The Year 8 Pastoral Day was held on Wednesday the 4th of September. We had presenters come from NET Ministries. These were young people from a Catholic organisation that came to our school to teach us about Jesus. They were interesting and they told us about their faith. One presenter did not believe in God until he came to a youth group and he started believing the teachings of Jesus. In the first session we listened to the presenters tell their stories of their faith journey.
We also did activities which included writing down five things you like about your friend. This activity helped us to give back positive things to our mates. In the second session we did a guided meditation. This was peaceful and relaxing and helped us to find inner peace. In the last session we went to the park and played “Hunger Games” and had a lot of fun with our year group and the teachers. This was a good day because it was relaxing and fun.

On the 20th of September, 50 Year 11 Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation students celebrated the completion of their preliminary course with an outdoor education incursion. The students were treated to an 8m rock climbing wall and a combat archery arena where students could shoot and dodge rubber arrows. The students were split up into their classes and competed against the other SLR classes, as always these were competitive and enjoyable for all.
The students represented John Therry extremely well, which highlights their growth as young adults. SLR exists as a Year 11 and Year 12 subject for students who have shown interest in PDHPE during Years 7-10 and are looking to develop lifelong healthy habits through sport and physical activity. A big thank you to Mr Goodhew who organised a successful day. Thanks Year 11, Mr Bodeker, Mr Goodhew and Mr Webb
Pull up your socks this Socktober to help our students walk in the shoes of others!
On Tuesday the 29th of October, John Therry staff and students are invited to wear a fun pair of socks to school with a gold coin donation. These could include happy socks or sports socks. This fundraiser is to raise money for students going to ACYF Perth and on the Vanuatu Immersion. Our students are working hard to help support Catholic communities in need. Your support is greatly appreciated!

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR OCTOBER: MANAGING ANXIETY DURING EXAMS
If you are someone who freezes or has a mental blank during an exam or is overly anxious you may find that the heightened anxiety is reducing your ability to recall.
Remember that being as prepared as possible and not leaving your study until the last minute can make a big difference in reducing anxiety. Start your study early and make a plan so that you have time to study what you need to without stress. It is also important to note that the more practice tests you do, the more familiar you are with the test so it will be less intimidating and you will be used to working under time limits.
When you are in the exam if you feel anxious, a good strategy is to close your eyes for a moment and take some long, deep breaths. When you open your eyes do some of the questions you find easy or feel confident about. Meanwhile your subconscious will have a chance to recall the things you are struggling to remember. Another trick is try moving your eyes to different directions, ie looking up and to the left etc. This can also sometimes prompt recall.
You could also seek help from a counsellor for techniques on how to manage stress. You can also visit the MANAGING STRESS unit for more strategies.
