ADVENT – CONNECTING TO JESUS
In the Church’s year we have just had our final week and we welcome in the New Liturgical Year. The final Sunday in the Church’s year is the Feast of Christ the King, which was celebrated last weekend.
So this weekend we move into the four weeks of Advent where one of the five Advent candles is lit each week and we light the first Advent candle.
Advent means 'Coming' in Latin. This is the coming of Jesus into the world. Christians use the four Sundays and weeks of Advent to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas.
1st Advent Candle – (purple) THE PROPHECY CANDLE or CANDLE OF HOPE
As Christians we are people of hope. We can have hope in our lives because God is faithful and will keep the promises he has made to us. So our hope is centred in our belief in God.
The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming,” which is a translation of the Greek word parousia. Scholars believe that during the 4th and 5th centuries in Spain and Gaul, Advent was a season of preparation for the baptism of new Christians at the January feast of Epiphany.
By the 6th century, however, Roman Christians had tied Advent to the coming of Christ. But the “coming” they had in mind was not Christ’s first coming in the manger in Bethlehem, but his second coming in the clouds as the judge of the world. It was not until the Middle Ages that the Advent season was explicitly linked to Christ’s first coming at Christmas.
“And again, Isaiah says, ‘The root of Jesse will spring up one who will arise to rule over the nations; the gentiles will hope in him. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”. (Romans 15:12 -13)
I urge all families to seek to understand this special time of our Christian calendar and attend your local Church services.
John Therry welcomes the news that Mr Peter Hill has been appointed by Bishop Brian as the new Director of Schools. The letter below outlines the history and development of Mr Hill.
As a community, we also wish to acknowledge the significant work that Mr Turner has undertaken in the Diocese of Wollongong as it enters its significant expansion stage. His leadership and strategic thinking has enabled us to move forward with a definite plan for success and growth in the future.

MARIST RETREAT GATHERING WITH YEAR 12 LEADERS
From Sunday 24th to Tuesday the 26th, three Year 12, 2020 leaders had the privilege of joining 22 Marist schools over NSW at a retreat held at The Hermitage in Mittagong.
Luke Kotsou, Hollie Cunningham and Jessica Soh were able to engage in the experience of a life time meeting other aspiring leaders across NSW. Over the three days the students were involved in a number of leadership activites that focused on the Marist values - Love of work, Simplicity and In the Way of Mary.
On Monday night we had the pleasure of having a formal dinner with Mr Marshall and other Principals from each Marist School. This gave the students the opportunity to meet and engage with successful leaders and listen to a number of motivational leadership qualities.
The students were delighted with the experience and were able to discover the leadership style they wish to insitil in their journey throughout 2020. We wish all the year 12 leaders for 2020 the best of luck in guiding and inspiring the John Therry Catholic College Cohort over the next year.
On Wednesday night the 13th of November the graduating class of 2019, along with their families were able to share in a spectacular night.
The Year 12 formal was held at Campbelltown Catholic Club in the Cube. Throughout the night the graduating class of 2019 celebrated their final time as a cohort enjoying a delicious dinner and a night of dancing.
SPORT REPORT TERM 4 - Week 7 (Replay Round 4)
The past two weeks have seen sweltering temperatures causing a number of sport cancellations. This week with temperatures again predicted to be high, we were instead hit with a 20 minute storm, receiving 3mm of rain as students boarded buses to their respective sports. The storm unfortunately meant that a number of games were unplayable and our students particularly our year 7's were stuck at school again. Unfortunately, the one thing we cannot control is the weather, and the safety of the students and staff is always paramount.
Of the five games we were able to play we were victorious in all. Final week of sport for the year next week, sports assembly to follow in week 9 (more details below).

A difficult game with the wind but a match we should have won more easily. Never really in danger. Gave away an early lead and poor execution in the second set led to them drawing level. Regained composure in the third. MVP: Lachlan Coombs |
Sports Assembly News
This week Natalie Van Coevorden (class of 2010), has agreed to attend the sport assembly as our guest speaker. We are very excited to welcome back Natalie as she has a very busy schedule preparing and training in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games trials. Our sport captain Olivia Southby will be in charge of preparing and asking Natalie some questions as part of the assembly. A reminder that parents are welcome to attend. Of course the sport assembly is one of my favourite days on the school calendar.
