted these students in gaining invaluable performance experience with their new repertoire on the evening. The performance component of the elective course is a crucial one, which all students need to experience. Listening and Composing components make up the three strands of the elective Music course.
Students who performed on the night were:
Year 10: Jarnika Anthony, Jordja Anthony, Ben Cooper, Joel Coskerie, Chris Hall, Natasha Kosztka, Damien Kovac and Damien Thomas
Year 9: Karen Attard, Corey Broughton, Megan Cain, Shane Cathro, Grace Diaz, Cameron Donaldson, Michael Fernandes, Chantel Gill, Liam Harber-Kerr, Adam Heaton, Riley Helm, Mani Jacob, Lachlan Jenart, Eli Matic and Imogen Rashleigh.
Thank you to all the parents, family members and friends who attended the evening. Special thanks to Mrs. Morton for her organization of this event, and to her fellow Music teachers Mrs. Blunden and Mrs. Curtis who gave valuable feedback to the students after the event.

YEAR 8 VISUAL ARTS EXCURSION; CAMPBELLTOWN ARTS CENTRE
On Wednesday May 15th, the four Year 8 Visual Arts classes with Mrs. Fenessy, Mrs. O’Brien, Mr. Barton and Mr. Peters visited the Campbelltown Arts Centre. All up 90 students took part in this excursion. All students had their Critical Study Assessment Tasks on this excursion, using them as a basis for an in class task at school. In addition, students viewed the sculpture garden outside; examining three-dimensional form, which they are creating in their Artmaking at school. Student introduced to the gallery by the education officer initially, then allowed to viewed the different exhibition spaces in the gallery. One of the works of main focus was the sculptural work was called ‘Between Two Rivers’, referencing the local indigenous links in our community. With a few players out due to injury the spirits of the team were lifted by the arrival of Olivia Southby, who didn’t want to let the team down. We faced St. Pats in a battle for first spot. We started well, taking two wickets in the first over, and restricted them to just 13 after two more. Unfortunately we lost too many wickets in our innings and never looked likely to chase down the total. A big thank you to Emily and Celeste for filling in today. |
