Pentecost Sunday
As we look to celebrate Pentecost Sunday this week, we are reminded of the incredible hope this special day brings to us as Catholics. Pentecost marks the powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, igniting a fire within their hearts and inspiring the birth of the early Christian community.
Pentecost Sunday reminds us that God's presence is alive and active in our lives. This divine presence encourages us to live out our Catholic values more boldly, inspiring acts of kindness, compassion, and unity among our peers.
As we come together to celebrate Pentecost Sunday, may the Holy Spirit fill our hearts with excitement, peace, and an unyielding hope. Let us be the shining lights in our schools, communities, and beyond, reflecting God's love and spreading the joy of the Gospel to all those around us.
Atomic Habits - tiny changes, remarkable results
At our school assembly last week, I read a small section of the book 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear. I found the book simple yet powerful in its ability to show how important our habits are, and some simple ways that we can change our habits to make a huge difference in our lives.
Some of the most impotant habits that we aim to develop in our students are habits for learning. Developing our mind and our brain's capacity is the most powerful thing we can do as a young person, as our education has the potential to shape and improve our lives. My example of reading regularly, to learn new ideas and expand our minds, would be the most powerful habit I would hope that every student aims to develop. It is a habit that we know makes a huge difference for success at school, but more importantly, sets us up to continue learning well beyond school, and adapt to an ever changing world.
We have implemented quiet reading over the last 2 years in learning group every Wednesday morning to assist developing this habit, and I encourage you to talk with your child and encourage them to find books of interest to read in their own time as well.
Reading just 10 minutes per day adds up to 60 hours of reading over the course of a year, and a wealth of new ideas and vocabulary. A small change that can yield remarkable results.
Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey
Thank you to the parents who completed our TTFM surveys and gave us feedback on your perspectives of John Therry. There is some really valuable feedback for us to review and this will help us determine some priorities moving forward. We will share parent feedback at our upcoming P & F meeting and in a future newsletter so you can see what feedback we received.
The Survey organisation did leave out our Faith based questions and we would greatly appreciated you taking 1 minute to complete the 5 multiple choice questions in this survey.
Professional Learning Day (Pupil Free) Monday 29th May.
On Monday our teachers will be participating in professional learning to help differentiate for our students and ensure all students can access learning. The quality of our classroom practices as teachers are critical for student learning and we continue to prioritise teacher learning to ensure they are aware of the latest evidence and approaches to improve student learning.

National Sorry Day, or the National Day of Healing, is an annual event that has been held in Australia on 26 May since 1998.
The Bringing Them Home report, which was tabled in Australian Parliament, was the result of an inquiry into government policies and practices during the 20th century that caused Aboriginal children to be separated from their families, with the intention of assimilating them into white Australian culture. This resulted in what became known as the "Stolen Generations", with the effects of these traumatic removals being felt by succeeding generations even today. The report made many recommendations, including that state and federal governments should issue formal apologies and that funding should be provided to help deal with the consequences of the policies.
Some John Therry students attended the Sorry Day Service on Wednesday 24th May as part of our commitment to Sorry Day and reconciliation week. This service was held at the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Church in Minto, in support of Sr Kerry who works closely with our College. Our students helped in all aspects of the Mass and represented the College with great pride as always. We are blessed to have students from diverse backgrounds at John Therry, including many who are Aboriginal. The great gift of this is that students get to know people from all different cultures, and see first hand that the stereotypes that might exist for different groups of people are unfair and untrue. We have far more in common as humans than differences between cultures. We hope that reconciliation week provides the opportunity for us all to learn more about the beautiful culture and gifts of the Aboriginal traditions, so we can walk more gently together into the future.
CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION
Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Rosemeadow will be holding their Annual Procession in honour of the Blessed Sacrament on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 11th June at 2:30pm. It will include Scripture Readings, Rosary, Procession and Benediction. This is for all Parishes in the Macarthur Region, and all are welcome to join in this witness to our Eucharistic Lord among us.
ALUMNI SUCCESS STORY - TAMEKA THORNE
Our Dux of 2022, Tameka Thorne, was recently the focus of an article by the University of Wollongong and highlights the wonderful opportunities available to our students at John Therry when they are prepared to work hard and strive for their dreams. We congratulate Tameka and look forward to seeing the work she does in the future.
On Thursday 25th May, our local Police Liaison Officer Allan Clapham, came out to talk with our Year 7 to 9 students about online safety. He shared the police and legal perspective of online safety and some of the issues facing children and young people at the moment. The talk included addressing issues of young people sharing inappropriate images with others, and consequences of forwarding on any inappropriate images that a young person may receive.
These issues are addressed in our pastoral lessons and PDHPE program, so having students hear this from a Police perspective was valuable to help increase student understanding. Allan Clapham has been a regular visitor over the years and addresses a range of topics with our students as part of our pastoral program. We thank him for his time with us and look forward to having him back later in the year.
YEAR 11 DRAMA EXCURSION: ‘AT WHAT COST?’
On Wednesday, 17th May, students in the Year 11 Drama class attended the production ‘At what Cost?’ at the Belvoir Theatre in Surrey Hills. The timely and provocative play explores modern Aboriginality and Tasmania’s ‘lost tribe’. The students were navigated through the differing perspectives on Aboriginal identity with unassuming clarity. Instead of picking a side, or trying to push a point of view, the play builds a picture of a system in which identity is a commodity, and everyone is a player in a game where no-one wins. For the students this evocative immersive experience was both a tragedy and awakening. Students truly enjoyed this, gaining valuable knowledge from the engulfing monologues, theatrical lighting and haunting sound effects. This is an experience that was a conversation starter for students as they left the theatre that provides a snapshot of the trials of post-colonial identity and ongoing fights faced by First Nations people.
Alyssa Giampaolo and Danika Jones stated ‘Our Year 11 Drama excursion was such a delight. The performance ‘At what cost?’ depicted a contemporary storyline about Aboriginal Spirituality. ‘At what cost’ additionally speaks about the politics behind Aboriginal culture and many different features that show Australia’s history. Throughout this performance it highlights the connection between people, their land and their community and the teachings extracted from these factors. As a class we learnt more about the Aboriginal culture, the way they look after their land and the beauty of their strength through relevant topics and issues that occur in our day to day life. We would like to thank Miss Abela for planning today and Mr Peters for coming with us to the theatre’.
Mr. Stephen Peters (Creative Arts Performing Arts Leader of Learning)
Last Tuesday May 9th, our school along with other schools a part of the Macarthur
Independent Schools Association (MISA) completed a workshop run by
Sport for Jove. This day workshop had three activities completed by
all the attendees:
- Speaking Shakespeare
- Shakespeare's Images
- Building a Scene
Each activity helped us develop transferable skills in relation to Shakespeare that could be used in both English and Drama. This day was entertaining and engaging, encouraging students to participate in group activities and get creative with their peers and students from other schools.
My group started the day by taking a deep dive into the world of Shakespeare and how he wrote, highlighting the poetic devices from a scene from Romeo and Juliet, and discussing as a group the meaning of each stanza. This gave us valuable insight towards plays we thought we knew before, learning double meanings buried between the lines. Ending this activity we stood up and spoke the scene to its proper rhythm: Iambic pentameter.
The next activity we took part in gave us an extract from a Shakespeare play and we were tasked to decipher what it meant and create a short piece embodying it. In creating this piece we paid special attention to the ways we used sour bodies incorporating elements of physical theatre. After we devised and practised our pieces we watched them as a whole class and gave out feedback. We also created a living painting, once again using elements of physical theatre.
Our final rotation of the day was Building a scene, however, when building our scenes we were forced to use a different perception, we changed the way we thought, and how we viewed everyday life instances, this exercise really got the brain moving, interpreting concepts and themes in ways previously unthought of.
Overall, this day gave students a chance to get creative and socialise
with like-minded individuals. This event could not have been half as outstanding without Miss Abela’s planning, support and care she put into this incredible day.

MACARTHUR MULTICULTURAL CHILDRENS FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Year 12 student Tiana Giampaolo who represented our school in the Macarthur Multicultural Children's Festival in Koshigaya Park on Sunday the 7th of May.
The Children’s Festival is a place where multicultural communities come together. There are many cultural groups participating in the Children’s Festival. This was particularly exemplified in the On-Stage Entertainment program, cultural display stalls and the children’s parade. Their singing, dancing and other artistic performances, both traditional and modern, reflected the cultures of people around the world.
Without a doubt, the contributions of cultural groups through their performances at the Children’s Festival and other festivals and cultural gatherings will ultimately enrich the culture of Australian society. Furthermore, the Children’s Festival is also a good opportunity for immigrant communities to absorb Australian values - some of which may be pretty new to them. The Children’s Festival is working with other cultural groups to advance unity and harmony in the community, starting with young people.

JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 2 Week 5
The sporting year is in full swing, with John Therry having a positive start to our Term 2 MISA season. After only winning the one premiership in term 1, our coaches and students have come out firing and are in a good position to push for the multiple premierships. We currently have 4 teams sitting in 1st place with multiple teams in 2nd or 3rd.
A big shout out to our coaches who have been taking the time out of their busy schedules to train our students. Hopefully our coaches have our teams peaking come finals time and we can move into 1st Place in the overall MISA Championship.
Year 9/10 students have currently enjoyed 3 rotations of their rec sport calendar and it is good to hear students are enjoying their time off school grounds. A reminder that students will now move into a new rotation of rec sport. Students are reminded to read their run sheet every Tuesday morning for information regarding bus schedules and rec sport rotations.
Students will move into their 4th rotation for the rest of the term.
Any issues or questions regarding sport, please email me - bodekerl01@dow.catholic.edu.au.

7 - 9 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Won 36 - 32 vs Mt Carmel |
Congratulations to the boys for their effort at training and at the game. After receiving some key skills for the low post, Moni T, Cooper Dickie and Rewa Takiari were unstoppable in the low post. Our guards were much better this week in limiting their turnovers which allowed the team to get some shots off. We took the lead into the halftime break for the first time this season after a mix of transition baskets and half court offense. Tighter defensive presence and rebounding were the key instructions and soon enough, the starting five extended our lead to 7 points. Mt Carmel soon responded with some up-tempo defense and they took the lead heading into the final 5 minutes of the game. We composed ourselves and on the back of Cooper and Rewa, JTCC made some key buckets to keep pur opposition at bay. Monster efforts this week by Cooper and Rewa. Cooper Dickie - 4/6 shooting, 1/10 ft, 14 rebounds 2 blocks Rewa Takiari - 3/7 shooting, 3/9 ft, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks. Great improvements this week by Thomas Elliot, Deng Deng and Ayrton Da Silva. MVP: Rewa Takiari |
MR JEFFREYS |
7-9 GIRLS BASKETBALL |
LOST 8-41 vs MCCC |
Well, what a game! You cannot fault the tenacity of these young ladies. They are tough, resilient, and approach the game with class. It was a tough day out today. Mount Carmel brought their A game and let our girls know it. Obviously some serious players who meant business. We went in at halftime 0-22, but our girls were not rattled. Mount Carmel coach, to her credit, offered to end the game there and just play for kicks, but our girls wouldn’t have it. The girls played out the rest of the game with a fighting spirit and an attitude to be proud of. They were playing hard AND having fun!! Finishing 8-41, the game was played with such positivity. Congratulations to our girls for never giving up. Awesome effort!! MVP: Mary Camilerri |

10-12 Boys Rugby League |
38-0 |
Another classic performance from none other than the senior John Therry boys ensured another crushing victory. THAC started well, however the sheer physical dominance pushed them out of the game. The middle of the field consisted of some awesome performances from Tonna, Finn, Jerome, Ben and Zac. They were then supported by our strong outside backs Riley, Corey and Aiden. Noah and Mitch led the way playing some simple eyes up footy which led to easy points. Defence was our strongpoint, conceding 0 points and great contact from Roger and Cooper. MVP: Cooper Tonna |
MR TRAN |
U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 1 |
Won 24-16 |
Today the girls rugby league took on St Pats for round 3 of the misa competition, it was a very close and high intensity game but the team came away with a 6-4 win, continuing their undefeated run. There was a lot of hard work from individual players and the team as a whole with solid performances from all. MVP this week was very deserving and went to Bridget Shearer who lead the team in both defence and attack, scoring 4 tries. MVP: Bridget Shearer |

3 points, 2 scored, 1 conceded. Another win against a Magdalene side that seemed a little bit weaker than previous years but a well deserved result none the less. The lads were instructed to play narrower in the middle of the park with a 4-5-1 system in place. Wingers were sitting closer to midfield to shut down any space for the opponents to play into and allowed for short sharp passes to control the game. Backline was rock solid - luckily Ryano made the bus this week to slot in at RB. Great movement from Luke to earn a well deserved goal after breaking through the back line from a Xavier through ball. Luke carried the ball a few yards to place the ball into the back of the net, a cool, calm finish. A 40 yard volley into the top right hand corner levelled the game at 1-1 and early in the second half winger / stand in goal keeper Coby scored a header off a corner. Hunter stood in as GK and produced a match winning catch at the end of the game to ensure the 3 points. Back even stronger next week. MVP: Cody 3 - Cody 2 - Luke 1 - Emiliano Player of the year award points tally 5 - Luke 3 - Cody 2 - Angus 1 - Emiliano 1 - Preston |

11/12 Girls Netball |
Win 17-10 vs THAC |
Our second game of the season saw the JT girls take the court as a strong and united team. More familiar working with each other saw clear communication, strong passing and smooth feeding to our shooters which lead to a 17-10 win against Thomas Hassall. The team were stoked with their win, and feeling fired up for next week! We had a clear MVP this week, Samara Vaga. |
Mr Geribo |
10-12 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Won 67-49 vs MCCC |
In a tight game against Mount Carmel, our senior girls' indoor cricket team emerged victorious, prevailing with a score of 67-49. It was a closely contested match that kept both sides interested until the last over. A special thanks to our new recruits Tiara, Moana and Angelica, who filled in for our injured and absent teammates. MVP: Grace Tutunoa |
Mr Albery |
7-9 Boys Hockey |
Won 1-0 vs MAS |
A game where we dominated possession and field position, our passes were smooth and we worked together as a team. We had plenty of shots on goal and started to develop our set piece plays. A great run by Travis from halfway beating several players before slotting a goal was the difference. MVP Travis Campbell. |
Miss Moon |
7-9 Mixed Frisbee |
Lost 20-12 vs MCCC |
Tough game for the John Therry Frisbee team today. JT were first to score however Mt Carmel were quick to counter and ended up on top at half time. John Therry were determined to close that gap and came out in the second half strong. Despite our best efforts and impressive attack, our defence let us down and we walked away with a 12-20 loss. Special shout-out to Sienna who scored four goals and Jazwyn who scored two. MVP - Nicholas Augustine |
MR CHAPMAN |
10-12 Boys Softball |
LOST 6-5 vs MAS |
Our JT boys came up against MAS in a closely fought game. We batted first and struggled early on, however, we made a resurgence in the second innings and managed to go up 5-4. Going into the last innings, we were full of confidence but some poor ball handling cost us in the end. 6-5 MAS MVP: Mason McPhee |

7 - 9 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Won 57 -35 vs Thomas Hassall |
The boys started Round 2 of their MISA season and we were up against Thomas Hassall, the only team to defeat us in Round 1. The boys have trained well over the past few weeks and have learned key skills in offense and defense to promote individual and team success. This was on show today. The team still take verbal instructions too literally. I ask them to make their shots count, so they take less shots, but true to word, they make them. 14/23 field goals in the first half, multiple rebounds, assists and block shots still saw JTCC lead by 1 point at the break. A few careless passes and dribbles turned into easy opposition fast break lay-ups and THAC were still in the game. We refined our team goals and in the second half, some great team basketball played. Deng Deng was huge at both ends of the court today along with Rewa and Cooper once again. Deng - 5/11 fg, 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists Cooper - 6/7 fg, 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists Rewa - 7/9 fg, 1/1 3pt, 17 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block MVP: Deng Deng - set a standard that will now be expected each week. |

Coming off a win from last week the Year 11/12 netball team came in hopeful to defeat St Pats today. Despite their best efforts, the speed and height of the other team for the best of us today. Lost 28-24 vs St Pats |
The girls played well with 7 players and no reserves For 5 minutes of the game they played with 6 players due to a slight ankle injury The score was 7 - 6, we suffered a loss that would have been a draw if the referee didn't allow the drop ball a try which the team was telling him. I would like to give them all MVP of the game but I have to chose 1 player which goes to Ruby Marks |
Mr Holmes |
11/12 Boys Soccer |
Lost 1-0 vs MCCC |
The score should read 6-1 but instead it reads 0-1. The squad stepped up today in a time with 5 players out. The game could have been wrapped up earlier if our shots were placed either side of the opposition goal keepers feet, often the shots ending directed at him in his hands or the ball ended up in the Nun’s garden. In attack we were sharp but lacked that finish. Midfield kept the ball moving and as a squad OPTA data would have suggested close to 85% possession. Defensively we were solid and a lofted cross over the keeper into the goal at the end of the game took the 3 points away from us. I don’t like to use the word fluke, but nothing else comes to mind. MVP Jake Charlton-Nelson 3 points - Jake Charlton-Nelson 2 points - Angus O’Dwyer 1 point - Emiliano Aguirre Player of the year award points tally 5 - Luke 3 - Coby 3 - Angus 2- Emiliano 1 - Preston 1 - Jake |

The Girls should be proud of their effort against Magdalene College. Strong bowling from Madeline S. kept the opposition to a total of 48 runs, the John Therry Girls breezed past this with their first 3 sets of batters. The total score ended in a whopping 86 runs to 48, with Madeline S. and Grace T tying with 15 runs a piece. The JTCC Senior Girls Cricket team continue their long running win streak. MVP voted by the team is Tiara Kurisunkal, for her energy and consistency, well done |

A bit of a scrappy game today, but once they got in front they never looked back. Amazing goals from Travis and Sully. Man of the match performance from Harrison Clinch in goals, swatting away a determined opposition. MVP Harrison Clinch |

7-9 Mixed Frisbee |
Unfortunate loss for our John therry frisbee team who fought hard against Magdalene. Despite Magdalene’s convincing win over mount Carmel in round 2 who were victorious against us last week, John Therry went in with their heads high. Magdalene took the lead early on and John Therry was able to keep their lead marginal throughout the entirety of the game until a controversial final goal from Magdalene. Well done to Ava, Sienna and Jeshua for their goals and special thanks to Alice for filling in. Final score 10-5. Congratulations to this weeks MVP Jeshua. |

JT batted first in their match against Magdalene and started very strong getting the first 5 batters home. We then fielded well to restrict Magdalene to just 2 runs, before having two big batting collapses consecutively which put us under immense pressure. In the final innings we were only ahead by one and with bases loaded the game was all but over. A spectacular double play secured the 5-4 win by JT. MVP: Marvette Varela |

2023 DIOCESAN CROSS COUNTRY.
On the 22nd of May, John Therry sent 35 students to Nowra to compete at the 2023 Diocesan Cross Country Carnival. Students bravely dealt with the cold rosemeadow mornings before heading on the bus down to Nowra. It was good to be back at the renown Willandra Cross Country track, with students getting to experience the tough conditions first hand. Our cross country mostly consisted of Year 7-10 students, who were all very eager to compete against the other schools in the Diocesan.
Overall it was a tough day, with our students finding the conditions and course difficult. Despite this, our students were very well behaved and respectful throughout the entire day. They all enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to next year's carnival.
Congratulations to the following students who were selected in the Wollongong Diocesan Team and will now compete at the NSW CCC Cross Country Carnival.
Dominic Baker (Junior Multiclass)
Maahir Boonzaier (5th Place - 14 Boys)
Darcy Wilson - Darcy has been given a wild card entry as he was unable to attend the carnival due to his involvement in CCC Soccer
Thanks for a great day.
Mr Bodeker.
