Dear Parents / Guardians,
I sit to write this on Thursday night and am amazed at how quickly the first Term has gone. But a lot has happened. The College Swimming Carnival, Musical, Year 7 Camp and Year 12 Retreat have been highlights. We have five teams in MISA finals washed out on Tuesday and all students are progressing in their studies. The coming week sees the College Cross Country. Well done to all.
PALM SUNDAY AND HOLY WEEK
As Catholics we are called to attend the liturgies that occur on these very important days. Many may choose Thursday to join in the Mass of the Lords Supper or the veneration of the cross on Good Friday (where we vividly recall the journey of Jesus to the cross and his death). While the Easter Vigil on Saturday is the main celebration of the period and lasts a little longer and starts later than the usual Saturday mass. It was here that the faithful waited outside the tomb of Jesus. The Jewish Sabbath commenced at sunset on Friday and the body of Jesus was not fully prepared for burial – so they waited during Saturday, praying and mourning.
Finally, we reach Easter Sunday, where Jesus rises and provides hope for the world. To miss any of the days of the Triduum is like missing one act in a three act play. It is best understood to be a three-day liturgy attended on various occasions. The purpose of the three days is not to re-enact historical events, but rather to the engage the paschal mystery as it is being celebrated in the midst of those gathered.
The power of this cannot be underestimated. These three days become our preparation for our willing participation in the paschal mystery, so that it becomes our way of being Christian in our daily lives.
As we move into the Term 1 school holidays, I pray that you can all enjoy a restful holiday and enjoy the beautiful Easter weather and immerse yourself in the solemnity and joy of the Easter liturgies during Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. I trust that all families will make time to visit their local Parish and enter into some of the services and events offered.
LONG SERVICE LEAVE
I would like to inform the community of John Therry that I will be accessing LSL for the first five weeks of Term 2. The prime reason for this is the wedding of my daughter. She lives in Lennox Head. My son is married and has one child and another due in May. So it is busy at the Marshall’s and I am looking forward to spending time with family.
I am very happy to announce that Mr Brad McAllister will be the Acting Principal in my absence and Mr Brad Humbles the Acting Assistant
Principal. As Mr McAllister is well known to the community for his pastoral presence and educational knowledge the College is in good hands.
APPIN MASSACRE MEMORIAL EVENT
I remind all that the memorial event for the Appin Massacre takes place on Sunday 18th April. Commencing at 11.00 and concluding by 3.00pm with the formal ceremony taking place at 12.00noon. Traditionally the John Therry aboriginal students play a significant role on this day with music and dancers.
This event commemorates the massacre of aboriginal people – men, women and children, of the Dharawal nation. Fourteen were counted but the true count will never be known. This night attack came after months of trying to round up the local people with no success. This was partly because the local settlers supported the Aboriginal efforts to avoid the soldiers.
7-10 PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
On Wednesday 31st March and Thursday 1st April we have an opportunity for parents and carers of students in Year 7-10 to meet with teachers and discuss Term 1 progress. Students will receive their Interim Reports on Wednesday 31st March to discuss at these meetings.
Details for the interviews are listed below.
Wednesday 31st March - Face to Face Interviews - School Hall - 3:30-7:30pm (Dinner Break for staff from 5:30-6pm)
Thursday 1st April - Zoom meetings - 8:30am to 11am.
Instructions for booking these interviews has been sent out via email.
Year 11 and 12 students will have an opportunity to meet teachers mid next term on the 17th May after their reports have been distributed.
This is an important opportunity to celebrate achievements and discuss how each child can progress and improve with their learning and we hope to see you there.
As we near the end of Term 1, a reminder that students are normally required to wear full winter uniform including long pants, blazer and tie for boys and winter skirt, blazer and stockings for girls.
However with the recent flooding some of the winter uniform items at Lowes Macarthur Square are out of stock so summer uniform will still be allowed for the start of Term 2, until Lowes can update our stock.
We do have a large number of good quality second hand blazers and sports jackets that have been donated. We also have a small number of most other items of uniform available.
If you are in need of any uniform items and would be interested in the donated stock, please make contact with the Pastoral care team:

or contact the relevant Year Coordinator.
The new 2021 crop of Youth Ministry Leaders were a mixture of nervousness and excitement to host John Therry Catholic College’s first LIVE! Event for 2021 on Thursday, 25/3. Their first task was to hold a concert in the shelter shed for the eyes of the school to witness in all its glory. With a large crowd gathering and school COVID rules being adhered to, the lunchtime concert was performed with great gusto to the joy of the students. The main event for the YML’s however, was at 3:30pm in William E Murray Hall. The students gathered at the back of the hall to enjoy some snacks and to formally meet the YML’s in a more relaxed atmosphere. With energy levels peaking, students participated in some ice breaker games to burn off energy before being introduced to the theme for the evening “Connected: Be”. Overall the night was a great success for all involved with students being commended for their incredible reverence and participation throughout the event.
Thank you to the many teachers who gave up their time to assist in the festivities and also to the students who attended and put themselves out there to be present and open to the words of Jesus.

Grand Final 44-48 MCCC Win |
A gut wrenching loss. We played brilliantly initially against a much bigger opposition. Despite hitting nine three pointers, the boys lost in the last minute of the game. Not meant to be this year, thank you all. MVP - Devontay Zaglas |

Grand Final 27-33 St Pats Win |
I have always said that it doesn’t matter if you win or lose but how you play the game. If you read any of my previous reports and they say anything else then they have obviously been edited by Mr Bodeker (except for the stuff that sounded good...that was all me). If you read the reports you will know that I am a humble man, in fact I am the best at being humble. I say all this to say that despite our loss today, to a St Pats team that seemed to have gained several ex WNBA players since our last game, I could not be prouder of the efforts of the girls. Once again we were short handed. We only had six players. We didn’t even have our team manager Hannah Craig there - so it’s probably her fault we lost. Despite this adversity we put in a fantastic effort. We rushed back on defence. We shot when we were open. Shontay randomly shoulder barged people. It was a great game. While it would’ve been nice to bring home the trophy it was not to be. At the end of the game I told the girls how proud I was. And even though they stared at me in silence I could tell they wanted to say “Thank you sir. You are the wind beneath our collective wings.” I’m not sure why they didn’t say it or why they called me lame when I read this report to them. But I could tell they wanted to say that and in the end that is all that matters. Thanks for a great season girls. We will get them next year.
MVP - Sarah White |

Mr Williamson |
Grand Final 2-1 JTCC Win |
Excellent match, worthy of a Final. 3 very close games with the JT underdogs coming through with a 27-25 win in the third. Congratulations to the team, firstly on their selection in the team ahead of over 50 trialists; secondly for their willingness to learn and thirdly for the quality of their decision making, belief and execution. Well done on a great win and a three-peat in winning this trophy for John Therry CC. MVP Darcy Wilson |

3rd Place Playoff 116-77 JTCC Win |
We won the toss and sent SBCC in to bat and managed to restrict St Benedict’s to 77. We put together our best batting performance today with all pairs contributing significantly to our overall score. While treating their opposition with respect, our girls showed their dominance in all facets and came away with a convincing win.

Diocesan Results
On a very rainy and bleak Wednesday, 17th March 2021, a bus load of eleven boys ventured down to Gibson Park (Thirroul) to try their hand at the Dio Rugby League Trials. The rain ceased and provided the stage for what eventuated as being two very competitive trials.
The 15’s took the field first with a total of forty boys vying for positions. The teams essentially had boys from the Macarthur Region up against the Illawarra contingent. The footy was fast, tough and of a high standard. Four of our John Therry boys were successfully named in the Wollongong Diocesan Representative team. Congratulations to Zac Dittavong, Noah McKenzie, Levi McGuinness and Riley Oitmanon on their selection to this side.
The Open Boys’ Trial was also shaping up to be highly contested. Unfortunately, after just 26 minutes of play the trial had to be abandoned due to a serious injury being sustained by one of the players. Based on what was witnessed during warm-up preparations and initial play along with the player representative profiles submitted prior to the event, the team was selected. Congratulations goes to Filemu Logai-Lusiano, Emmanuel Fatialofa and Braydon Wickey on their selections.
John Therry Catholic College was fortunate to have seven boys selected across the two representative teams who will travel to Wagga in Term Two to compete at the next level.
It was a pleasure to accompany this group of young men on this day. Their conduct both on and off the field was commendable and they were the living example of JT Pride!
Bill Turner Cup - Round 1
JTCC versus Cabramatta High School: Despite torrential rain, flooding and some ground closures Bill Turner Cup players and coaches were determined to play on Tuesday 22nd March. The game was held at Lynwood Park and JTCC played exceptionally well, winning convincingly 9 - 0.
Good luck to Mr. Webb and the boys for their next round in Term 2!
A few general reminders:
- Please make sure you are on time for Sport each Tuesday, and read the run sheet on Tuesday morning. Socks need to be white or JTCC socks, and visible at or above the ankle.
- The new MISA/Representative shorts can be purchased for $20 from the Finance Office, and picked up from the Sports Office. There are Rugby/AFL, OzTag and Multi shorts.
