The John Therry Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 30th April which is one of our great community building events. The smoke haze cleared quickly to make for a beautiful autumn day and students were in great spirits. A full report will be in next week's newsletter but a big thank-you to Mrs Leach and Mr Bodeker as organisers, and all the students who attended. A special mention to our Year 12 students who dressed up and set a wonderful tone and atmosphere for the day.
Uniform - Girls Pants
The College Executive have been approached by a number of students and parents regarding the option for girls to wear pants as part of the school uniform. This has become a mandatory option in Department of Education schools, and many Catholic and Independent schools have provided this option also. We are supportive as a college of exploring this and will consult with our students, parents and teachers shortly. The P & F Meeting in Week 8 will have this item for discussion and all are welcome to attend. A committee will be established to explore options and design after intial consultation and this committee will include parents, students and staff.
Tell Them from Me Survey
John Therry conducts satisfaction surveys of parents, students and staff each year through the 'tell them from me platform'. Staff and students have completed the surveys this week, and parents will receive an email shortly that provides the opportunity to provide feedback to the school. This information is highly valued and informs school strategic planning. We would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete this if you can.
Year 11 & 12 Parent Teacher Interviews - Monday 17th May

The first session will run from 3:30-5:00pm and the second session from 6:00-7:30pm. We hope to see you there for this important opportunity to support students to achieve to their potential.
A reminder that it is most important that as parents, we follow the road rules in
The Appin Massacre memorial was held on Sunday 18th April and John Therry has a history of attending and commemorating this event. It is an important part of the history of our region and we remember those who lost their lives on this day.
As quoted on the Appin Massacre Monument:
The massacre of men, women and children of the Dharawal Nation occurred near here on 17 April 1816.
Fourteen were counted this day, but the real number will never by known.
We acknowledge the impact this had and continues to have on the Aboriginal people of this land.
We are deeply sorry.
We will remember them.

At John Therry Catholic College we offer a number of Vocational Education and Training courses (VET) that allow the students to receive a nationally accredited certificate whilst still completing their HSC. Each year, students completing a VET course must complete 35 to 70 hours of work placement within their industry. Macarthur Workplace Learning Program (MWLP) organises these work placements for over 6500 students.
Students were nominated by their host employers for outstanding performances during their work placement. Over the two regions there are 500 host employers who take 6500 students. These host employers were asked to nominate students who they believe are worthy of the award and put in an exceptional effort over the course of their work placement. The host employers only nominated 46 students and after an interview process there were only 24 finalists.
Our very own Luke Kotsou was a finalist for the Construction work placement student of the year award. Unfortunately Luke did not take home the main award however it was an amazing achievement to be nominated and be a finalist amongst the Greater Macarthur and Greater Canterbury Regions.
We congratulate Luke Kotsou on the consistent effort he put in during his work placement and wish him all the best in his future career as an Electrician.
SPORT UPDATE - Term 2, week 2
MISA Round 1 - vs. SBCC
Tuesday week 2 was going to be a busy day with round 1 of MISA kicking off. Unfortunately all outdoor competitions were cancelled due to hazardous air quality, which was disappointing for athletes and coaches. Indoor cricket and basketball were able to go ahead indoors and our three teams started the term 2 competition with a bang.

In the first MISA cricket game the girls were fantastic. They worked as a team and encouraged each other, with the majority of the team being new players without background knowledge on cricket. The girls started with a win, scoring 89 to -11. All the girls all had outstanding performances off and on the field and showing great sportsmanship. Most importantly everyone had fun. Phenomenal first game, scoring 45 points in the second half. All 10 players contributed to the scoring with four players in the double digits. Results underpinned by tenacious defence and unselfish passing, always finding the open man. Well done. MVP: Garang Bol (14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals) |

Mr. Jefferys |
19-26 SBCC Win |
This was the first game that these girls have played together, we were off to a good start with Navara knocking down two early baskets to start our season. We struggled to get back on defence in the second half and SBCC were able to capitalize with a 10 point lead. With some fantastic defence we were able to get the lead to 4 before some late fouls put us out of reach. The girls are eager for our first win next week! MVP: Navara Mataipule |

Diocesan Open boys and girls Football Carnival
Thursday and Friday last week our open boys and girls football teams went down to beautiful Woonona to compete in the Diocesan carnivals. Despite a very talented team, the boys team finished in 5th place and missed out progressing to the next level. The girls were in a similar boat, with a strong side not quite being able to crack an elusive top four spot, also finishing in 5th.
Despite this, the following students were selected in the Wollongong Diocesan team:
- Patrick Picot
- Andrew Brown
- Kynan Sparkes
- Tasmyn Reynolds
- Lachlan Hanney (shadow)
- Olivia Sloan
- Zarli Lakeman
Diocesan Cross Country
54 JTCC students had a very early start on Monday morning, heading all the way down to Nowra’s ‘Willandra’ to compete in the Diocesan cross country. All students represented JTCC with pride, and should be very happy with their efforts.
Special mention to the four students who had an exceptional run and have been successfully selected into the Wollongong Diocese Cross Country team:
- Dominic Baker - 1st place: Junior boys Multi-class
- Lachlan Vacchini - 1st place: Senior boys Multi-class
- Darcy Wilson - 2nd place: 15 year boys
- Jaidon Cosmidis - 4th place: 12 years boys
Mason McPhee
Mason's representative team 'Macarthur Colts’ played in the NSW State Baseball Championships from April 8th to 12th. They won the whole tournament and were undefeated. They will now compete at the Australian National Championships which are to be held from the 8th to the 13th May in Lismore. A win at nationals will qualify them for the Senior League World Series. Mason plays catcher and first base and this is his 2nd state title and fourth national championship. Congratulations Mason, and good luck!
