Catholic Club Communion Mass
Thank you to Vivienne, Alyssa, Allyssa and Isabella who represented John Therry at the Campbelltown Catholic Club Mass on Sunday 30th July. This was celebrated by Bishop Brian Mascord, Fr Ho and Fr Richard at St John's Parish Campbelltown, and attended by all of the Catholic Schools in the Macarthur region.
It is always nice to connect with our wider Catholic community. We remember that we are part of something much bigger than our own school community, and share a commitment to living out Jesus' teaching and our Gospel values.
Wellbeing dog
We announced at our Assembly last week that we look forward to welcoming a wellbeing dog into our school community through Dogs Connect. Our puppy has just been born by mum 'Frankie' and the photos above show mum and the litter of pups.
The breed of dog is a Cobber Dog who are specifically chosen for their temperament and non allergenic properties, making them ideal family and wellbeing dogs for communities.
Wellbeing dogs provide a range of benefits to the school community and the focus is on broad scale connectedness and wellbeing across the entire community. A team of staff are undertaking some significant training at the moment to ensure we meet all relevant guidelines and legislation on having animals in school communities. This includes the processes to ensure any students who might have phobias of dogs feel safe and are aware of how the wellbeing dog interacts with the community. Any student uncomfortable will not be required to be involved with our wellbeing dog.
There is a wealth of information available at https://dogsconnect.net.au and we will continue to provide updates in the coming months as we look to begin welcoming our pup to school next term.
Music performance night
A huge thankyou to our Music staff and Creative and Performing Arts Department for organising our Music Performance night on Thursday 27th July. It is always wonderful to see students so excited to perform and the buzz after coming off stage. This is something they will remember forever and these opportunties are so important.
The performances were wonderful and I never cease to be amazed at the wonderful gifts and talents of our students. We wish our Year 12 students the very best of luck with upcoming HSC performances and are so proud of all who had the courage to get up on stage and share their musical talents.
It’s been a busy start to term 3 for Stage 6 Biology.
In Week 2, year 12 Biology students attended the Museum of Human Disease at the University of NSW. The students attended two lectures on infectious and non-infectious diseases, then moved into the museum to explore the specimens and complete a case study.
Year 12 were also given a taste of university life, as the opportunity to walk around the university and have lunch in the food court.
During Week 3, Year 11 Biology students visited the Mt Annan Botanical Gardens. Students participated in 3 activities where students studied the adaptations of eucalyptus trees, evidence of evolution of the platypus, and adaptations of animals.
The activities involved the students walking through a patch of eucalypt forest, viewing real fossils and petting a snake!

JTCC SPORT UPDATE - TERM 3 WEEK 3
Our MISA Competition has come to an end for another term. This term John Therry performed extremely well and we were able to take home FOUR premierships. This is a fantastic effort and our students should be proud of their efforts shown throughout the term. Congratulations to the following teams who have won a Term 2 Premiership. These students and teams will be acknowledged at our next School Assembly.
Term 2 MISA Premiers:
- 7-9 Boys Basketball - Mr Cook
- 10-12 Girls Indoor Cricket - Mr Geribo
- U/16s Girls Rugby League - Mr Tran
- 10-12 Boys Rugby League - Mr McGrath & Mr Fifita.
This Term our U15s Rugby League Boys Team will compete in a 3 game State of Origin series against Mt Carmel. Students will play games in Week 3,5 and 7 and spend the other weeks of the season in a Training Camp scenario. Our coaches Mr Tran and McGrath will be spending this time developing their key skills and will be a good opportunity to develop some cohesion and teamwork.

These young gentlemen make for a great team and between them, they got the job done with ease. MCCC put in a fair batting effort, but our bowlers kept them to just 55. Our feilding let us down at times, but the boys supported one another and kept their heads up. At no time did their team spirit wane. Our batting was outstanding. Newcomers to the sport were encouraged from the sidelines and made a great start to the innings. The rest of the team carried on skillfully, comfortably surpassing MCCC’s total. |
AFL 10-12 Boys Geribo |
89-15 |
Coby Hilton |
Business as usual for the senior JT boys, with a dominant display of AFL against MCCC. A relentless midfield consisting of Darcy, Brendan, Coby and Ethan won possession easily and gave simple looks at the goal for our forwards. Our forwards were ruthless in attack and nailed most of their opportunities scoring 89 points. Goal scorers consisted of Angus (4), Riley (2), Diego, Brendan, Ethan (1) and Denniss (5). Special mention to our defenders Miguel, Ben and Lucas for only allowing 15 points while being a man down. JT take out the Webb Cup once again. |
AFL 10-12 Girls Neaves |
36-8 |
Jorja Borg |
The first round of MISA and the first time playing AFL for many of the girls in the team, didn’t see us come away with the win, yet the girls still put in a solid effort and were competitive all game. It didn’t help that we unfortunately had to play short but this had no impact on our defence. The girls’ defence was the highlight of the game, gaining possession from many strong defensive performances by all our girls. We have plenty of positives to take away from the game and some key things to work on moving forward. Great effort girls! |
Soccer 9-10 Boys Cook |
Lost 2 - 0 |
Cohan Timmer |
Round 1 vs St Benedicts showed some teething issues with the 9/10 MISA Boys Soccer team. Our opposition forced the long ball which we turned away, but one time in each half, the bounce of the ball was against us, and SBCC had two scoring opportunities which they converted. JTCC played the more attractive style of football, but were stopped by two unorthodox defenders who bashed, and kicked the ball away on numerous occasions. There was some great combination play across all areas of the park, but we failed to convert our opportunities on goal, especially in the second half. Player of the Match - Cohan Timmer for excellent effort in BPO and great involvement in combination play. |
Soccer 7-8 Boys Williamson |
Lost 4-3 |
Lucas Failla |
Came up against a tough opposition for a Round 1 game. The boys did well to keep getting back into the game with goals from Floilan Magalona and two from Cooper Marshall. A few lapses through the defensive line and some lucky ricochets led to their faster forward line being able to score quite easily. Further games together will lead to improvements in what promises to be an exciting and competitive season. |
Soccer 7-9 Girls Joy |
Draw 0-0 |
Ava Abi-Khattar |
First round of MISA Soccer for the John Therry girls ended in a goalless stalemate. The scoreline did not however reflect the quality and sheer dominance of our team in the match. Throughout the match, the girls were creating great chances with some clear goal-scoring opportunities, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to convert them despite totalling around 6 shots in front of goal. Some really creative work in midfield with newly emerging talent Matilda Lamaro and star players Jorja Hohberg & Alice Stephenson linking up brilliantly time and time again. It was, however, the complete performance of Ava Abi-Khattar who debuted in the CDM position for the first time that really stood out. Ava’s work rate and consistency in both offensive and defensive plays, partnered up with the solidity of the rest of the backline ensured we did not concede any goals and the majority of the game was played in the opposition half. Decent start for the girls as we head into Round 2 hoping to come out with a win next time. |
Netball 9-10 Girls Bulger |

Shanae de Vos |
The Intermediate Netball was faced with a player shortage for our first game, thank you to Mia Leech-Morrison who was willing to come along at late notice so we could fill our team. Mia played exceptionally well given she had not trained with us, thank you Mia. It took a while for us to warm up and find a combination on the court that worked against St Pats but our persistence paid off in the end. Entering the 4th quarter the score was 30-6, we managed to win the fourth quarter 8-5, I am confident it will be a much closer game the next time we face St Pats with our full team. I was proud of the JT girls, their effort was sustained no matter the score, they accepted any position on the court they were given. I was impressed by the diverse level of skills each player has. It is not easy to adapt to a position you are not familiar with, but each player did so competently. Well done Team, I am looking forward to the term ahead. A special mention to Hannah Epple who attended MISA Netball today and supported us as an umpire, a very challenging task with which Hannah did with great confidence and competence, thank you Hannah. |

The first round of MISA Netball today saw the girls learning to play efficiently as a team, and working out each other's strengths and plays on the court. The first quarter started strong in the defensive end keeping St Pats out, however the remainder of the game saw JT quickly be defeated. The few times JT were able to successfully get the ball in the goal circle, Emma successfully made a shot. I look forward to the girls working together as a team next week! |

What a match! These boys were put into bat first and came out swinging. The run rate slowed when adrenalin got the better of our batters and MAC converted their chances in the field. Again, our boys kept their spirits up and continued to support each other throughout the innings. They steadied the run rate and came back to set a modest total of 62. MAC came out confident, but our bowlers made the ball sing. JTCC were great in the field this week. Catches, run outs, boundaries stopped - the positive energy in the field was palpable. MAC batters pushed on, narrowing our lead to just 11 runs with one over to go. Needing just two runs off the final ball to tie the game, our bowlers were under pressure. A great ball accompanied by magic in the field resulted in a runout and a nail-biting win for our JTCC team!! Outstanding effort boys…WHAT A GAME!! |
AFL 10-12 Boys Geribo |
WON 67-6 |
Riley Oitmann |
On a warm Tuesday afternoon, the senior JT boys travelled to Camden to seal a convincing victory against WAC. From the get go, Brendan, Riley, Ethan and Darcy were ruthless in the middle and consistently found our forwards who capitalised on every opportunity. Our backline of Ben, Miguel, Lucas, Preston and Marshall were very strong again this week, only allowing one goal. Goal scorers this week consisted of Riley (3), Angus, Diego, Beau (1) and Denniss (5). Final Score 11.1 (67) - 1.0 (6) |
AFL 10-12 Girls Neaves |

Alexis Paulo |
Another extremely strong defensive game by our girls. Our midfielders and defenders were outstanding in their tackling and pressure on the ball. Even though we unfortunately didn’t walk away with the win, the score line could have been far worse with the lack of possession we had. Moving forward, continuing to work on our attack is a goal for the girls and once we improve our attack I believe a win will definitely come our way. |
Soccer 9-10 Boys Cook |
LOSS 2-1 |
Norman Hachem |
9/10 Boys MISA Football -The boys were keen for a positive start after a disappointing loss last week. We started well with some attacking combinations and Jaidon Cosmidis was able to head a ball into the goal off a free kick. We went into the break with the one nil lead but handling the Thomas Hassell team was a handful. Some poor behaviour and arrogant behaviour was causing disruptive play and the JT boys failed to keep their heads clear of the mess. We contested a ball at the defensive third and poor positional play led to a THAC shot on goal and the game was levelled up. More disorganised play a few minutes later saw a ball fail to get cleared from the goal area, which resulted in Man of the Match Norman Hachem securing the ball, but a penalty was given. THAC executed and took a 2 nil lead with 10 minutes to play. Poor sportsmanship and time wasting dominated the final minutes of play which dissolved our chances going forwards. Some dominant goalkeeper plays earned Norman Hachem player of the match honours for his goal line saves, clearances and distribution out from the back. Magdalene next week with a depleted line-up due to Year 10 camp. The odds are stacked against us, but the boys are looking forward to the contest. Mr Cook |
Soccer 7-8 Boys Williamson |
LOSS 2-0 |
Ben Keers |
Despite having numerous chances to score, we suffered a narrow loss again today. By my count, we had two headed opportunities from close range, 3 one on one chances, one of which hit the post, a long range drive that would have beat the keeper if it went either side of him and one clearance off their line. Perhaps it was this knowledge, that they were lucky to be in the lead, that led to some of the most unsportsmanlike behaviour seen on a MISA sports field. The language, time wasting, poor challenges and abuse directed towards our players was very disappointing. Well done to our boys for not engaging for the most part, despite justified frustration. |
Soccer 7-9 Girls Joy |
WON 2-0 |
Alice Stephenson |
A brilliant display of relentless work rate and drive on the pitch by the JT girls today as we finished our second round game with a 2-0 victory over Thomas Hassall Anglican College. The game seemed against our favour from the get-go with some fantastic attacking displays from our opposition with two girls in particular running the show. It was evident that their dominance in the first half was getting to our team, with frustrations leading to desperate clearances, unrealistic long range efforts and some good opportunities being squandered. Despite their best efforts, we managed to finish the first half without conceding a goal thanks to some heroic saves from goalkeeper and captain Darcie Bennett. The girls went into the second half with an improved mentality and composed approach which saw some creative chances slowly begin to blossom. The game continued intensely back and forth with some vital defending from both sides until we won a free kick right outside their box. Alice Stephenson who previously scored a screamer of a free kick in the Bill Turner Cup, stepped up and made it two for two with an astounding finish. This goal really elevated team spirit with the girls pushing harder and pressing tighter which eventually led to a mistake from their keeper, allowing Jorja Hohberg to tap in a brilliant cross from Bella Ribicic. The final whistle was blown promptly after and the JT girls continue what is an exciting start to the MISA Soccer season. |

The Tri-series kicked off against a tough Mount Carmel side at Eschol Park. Mitch Lane (Captain) and Chayse Davies (Vice-Captain) led the way for the U15’s team with stout defence and exceptional control in attack. Overall the team had a solid start, however there are numerous improvements that must be made before the next game. Lapses in defence were fortunately not capitalised on by Mount Carmel, which was fortunate for the JT boys. MVP: Benji Velin |

A beautiful sunny game today saw the girls tested by the rare winter sun. With no reserves to replenish the team, the girls played their very best, and at times had equal scores with Broughton. The goal end tried some new tactics that allowed JT to make a comeback after the first half. However right at the end they scored a few too many which resulted in a loss. |
Students have been enjoying their 7-10 Rec Sport Options and staff have complimented students on their positive attitude and effort during sport time.
Another reminder of the expectations during sport;
- Students are expected to behave appropriately and show respect to their classmates and teachers during sport.
- Students are expected to participate in sporting activities unless they have a note from a parent/guardians stating others.
- Students who are injured and have a note from a parent/guardian are able to complete homework/assessments during Sport time (Sports Detention/Injury)
- Students ARE NOT permitted to have food or drinks on our sport buses. We have had too many students leaving rubbish on the buses.

DIOCESAN ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
On a cold morning in July, John Therry sent 56 students to represent the college at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. On top of this, we also had 30 Year 9 and 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies students assist in the smooth running of a busy athletics carnival. These PASS helpers should be congratulated for their hard work and enthusiasm, without them the carnival does not run. As usual, the behaviour on display at these Diocesan Carnivals was terrific, I could not fault our students with the way they behaved and encouraged one another throughout the day.
John Therry collected a total of eleven 1st place results throughout the day. We also collected several 2nd and 3rd place results in what is always a tough and competitive carnival. Overall John Therry finished in 7th place, just beating Mt Carmel in a tight competition. Strong participation in these events is integral to the success of the carnival.
We had some stand out performances from the Carnival with the students who finished in 1st Place acknowledged in the table below. These students have now earned selection to represent Wollongong at the NSWCCC Athletics Carnival later in the term.
A special mention must go to the Hilton Siblings who were crowned Diocesan Age Champions for their respective ages. Both Ava and Coby participated in 6 events throughout the day and placed extremely well in all of these to earn themselves age champion. This is a fantastic achievement and highlights their determination and excellent athleticism. Well Done Ava and Coby.
2023 AUSTRALIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two of JTCC’s finest recently competed at the 2023 Championships in Redcliffe. A huge shout out to Tess McEvoy-King and Afi Fauese.
In what was a rain affected competition, the two girls ripped in for NSWCCC as they battled it out for a semi final berth and a possible Australian jersey.
Results:
Round 1 - CCC defeated Victoria 9 -8
Round 2 - CCC defeated ACT 17 - 4
Round 3 - CCC defeated CHS 8 - 5
Round 4 - CHS defeated CCC 5 - 4
Round 5 - CCC defeated ACT 17 - 4
Round 6 - CCC defeated Victoria 13 - 4
CCC topped the pool with CHS (but placed 2nd on +/-) and faced up against QRL, where they were unfortunately eliminated. NSWCHS went on to defeated QRL in the final.
Congratulations to Tess and Afi on your selection into the CCC team and for the way you have represented yourself, your family and JTCC at such a high level of women’s rugby league.
JTCC ANNUAL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - VERSION 2
Please find attached a completed version of the JTCC Annual Athletics Carnival report.
The John Therry community participated in the College’s annual athletics carnival on Friday 9th June. To say it was fresh in the morning was an understatement, as the synthetic grass and the field were covered in frost.
Year 12 were keen to rip into their last carnival of their high school journey as they arrived in fancy dress. Participation was high in some Year Groups, but some Year Groups will need to improve their attendance in 2024 events. Valuable points were earned which boosted House totals but the most influencing factor was that of attendance. Some Houses were strong in numbers and as such turned that into valuable participation points.
Well done to Ryan and Murray houses for their attendance and to all students that were in attendance, they are to be congratulated on their efforts throughout the day as well as their behaviour, with venue staff handing our compliments for student behaviour.
The day started off with the 200m/800m events for the serious competitors with Darcy Wilson breaking the first record of the day.
Students moved to their first rotations, we were to witness to more awesome displays of student athleticism as several more records were broken.

WOLLONGONG DIOCESAN NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Intermediate Girls Netball - Ms Wagstaff
MVP: Georgia Bastock / Annelise Hall
In a highly competitive matchup at the Berkeley tournament on Friday, 16th June, the Intermediate Dioesian netball team showcased their remarkable skill and unwavering determination. Competing against strong opposition in Division 1, they finished 7th out of 9 teams, but their performance was outstanding.
The Dioesian shooters showcased their exceptional skills throughout the tournament, consistently delivering accurate shots and asserting their presence in the ring. Leading the charge was Georgia Bastock, whose remarkable ability to move around the ring and position herself effectively proved crucial in securing valuable points against top-ranked teams. Additionally, Elyse Stonebridge and Eliza Dacich displayed impressive shooting skills, consistently hitting their mark and exerting their influence in the ring. Their accuracy and presence were key factors in Dioesian's success throughout the tournament.
The team's success extended beyond the shooting circle, as notable performances in centre court played a crucial role. Chloe Donovan stood out with her impressive intercepts, disrupting the opposition's attacks and creating turnovers. Shanae de Vos emerged as a key player, facilitating a smooth flow of play and connecting with the shooters. Ava Hilton showcased excellent skills in feeding the ball to the shooters, utilising precise passes and astute decision-making. Together, their contributions in centre court were instrumental.
Hannah Epple played a pivotal role as the team's key Wing Defence player. Her tenacity and defensive prowess disrupted the opposition's attacking plays, making it difficult for their opponents. Unfortunately, Amelia Smith, a valuable member of the centre court, suffered an injury during the game. Despite her absence, her contributions up until that point were noteworthy. Amelia's presence and skills in the centre court were missed, as she played a vital role in supporting the team's overall strategy and maintaining control of the game.
Annelise Hall and Tahlia Sutton formed an outstanding defensive duo, working cohesively to block shots and contain opposing shooters. Their coordination, communication, and well-timed blocks frustrated their opponents, limiting scoring opportunities and thwarting attacking plays. Annelise and Tahlia's combined efforts ensured a strong defensive presence throughout the tournament.
Despite finishing 7th overall in Division 1, the Dioesian netball team demonstrated their potential and competitive spirit. Their victories against top-ranked teams speak to their ability to rise to the occasion and compete against tough competition.
Junior Girls Netball - Ms Durrington
MVP: Sienna Larner and Sienna Marelic
In an impressive display of teamwork and sportsmanship, our year 7 and 8 girls netball team secured a well deserved third place overall. Throughout the carnival they showcased their skills on the court. Despite facing experienced opponents and encountering some challenges along the way, they proved to be a formidable force. Their unwavering commitment to supporting one another and their excellent sportsmanship shone through. It is evident that their hard work paid off with their remarkable achievement of receiving third place over the day. Sienna Larner and Sienna Marelic were the MVPs of the day highlighting their passion for their team and sport.
Results: Overall the girls came third on the day.
