This year our House and Sports Captain attended the Year 7 camp on Wednesday night. Our captain's, Sophia, Katherine, Hollie, Anthony, Riley, Cameron, Madison, Saidy and Olivia all dined with the boys after spending some free time playing games with our newest cohort. The captains then led a liturgy based around our house values and prayers with the students responding and engaging beautifully with the experience.
The captains took their respective groups to separate areas and practised their house chants for a “chant off” in the hall. All students participated fantastically well with a very difficult decision for our judges. While waiting for the points decision the students engaged in an impromptu “dance off” with some stars shining brightly with talent. The points tally at the end of the night was Murray, Conolly and Ryan on 200 points and Chisolm with 150 points.
Some words from our captains from the experience:
Enjoyed having dinner with some of the boys and getting to know them, good to see them showing some JT Pride. Riley
Had an amazing dinner with the boys, being served by them start to finish. Cameron
Was great to meet the new faces of the year 7s and create a bond with them early in their John Therry journey, creating a passion for house spirit and JT Pride from the beginning. - Hollie
The new group of year 7’s made a positive impact and impression, joining them at dinner was delightful as well as their enthusiasm in house spirit and house cheers. They’re a very likeable and mature bunch. Sophia
Thanks to our Year 12 House and Sport leaders for giving up their time and talents for this very worthwhile evening.
YEAR 7 WELCOME BBQ & INFORMATION NIGHT
Our annual Year 7 Welcome BBQ and information evening was a great success this week. Staff, parents and students enjoyed a barbeque dinner with the college executive, pastoral coordinators and learning group mentors. This was a great way for families to feel informed and connected to the college community.
Each house was allocated a classroom where students could introduce their parents to their learning group mentor. Learning Group was explained and there was an opportunity to ask any questions that may have arisen after six weeks of high school.
Many parents also had the opportunity to chat and make new acquaintances. Thank you to Mr McGrath, Mr Muscatello, Mr Pearce, Mrs Roet, Miss Schnebli, Mr Bodeker and Miss Killen for running these small group talks.
Mrs Ramchandra discussed the college assessment policy and assessment handbook. These are available on Google Classroom and will be uploaded to the new college website.
Mr Marshall spoke about the partnership we have as teachers and parents. We work together to provide the best outcomes for the students. The large attendance showed that families are very supportive of their child's education at John Therry.
Mr Humbles and Mr McAllister spoke about compass, communication, pastoral care, wellbeing and daily structures.
Thanks also to Mr Martyn and Mr Robinson for your attendance on the night and for cooking the BBQ.
We look forward to a great year ahead for our Year 7 cohort.
PROJECT COMPASSION LAUNCH - PANCAKE DAY
Last week we launched our Project Compassion commitment for 2020. The day was a fantastic success with many students from Years 9 and 10 helping with the set up, cooking, selling and serving and the pack down. A massive thank you to those students that served and of course many thanks to the students and staff that participated in the eating.
A very warm welcome to Ms Jaimi Adams who will be coordinating our Social Justice initiatives this year with plenty of help from our Youth Ministry team. Thanks to Ms Adams, Mr Tran and the Youth Ministry Leaders and Mrs Fenessy the day raised approximately $200. The next fundraising day will be held on Wednesday the 11th of March at the LIVE concert.
Thanks for your support of this very worthwhile cause.
SPORT REPORT TERM 1 2020 Round 4 vs Mt. Carmel Catholic College
Team |

10-12 Boys Basketball |
Mr Peters |
Win 67 - 53 |
Despite being a few players down, the team stepped up against a much bigger opposition. Moses had a monster game - with 28 points and 18 rebounds, leading the team to victory. MVP: Moses Bartley |
10-12 Girls Basketball |
Mr Humbles |
Win 35-28 |
Missing a few key players due to Work Placement, injury and illness, we knew we were in for a tough game against a good Mt Carmel team. With only five of our regular players available, Danielle Newby and Reijeli Rayawa came along to lend a hand. Some tough defence by Shontay McClymont and some enthusiasm from Ash Ballard and Phoebe Phoumovong kept us just ahead of Mt Carmel throughout the first term. Into the second half, as players began to tire, Sarah White and Piper Takiari took over and led John Therry to a great victory 35 - 28 to leave us undefeated with one regular round game to go. MVP: Sarah White |
7-9 Boys Volleyball |
Mr Williamson |
Draw 2-2 |
A very close match so a fair result. Learnt a lot in terms of movement around the court and played better with each game. A good indicator of the level we are capable of. MVP: Talmage Nouata |
7-9 Girls Volleyball |
Mrs Pellegrino |
Loss 0-3 |
Another close game this week for the JT volleyball girls vs. Mt Carmel, a strong and consistent opposing team. With each set being only a few points difference, Mt. Carmel showed a much stronger side to win the set. A massive improvement from all girls, playing their best game against one of the strongest teams in MISA. MVP: Gese Satuatasi |
10-12 Girls Oztag |
Mr Tran |
Win 11-1 |
With a turn of the weather creating ominous grey clouds above, the forecast was dire. Would this translate and affect the ladies game play? No. Strong 11-1 winners against Mount Carmel with whipping passes from left to right and right to left creating as many holes in the defense as there were on the field. MVP - Madison Larner |
10-12 Boys Oztag |
Mr McGrath |
Win 6-4 |
Unfortunately we were limited to 8 players today which kept us with no bench for the whole game. The boys were fatigued late in the second half but found some energy to come home late in the game. Unfortunately the game was cut short due to injury and John Therry came away with the win as we were leading at the time. A very good second half boys well done! MVP Hayden Roberts |
7-9 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Mr Geribo |
Win 81-57 |
Mt. Carmel won the toss and JT was sent in to bat. The first pair got 24, the second got 16 runs, third got 10 and the last finished with 31. A solid total of 81 held off Mt. Carmel, who only managed 57. MVP: Laura Augustine |
7-9 Boys Softball |
Mrs. Stanley |
Win 8-6 |
Well done to the boys today, with a fantastic performance against Mt Carmel. We started stronger than we have in previous weeks and as a result were able to come away with the win. Some great running between bases today and exceptional batting from Mason McPhee scoring TWO home runs for the team. MVP: Mason McPhee |
7-9 Girls Hockey |
Mr Chapman |
Loss 0-2 |
A great display of effort and enthusiasm from the girls. Inexperience cost us a few chances, however being our first game it was a fantastic game. Well done ladies. MVP: Nikita Claassen |

Uniform
Reminder regarding uniform: Diocese players are reminded that the school sells representative shorts and socks, for the combined cost of $30. This needs to be paid at the Finance Office, then you must take the receipt to the Sports Office to collect the uniform.
All players representing the school are reminded to be in full sport uniform before boarding charter bus at school. This includes joggers, socks, jumpers. Any players out of uniform will not be allowed to board the bus and compete at the competition. Return to school in uniform is also required.
The shorts, can be worn for MISA games, Diocesan competitions and other State/Knockout competitions. These shorts are only to be worn for representative activities. These soccer and rugby league shorts will match the latest jerseys the school has purchased for the students.
We have had reports of some 'near misses' in and around the school at pick up and drop off time, particularly with cars exiting the school site onto Demetrius Road. A reminder to drive safely and prioritise the safety of our students who are moving in and around the school. Traffic is fairly chaotic between 3:10 and 3:25pm and then almost non-existent. If you can delay pick up 15 minutes your experience will be far more pleasant.
We have added a new pedestrian crossing at the bus bay that should minimise students walking down the school driveway out to Demetrius Road.
A message from Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong for Catholic Schools Week 2020
Dear students, families and school communities,
Thank you for your school's participation in Catholic Schools Week from 1-7 March. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and showcase many of the fantastic things happening in your school every day, and in all our Catholic schools across the Diocese of Wollongong.
We thank you for working together in partnership with us to help make your school community such a vibrant, nurturing place of learning, faith, belonging and hope.
If you or a family member or friend would like to enrol your child in one of our schools, please download an enrolment package here.
Have a look at our Catholic Schools Week video below, celebrating what our students across the diocese love about their Catholic school. Can you spot the students from your school?
NAPLAN Practice Test- Years 7 & 9
NESA requires all schools participating in NAPLAN Online in 2020 to participate in the NAPLAN practice tests.
Participation in the practice tests is highly beneficial for schools and students in their preparation for NAPLAN in May, as it allows schools and students to become familiar with the online assessment platform and processes.
The practice tests will include an omnibus test (combination of reading, conventions of language and numeracy questions) and a writing test, both approximately 40 minutes in length. All students in Years 7 and 9 are expected to complete both tests.
The Practice test at John Therry will be held on Monday, 23rd March 2020. All Year 7 & 9 students are expected to be present on the day.
More details to follow.
