John Therry Cyclic Inquiry
As part of our Dicoesan planning and improvement framework, every 4 years each school undertakes a cyclic inquiry process to look deeply at how we have progressed, and what our priorities should be moving forward. Next Monday and Tuesday we welcome an external panel to the school to learn more about how things work at John Therry. This will include visiting classrooms, talking with teachers, students, support staff and importantly parents.
There is the opportunity for parents to come to school for some morning tea and discuss with the panel your thoughts on how you are finding John Therry as a parent and what you would like the College to focus on more in the coming years. Parent sessions run from 12-12:30pm on Monday 24th July, or 11-11:30am on Tuesday 25th July. If you can make this and would like to be involved, please complete the very brief form below. We would love to hear your voice!
Cultural Diversity
One of the great gifts of John Therry is the diversity of student backgrounds that make up our community. Our students are lucky to get to know people from all different cultures and backgrounds and learn that many of the stereotypes and prejudices out there don't hold up when we get to know people. Most importantly, John Therry has a wonderful culture where this diversity is embraced and our students are comfortable celebrating their culture. This was highlighted in two key events at the end of Term 2, being our NAIDOC assembly, and cultural performances that took place on the last day of term.
NAIDOC Assembly
On Thursday 29th June we celebrated NAIDOC week at our College assembly. Naidoc week falls in the first week of the school holidays and the theme this year was 'for our elders'.
Through NAIDOC week, we celebrate the remarkable gifts of diversity that enrich our community and, in particular, honor and acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the Aboriginal culture. At the heart of our community is the various cultures, backgrounds, traditions, and perspectives we each bring, and it is through embracing our diversity that we truly flourish.
As a catholic community we commit ourselves to continue a journey of learning, understanding, and respect of all cultures. We aim to be a community that recognises and appreciates the invaluable contributions of the Aboriginal culture and all other cultures that make up the tapestry of our community. By embracing our differences, we can forge a stronger, more inclusive future, where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered.
7-10 Parent teacher interviews - zoom
On Monday 24th July, we have scheduled our 7-10 PTS Interviews to run by zoom. To ensure staff can make it home safely for these interviews, we have adjusted bell times for the day to finish at 2:40pm as per our Tuesday bell times. Buses will run at normal times and students will be supervised until the usual end of day.
Further information about the interviews and booking can be found in compass. Feel free to contact the office if you have any issues with this.
On the last day of Term 2, the JTCC community was able to celebrate the cultural diversity of our talented students! From captivating dances to musical performances, students showcased the beauty and diversity of their cultures from around the world. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication throughout the term with lunch time rehearsals and working with each other to make these performances happen. As a community, we appreciate and embrace the richness of different traditions that make our College community inclusive and diverse!
John Therry Rosemeadow Year 12 students' Immersion Experience at Our Lady Help of Christians Rosemeadow
Year 12 students from John Therry Catholic College, Rosemeadow who are considering a career in teaching were recently offered the opportunity for an Immersion Experience at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Parish Primary School in Rosemeadow. Our Lady Help of Christians teachers graciously welcomed the John Therry students into their classrooms to gain valuable insights into teaching in a primary classroom. These students were distributed across various grade levels and exposed to a diverse range of learning experiences. The younger students genuinely enjoyed having the John Therry students in their classrooms and working with them. This brief opportunity was enough for some students to affirm that teaching is the right career path for them. Here are some testimonials from the students:
"The immersion experience provided me with a profound insight into the life of a primary school teacher. Engaging with the students through various activities allowed me to gain confidence in my decision to pursue a career as a primary school teacher in the future. I am truly grateful for the opportunity." - Kaitlin
"The immersion experience at Our Lady Help of Christians offered exceptional insights into the reality of teaching in a primary school. I actively participated in numerous activities with the students, both inside and outside the classroom, which enabled me to interact with younger students on a level I hadn't experienced before. This experience bolstered my confidence in choosing a career as a primary teacher. I highly recommend any individual with even the slightest interest in primary teaching to partake in an immersion experience. I found it immensely beneficial and fulfilling, solidifying my decision to pursue a career in primary teaching." - Scarlett
"I had the privilege of visiting Our Lady Help of Christians and having the opportunity to work with the kindergartners! This experience provided me with valuable insight into whether this is a path I would like to pursue in the future, and fortunately, it has even motivated me to learn more about this scholarship program." - Madison
The Year 11 SLR 1 Unit students embarked on an exciting outdoor excursion, encompassing various physical activities that included an 8km kayak along the Port Hacking River, a 10km bike ride through Lady Carrington Drive, and a 6km walk through the Royal National Park.
Students have recently been studying “Outdoor Recreation” as part of their Preliminary Course and as part of this course, they have learnt about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and recognise the need to be responsible and informed decision makers.
The objective of this excursion was to further develop their understanding of and competence in a range of recreational pursuits. The day tested the students cardiovascular endurance and allowed the students to test themselves mentally and physically. It was a challenging day where the students were able to overcome self doubt and enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.
All students are to be commended for their positive attitude and their ability to overcome the challenges throughout the day. Well done!
