Feast Day of St Mother Teresa of Calcutta - Friday 5th September
I heard a priest speak about Mother Teresa today and he said that Mother Teresa, reminded us that not all poverty is being hungry, naked, and homeless. “One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty." There are so many in our communities who feel this sense of loneliness and isolation, particularly our elderly. For those of us with strong friendship and family connections, these are truly riches that no money can buy! We would always hope that the John Therry community provides this support and connection for our students, and the importance of good relationship is one of the great gifts at the heart of our faith. I regularly say to students that there is nothing more important than the way they treat others, and that people will always remember how you treat them.
May we all look to Mother Teresa for inspiration today and, following the example of Jesus, aim to be a person of love and friendship to those we encounter.
P & F Meeting - Tuesday 9th September 2025
We invite our parents and carers to join us for the P & F meeting on Tuesday night commencing at 6:30pm in the staff common room. We have a guest presentation from our catholic care counsellors on Understanding and managing anxiety and Talking about mental health. We will also provide an update on the Master Plan and look forward to any feedback and suggestions that parents may have. We hope to see you there.
Attendance Update
57% attendance level means that 625 of our 1092 students have an attendance rate of over 90%.
On average, student attendance sits at 88%. Our goal is 90% in 2025 and we are hoping that after the flu season comes to a close, we will get back closer to 90% to finish the year. This still means the average student is missing 4 weeks of school per year which is a significant amount of learning time lost, and we will aim to continually improve.
It was a pleasure to attend the Creative Arts HSC Showcase this week. I am always amazed and inspired by the gifts and talents of our students, and the enormous time and effort they put into their major works. This is always so well supported by their teachers and I am forever grateful, as I know the students and families are, for their time and commitment to supporting students through this process. The sense of pride that comes with doing something so difficult and challenging is a great life lesson, and I congratulate each and every student on this achievement.
I thank all of the fathers, grand fathers, family and friends that attended our fathers day breakfast this morning. It was a beautiful morning and lovely to gather as a community and acknowledge the important roles that our Dad's play. We will have some photos to follow in our next newsletter. We keep in our hearts those no longer with us and give thanks for the time that we were lucky to share. Wishing all of our Fathers, and those in fatherly roles, a very happy fathers day on Sunday.
VALE GREG WHITBY, FORMER DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS IN THE DIOCESE OF WOLLONGONG
John Therry joins the Catholic education sector in remembering Greg Whitby, who sadly passed away over the weekend. Greg was a foundation staff member at John Therry as English and HSIE Coordinator, and his children attended John Therry in later years.
For close to 50 years—including a period as Director of Schools in the Diocese of Wollongong (1999 to 2006)—Greg devoted his life to Catholic education. He left a profound impact on those he worked alongside and will be remembered as a leader committed to innovation, inclusion, and the faith, learning, and wellbeing of the communities he served.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Greg will be celebrated by Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, on Monday 8 September 2025 at 10.00 am.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of respect and the high regard in which Greg is held. As you can appreciate, the funeral is expected to be very well attended. Please be mindful that there are many family members and close friends who would like to pay their respects, and for that reason, there is the opportunity for those who wish to pay their respects to join via a livestream of the service at https://www.youtube.com/@
Please keep Greg and his family in your prayers during this very challenging time.
Eternal rest grant unto Greg, O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
Bishop Vincent Long of the Diocese of Parramatta has shared a moving tribute to Greg in Catholic Outlook.

Classic Novel Finds Itself in Court!
With the strike of a gavel, the Year 11 Advanced English classroom transformed into a fiery courtroom infused with anticipation. To celebrate Book Week, the class held a mock trial on the text we’ve been studying this term: the widely controversial ‘Heart of Darkness’ by Joseph Conrad, debating whether the novella holds literary value in modern society.
We were divided into groups of prosecution and defence, each ready to argue our cases with precision and passion. Witnesses stepped into the shoes of characters from the novella, the author himself, renowned critics, and even modern-day student perspectives, adding weight, viewpoints and authenticity to the proceedings. An impartial jury took detailed notes, scrutinising the courtroom with incisive questions and comments that kept both sides on their toes, before arriving at a measured verdict.
The Mock Trial was a deeply captivating activity that led the class to share insights and communicate our opinions and knowledge of the novella, working collaboratively to discuss and evaluate the text in terms of its stance in today’s society. It was a wonderful opportunity to put our critical thinking skills into action, and we are grateful to Mr Miszczyszyn and Ms Eljed for organising the activity and giving us an opportunity to engage with the novel in such a unique and memorable way. Ultimately, the trial stands as a reminder that the true power of literature lies not in unanimous agreement and validation, but in the conversations it sparks and the perspectives it challenges.

VET STUDENTS SHINE IN HOSPITALITY & CONSTRUCTION
Our VET students have had a very busy and productive few weeks, putting their skills into practice and gaining valuable hands-on experience.
In Hospitality, students have been working hard running the Marista Café, serving up a delicious variety of dishes including chicken tacos, pasta, grazing boxes, and freshly made churros. They have had the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills, teamwork, and customer service while managing the demands of a real café environment. The feedback from staff and students has been fantastic, with everyone impressed by the quality and presentation of the food.

Meanwhile, our Construction students have successfully completed their brick and block assessments, learning the practical techniques and finer details involved in laying bricks and constructing solid structures. This hands-on experience has helped students develop their confidence and technical abilities while preparing them for future opportunities in the building and construction industry.
We are incredibly proud of our VET students for their dedication, effort, and enthusiasm. These practical learning experiences are invaluable in helping them gain real-world skills and setting them up for success in their chosen pathways."

The Victor Chang School Science awards were established in 2004 to celebrate gifted students and encourage an interest in science and the scientific fields post High School.
On Thursday 28th August, two of our amazing year 11 students received the prestigious Victor Chang award in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the Campbelltown Art Gallery attended by Mayor Darcy Lound, Mrs Teresa Harris and Dr Emma Rath of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
Both Anabel Martin (studying chemistry, biology and advanced mathematics) and Metta Keen (studying chemistry, biology and advanced mathematics) were both nominated for the outstanding contributions to science at John Therry Catholic College. We congratulate our two dedicated students and thank their teachers and parents for their ongoing support of these students.
JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 3, Week 7
Spring has sprung! It’s wonderful to see the warmer weather arriving and our students making the most of the opportunities this season brings. We are proud of our helpers who supported the Picton Soccer Gala Day, and congratulate the students who performed strongly at the recent Diocese Athletics Carnival. Best of luck to those who have now qualified for the NSWCCC Athletics Championships! We also acknowledge our Boys and Girls Open Volleyball teams who gave their best efforts at the DIO Volleyball Championships, despite results not going their way.
9/10 Rotations update - Activity change
Unfortunately, Maximum Skating is closing it's doors, so replacement activities have been arranged for the rest of the school year. Skating will be substituted by walking and tennis. Please see the updated program options attached.
Important - After that date, from Week 6-8:
- Group B → Tennis
- Group D → Walking
Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. This will impact remaining rotations for Term 3 & 4.
It has come to our attention that a number of students are presenting to Sports Detention with notes from home claiming illness or injury. Unfortunately, some of these notes have proven to be forged or falsified. This is a serious matter.
Students who regularly submit notes to avoid participation may be required to provide a doctor’s certificate to support their claim. Any student found submitting false or misleading notes will face further consequences. .Furthermore, students who repeatedly attend Sports Detention may be escalated to an afternoon detention. We expect honesty, integrity, and active participation in all aspects of school life, including Sport.

The JT boys won the toss and elected to bowl first. We had a really strong start and Magdalene steadied the ship in their middle order. We took some sharp chances in the field and kept them to a competitive total of 64. In our batting innings, the partnerships were really consistent and gave us a good opportunity to win at the back end of the game. We needed five runs off three balls to win and finished tied with Magdalene on 64 runs. |

The 10–12 Boys AFL team recorded an impressive 59–18 win over Magdalene, showing strong teamwork and skill across the ground. The backline was rock solid with Gervayse Smith leading the way through his intercept work and composure under pressure, while Jordan Truckle dominated the midfield with his strength around the contest and drive forward. Up front, Noah Donovan was outstanding, kicking key goals and creating constant opportunities in attack. It was a complete team performance and a well-deserved victory. |

Our side went down 22–12 in what was a tough contest. We started poorly, struggling with our player ratios and organisation around the field, which saw the opposition take control early. Despite this, the team showed great resilience in the second half. We regrouped, lifted our intensity, and responded strongly with two sixes to close out the match. While there is plenty to work on, especially around structure and positioning, the comeback showed the team’s spirit and determination moving forward. |

The JT girls were in close competition with Broughton throughout the entire game. After being down they made a comeback in the second quarter and were equal in the third. Unfortunately Broughton overtook JT in the last quarter resulting in a 16-11 loss. The girls showed great teamwork and sportsmanship with many students offering to sub off or play out of position to ensure that others got game time. It was a great effort by all team members especially in today’s warmer weather. |

The 7 /8 Division Two girls played a challenging game against Wollondilly this week. Although the girls lost 28-7, their spirits were high throughout the whole match. The Year 9/10 girls team played a challenging match this week, finishing with a score of 35-23. Despite the loss, the team showed great determination, particularly given that there were no reserves available. Every player contributed and gave their best throughout the game. MVP: Nevaeh – for her consistent effort, leadership, and skill on the court. A special mention to all the girls for their perseverance and teamwork. Even in a tough match, they supported each other and continued to push forward until the final whistle. A great day in the sun! |

Our best performance of the season. Good running, strong decision making and great finishing saw us take the lead early and maintain a two goal advantage for most of the game. Well done to Heath, Geon, Phoenix and Bailin. Two dead ball shots from Riley, for two goals. May be a bit late for the finals, but a much improved performance and a good sign of our potential. |

It was great to finally get on the pitch after a few weeks of wet weather. Knowing we needed to win our remaining games to become premiers, the boys were ready for a tough challenge against Mt Carmel. Fortunately we were able to assert our dominance from the start with Levi Fitzpatrick scoring a great individual goal after some classy touches from the midfield. We quickly made it 2-0 with Luka Ribicic finishing off another great team goal to take us into the half time break 2-0. The game was never in danger and the boys controlled the game for the second half and with a few minutes to go Billy Wilson was able to tap in a third for JT. It was a dominant performance from start to finish and there were several standouts from the boys. MVP goes to Clint Kaandorp who was everywhere in midfield today. He was able to stop any Mt Carmel attacks and kick started our counter attack all game. Well done boys. |

Lost 2-0 V MCCC |
A classic match up against our old foes of Mt Carmel. So many quality players on the park from both teams ensured this would be a classic game. Both teams had several chances at goal but were just shy or hit the cross-bar. JT conceded 2 goals in the first half, one from an unmarked backpost header, and the other from a transition error where the striker split our defenders and shot a laser from outside the 18 yard box. JT had 5 shots at goal and missed all and the game was slipping away from us. Some contentious referee calls consolidated the Mt Carmel victory. |

A tough match against MCCC, with MCCC scoring the first two goals in quick succession. JTCC quickly retaliated with some solid goals scored by Ivy and Tamariz with Ivy going on to score a flurry of goals for the team. MCCC had a really dominant player who was cutting through our defense intitally, but in the second half the JT girls worked together to shut her down. It was a tight match up and after MCCC leveling the score the girls were led by Zoe, Matilda and Matilda S. in goalkeeper to step up and work together to get one more goal on the board to clinch victory. The girls gelled really well together under the professional guidance of professional football player and Prac teacher Ms Hawkesby! |

The U15 boys continued their impressive form to remain the only undefeated team in the competition. St Benedicts began strong with great defence and hitups to gain momentum. The John Therry boys were resilient and defiant in defence which allowed for strong momentum in the latter part of the half. Keiran Mostyn was dynamic in attack and opened up the opposing teams defence with strong runs and offloads. Rico Logai-Lusiano was effective in creating space and breaking open the wings for Adrian Haule to streak down the sideline to open the scoring. A great team performance from multiple players which led to a deserving win. |

JT came up against Magdalene in the indoor cricket semi final. After losing the toss and being sent into bat, we had a really slow start and meant we were playing catch up for the rest of our game. We had a good middle order partnership, but couldn’t quite get to a competitive score. Our 10–12 boys AFL team managed a hard-fought 44–24 win over Mt Carmel, even though we were short on players and not at our best. The boys worked hard to cover the ground, and while our ball use and decision-making weren’t as sharp as usual, the team stuck together and kept pushing. Cohan Timmer was a standout through the midfield with his running and determination, while Zeph held strong in the backline, stopping attacks and turning defence into attack. It was a tough effort under the circumstances, and the boys should be proud of finding a way to get the job done despite the challenges. |

Won 2-1 V THAC |
Our match against Thomas Hassall is always a physical contest and with two key players out in Cooper Marshall and Floilan Magalona, the team will have to step up and play well if we are to remain in the top two on the competition ladder. The game played out to plan with some great team combinations that created numerous attacking runs on goal for Cooper Firman and Alex Sanchez. Our defensive efforts led by Lucas Faiila and Davonne Plaatjies, kept the opposition under control. The game was evenly balanced until JT opened the scoring by a great combination from Alex Sanchez. Not too long after, we conceded a cheap goal from an uncontested corner. We started the second half and we scored from a good attacking run, then a deflection from the opposition back line. It got fairly heated after this moment with Thomas Hassall going long with numerous physical hits to our players and goal keeper. Time expired shortly after and JT will still in the mix for a top 2 finish. Final game next week versus 1st place St Benedicts. |

Won 4-2 v THAC |
Another win for our girls once again. This time against our previously washed out fixture opponents Thomas Hassal. A disappointing start running up to the game with only 11 players on the teamsheet and 10 available to play, although this proved not to be too big an issue with the girls all pulling their weight and Raquel Bayon (Year 8) still insisting on playing despite an ankle injury last game. After conceding the first goal of the game to a well taken opportunity, our girls started to find momentum and equalised via a goal from Cristina Alvarado (Year 8). A series of poor decisions and defensive negligence resulted in the opponents capitalising on an easy opportunity to make it 2-1 their way. The girls entered the second half with a lot more passion and having scrapped our wing play to accommodate more midfielders made a huge difference with goalscoring machine Ivy Smith (Year 8), Savannah-May Phommaxay (Year 9) and Scarlett Fisher (Year 8) all linking up with some brilliant total football to create chance after chance. A huge shoutout also goes to unsung heroes Jessica Tring (Year 8) and Matilda Sasse (Year 8) who have been shutting down attacking threats and stopping shots on goal, respectively. The game ended 4-2 our way, highlighting the true resilience and passion to succeed even when the odds seem backed against us. The girls put on a show and displayed great sportsmanship in the process. A fantastic term it's been so far for our 7-9 MISA Soccer Girls. |

With the huge deluge of rain leading up to the carnival, there was apprehension whether it would actually go ahead. There were some light showers across the day, but despite this John Therry once again showcased our athletic talent with a strong team of
competitors at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. The students represented the College with pride, competing across track and field events with determination, skill, and outstanding sportsmanship.
Supporting the team on the day were our Year 9 PASS, Year 10 PDHPE and Year 11 SLR students, who were instrumental in the smooth running of the carnival. Their professionalism, enthusiasm, and willingness to assist drew praise from organisers and staff, and they played a vital role in ensuring the success of the day.
In total, John Therry athletes achieved an impressive twelve 1st place finishes, along with multiple 2nd and 3rd place results across both track and field events. Highlights included dominant performances in the throws by Balin Crews, Elyse Stonebridge and Zoe Hawkes, sprint and middle-distance success from Jaidon Cosmidis and Darby Crews, and standout jumping results from Jackson Schulstad, Noah Donovan. The achievements of our AWD athletes, including Sophia Wragg-Leighton and Dominic Baker who competed in a sling, also added to the College’s strong overall showing.
The following students were among those to secure first place and earn selection for the upcoming NSWCCC Athletics Carnival:
- Jaidon Cosmidis (16 Years) – 200m, 400m, 100m
- Darby Crews (15 Years) – 200m, 400m
- Balin Crews (12 Years) – Discus, Javelin
- Jackson Schulstad (16 Years) – High Jump
- Noah Donovan (15 Years) – High Jump
- Elyse Stonebridge (16 Years) – Discus
- Zoe Hawkes (12 Years) – Javelin
- Geon Joseph (13 years) - 200m
- Heath Cunningham (14 years) - 800m, 1500m
- Bryson Da Silva (15 years) - 800m
Alongside these victories were a host of strong performances from across the team, including podium finishes from our Senior Boys Relay team, Rosita Tumanuvao, Kayden Thompson, Emilie Vellin, Michael Southby, Jordan Truckle, Ava Hilton, Matilda Lamaro, Loxley Dale and Bryson Da Silva each of whom contributed valuable points and added to the College’s presence on the day.
A special mention goes to our Junior Boys Relay team, who ran brilliantly to win their race but were unfortunately disqualified, a reminder of how fine the margins can be in competitive sport! We would also like to recognise Paulina, one of our helpers, who stepped up to run in a relay so we could field a complete team, as well as the junior girls who rallied together to find a team to compete for JT despite having minimal numbers.
Congratulations to all competitors, and good luck to those progressing to the NSWCCC Carnival.

On Wednesday 3rd September, eight enthusiastic John Therry students proudly represented the school at the Diocesan Volleyball Championships, postponed from Term 2. The girls were eager to compete, showing real commitment despite the absence of three key players. Drawn in one of the toughest pools of the day, they faced some of the strongest schools in the competition but never lost their determination or team spirit.
Across the four pool matches, the girls displayed great resilience. The opening game against St. Joseph’s was a slow start, and although they rallied, they were unable to close the gap. Against St. Mary’s, the girls showcased their serving and net play, while their third match against Magdalene was a nail-biter, falling agonisingly short in a 33–32 result after some challenging umpire calls. Their final match against Mt. Carmel - the eventual champions - saw them lift their performance and play their best volleyball of the day.
Standout performances included Georgina and Serafina’s excellent work at the net and Ava’s powerful, consistent serves. While the girls didn’t progress to the finals, their determination, teamwork and competitive spirit were impressive, particularly given that both finalists came from their pool.
Just as importantly, the girls represented John Therry with pride off the court. They embraced the responsibility of refereeing duties, with Serafina and Georgina in particular excelling in this role. Their sportsmanship, cooperation and enthusiasm throughout the day were a credit to themselves and the school.
Congratulations to all team members for their effort and commitment - you were wonderful ambassadors for John Therry.

Report
Initially scheduled for Term 2 before a blackout interrupted proceedings, this day was much anticipated. The trip to Unanderra was somewhat delayed by the late arrival of several students, but we did arrive just in time and ready for our first game. Thankfully the boys showed composure and the whole team made it in the end.
Our four pool games were largely comfortable wins, with an overall doubling of points won compared to points lost. A final tally of 111 points won to 55 points lost. All players played a role with strong skill execution, good decision making and solid teamwork.
Unfortunately, our player rotation system led to us being understrength and overwhelmed at the start of the semi-final. A point difference we looked likely to recover from until an untimely and inappropriate time-out call swung the momentum. This put us into a play-off for third place.
It was disappointing to miss a deserved opportunity to play in the final but a convincing play-off performance led to us gaining a credible third place. The boys are to be congratulated for their camaraderie, participation and continued effort. A pity we couldn’t bring the trophy home again but there is always next year.
Picton Soccer Gala Day
We had a huge number of students helping for the Diocese Primary Soccer Gala Day. We received such positive feedback from the teacher in charge on the day and the CeDOW sport staff .
This is a significant event that benefits many primary schools and students across our local community. It simply wouldn’t be possible to run such an inclusive day, involving so many students, without our students' generous support and willingness to give up their time.

Every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, including this Friday, the 5th of Sep, from 7pm to 9pm, at OLHC (Martha Room, Rosemeadow) we will be hosting Teens Ministry Night for high school students.
Each evening is filled with faith, fellowship, prayer, games, fun, and food — with dinner included! It’s a fantastic opportunity for our young people to build friendships, share in community, and grow deeper in their faith.
As space in the Martha Room is limited, we ask that all parents register their child using the QR code. If numbers exceed capacity, the event will be moved to the Primary School Hall and parents will be notified.
All high school-age kids are welcome
