As I write the final Newsletter for the 2020 school year, I am again staggered at how fast the year has gone. However, at times, in the midst of the worst of Covid, the time seemed to drag as we struggled with remote learning and isolation. None of us knew what this year would hold when we started in January, or of the amazing resilience of the Australian people and the great job our governments have done in managing the pandemic.
Congratulations go to the Term 4 MISA sports teams where John Therry captured three out of nine premierships (and two Runners Up).
- Yr 7 -9 Boys Oz Tag
- Yr 7 – 9 Boys AFL
- Yr 10/11 Mixed Frisbee
The students were very pleased to be able to return to the sporting field and demonstrate their skills and teamwork.
As we finish this year, like all others, there is some Staff movement. I would like to thank the following departing Staff for their work and commitment to the John Therry community over a range of time spans:-
- Mrs Catherine Waud
- Ms Amber Meadley
- Mrs Katrina Blunden
- Mrs Kim Gotty-Lees
- Ms Catherine Dunn
- Ms Hayley Cascarino
- Mr Tobias Winter
With the Covid restrictions almost changing daily we are hopeful that from the commencement of next year we may almost be back to ‘normal’.
I remind all families that the standards of John Therry need to be met by all students and returning to school next year we expect correct uniform, equipment, hairstyles and punctuality. We have been informed by Lowes that some items of uniform are still delayed in transit or on the wharves.
CAMPBELLTOWN CELEBRATES 200 years – In 1820 the first permanent European settlers came to Campbelltown to commence their lives here. This was the same year that the fledgling colony had their first Catholic Priest arrive – Fr John Joseph Therry. It was not long before Fr Therry had visited the area and commenced lobbying for some land to build a Church. This was the original St John’s, Campbelltown.
We also remember the Dharawal people who have been the custodians of this land we call Campbelltown for 50,000 years.
I wish all families a happy and Holy Advent time, a wonderful Christmas break spent with family and friends and a Happy New Year.
What a year 2020 has been! We saw a few challenges come our way but in true John Therry spirit, we kept going and doing what we do best - commit to the task at hand and today we saw all the hard work come to fruition when over (100) students from Year 7-10 were awarded certificates and medals for excellence in various areas of College life - Academic, Social, Sport and Spiritual. While I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the award recipients for doing so well, I also want to thank each and every student at John Therry Catholic College who came to school each day in 2020 (remotely or in person) with the aim of succeeding in all that they endeavoured to do. The College is proud of the commitment and diligence of the staff and students..
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and caregivers for their support of all that we do at the College. It is much appreciated.
Have a safe and blessed Christmas season and I look forward to working with you in 2021.

JTCC INITIATIVES FOR ST VINCENT DE PAUL
Annual Christmas Hamper Appeal
This term was the annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal, in which learning groups were given a task of filling a Christmas Hamper for the local charity "Church of Christ" - Ambarvale, which is directly connected to St Vincent de Paul charity. With a shorter turnaround period than usual, students accepted the challenge with numerous learning groups filling more than (2) hampers. Year 7 Chisholm 2 under the leadership of Mrs Roet filled (6) hampers in total with Mrs Roet quoting their "deep desire to help those who are less fortunate and may not be able to have food or presents for Christmas". With many students understanding the importance of upholding our Catholic and Marist values, we were able to collect (46) hampers in total. All of these hampers will be donated to local community members who are struggling or need extra assistance during the holiday period.
Fundraising for St Vincent de Paul
This week a group of (15) students all came together to raise money for St Vincent de Paul through a John Therry car wash. Accompanied by Mr Tannous and led by Mr Nau the students washed over (20) staff cars across two days to ensure that the happy customers could drive home in shiny bright vehicles.
On Monday November 30th, John Therry hosted a Transition Day for Aboriginal students that will be starting Year 7 at JTCC in 2021. The children took part in a yarning circle where our JT students were asked questions on what it was like as a Year 7 student. While boys learnt to play the Didgeridoo, the girls learnt a dance. The students were also given a tour of the school grounds before finishing off the day with making and eating toasted cheese sandwiches and eating icecream.
WHICH DEVICE SHOULD I BUY FOR JTCC?
With the rapid progression of technology, it becomes very difficult to understand why one laptop costs more than another. Use this article as a guide to provide you with the tools to determine the most appropriate device for your child.
There are a few main things to keep in mind when choosing a suitable device. Consider the following:
- What will be my child's primary use for this device? Schoolwork only or leisure activities such as gaming and content creation. Using this answer will allow you to make decisions on the specifications of your device.
- Processor: Think of this as the brain of the device. Multimedia and games require higher-powered processors. Stay away from low-end single-core options.
- RAM (Memory): This determines how many applications can be open at the same time. Think of this as a workspace for programs to operate in whilst open.
- Storage: Think about what kind of documents your child will store. Media including videos and photos use a lot of storage. John Therry utiliseS Google Drive for Education so schoolwork won't contribute much if any storage. Think about the types of apps you will install. Productivity apps don't require much storage but games and media creation tools will.
- Graphics Processor: Most modern devices will come with reasonable "integrated" graphics to perform most tasks, including light gaming and media creation or technical drawing applications. However, for the best experience, you will require a "dedicated" graphics processor. These are generally found in Mid to High Tier devices.
- Screen Size: The common size for a display is 13". This is a good start for a device. John Therry discourages looking for smaller screens unless portability is a key factor in your decision.
- How long do I expect the device to last? Lower cost options generally will last a shorter length of time than higher-cost options. Consider jumping from a low to medium tier if you want the device to last longer.
- What kind of support do I want? Consider your warranty options at the time of purchase. Check what is supplied by the manufacturer and see if extensions are available.
- Do you need any accessories? John Therry highly encourages the use of a protective case. Does your child require a wireless mouse or are you able to connect USB devices without a "dongle"? Investigate these when purchasing.
- Will I need to frequently charge the device? Looking for a device that has an 8+ hour battery life is critical as this means the device will last the school day. This will also reduce the number of times charging is required extending the life of the battery.
We do have partner portals in which you can select a device that has been seen, tested and approved for use at John Therry. These devices are considered durable, and generally come with a longer warranty that you will find from a retail environment.
If you are still unsure or looking for further advice, please contact the college.
