Easter Liturgy
The John Therry community participated in our Easter Liturgy on Thursday 28th March in the College Hall. The death and resurrection of Jesus, son of God, is the basis of our faith and so it was important to come together and prepare for the Easter weekend as a community. The student leaders involved in the stations of the Cross, our liturgical dancers and band and choir all working together made this a most memorable occasion. I thank all involved in bringing this special event together.
Chrism Mass
On Tuesday 26th March, Bishop Brian invited school representatives to celebrate the Chrism Mass with representatives from across the Diocese. This most important Mass is celebrated annually with the Bishop and Priests involved in blessing the Holy Oils that are used throughout the year, and recommitting to their priestly commitments. I thank Vivienne and Alyssa for giving up their time to represent our community at this significant event.
Campbelltown City High Achievers Ceremony
It was a pleasure to attend the Campbelltown City Council High Achievers Ceremony on Monday 25th March to acknowledge students right across the region who achieved Band 6 results in the HSC. It was impressive to see just how many high achievers there are from across the Campbelltown region, with John Therry having 19 students alone. While many of the students from all schools were unable to make the evening with work and university commitments, it was very nice to see Jett, Caitlin and Gabriella representing John Therry at this event. It was a night to be incredibly proud of the students from John Therry, and the broader Campbelltown region.
Marist Pilgrimage
I am taking leave in the last week of Term to participate in the Marist Pilgrimage that will include visiting the Hermitage where Marcellin Champagnat founded the Marist Brothers, and the Vatican City that will include a Mass with Pope Francis. We were originally planned to visit Jerusalem and the Holy Lands, but the current war has meant this has had to be adjusted. We will now travel in the footsteps of St Paul, through sites from Ancient Greece and Turkey, where the original story of Jesus was told and the Catholic Church began to spread. We return to Australia on the last Friday of the school holidays, with just enough time to get over jetlag before returning to school for Term 2. It is a great privilege to have this opportunity for 3 weeks of intensive spiritual immersion and learning, and I trust the learnings will better enable me to continue to lead John Therry as an authentically Catholic and Marist community.

Congratulations to the following students from the WISE club, who were successful in their application to secure a spot in the 3 day STEM event “Geotech” at RMIT, Melbourne in July:
Ahnarhla Dhillon
Sibella Kieth
Annabelle Zammit
Hemakshi Kesani
Anabel Martin
Phoebe Eagleton
Caprice Fleijsman
Joelene Ignacio
Metta Keen
Each of these students were also successful in their application for a $1000 travel grant. This is a fantastic achievement as there were only 30 spots available for the event, and only 15 travel grants awarded in total. GeoTech aims to inspire young women to explore careers in geospatial and space technologies. Students will hear from industry experts and develop their skills through practical activities and fieldwork. Students will spend their time with female role models and professionals from leading organisations including Esri Australia, The Geospatial Council of Australia, FrontierSI, VicMap (Department of Transport and Planning), SheMaps, James Cook University, and RMIT University. This event is supported by the federal government.
Well done on securing a place in this exciting event!
Dr Teresa Harris
On Thursday 21st March, we celebrated Harmony Day at John Therry. The day featured cultural performances at assembly, Year 8 hosting stalls at recess, and students and staff wearing orange to recognise the day. It was a wonderful celebration of diversity and belonging. One of the great gifts of John Therry is the very diverse community that allows students to meet people of all different faiths and backgrounds. The best way to breakdown myths and stereotypes about a culture is to know people from the culture, and we are fortunate to have that opportunity here at John Therry. Our College community represents what is possible for a diverse, harmonious society and it is important to celebrate this.
JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 1 Week 9
As we head towards the end of term, students are reminded to complete their Term 2 MISA EOI and Year 9/10 Rec Sport selections. Due to a Sport Provider withdrawing from our rotation, students will have new selection options. Students are asked to complete this task before the end of Term 1, so groups can be finalised for the start of Term 2.
MISA Update:
Congratulations to all of our John Therry MISA teams that have wrapped up their competition games for Term 1. A massive shout out to our 7-9 Boys Softball team and 10-12 Boys Basketball team who finished their season undefeated and took the 1st place seeding heading into their semi’s, which they both won.
Finals Bound - Great job and congratulations to our 4 MISA teams [7-9 Boys Softball, 7-9 Boys Volleyball, 10-12 Boys Basketball and 10-12 Girls Basketball] that will play in Term 1 FINALS. All teams secured comfortable wins in their semi’s, although the Girls Basketball team did hold off a strong comeback from Thomas Hassall. Our 7-9 Boys Volleyball team did it the hard way, securing a last round win and advancing to the final after a MCCC loss.
Unfortunately our Oz Tag teams went down in the semi’s and will now playoff for minor points in their respective games. Our Junior Girls Cricket team will face off for minor points in their 5v6 game.
GO JT!

Match Report |
MVP |
10-12 Boys Basketball |
Won 44 - 30 |
Our semi was probably one of our hardest games yet, we got off to a tough start with plenty of missed shots, turnovers and poor defence which kept OPAC in the game. Once a timeout was called and we got into gear, our defence turned up and we were able to get out to a 14 point lead at half time. This was one of those strange games where we didn’t have any massive individual performances however as a team we played great defence and moved the ball much better on offence. Garang and Kruze made some great defensive plays which led to easy layups which saw us get a lead of 20. OPAC made some tough shots in the final minute to get the lead down to 14. The team is excited for yet another MISA grand final against the winner of Mt Carmel and Broughton. |
Kruze Takiari |
10-12 Girls Basketball |
Won 22 - 26 |
Today was a tough game of redemption against Thomas Hassall who got the win over JT in their previous game earlier this term. JT started the game behind but kept Thomas Hassall’s lead marginal until the second half when our JT girls came out and dominated, maintaining a convincing lead until the final minutes where a few more successful shots from Thomas Hassall began to even out the scoreboard, however it wasn’t enough to secure the win allowing JT to take out the semi 22-26. Overall, Georgina was a key player in this game, securing the most shots, however our MVP for the week is Annelise Hall who played a pivotal all rounder role in today’s semi. Congratulations Annelise! |
Annelise Hall |
10-12 Boys Oz Tag |
Lost 8 - 7 |
A disappointing finish to the season, fielding close to a full team. We showed some positive signs with Coby crossing the line 5 times to keep the team in the game. We looked strong attacking our left hand side but all of that hard work in attack was quickly taken away from us, with a lot of leaked tries through our middle. It will be sad to say goodbye to some of our Year 12 students who have put in so much effort in MISA Oztag throughout their time at John Therry. Thank you Riley, Ben, Miguel, Diego, Angus and Zac. Best wishes for your sporting journey! |
Coby Hilton |
10-12 Girls Oz Tag |
Won 5 - 2 |
An excellent finish to the season for our students, especially our Year 12s who have been excellent leaders in their last MISA Oztag game. Grace and Bridget led the way with outstanding ball skills setting up one another as well as team mates with great opportunities. Gabby was her graceful self making tremendous tags, as well as a near try opportunity where she was over the line but failed to put the ball down. |
MVP: Gabriella Sloan and Chloe Donovan |
7-9 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Lost 66 - 47 |
We lost the toss and Magdalene sent us in to bat. This seemed to be a good thing as we got off to a great start with Jaz (11) and Zoe (16) getting us off to a great start. The game quickly turned as Elissa and Raquel (-3) followed by Makayla and Imogen (17) and Alice and Ebony (6) meant we only compiled a total of 47. Even though we bowled reasonably well and took a few good catches it wasn’t enough to beat Magdalene on the day. |
Zoe Hawkes |
7-9 Boys Softball |
Won 5 - 3 |
JT came up against WCCC in the Grand Final qualifier. We had a strong start with two early runs, but the opposition fought back well to give them a one run lead into the last innings. After a shaky start to the innings, Archer Quick came in and belted a home run and secured a grand final appearance next week. |
Archer Quick |
7-9 Boys Volleyball |
Won 3 - 0 |
A convincing and a good warm up before the final. Did well to maintain composure in hot conditions and recover from a poor first set. Well done for a sound season with steady improvement. |
Levi Wallbridge |
7-9 Girls Volleyball |
Lost 3 - 0 |
It was John Therry’s closest match ever to St Pat’s. The girls were phenomenal and should be proud of their efforts today in the heat. Grace’s sets, Sopfie’s spikes and Emerson’s famous serves were always winning our team some points. And the rallies being the best we have ever played. John Therry’s enthusiasm was seen throughout the courts and we are so proud of the effort and improvement of the team, however we lost a close match. Good job girls and let’s win finals! |

Diocesan and Pathways update
We have an extremely busy few weeks with pathway sports, with JTCC demonstrating great pride and spirit across multiple carnivals. We have had great success and a number of our students have been selected into Wollongong Diocesan teams. Well done to everyone who has represented JTCC as well as our coaches/managers who are integral to ensuring the smooth running of the day.
Bill Turner Trophy
A monumental day for John Therry's girls soccer team as we beat Liverpool Girls High School with a resounding 14-0 victory in their first round of the Bill Turner Trophy. It is the biggest margin by which we have ever won in the 16 years of the competition. The fixture also had its own taste of redemption considering we had been knocked out of the same competition by Liverpool Girls 3 years ago in a 2-1 defeat.
Some phenomenal displays of football were put on show with captain Alice Stephenson (Year 9) opening up the tally followed by some great strikes by 6 other players in the team, including a 4 goal haul by Zoe Hawkes (Year 7) on her debut and a hattrick by Briana Lobos-Zuniga (Year 9). A number of debut appearances in the match turned out to be a gamble that paid off as Cristina Alvarado (Year 7) and Tamariz Lobos-Zuniga (Year 7) were also involved in a brace and goal, respectively, highlighting the emergence of new talent in our school.
Credit must also be given to the defensive duties carried out by the backline, led by household name Jorja Hohberg (Year 10), who didn't stop all game. It's a day to remember for John Therry but more so a promising start to the competition as we prepare for round 2 against Good Samaritan College.
Diocesan Rugby League Selection Trials
On Wednesday 27th March Mr. McGrath took 13 of our top JTCC rugby league players to Ziems Park, Corrimal to attend the Diocesan Rugby League Selection Trials. All the boys performed extremely well in the trials and represented JT with pride and integrity. JTCC had a very successful campaign, with Keiren Mostyn, Josh Booth, Zephaniah McLean and Moni Junior Tumanuvao selected in the 15’s team, and Riley Oitmann, Zac Dittavong selected in the Opens team, with Ben Mostyn as shadow. Players selected will represent Wollongong at the Southern Country Trial Match vs Western Region to be held at Wagga on Wednesday 8th May, 2024 (travel day Tuesday 7th May).
Diocese Girls Touch Carnival
After a minor crisis with the bus in the morning, our girls eventually made it down to Dalton Park in Wollongong for the Diocese Touch Carnival. The U13 Girls team marked an exciting debut for many year 7 students in the sport of touch football. Despite being their first time playing the game competitively, the students showcased remarkable skill, teamwork, and determination, securing victory in two games and leaving the carnival with a positive spirit. Despite their status as newcomers to the sport, the students from John Therry displayed enthusiasm and sportsmanship, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
Unfortunately our 15’s had a tough day too, with more losses on the cards for the ladies but their energy remained high as they wanted to finish the carnival with a win. This opportunity came in the final game against St Benedicts. Led by Keira Thompson-Elliot and Jorja Smith, the ladies were able to score 2 tries while ensuring that St Benedicts attack was stifled on the other end of the field and kept to 0. Overall it was a great day for the girls who kept their energy and spirits high throughout the day. Olivia North was incredible each game, showing off her exceptional footwork to score multiple runaway tries, as well as completing chase down defensive efforts to stop tries. MVP: Keira Thompson-Elliot showed great leadership each game leading the team down the field with her tough runs in the middle, as well as strong defensive efforts during each game. Congratulations to all of the team members, as the girls showed great sportsmanship each game and held their head high even after some tough games.
Our Opens first game was always going to be a tough one against Holy Spirit and today was no exception. We lost our first game but demonstrated resilience and a never give up attitude and were unlucky to have a couple of tries disallowed. We went on to win our next four games against St Johns, Corpus Christi, Mt Carmel and St Josephs showing excellent teamwork and sticking to a basic game plan that saw us controlling the ball and holding possession. At the end of the day the girls finished up 3rd overall out of 10 teams, a commendable effort. This year all of the girls could have been awarded MVP for many different reasons but some key players included Bridget Shearer, who was selected in the Wollongong Open Diocese team, and showed lightning speed and a great read on the game. Another was Grace O’Reilly, who was selected as a shadow player for the Dio team, and improved out of sight over the last year and up and coming talent Ava Hilton who had a few opportunities to show her speed on the field as well. Congratulations to all the girls, they should be very proud of the role they played in the team and the way they conducted themselves with the utmost sportsmanship throughout the day.
Diocese Boys Touch Carnival
Our three boys teams had a great day down at Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow for the Diocesan Boys Touch Carnival in some hot and humid conditions. Our junior team showed great enthusiasm and started off the day with some solid results, including a close game against the eventual overall winners MCCC. Despite this, the boys represented the College with PRIDE and demonstrated their willingness to learn and grow. The U15’s team was made up of mostly league, oztag and AFL players who were keen to learn the game of touch more and more as the day went on. The team gelled and clocked up a number of wins across the day and finished in 2nd place overall. Much of this success was due to teamwork shown by all the boys, with everyone playing their role, and the lightning and fancy footwork of Nathaniel Leal. Our opens team went into the day with confidence after a 3rd place finish in 2023, but unfortunately slipped and finished in 6th overall. Despite the result, the team were fantastic and were hungry to improve each game, incorporating new touch strategy and tactics. A special mention to William Shearer (Year 9) who stepped up into the Opens team and was the youngest (and smallest) player and was the team’s leading try scorer.
A big congratulations to Riley Oitmann who was selected into the Open Diocesan team, and Nathaniel Leal, Sully O’Dwyer and Josh Booth who were all selected in the 15’s Diocesan team to compete at in the NSWCCC Championships in the Central Coast in April.
Pathway Sporting Achievements:
On Tuesday four of our fierce females traveled to Canberra to attend the Southern Country 18’s Rugby League girls trials. The girls represented JTCC with pride amongst a strong contingent of athletes, all vying for a position in the team to progress to the NSWCCC Rugby League trials to be held in St. Mary’s in May. Congratulations to Navara, Bridget and Annelise who were successfully selected in the team. We look forward to seeing your performance in May.
External Sporting Achievements:
Dominic Baker (year 10) competed at the New South Wales Junior Athletic Championships over the weekend and had a very good campaign. He finished with the silver medal in the 1500 metres, a silver medal in the javelin and a bronze in the 800 metres. Dom’s biggest achievement was breaking the Australian record for his multi-class category U17 F37 for javelin. He now holds the Australian U15 record and also the U17 record.
Dominic has now qualified for the Australian Athletic Championships in Adelaide in the April school holidays. Good luck Dom!
