Please monitor your compass app and email for updates on how John Therry is managing the coronavirus situation. We will send out a detailed update shortly but want to assure parents that we are following all Government Health and Education guidelines at the school level. This includes cancelling excursions, cancelling large gatherings including our school assemblies, and cancelling off site sport activities where there are other community groups, amongst other measures.
Things are changing quickly and we are preparing for the possibility of school closure if this decision is made by the Government. Our priority will be trying to ensure students can continue with their studies at home and supporting staff and students if this eventuates. We appreciate these are challenging times and we will working to minimise the impact on our school community as much as we can.
INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY – So Wonderful and so sad
I grew up in Blacktown, Doonside actually. It was a tough but wonderful life full of sport, mates, family and life. We didn’t have a lot living in a war service home –similar to todays Housing Commission. You also got lots of bruises in Doonside, but you didn’t cry. That wasn’t accepted.
Last Monday I sat at home and cried, more seeping but still very emotional. I was watching the funeral of Hannah Clark and her three children, Laianah, Aaliyah and Trey,as a result of domestic violence (DV) by her estranged husband in a Brisbane suburb. I could not fathom how that could happen. What feelings and thoughts could lead to this sort of action.
What really hit me was the fantastic event we had the day before on International Women’s Day where 86,000 people attended the Women’s World Cup T20 in Melbourne, the AFLW had stellar games and this all followed a brilliant year by the women’s soccer team, the Matilda’s.
IWD asks men and women to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements - not only for one day, but every day.
It was such a confronting contrast. In a country like Australia how do these things happen? Why does God let them happen? I don’t think that God can stop them, but only make the aftermath bearable. God is there to console us and comfort us.
Sadly at John Therry we have some students who have lived in homes or witnessed DV in their lives. Such unacceptable acts can damage young children and their understanding of what a family life should look like. We work closely with all of our students to provide an environment that sustains growth in learning and character.
One of the hardest aspects of DV is knowing someone who is going through it and having them ask us not to interfere. I don’t think it is an option, we need to save lives and act. If you of anyone is a situation that needs assistance please use the resources below.

JOHN THERRY OPEN DAY – 2020
What a wonderful occasion it was last Saturday as we had over 650 people fill the College Hall at the Open Day. The vast majority of people were in Year 6 (with their families) and finishing their Primary School education and looking at alternatives and options for Year 7, 2021.
Tours of the College grounds included all specialist areas with the Science Block experiments and the ice creams and pancakes at Food Tech the highlight for most.
A further opportunity will be provided later in Term 1 for those who have contacted the College Office and indicated they were not able to attend.
OPEN DAY AFTERNOON CATCH UP OPPORTUNITY.
A number of parents have made inquiries through the Front Office about viewing the College as they were unable to attend the Saturday Open Day. So the school will be open for visitors on Wednesday 25thMarch from 5.00 – 6.00pm. Spread the word and come along.
PARENT DROP OFF AND PICKUP - AVOID THE BUS BAY
We have had a number of parents using the school bus bay for drop off and pick up. Please note that this is not to be used by cars as it is a safety hazard with the new pedestrian crossing and large vehicles obscuring vision.
“It’s easy to have faith when everything is working out. It’s much harder to have faith when you are facing challenges in your life but that’s exactly when you need to apply it.” Dominic Augoustis –
John Therry is a diverse learning community and last year, 173 students chose their own path to complete Year 12. Whether our students selected an ATAR or non ATAR, each student’s journey was unique. Their chosen learning path played to their strengths. It engaged their interest and passion to help them succeed.
A common theme among most of our students was the resilience and determination shown throughout their learning journey. We commend the grit that many of them drew upon to make significant and impressive progress throughout their time at John Therry. We are delighted to congratulate two of our 2019 graduates who did us very proud, Amelia Melville & Erin LaRue.
Every student who achieves a band 6 in any subject, but in particular within Advanced English, shares the same important qualities; dedication, a willingness to take on board feedback and resilience. This idea was reflected in Amelia as she was constantly and consistently applying herself to her studies. She submitted work to be marked and did not get discouraged when that work needed further revision and refinement. This is a testament to this young lady who helped establish a tone and set an example for the rest of the class to aspire to. “I worked really
hard, I spent weeks on end re-reading all my texts, doing practice essays, practice essay structures until HSC, and I achieved a band 6.” In her Dux speech she quoted her teacher, Mr Conway, “the HSC rewards hard work and consistency”, and she believed it had worked for her. Amelia aspires to continue her education with a Degree in Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of International Studies at the University of Sydney.
Erin Larue (HSC Standard English Band 6)
Erin has made us proud by achieving a place in the NSW Top Achievers' merit list in English Standard and thus breaking the myth that getting a top Band 6 in English Standard, is next to impossible. A Distinguished Achiever in the State, Erin stood 11th in the HSC Standard English Course in all NSW and achieved the highest band 6 possible. An avid reader and a creative thinker, Erin has made this journey to the top with her hard work and commitment towards English. She aspires to continue a degree in Bachelor of Architecture and Environments at the University of Sydney.
On behalf of the English Faculty, I take this opportunity to congratulate and thank both our students for being such great role models. I would also like to acknowledge and give thanks to the outstanding commitment of staff and the tireless support of parents during their childrens’ learning journey. These inspiring individuals have shown a deep understanding of the knowledge and skills required for the examinations, which indicates effective teaching and learning. Creativity and imagination was demonstrated across their work and each student should be very proud of their efforts.
I wish all our students all the best as they embark on their chosen pathways.

ARTEXPRESS EXCURSION 2020
On Thursday March 5th, sitting in the front four rows of the auditorium at the Art Gallery of NSW, all four Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts classes attended the Artexpress ‘From the classroom to the Gallery’ study morning, amongst the very best schools in the state. Four Artexpress students gave talks about their bodies of work.
‘Artexpress’ is an exhibition of the very best practical artworks from Visual Arts students from across the state. After the talk, our students were the only school to ask the Artexpress students presenters, questions on how to work smarter to improve their marks. Our school has had twenty two Visual Arts students nominated for Artexpress over the last ten years, the most in our region in that time.
After the Study morning, the classes investigated different parts of the gallery to reinforce content covered in class; Year 11 investigated historical Western Art, while Year 12 examined the Contemporary exhibition spaces. On behalf of Mrs. Hume and myself (Year 11 and 12 teachers), we congratulate our students’ behavior and positive contribution on the day, which was exemplary. Thank you also to Mrs. O’Brien who did a marvelous job assisting with all students on the day.
Mr. Stephen Peters

10-12 Boys Basketball |
Mr Peters |
WIN 77-35 |
Excellent effort and execution both on offense and defense. Improved + 19 points from our previous game versus MAG. Everyone contributed to scoring. Much better defensive intensity, trying a few different defensive alignments. MVP: Eli Matic (15 points) |
10-12 Girls Basketball |
Mr Humbles |
Win 53-8 |
It's often hard to play your best when the opposition don't take the game too seriously. There were some glimpses of good performances mixed in with some laughs as we took on Magdalene Catholic College. Shontay McClymont-Lucas and Ash Ballard were energetic while amongst the laughs, Tara Hodson managed to drop five 3 pointers as we ran away with a big win 53 - 8. This results means we end the regular rounds undefeated and head into semi-finals next week. MVP: Nikita Maika-Teal |
7-9 Boys Volleyball |
Mr Williamson |
Draw 2-2 |
JT started very well but didn’t match the sudden improvement in the Magdalene team. Played into their hands with a lack of teamwork and poor shot execution. Did well to scrape back into the game and finish on a draw. MVP: Tayvion Zaglas |
7-9 Girls Volleyball |
Mrs Pellegrino |
Win 3-2 |
A close competitive game against Magdalene. After losing the first set by 2 points, the girls focused on their game play and took control of the second set, setting up awesome ‘dig-set-spike’ tactics. Winning the second set, the girls may have become a little too comfortable with Magdalene dominating the third set with more than 15 of their points coming from JT errors. However, the girls brought the game home winning the final two sets and dominating the court. A shout out to Lily Short for her phenomenal serving streaks. MVP: Lily Short |
10-12 Girls Oztag |
Mr Tran |
Win 5-3 |
It was a tough fought game. Credit to the ladies for sticking it out through some ups and downs. Kept to our structure and what we talked about. Looking forward to improving next week. MVP - Shanae-Lee Leech-Morrison |
10-12 Boys Oztag |
Mr McGrath |
Win 9-3 |
Minimal talk in the first half saw us start slow against a determined Magdalene side. An increase in energy and talk in the middle saw us come away with a great win. MVP - Braiden Timmer
|
7-9 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Mr Geribo |
Loss 49-91 |
John Therry took on Magdalene, who lost the toss and were sent in to bat. The Magdalene team bowled and fielded well, making it difficult to score. Our bowling was alright, not quite up to scratch though, which allowed them to score lots of 1 and 2’s, quickly accumulating a solid 91.

7-9 Boys Softball |
Mrs. Stanley |
Win 4-1 |
A great start to the game today with a strong first innings. It was out best fielding effort, with displays of excellent teamwork and impressive pitching from Mason McPhee. We had a few unlucky umpire calls in the second innings, but the boys held their composure showing great sportsmanship and were able to come away with the win. An entertaining game to watch! MVP: Brendan Thomas - fantastic effort in catcher. |
7-9 Girls Hockey |
Mr Chapman |
Loss 0-4 |
A tough game against a very strong Magdalene team. The girls are improving every week and are enjoying themselves on the field. Grace had an outstanding game and came close to scoring on multiple occasions. MVP: Grace Tutunoa |
