Attendance
John Therry attendance rate as at Friday 17th March - 84%
In the last newsletter I talked about the importance of attendane and punctuality as a habit that has a large impact on school performance and beyond school in the world of work. I have included our current attendance data at the moment showing our overall attendance rate. This averages around 84% and across a year would mean missing 6 weeks of school. It is almost impossible to acheive our potential missing so much learning so our challenge remains to improve this attendance rate, and I will continue to update this in future newsletters.
How is your child's attendance rate and do you need support with this? Our pastoral team are here to help and we can support your child if there are some barriers to school attendance.
All parents and carers are invited to attend our P & F meeting being held on Tuesday 21st March at 6:30pm in our staff common room. We will discuss current happenings at John Therry and look at ways to allocate P & F funds to benefit students. We hope to see you there.
A reminder that Enrolment Applications are due on 31st March 2023. Last year we had a number of siblings almost miss out on a place as they had not completed an application on time and they relied on students withdrawing to get a place at John Therry. Siblings are one of our highest priorities for enrolment, but applications must be received on time for us to be able to use this. Packages are available at the front office or on our school webpage.
John Therry Strategic Planning
John Therry is undergoing a significant cyclic inquiry review this year as part of a broader Diocesan approach to school planning. The Lighting the Way plan below outlines the ambitions of the Diocese. We as a school commnunity will be seeking parent feedback on the coming months to assist our planning that will guide the next 4 years at John Therry. Student and parent voice will be very important in determining our plans so we encourage you to complete this survey when it arrives.

Uniform Matters
As we move towards the end of Term 1, students and parents / carers are reminded that our College uniform expectations remain high.
- Sports jackets are only to be worn with the sports uniform, not with the academic uniform.
- John Therry white sport socks (or plain white socks) are to be worn with the sport uniform. These must be visible (no ankle socks). Black socks are not to be worn with the sports uniform.
- Appropriate sports shoes must be worn for sport and PDHPE practical classes. Shoes for both boys and girls must be recognised as a sporting shoe. Shoes should not be black in entirety. Basketball, surf, skate, canvas, slip-on or similar shoes are not recognised as a sporting shoe and are not permitted.
Homework Club & Senior Study
Homework Club is held each Tuesday and Thursday from 3.20 - 4.30pm in the College Library. Senior Study also runs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons until 5pm. The numbers of students attending homework club and study are steadily increasing.
For junior students, this time provides an opportunity to complete homework, prepare for assessments and work with teachers. There are many staff who generously give their time to these sessions to work with students and offer guidance.
For senior students, study provides an opportunity to engage in collaborative study, complete study notes and prepare for exams / assessments. Senior students are enouraged to attend these sessions where possible to build their study habits and skills.
Student Food Orders
We have noticed an increase in students arranging for food to be delivered to the College during break times. Students and parents / carers are reminded that our canteen facilities are available each recess and lunch and that students are not permitted to order food into the College.
Staff Professional Learning Day
On Monday 13th March, our teaching staff engaged in a professional learning day focused on strategic planning for the next four years of development of John Therry Catholic College. There is much to celebrate and acknowledge through the learning that has happened at the College, and there was rich discussion about how learning and wellbeing can be further embedded into the culture of John Therry. Professional Learning for teachers is critical to ensuring we are able to provide our students with the high quality education they deserve. The passion and dedication of our staff was evident through their collaboration on the day. Teachers reflected on and reviewed current teaching and learning practices at the College, and planned for ways to further embed effective learning into the John Therry culture.

On Thursday March 2nd, both Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts students, escorted by Mrs Hume and Mr Peters visited the Art Gallery of NSW to view the ‘Artexpress’ exhibition and Case Study talk. In conjunction with this, the students visited the new North building of the gallery; The Sydney Modern Project. ARTEXPRESS is an annual exhibition of exemplary artworks created by students for the HSC in Visual Arts. The works represent a broad range of subject matter, approaches, styles and media including painting, photomedia, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, documented forms, textiles and fibre, ceramics, time-based forms and collections of works. ARTEXPRESS represents the high standards and diversity achieved by Year 12 Visual Arts students in New South Wales schools and is a joint partnership between the NSW Education Standards Authority and the NSW Department of Education. Both Year 11 and 12 were amazed at the exhibition and grateful to hear the curator Louise Halpin and three Artexpress exhibitors in the case study talk in the auditorium.
After lunch, we went to the Sydney Modern Project. This new, open and accessible home for art, is sensitive to the beautiful parkland setting overlooking Sydney Harbour with its huge glass windows and monumental interior space. It is Australia’s first art museum to be awarded the highest rating for sustainable design. The $344 million Sydney Modern Project is the most significant cultural development in the city since the opening of the Sydney Opera House nearly half a century ago. Inside this amazing space students were part of South Korea conceptual artist Kimsooja’s monumental interactive and immersive work Archive of mind. It forms the centrepiece of Making Worlds, featured in the large column-free gallery on lower level 1 of the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building. This is the first time that Kimsooja’s participatory installation will be on display in Australia. Our students were invited to collaborate in the creation of clay spheres. Amassed together, these spheres form a gestural echo of the way in which artists create diverse new worlds. This echo reverberates throughout the exhibition, where ideas of mapping, creation, connection and the passing of time further bind the art on display. Thank you to all the students on their exemplary behaviour and Mrs. Hume who greatly assisted our students on the day.

JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Week 8
For the first time in a few years, our Term 1 season has been gifted with some beautiful, albeit extremely hot weather. The regular season of our MISA competition has come to a conclusion and we look ahead to the next few weeks of semi finals and grand finals. Congratulations to Mr McGraths 10-12 Boys OzTag team who have gone through the season undefeated and are in prime position to take home the premiership for this term. We have several other teams who have qualified for semi finals, we wish all teams good luck for their upcoming finals.
Diocesan Touch Football Update -
U15 Boys - There were many Year 8 - 10 students keen to trial and represent the college, with a lot of talent we opted for two trials. After selecting the team we had a good preparation, training against the Open boys team and were feeling confident leading into the carnival.
The morning was hot early and we were in for a massive day in the sun. We started our first game against Corpus Christi, who were speedy and caught us off guard with 3 early tries in a competitive game, we started the day with a loss. Our next game was against Mt Carmel (the carnival winners) where we played our best as a team and finished with a 2-2 draw.
As the day progressed we definitely improved, however we struggled to get a win with the short duration of the game format. We finished the day with 3 draws and 5 losses and a final place standing of 7th out of 9.
Congratulations to the boys who demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and a positive attitude throughout the day despite results not going our way. They showed a willingness to learn and were great at taking feedback onto the field to improve and play as a team. While we had an abundance of athletic talent we did not have a lot of touch football experience, to their credit they played in different positions and adapted to this without any fuss or questions. A pleasure to coach, John Therry is proud of the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field, well done!
Results:
Round 1) 3-0 loss vs CCCHS
Round 2) 2-2 draw JTCC
Round 3) 2-2 draw SJCHS
Round 4) 4-0 loss HSC
Round 5) 1-1 draw SBC
Round 6) 4-1 loss ERC
Round 7) 3-2 loss MCC
Round 8) 6-0 loss SJCHS

Open Boys - Results:
Round 1: 5-0 Win vs St Benedicts
Round 2: 1-0 Win vs Magdalene
Round 3: 3-0 Loss vs Corpus Christi
Round 4: 6-3 Win vs St Johns
Round 5: 3-0 Loss vs Holy Spirit
Round 6: 2-2 Draw vs Edmund Rice
Round 7: 7-0 Win vs Mt Carmel
Round 8: 4-1 Win vs St Josephs
Overall Finish: Equal Third.
I was fortunate enough to be able to coach the Open Boys Touch team for 2023. Having spent time coaching a lot of these young athletes over the years it was very rewarding to see them consistently develop their touch skills and understanding of the game. Overall the boys finished in equal third place which was an outstanding result for John Therry. Only losing two games all day was a fantastic achievement and evidence that John Therry has some excellent athletes.
A strong start to the day provided some confidence before facing Corpus and Holy Spirit. Both of these schools have a plethora of great touch players, despite this our boys were able to match it with them and stay competitive throughout the entire game. Our reward would come later in the day with a gritty and well earned 2-2 draw against a strong Edmund Rice. With Edmund Rice having possession of the ball for the last 5 minutes, JT were able to hold their own and deny them multiple try scoring opportunities. We witnessed some great defensive efforts from Jerome, Luke, Riley and Matt to prevent them from taking the lead.
Our team was exceptionally led by Mr John Therry himself Luke Denniss. Luke was a staple in the middle of the field and was able to provide consistent drives and defensive efforts all day. He was able to make our quicker, explosive players Riley, Noah and Coby look good all day. Our left edge was very dominant all day, enabling Coby Hilton to show teams why he is the fastest man in the Diocesan. Overall the boys played some great touch and should be proud of their efforts. We also had the luxury of blooding some Year 10 students into the team, which will benefit us for the next 2 years.
At the conclusion of the carnival we had Luke Denniss, Riley Oitmann and Noah McKenzie selected into the Wollongong Diocesan team.
Thank you for a great day.

U13 Girls - For many of the girls in the team this was their first opportunity to represent John Therry. The girls tried their very best all day and although we did not come away with a win on the day, we remained competitive in all our matches. The team crossed the line in every game which demonstrated their JT pride and determination throughout the entire day. It was a great learning experience for all the girls and hope to see them all back for the next competition.

Congratulations to those students who represented John Therry this week in MISA and also in Diocesan Tennis Teams. Those students who missed out, there are many future opportunities to represent JTCC, keep an eye out on the Sport Bulletin Board in the A-block corridor and on the Compass Newsfeed.
A few reminders regarding Sport:
Students should not be signed out of school before sport unless for a medical or family emergency. If you are signing your son/daughter out from school, a reminder to please follow school procedure by physically signing them out via the front office.
Students who are injured/unable to participate in sport need to provide a medical certificate/note to the Sports Coordinator. These students also need to have a conversation with the Coordinator regarding future sport options.
The behaviour and participation from the majority was great so thank you for making a positive start to the 2023 Sporting Year.

10-12 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Lost 59-43 Mt Carmel |
It was a do or die game for the JT Senior boys as we are getting to the end of the competition and are currently sitting in the middle of the table. Our training session identified that we struggle to get through our offensive sets in the beginning of games, which allows all players the chance to touch the ball and look for the best shots. We started slow but eventually got into a good rhythm. Our defense was our foundation and we created some fast break opportunities from our efforts. It was 28 -28 at the main break, and the team was instructed to keep moving the ball and be patient on offense while maintaining our defensive efforts. We immediately lapsed and Mt Carmel extended their lead after making four 3 pointers and several inside plays. We scored 10 points to bring us within 5 at the 3rd quarter break. The boys knew what was needed but failed to stop the bleeding and soon Mt Carmel extended their lead to win 59-43. Some poor individual and team choices on offense led to our demise and hopefully pointed out that “me” basketball is not the best option in most team games. MVP: Adrian Narvais - 9 points (4/6 shooting). |

A home game today in the heat (an outside match) caused the girls to struggle a little. They lacked motivation and hence didn't play as well as the last few weeks. With improved communication on the court and better serving by the girls this should hopefully come together for the next few games. A good effort to all today. MVP: Mary Camillerri |

10-12 GIRLS OZ TAG |
Won 7-3 vs MAS |
A “Perth” scorcher Tuesday arvo delivered the 10-12 girls Oztag a secure win. The Clovers proved too good with the tries from Chelsea, Grace, Ella, Bridget, Mia and Veronica helping to seal the game. A strong first half ended in 4-2, however an even stronger second half ended the game in a 7-3 win. Well done girls. MVP- Grace O’Reilly |
MR MCGRATH |
10-12 BOYS OZ TAG |
Won 7-6 vs MAS |
Some very tough weather conditions today out at Kirkham with 30 degree heat. A few players down made it hard for those playing in the middle, limiting their break times. We made it hard for ourselves early, going into the second third down and lacking confidence and energy. We were down to 7 players and still managed to grind our way to a victory. Well done. MVP: Matt Maytom |
MRS BULGER |
7-9 GIRLS HOCKEY |
0-0 Draw vs OPAC |
The 7-9 Girls Hockey team improves every week. They are now a confident and dominant Team on the field. It was very nice to step back and watch the Team communicate, adjust positions as needed and encourage each other with great enthusiasm. Each player contributed in some way to ensure the ball remained in our offensive end. Jaswyn had three great attempts at a goal throughout the game but was unfortunately unsuccessful. Congratulations to Alice, Eryn and Paige for stopping the other teams attempt at goal, they were outnumbered in defense but capably defended OPAC shot at goal and brought the ball back to our goal end. MVP goes to Layla Davidson who has worked hard each week. Layla is a key player who confidently and quickly brings the ball down through our midfield. Layla made many intercepts and tackles she was impressive to watch. Congratulations to the whole team. Looking forward to our next game. MVP- Layla Davidson |
MR GERIBO |
7-9 GIRLS IND CRICKET |
Loss 81-4 vs Magdalene |
After rising for our first win last week we were quickly on the downhill as Magdalene scored 81 after being sent into bat. They also managed to get 7 wickets in the first four overs meaning we were on -20 with just two skins to go. Jade and Elyse, followed by Maddie and Ella, batted well, meaning we were able to finish with a positive score. MVP: Elyse Stonebridge |
MR CHAPMAN |
7-9 BOYS SOFTBALL |
Loss 9-3 vs Magdalene |
JT played Magdalene and we started strong with our first three batters all getting runs. After that, however, we struggled for the rest of the game. Our fielding was not up to standard and we have too many chances to the opposition batters. A game to forget and we look forward to getting back on the park next week to put in an improved performance. MVP: Kaiden Myers |

10-12 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Won 60 - 37 vs Thomas Hassel AC |
This weeks game was a must win for the Open Boys if they were to secure a top four position leading into semi finals weeks. The boys have learnt some hard truths over the past few weeks and it was evident today that they are willing to listen and learn from their mistakes. We started with a smaller unit thos week with the emphasis to get out and run the fast break, whilst applying a full court press. We had immediate dividends with several turnovers leading to some fast break points. The boys are to be commended for their ball movement on offense this week, which showed by several new scorers. The team shot 24/53 from the field led by by Lleyton Turner 22 points (8/15 FG, 4/8 3 ptr) and Adrian Narvais 13 points (6/14 FG). Defense won the game with several key steals and blocks by Garang Bol and one massive block against the backboard by Adam Bell. Will need to wait for a points update but we should be able to secure a favourable semi final position. MVP: Lleyton Turner (22 points, 3 steals, 5 assists) |

38-31 LOSS to THAC |
Due to injuries and absences, John Therry played with only 5 players and were able to stay competitive with THAC. However, due to the fatigue and the constant assault from THAC - they could not hold on for much longer. Overall, the girls played well and kept the difference in scores under double digits. Loss 9-2 vs MAG |
Unlucky today as we did not come out with the result we wanted. But in saying that the efforts from the girls were outstanding. Veronika busted through the line and sprinted the field for our opening try. Bridget also strode through the line late in the game to lift the spirits of the team. The girls' efforts today were unmatched even with the score being 9-2 they continued their effort throughout the whole game. Not to mention the amazing fill ins for the girls who were absent. Really great team effort today. MVP: Gabbie Sloan |
MR MCGRATH |
10-12 BOYS OZ TAG |
WIN 8-6 vs MAG |
An important win in round 5 spelled an undefeated regular season for JT. The boys started strong with some slick work in the middle which allowed some nice tries out wide for Matt and Noah. After the halftime break, JT started well with big energy plays from Riley and Marshall. A lot of silly errors in the wet conditions let Magdalene claw their way back into the contest. An intense finish saw each team go try for try, however JT pulled away with a 8-6 win. MVP: Riley Oitmann |
MRS BULGER (Winter) |
7-9 GIRLS HOCKEY |
Loss 3-0 vs St Benedicts |
Today, the year 7-9 Girls Hockey team came up against an experienced St. Benedict’s hockey squad. Our JTCC Girls, put up a great defensive effort, opposing a relentless St Benedict’s attack and we were able to prevent 3 shots on target in the first 5 minutes. Credit to our backline led by Alice Stephenson for preventing any more potential goals and putting pressure on shots against our goals. With the majority of the game being played on the defence, the girls should be proud of keeping the final score to a 3-0 loss. MVP - Alice Stephenson |
MR GERIBO |
7-9 GIRLS IND CRICKET |
Loss 103-45 vs MAS |
The Year 7/9 girls' indoor cricket team played an exciting match but unfortunately lost. Megumi and Chelsea scored the most runs for their team. Despite facing tough opponents, the team fought hard and showed great sportsmanship. The match was a great display of indoor cricket, and the Year 7/9 girls' team can take many positives from their performance. MVP: Chelsea Bond |

5-2 LOSS vs MCCC |
JT came up against MCCC and batted first. MC had a representative level pitcher and restricted us to just two first innings runs. In the field we competed with enthusiasm, however, MC were just too good on the day. Neither team managed to score any second innings runs. MVP: Boston Melville |
2023 John Therry Swimming Carnival
The 43rd John Therry Catholic College Swimming Carnival was held on Friday 3rd March at Gordon Fetterplace Aquatic Centre.
The weather forecast was ominous with rain expected throughout the day with overcast skies. Well, we received the opposite. Hot, humid and fantastic weather was delivered on the day which allowed just over 500 students the opportunity to swim or participate in the novelty events. Student participation numbers in each event are on the rise, but still need to be better if each House is to benefit from student attendance.
If students weren’t in the water, they were at the volleyball court or in the indoor pool engaging in Year Group activities. Again, participation numbers could be better if more students were engaged in activities.
The competitive swimmers started the days action in the 200 IM and 100m freestyle. Congratulations to our winners:

EXTERNAL SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT -
The College was recently informed of two outstanding sporting achievements this week. I received notification from the “Wanderers Australia” Sports Association of two talented young ladies being identified for a fantastic opportunity. Tess McEvoy-King and Fanaafi Fauese were recently selected to the Australian Junior Girls Rugby Team to tour France and England in December 2023. This is a massive opportunity for the girls to receive gameplay and coaching by the Australian Schoolgirls coaching staff and experience overseas competition.
If your child has had an outstanding high level, sporting achievement outside of school, we would love to hear from you. Please email me so we can celebrate their achievements with the JTCC community.
