NEW SCHOOL LEADERS FOR 2020
In schools we have two different slants on the commencement of the year. There is the calendar year that defines a move to another year of study, however, this only applies to the Junior School. In the senior school the year commences with Term 4 and concludes at the end of Term 3 the following year. This signals the end of formal lessons for the Year 12 students and the commencement of their final exams (HSC). This time also has a very significant milestone - and that is the changeover of student leaders within the school.
After a stringent process of nominations and voting that saw a group of fourteen emerge as the leaders for 2020, they had a day of intensive leadership activity to discern the School Captains. I am very proud to announce the student leaders at John Therry Catholic High School for 2020.

I also need to acknowledge the wonderful leadership of the 2019 school leaders. We are blessed at John Therry to have so many talented students.
BR ROBERT’S RETURN VISIT
On Thursday we had Br Robert return to John Therry from his current posting in Timor Leste (or East Timor). His work there had been in the Teachers College run by the Marist Brothers but is now in the Formation House, where he works with young men who are aspiring (aspirants) to become Marist Brothers.
At the Assembly he presented a short history of this very small country which is our nearest neighbor, and the aspirants were introduced and sang to the school in tetun, their native language. A tour of the school and new church had them amazed, as the resources in their own country are so poor. After lunch, one of the aspirants, Rogerio, commented that it was nice to have a meal that had no rice in it.

First and hopefully only loss of the season. Terrible start and a long way back from a first partnership of minus 20. Well done to Morgan Mcphee and Luke Kotsou to return us to positive numbers. Also a 3 wicket maiden over to Morgan. MVP: Luke Kotsou |
Soccer Boys 7-8 |
Mr Wakeling |
Draw 0-0 |
A very tough game in difficult circumstances. Multiple chances that were not taken throughout the match. Some great saves by Kayd Sumners. We nearly scored a goal but outstanding sportsmanship from Lucas Marks to stand up and inform the referee the ball had not crossed the line. MVP: Lacas Marks |
Soccer Boys 9-10 |
Mr Holmes |
Draw 0-0 |
First half was evenly matched, opportunities for both sides was limited. The wind caused the movement of the ball to be unpredictable, making it difficult to play simple passes to each other. Overall the boys should take this game as a learning curve to improve for next week. MVP: Jayden Cook |

A strong start from the boys set the tone for a comprehensive victory against Magdalene. We opened the scoring in the first minute and never looked like losing. Strong performances all over the park enabled our forwards to dominate and kick a plethora of goals. Well done boys! MVP - Damian Thomas |

Missing multiple starting players, the boys were off to a slow start with numerous errors. Great leadership however from Heneli and Evan put the team on the front foot and they never looked back. MVP. Evan Fisher |
Round four of the MISA competition brought fierce winds making games difficult for both teams (except indoor cricket). Overall, we had some good results as we work towards the final rounds of the competition with the highlight for me coming from the junior boys soccer game. It’s always great to hear about students playing well and winning matches but it makes me more proud to hear about displays of sportsmanship. Today, Lucas Marks (Year 8) produced an ‘Adam Gilchrist’ like moment during the game. Despite being able to take a one goal lead and potentially win the match, Lucas did what is ‘right and just’ and corrected the referee when he had wrongly awarded John Therry a goal. A remarkable display of integrity, well done Lucas.
A big thank you to those students that have volunteered to umpire/ referee at the PSSA (Primary school) Gala day from our local area. We had fantastic reports from our primary schools about the fantastic work of our year 7 and 8 volunteers. The next round of PSSA umpiring will occur on Friday in week 9.
Diocese Athletics
Thank you to all the participants who attended the Diocese carnival last Friday. We had fantastic weather making for ideal athletics conditions. The team had some good results throughout the day, but were lacking senior participants in some events with year 10 on camp, year 11’s absent and year 12 on Trial exams. Hopefully next year we can build on our results and have a full squad of athletes to participate in the events. Special thanks must go out to those year 10 student who left camp at 7:00am to attend the carnival (missing out on their final day of camp activities) a great effort!
Congratulations to Olivia Southby and Kynan Sparks who were successful in making the CCC Athletics team. Olivia was victorious in the 1500m race with a time of 5:03 seconds, further she was a runner up in the 400m race in a very tight contest. Kynan was lightning in the 100m and 200m races recording times of:
100m: 11.59 - 1st
200m: 24.53 - 2nd
Uniform reminder:
Whilst i’m extremely proud of the sportsmanship that John Therry students show on the sporting field each week, sport uniform need to be better.
Students, please ensure you are wearing your full sport uniform with no extra items of clothing. This includes hooded jumpers, incorrect socks, headphones and incorrect footwear. Normal jewellery rules also apply. School sport is a privilege and whilst I'm grateful to those students that continue to put their hands up to compete and do their best for the school, uniform needs to be better.
Otherwise, individuals will be left behind and teams will be withdrawn from future competitions.
On a more positive note we have a number of sporting opportunities coming up:
