ARCHBISHOP WILSON
Many would know Archbishop Phillip Wilson who was the third Bishop of Wollongong. At present he is undergoing five weeks of intensive medical treatment for a serious illness. Your prayers would be welcome. He will continue to live in the Archbishop’s House in Adelaide during this time.
YEAR 11 and 12 P/T/S INTERVIEWS
Next Monday afternoon from 3.30 – 7.30pm the school is providing a significant opportunity for students of Yr 11 and 12 to focus on their learning. As educators we know that for many students these years generate stress as the students strive to do their best in their studies.
One significant way to reduce and mange this stress is to attend these interviews and work with the class teacher. The interview should be in two halves. The first a picture of what is, how the student is going now. The second is advice and discussion about a way forward. Armed with a roadmap for the future in their studies, stress is relieved and progress can be the focus.
I encourage every senior student to attend this event. Even if you have not made formal interview times please attend.
Monday 27th May
Afternoon Session: 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Staff dinner break 5.30pm – 6.00pm (no interviews during this time)
Evening Session 6.00pm – 7.30pm
These interviews are held as a follow up to the Year 11 Term 1 Progress Reports and 12 Half Yearly Reports.
The interviews are an ideal opportunity to allow you to receive information about your child’s progress this year and to receive advice on how they can improve further throughout the 2019 academic year.
The booking of interviews is an online process. We hope that this makes it easier for parents to make interviews with teachers as you can see immediately when teachers are free and make interviews at times that are convenient for you, rather than relying upon interviews to be booked at school. Students, if required, can also book in the interviews while at school using the internet resources at John Therry.
The process for booking interviews is as follows:
Login to Sentral using the Parent Portal.
https://sentral.jtchsdow.catholic.edu.au/portal/login
Click on the link to Parent Teacher Night. Beside each class will be a button to allocate a time for the interview.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school.
We look forward to working with you in assisting your child to achieve their personal best in their learning.
Please support your child in their education by making attendance at this night a priority.
Students should attend in full Winter Uniform.
Please talk to those you know with children in Yr 6 and remind them the enrolment period for 2020 has officially closed. Late enrolments from students in feeder schools are a reality. Please urge them to apply ASAP.
Tickets can be purchased from the Finance Office

10-12 Boys Softball |
Mr Bodeker |
Won 11-4 |
A whole team effort this week enabled us to play our best game of the season. We defeated the previously undefeated Mt Carmel side 11-4. Despite a shaky start, the boys regained their composure and were able to come away comprehensive winners. Well done Boys. MVP - Morgan McPhee |
10-12 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Mr Geribo |
Won 80-68 |
We started off fielding and restricted them to a low score. It wasn’t our best batting performance today, as we lost 7 wickets, but each pair managed to get a respectable score, all contributing to us winning. MVP: Deborah Madriaga |
Soccer Boys 11-12 |
Mr Williamson |
Lost 2-0 |
Lack of urgency at the start of the game saw us go in 1 behind early. Despite several good chances we couldn’t convert. The heat and a lack of physical condition cost us. Good effort to try and catch up. A game we could have won. MVP: Joshua Anderson |
10-12 Soccer Girls |
Mr Holmes |
Lost 11-0 |
The girls played with good spirit practicing their tackles, interception and defensive structure. Only 9 players available to play made it a difficult task. Hopefully more players will recover from sickness and injury for next week. MVP: Arech Nyarnhom |
Netball Girls 11-12 |
Mrs Pellegrino |
Lost 37-8 |
A hard defeat but the team kept their heads up and kept the pressure on. Working on their positioning across the court, the girls have made a great improvement, just not enough to defeat MTC. MVP. Jade Pritchard |
Mixed Frisbee 7-9 |
Mr Wakeling |
Won 41-1 |
A great start gave us a commanding lead that everyone continued to build on. A great defensive effort enabled plenty of turnover attacking options. Skill execution was of an all time high with plenty of great catches. MVP: William Craig |
7-9 Basketball Boys |
Mr Peters |
Won 33-16 |
Tough and hard encounter played outside, Dominating the key was the basic of the win, there the forwards were furious in defence. MVP: Goc Malual |
7-9 Basketball Girls |
Miss Randall |
Lost 15-13 |
An extremely slow start which ultimately cost us the game. The girls had a fantastic 2nd half, but the timer beat us in the end. The girls need to work on their offence going into next week. MVP: Allanda Lumagui |
7-9 Hockey Boys |
Mr Webb |
Lost 3-0 |
We tried our best and were unfortunate to lose. A great all round effort from all team members. Mount Carmel were a very talented team but we challenged them throughout the match. We struggled to get the ball through the oppositions midfield and in behind their defence. Our defence struggled against Mount Carmel’s attack. A great effort boys and lets have a positive mindset going into the next match and win. MVP: Thomas Augustine |

SPORT NEWS TERM 2- WEEK 2
After a great start to MISA term 2 with John Therry picking up 15 out of a possible 20 victories we faced tough competition in Mount Carmel today. On a sunny 27 degree Autumn day, John Therry was victorious in 4 matches and unfortunately went down in our other five matches. The girls basketball team were very unlucky to lose, finishing strongly but just falling short. Perhaps some training/ player recruitment could help boost our finals chances.
With limited players in our 11-12 girls Netball team, and senior girls soccer team (year 10-12). I am asking for our senior girls to step up. Any interested players please email Mr Goodhew or visit the sports office to discuss.
Numbers in detention are also still too high, reminder to bring your hats for sport and ensure you read your emails and daily notices regarding buses.
FREE INDOOR CRICKET COACHING CLINIC (under 10’s and 12’s)
Please see the flyer attached for information regarding a free coaching clinic for indoor cricket. The Centre has also ensured under 13’s will be allowed to participate. This could be good for any of our Year 7 students or for families with younger children interested in cricket.
GOOD LUCK
Rugby League:
Three of our John Therry boys will be representing the Southern Country team in just over a week. This gives the boys an opportunity to make the NSW team.

Olivia Southby- 4th

PICTON teenage gymnast Chelsea Palmer has dazzled at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi and returned with a mammoth five-medal haul.
The 17-year-old, who has an intellectual disability, was crowned second overall in level two artistic gymnastics, as well as picking up silver and bronze medals in vault, floor, beam and bars.
Mum Melissa Palmer said Chelsea, this week’s Macarthur Chronicle Local Sports Star Inspiration Award nominee, never expected to achieve so much success on an international stage.
“Chelsea went to a national Special Olympics Games when she was 12 or 13, but she was too young to go to the worlds,” she said.
“Her dream from then was to go to the next Special Olympics World Games and she actually got to experience her dream. She was just over the moon that she was actually chosen to go over. She was beside herself.”
Palmer, a Year 12 student at John Therry High School and gymnastics coach at PCYC Minto, braved a last minute injury scare to compete at the games.
“She actually hurt herself before she went overseas, a ligament in her shoulder and dislocated it,” Melissa Palmer said. “She just strapped herself up and off she went.”
Chelsea Palmer has now set her sights on the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Germany.
