DON SPENCER RETIRES
On Wednesday I attended a retirement Mass for Mr Don Spencer. Don is the current Principal of Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School, Eaglevale, where many of our students come from. It was a wonderful and fitting event full of celebration and story, and some tears. Don’s career spanned 39 years and 33 in the Wollongong Diocese where he was Principal of four schools.
I mention this event because of the John Therry students who may have attended Eaglevale in the last 8 years and because of the wider contribution to Catholic education that has been made by this man.
So I ask - how do we celebrate a contribution like Don’s or someone else who dedicates themselves to the Church in other ways. In my own Parish there are many people who volunteer in so many ways - to maintain the premises, clean the church, set up for special events and seasons and the like. They are wonderful people who enrich my Church experience.
How soon are they forgotten, what legacy do they leave? Who steps up after them in today’s world? Most of these people are unselfish and humble in nature, happy to contribute to the greater cause. This is so very COUNTERCULTURAL to the current inward looking generation of younger people. Where life is lived falsely on social media where we only post the ‘good’ parts of our lives and discreetly or conveniently cover other areas.
We all know that there will be difficult times ahead for us all. Resilience and capacity to bounce back is developed over time and all who succeed in life seem to find it.
On Tuesday 10th September John Therry hosted a Parent Tech Talk centred around 2 main topics:
- Sentral Parent Portal
- Google Classroom
The night was highly successful with parents receiving the opportunity to log into their child's Google Classroom to have a better understanding of how Google Classroom is used at John Therry. Parents were able to look at a "To Do List" as well as the current work in the classroom to help show the learning that is taking place in each subject.
With the positive feedback from all involved, I will be looking at hosting more of these events along with some answers to common questions (which will be discussed here in future newsletters) on topics and questions from the school community. If you have any questions on anything technology please email me at jefferysh01@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Mr Webb |
FINAL vs MCCC 12-2 Win |
After being undefeated for the entire season, the pressure was on the girls to deliver the trophy in the final. The girls batted first, coming out of the blocks fast. Some great hitting by the girls and running between the bases saw the team get 7 home. Emily and Shontay linked up well limiting Mount Carmel to one run in their first innings. The girls backed up their first innings with an extra two runs leaving an unattainable lead for MC to reach. The girls fielded well and closed out the game with some great play by Adut and Arech. A great way to finish off a great season. Well done girls! MVP: Arech Nyarnhom |

Mr Williamson |
JT (3rd) vs St Benedicts (4th) 28-108 Loss |
A tough Challenge with half of our team missing. Well done to the students who stepped in at short notice. Unfortunately the lack of experience counted against us. MVP: Joshua Anderson |
Soccer Boys 7-8 |
Mr Wakeling |
FINAL vs MCCC 2-0 Win |
What a game! We handled the first 10 minutes of pressure, just. A few changes and we lifted the intensity. Some good passing and we earnt a penalty that we converted. A strong second half with a lot of intensity and a fantastic goal by Lleyton Turner sealed the win. MVP: Kayd Sumners |
Soccer Boys 9-10 |
Mr Holmes |
FINAL vs MAG *4-0 loss |
Unfortunately no posts at the venue- friendly match played. Poor performance this week on a field consisting of plastic poles for goals and no outline. Regardless of conditions the boys will need to step up next week in the interzone finals. MVP: Ari Vasilopoulos |
Soccer Girls 7-9 |
Mrs Geribo |
3rd (St Pats) Vs 4th (JT) *4-0 loss |
Unfortunately no posts at the venue- friendly match played. Our girls put in a solid effort despite being down on players. Fatigue and weight of numbers got the better of us in the second half. Overall, it was a mixed season and we look forward to an improved and more successful 2020. MVP: Annalise Hodson |
AFL Boys 10-12 |
Mr Bodeker |
FINAL Vs MCCC Loss 26-14 |
Unfortunately the boys went down in a tight contest that was hotly contested up until the final whistle. We pushed hard in the second half but unfortunately just fell short despite kicking the last few goals. It’s been a great season and the boys should be proud of how far they have come. Plenty of potential to go one better next season. Thanks for the season boys! MVP - Braydon Wickey and Garry Smith |
AFL Girls 10-12 |
Miss Leach |
FINAL vs MCC 28-18 Win |
JT girls continued their dominance into the grand final. Solid tackles and utilising our speed through the midfield helped keep Mt Carmel at bay. Girls played really well and were good sports! MVP: Jess Whelan/ Jenna Steele/ Nikita Maika-Teal |

On Wednesday the 11th of September 2019, 32 students from the Macarthur District competed in the annual MISA Golf Tournament. The tournament was held at the Camden Lakeside course and the weather was ideal for golf (24 degrees with no wind).
The two events on the day were the MISA Cup, held for golfers with handicaps and the MISA Plate, for all of the student without handicaps. School were allowed to enter 3 students per category and it was great to see a number of players arrive for registration and instruction before 8:00am.
After the days play, our Cup competitors finished the total 18 holes, whilst our Senior plate students, completed 13 holes and our Junior plate competitors completed the first 11 holes in the given time. Student behaviour was excellent throughout the day.
Thank you to Mr Damian Hatton and for your guidance and expertise on and before the competition.
