What are we on about at John Therry?
As a Catholic School in the Marist tradition, the fourviere pledge that Marcellin Champagnat made many years ago nicely summarises our approach to education at John Therry. There is a lovely connection with the Marist and Parish devotion to Mary, and I share a few excerpts from the Fourviere pledge below.
"We want to be people who bring love to life. We seek to heal, to educate, and to accompany people to discover fullness of life."
"Our Marian way is to go joyfully and generously, looking to form life-giving relationships with people, that stir the liberating spirit within them, so they too can become instruments of God's faithfullness, justice and mercy."
"We undertake this life and work so that God's dream for us, for our earth, and for all creation may be reailsed in time and place, and in the hearts of people."
All goals truly worth aspiring to as a Catholic School.
Parent Teacher Interviews
I thank all parents that will make the time to attend parent teacher interviews next Wednesday afternoon and evening. These are such an important opportunity to come together and work in partnership to support your children, and send the clear message that their education is important.
I also apologise that we have a number of staff on leave, sick or attending professional development that will be unable to be at the interviews. There is a significant Catholic School conference on at the same time that impacts these interviews, and alternate dates had other issues. I know that it can be frustrating when a number of teachers are unavailable. Teachers will always be happy to follow up and provide feedback on return if this is wanted. The teachers below are all unfortunately unavailable next week.

Playground improvements update
I have included a few photos below of the new playground and learning area that we have been developing over the last year. This was supported by P & F funds and Government funds and is coming together very nicely.
CAPA NIGHT 2024: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
This year's CAPA Night was held on Tuesday, July 2nd, in the school hall. The event featured Music and Drama performances by students from Years 9 to 12, along with a display of Visual Art by students from Years 9 to 11. The hall was filled with an enthusiastic audience of family and friends, eager to see the culmination of our students' hard work.
Our MCs for the night were Christian Marquez and Tyniko Chelin from Year 12. The duo kept the crowd entertained with their witty banter and excellent hosting skills. The evening kicked off with a guitar instrumental piece called “Voice of the Soul” performed by Maximo, Ranniell, and Nathaniel from Year 11, setting a high standard for the night. Following them, Gese from Year 12 delivered a soulful rendition of “Tennessee Whisky,” raising the bar even higher. Spencer Turner then performed an original song, “Till Death Do Us Part,” showcasing incredible talent.
The first Drama performance was Year 11’s group piece “Waiting for Godot,” featuring Zac, Ranniell, Laura, and Charlotte, who captivated the audience with their slapstick comedy and engaging dialogue. Skye McVerry from Year 10 followed with a powerful version of “Astronomy” by Conan Gray. The Year 12 Drama group then entertained with “Shoe Shine Boys,” featuring Alyssa, Danika, and Kittu in humorous Cockney accents.
Madi Albrow from Year 10 impressed once again with her rendition of the Latin-infused Bossa Nova track “From the Start.” Despite a last-minute change, Lacey from Year 12 delivered a stellar individual monologue, stepping up impressively after a late withdrawal due to injury.
Year 11 brought some heavy metal energy with a thrilling performance of Slayer’s “South,” featuring drummer Caiden, bassist Nathaniel, and guitarists Ranniell and Maximo. Darcie Bennett followed with a compelling individual monologue, and Breanna Jayde from Year 11 sang a heartfelt version of Adele’s “Love in the Dark,” taking the audience on an emotional journey.
As the night drew to a close, Year 9 music students Anna, Izabella, Lara, Claudia, and Lachlan delivered a professional rendition of “Teenage Dirtbag,” with a guest appearance from William on vocals. The final performance was a powerful rendition of System of a Down’s “Aerials” by Year 12 music students Kyle, Shannon, Lachlan, Dante, and Maximo from Year 11, complete with an impressive lighting show and electrifying guitar solos.
Congratulations to all our performers, stage crew, and staff for making CAPA Night 2024 a resounding success. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our talented students. See you all at JT Superstars!
Spotlight on Student Achievements: Work Placement Success!
Over the holidays, our entertainment students have been diligently applying their skills and gaining invaluable experience through various work placements. Among these dedicated individuals is Ethan Bloor, who has truly shone in his role on a large-scale production.
Ethan has been working brilliantly on the acclaimed production of "Singing In The Rain" at the Town Hall Theatre. Collaborating closely with a team of professional technicians, Ethan has demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and teamwork. His hard work and commitment to excellence have not only contributed significantly to the success of the production but also showcased the high standard of talent we nurture here at the College.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ethan for his outstanding achievements. His success is a testament to his hard work and the quality of our entertainment program. Ethan has represented both himself and the College with great distinction, and we couldn't be prouder of his accomplishments.
During the July school holidays, eight students, along with Mr. Hatton and Dr. Harris, traveled to Melbourne to participate in the three-day Geotech conference held at RMIT University. At the event, students gained insights into the geospatial industry from experts and collaborated with industry professionals to solve geospatial problems. They used ArcGIS software to collect data from fieldwork and overlay this on various city map layers. Additionally, they engaged in a geocaching activity around the city.
The students had the opportunity to spend time with female role models and professionals from leading organizations, including Esri Australia, The Geospatial Council of Australia, FrontierSI, VicMap (Department of Transport and Planning), SheMaps, James Cook University, and RMIT University. The event highlighted career pathways in geospatial and space technologies.
Beyond the conference, students enjoyed exploring Melbourne. Activities included attending an AFL match, experiencing a light show, visiting the Old Melbourne Gaol, Melbourne Museum, and the State Library, and indulging in the city's renowned food, coffee, gelato, and shopping. The students represented our school wonderfully, making the excursion a unique and memorable learning experience.
Here’s what some of the students had to say about the excursion:
Joelene Ignacio: “The GeoTech conference was a new experience for me and allowed me to gain new insights into geography and science. The part I enjoyed most was a fantastic woman who informed us about the applications of Geospatial technology in marine biology showing how the technology was used to track shark migration patterns and how the data could help wildlife protection and track climate change. I also enjoyed socialising with other girls and developing friendships with them. Overall, GeoTech was a positive experience and left me with new tools to use in the classroom and beyond.”
Metta Keen: “The Geotech conference was a wonderful experience, in which I learnt innovative ways to collect and analyse data. Additionally, I created new friendships with other students my age in Melbourne looking to study in this field. Going to a different state was an eye-opener for thinking about my future careers. My favourite part of the entire trip was being able to use Story Maps. Overall, this was an immersive school trip, leading me to gain a substantial amount of knowledge from experts who are passionate about their fields.”
Anna Zammit: “I had the honour to attend the Geotechnology conference in Melbourne. It was an exciting experience that I loved. I found the second day of the conference the most interesting, where we met a marine biologist who taught us collection of data and how to put that information into maps (plus a lot of shark facts!!) All of the mathematics, science, and geography were really fascinating, and the conference opened some new opportunities going into the HSC.”
The Melbourne Geotech excursion provided our students with invaluable experiences and exposure to cutting-edge technologies and potential career paths, all while enjoying the vibrant culture and attractions of Melbourne.

Diocesan and Pathways update
JT finished on high at the end of Term 2, with success across Diocesan and MISA competitions. This is such a positive as we move past the halfway point of our 2024 sporting year, particularly as the feedback from coaches and managers is that our students are not only performing well, but representing the school with pride, enthusiasm and integrity. As a Sports Coordinator I believe that our behaviour as people is just as important as results, and I am proud of how our athletes are conducting themselves.
Good luck to our athletes competing at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival next Friday!
