The first full week of the school year is over and it is amazing how quickly we return to routine. The holidays, New Year and Christmas period are fading into memories. For the students the excitement of new adventures and challenges that lie ahead become engaging.
At our High Achievers Assembly yesterday, I invited the students to – BUILD upon what we have achieved at John Therry. We have a wonderful community, pastoral care system, teaching Staff and close ties to the Marist Brothers’.
Both academically and on the sporting field we have champions. So the challenge is not to sit back and enjoy what has been built by those that have gone before us, but more importantly to BUILD upon it and take the school, and the students development and achievement levels, to new heights.
This is not a simple measure generated by the analysis of each years HSC results – although these are the results that receive most coverage through the press. Our performance in the NAPLAN testing in both Year 7 and Year 9 are equally as important and during this year we will be challenging the students to take a greater ownership of their own learning and the Staff will be working with them in performing to their best. LEARN time each morning will become an important part of this and I ask that you discuss with your son/daughter each day exactly how they used this time.
In conversation with Staff we can see an increased commitment to quality of assignments and effort in presenting work samples. This is a very positive sign.
So as we move into this exciting year of BUILDING I encourage all parents to be active in the learning life of your child. Ask questions, offer support, explore options and do not be daunted if you do not know the answers – as I experienced with my own children. You need to persevere for their benefit.
HIGH ACHIEVERS ASSEMBLY
What a wonderful celebration of the effort and persistence of the Yr 12 students and their success. A Year group of 106 students with 80 seeking an ATAR, achieved a total of 36 Band 6's.
This included a total of 8 students with scores over 90.00 – or 12.9% of the 62 students seeking University admission. The school ranking improved from 448 in 2019 to 218 this year. Across all examinations 7.6% were converted to Band 6 results, up from 1.9% last year.
We celebrate our College Dux, Olivia Mesa who achieved a personal score of 97.90 and five subjects with Band 6's.
We also recognise Luca Sannio who achieved a fourth place in the state in his Automotive VET course.
Several students had their major works nominated and recognised - Visual Arts Morgan McPhee, Aaron Crispino, Logan Harber-Kerr and Hollie Cunningham. Morgan and Logan having their works selected in Art Express. Olivia Mesa was also selected in OnStage for her drama work.
In a year where we had covid interruptions and the loss of a classmate that impacted all, the resilience of this group of young people has been amazing.
Olivia Mesa – 97.90 Morgan McPhee – 96.65
Joshua Innes – 94.85 Sophia Wolczak – 94.40
Giselle Levine – 92.30 Kyle Kalabric – 90.10
Chloe Kerswell – 90.60 Amith Jacob-Kavoor – 91.05
CELEBRATING LEARNING AND SUCCESS
Each year, the John Therry community celebrates the hard work, dedication and achievements of our HSC students. On Thursday, 4th February, we invited our 2020 distinguished achievers to a College assembly to acknowledge their diligence and success. Olivia Mesa, our DUX for 2020, thanked her teachers, friends and family for their support as well as offered students advice about overcoming the inevitable obstacles in life highlighting the three things that kept her on track and led her to where she is today- hard and efficient work, kindness and gratitude. Olivia ended her speech with the following:
‘Work hard and humbly, know that nothing is ever achieved alone, be kind to others but more importantly, be kind to yourself, set goals, take pride in all that you do, and be grateful. Remember that, and everything else follows’.
Science Teachers’ Association - Young Scientist Award
As a school community, we acknowledged the great work of Hussain Alwaeli & Anthony Dellis (Year 12) for their work in Science Extension and for being acknowledged by the Science Teachers’ Association with a ‘Distinction’ for their entries and to Riley Tonna (Year 12) for winning the Bronze Young Scientist Award.
Outstanding Service to the Community Award
This award from the office of Dr M. Freelander acknowledges 'students who have gone above and beyond to support their peers’. This year, the award went to Thomas Dywer and Shontay McClymont Lucas for their kindness and thoughtfulness towards other students.
All in all, a wonderful day of celebration!
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
Welcome to what is going to be another great year of learning at John Therry Catholic College. I hope everyone had a happy holiday and that all of us are looking forward to a settled start to the school year.
Term 1 is always a unique one - a blend of familiar and new.
Old friends as well as new ones! I take this opportunity to welcome all our Year 7 students as well as students who have enrolled in Years 8-11, this year. I hope you have a smooth start to the year and enjoy every minute of your learning experience. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, if you need it.
Old classrooms as well as new ones! As students walk around the school, you will notice improvements to the school environment. You will notice your classrooms are neat and clean with additional posters directing you to classroom procedures for your lessons. We hope this will help you stay focussed and find relevance in what you learn.
By week 3, all students will receive an Assessment Handbook, Assessment calendar and Assessment schedule (HSC students will receive the Assessment dates for tasks in Terms 1, 2 & 3). This information will also be available via email and on the school website. While teachers will draw students’ attention to various sections of these documents from time to time, I suggest you read the Handbook and make a note of the Assessment dates/weeks so everyone is well - prepared for these tasks and a true measure of learning is made possible.
On the 4th February, we celebrated the achievements of our HSC 2020 students and what a celebration it was! Not only have students had great success in their chosen courses but 6 of our students had outstanding achievements in specific courses:
- 4 students in Visual Arts - Morgan McPhee, Aaron Crispino, Hollie Cummingham & Logan Harber Kerr
- 1 in Drama - Olivia Mesa
- 1 in Automotives (Mechanical Technology)
In addition, Eryn Douglas is 1 of 5 students to be accepted into the prestigious NAIDA to pursue a pathway of study in Drama.
We are so proud of the achievements of our students and look forward to celebrating the success of our students in 2021 and beyond.
In 2020, our School assemblies highlighted the great work being done in the different faculties and we will continue to do so this year. I look forward to having the Hall stage overflowing with students who will be recognised for their hard work and success in learning.
Once again, I welcome you to an exciting year of learning at JT. We are always available to answer any queries you may have.

A reminder that our key communication tool is Compass. This is used for a wide variety of purposes, including accessing student attendance information, school reports, student timetables and positive and negative incidents in the classroom. Parents can update their details in the compass app and provide permission for events. At present, we require the sport permission event in compass to be responded to as soon as possible to avoid having students miss out on sport next week.
The link below provides a simple overview of compass for parents, and all parents who have not logged in yet should have received an email from the school today with their login details.
