A Hope-Filled approach
Genesis 1:3 reads, “Then God said: ‘Let there be light’, and there was light.” Term 1 is a time of new beginning and new hopes. This “light”, hope, or sense of promise has been evident through the days of Term 1 at John Therry. Through the ways students interact, speak honestly, support one another and set goals, they have stepped outside of themselves to share a sense of hope. Students will be encouraged throughout the year to define their goals and explore their strengths through our pastoral care and wellbeing program. Students across Years 7-12 will be participating in pastoral incursions through Term 2 and 3 where skills in identifying and using personal strengths and gifts will be explicitly taught. This work is an acknowledgement of our belief that learning and wellbeing are deeply connected. Through a hope-filled approach, we aim to encourage both academic growth and spiritual growth in order for students to experience the fullness of life.
Term 1 Concludes
Term One has ended well and students are commended for the dedication to learning they have demonstrated. Progress reports are available via Compass for students in Year 7-10, and follow up Parent Teacher Student Interviews were successful through Thursday evening and this morning. We welcome the opportunity to discuss learning progress, and encourage families to also have discussions about these most recent reports.
Clover, our wellbeing dog, is settled into her routine attending school on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Clover attends classes, has rest lessons and is out and about during recess and lunch breaks. She has been a wonderful addition to the John Therry community, and we look forward to watching her grow and build connections with staff and students.

YEAR 9 ELECTIVE CHINESE EXCURSION
Yr 9 chinese chinatown field trip (thursday 28 March 2024)
Last Thursday, the John Therry Catholic College Year 9 Chinese elective students spent the day in Sydney's Chinatown. We had the opportunity to pay a visit to two local venues in Chinatown, notably Spice alley and the Chinese Garden of Friendship. Spice alley was a replica of what many Asian and Singapore food alleyways would appear as. We came upon some amazing artworks displayed around the walls and flooring of the street, having stopped to take photos and have a stroll through the block.
Afterwards, we took a stroll around some of the bustling streets while taking in some of Sydney's most well-known skyscrapers and structures. We made the decision to explore the garden as soon as we got there. Seeing some of the breathtaking vistas and watching the koi fish being fed. Local water dragons inhabited most of the garden; some were sunbaking and devouring bugs along the path, whereas others were hiding on the rocks surrounding the pond. We took pictures of the garden settings that caught our eye after seeing the spectacular display of a traditional Chinese dragon portrayed next to the wishing well. I opted to take pictures of the waterfall myself, taking a few images of the scrubs and other vegetation around the garden.
Following our visit to the garden, we made our way through some of Chinatown's streets, observing the entrance gate with attention and taking in some of the eateries and stores in the area. We had a variety of traditional foods, such as dumplings, fried rice, and beef and pork noodles at the local Noodle House Restaurant for lunch. Following lunch, we took part in an incredible race of activities where we had to go through the streets and finish objectives that Mr. Bateman had given us. Suddenly it was time to catch the next train home!
In weeks 8 and 9 John Therry was thrilled to host the students of Seiun Gakuen school from Nagasaki, Japan for their Australian high school experience. The students of John Therry did a wonderful job making the Japanese students feel welcome and there was a dedicated group of 30 students who acted as buddies for the students on the days they were present at the College.
The Seiun Gakuen students had a fantastic time participating in school sport with the Years 7 and 8 students on the Tuesday afternoon, some experiencing Oztag and AFL for the very first time.
Friday afternoon saw the Japanese students participate in a cultural activity organised by Mrs Nau, with our Aboriginal students. The boys were introduced to the didgeridoo under the guidance of Tom, Tony C, Riley B and Angus R, and they made a good effort at trying to learn this difficult skill. The girls were taught the process of making soap, adding eucalyptus for a truly Australian souvenir as well as dance. Shaelah S, Tyleaha T, Chelsea K, Madi A were kind and thoughtful hosts and the girls loved their experience.
John Therry students who are studying Japanese had an opportunity to interact with the Japanese students introducing themselves in Japanese, listening to presentations about aspects of Japanese culture and playing games. There were also lots of playground opportunities for the JT students to meet the Japanese students and spend time together.
On their final afternoon at JT the Seiun Gakuen students were presented with a certificate by Miss Phillips acknowledging their time at John Therry and a small gift as a reminder of their time with us. The JT buddy students and elective Japanese students joined the celebration culminating in the making of fairy bread and lots of photo opportunities.
Many thanks to the students and staff of John Therry for being so welcoming of the Seiun Gakuen students, it was a wonderful opportunity for all those involved to share language, culture and friendship.
Mrs Ursino.
JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 1 Week 11
As we have reached the end of term, students are reminded to ensure they have sorted their Term 2 MISA or Rec Sports. All students have had 5 weeks to complete nomination forms and attend trials. Students who have failed to complete this task will be required to stay on College grounds in the first week of Term 2 and wait for their selections to be processed in person. Students are not to send emails with their selections.
A reminder that all students and their parents have given consent and agreed to students behaviour and uniform expectations via the General Sports Permission note - Unacceptable behaviour and or uniform standards may result in withdrawal from Tuesday Sports program or pathway opportunities.
MISA UPDATE:
Congratulations to all of our John Therry MISA teams that have wrapped up their competition games for Term 1. A massive shout out to our 7-9 Boys Softball team and 10-12 Boys Basketball team who finished their season undefeated and took the 1st place seeding heading into their semi’s, which they both won.
The last round of the Term saw 4 teams in action playing off for top spot. Unfortunately, we were successful in only one of those. Congratulations to the Open Boys Basketball team who have now won three years in a row and commiserations to the 7-9 Boys Softball team, the 7 - 9 Boys Volleyball team and the 10 - 12 Girls Basketball team who played well but were not the better team on the day.
John Therry claimed 141 points for the MISA Championship which sees the Junior and Senior Boys lead their respective competitions while the Junior Girls sit 7th and the Senior Girls sit in 2nd place.

Final Won 43-28 |
It was fitting that we left our closest game for the grand final, it was a tight game with us leading from wire to wire however the lead did not get greater than 8 for the first half. Our defence was a huge key keeping Broughton to 13 points with their best player kept mostly out of the half with awesome defence by Kruze and Moni. With some timely shots by Garang and Moni we held a tight 21-13 lead. The second half saw us build on this lead with timely stops and fast break layups. It was a great performance by the whole team to be undefeated champions with all but one game being under 10 points. This completes a JT 3 peat with JT winning 5 out of the last 6 competitions an outstanding feat. |
Moni Tumanuvao |
10-12 Girls Basketball |
Final Lost 34-15 |
The girls faced off against a fast and extremely tall Mt Carmel team. They were quick off the mark and were able to score numerous fast breaks and got a number of rebounds to get second chance points. The JT girls put up some resistance but lacked cohesion on offence and were lacking key defensive skills to stop our opponents. Valiant efforts from Alexis Paulo, Elyse Stonebridge and Maddie Albrow |
Alexis Paulo |
10-12 Boys Oz Tag |
3 vs 4 Won 12-3 |
A terrific finish to the season, with a convincing victory against Bennies. With only 8 players, the boys showed what they are capable of doing to the opposition in 30 minutes. After we leaked an early try to Bennies, this set off a few of our middles - Cory, Riley, Cohan and Diego who dug in deep and proved that we should have been in the GF today. A nice flick pass from the King that led to a try was a highlight of the day. Tre, Miguel and Gus as strong as always - Well done fellas |
Cory McKay |
10-12 Girls Oz Tag |
3 vs 4 Lost 8-1 |
It was a tough day in the rain. The ladies put up a valiant effort without any subs available. It was a fun season with a great group of enthusiastic players. Miss Consistent- Bridget Shearer was excellent with a great supporting cast from Isabella “terminator” Stapleton, Chloe “cha cha” Donovan and Ava “Flash” Hilton. Thanks to Jorja Smith and Indyana Cotton for their great support this term. |

Final Lost 6-5 |
JT played the Grand Final against MAG on a wet track. We batted first and started really strong getting five across. Magdalene then replied with three making it a tight last innings. Unfortunately our we saved our worst innings of the tournament for last and we were unable to get any runs to seal the game. Magdalene then cruised home to victory. Overall, it was a great season but we weren't good enough on the day. |
Noah Atkins |
7-9 Boys Volleyball |
Final Loss 2-1 Thomas Hassall |
Very close match which we were unlucky to lose. Held match point in the first set and won the second set quite comfortably. A string of errors in skill execution led to a run of points for the opposition at an inappropriate time. Despite our best efforts we couldn’t claw back the momentum. Well done to all players. While a disappointing final result, a successful season. |
Jean Rois O’Brien |
7-9 Girls Volleyball |
3 vs 4 Win 2-0 Mt. Carmel |
It was an incredible end of season win for the girls today. At no stage were they behind in either set. This gave them the confidence which continued to build throughout the match. The girls set up match plays (Pri & Mary), used their three shots regularly (Nhellejye & Piper), served extremely well (Maddie & Emerson) and even successfully attempted a few spikes (Grace & Sophie) . The girls played ‘out of their skin’ and were justly rewarded. Well done! Such huge improvements by all over the course of the season. |

DIOCESAN AND PATHWAYS UPDATE
As we draw to a close on Term 1, it’s fantastic to look back and see the great success JTCC has achieved this year already. Our individual athletes and teams have not just performed well, they have represented JTCC with pride, integrity and enthusiasm. This is what makes us most proud, and continues to establish JTCC as a force to be reckoned with across multiple sporting codes.
CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
It was a beautiful sunny day on Thursday 11th for our JTCC Cross Country Carnival. We had over 80 students walk down to Thomas Acres Reserve ready to stretch the legs and test their endurance. A big thank you to the staff and Year 12 SLR students who helped out and made sure the day ran smoothly and efficiently. All our students gave their best effort and represented JT really well. Top 4 students in each age group, boys and girls, now progress to the Diocesan Cross Country Championships in Nowra on Monday 6th May. Congratulations to all our runners on their efforts today.

BILL TURNER CUP
Round 2 vs Canley Vale H.S
The 2024 Bill Turner Cup campaign got underway for the boys on Tuesday the 9th April vs Canley Vale HS. A fresh squad of 17 players represented the College against a young and lesser skilled opposition. John Therry was on the scoreboard in the first 2 minutes of the game and soon notched another 5 minutes later. The boys were gaining confidence, maybe too much and soon made some poor passes which allowed Canley Vale a contested opportunity in front of goal and capitalised.
The boys were not deterred and continued to pepper the opposition goals, scoring three more but missing a dozen. We took a 5 - 1 lead into the break and were instructed to not get too loose and continue to pass the ball around and keep their shape in attack. We compiled four more goals whilst conceding a penalty.
Some good learning moments for the boys and standout performances from Jaidon Cosmidis, Lucas Alvarado and Cooper Marshall, all with two goals a piece.

BILL TURNER TROPHY
Round 2 vs Good Samaritan
Our girls took on Good Samaritan Catholic College in the second round of the Bill Turner Trophy. Having gone into the game with high morale after a huge win in our previous round, we knew victory would not come as easy this time around. The match was very intense with both sides going at it from minute one trying to open the goal account. It was evident that both sides were evenly matched and a single goal would make the difference. The match also showcased the defensive masterclass of our backline. Notably; Jorja Hohberg, Shylah Winley and Candice Stapleton who all put in a solid shift, having played the whole match shutting down every opportunity the opposition created.
The deadlock was broken when we were awarded with a freekick in the final 12 minutes of the game just outside the box, before dead ball specialist Alice Stephenson curled a stunner home into the back of the net. The lead was uplifting but short-lived unfortunately as a moment's lack of focus in the final 3 minutes of the game was taken advantage of by our opposition as they tapped in a simple goal. This took the game to extra time with a player being called off every 5 minutes. Our girls fought well to see the game out to the end with a few good attacking plays here and there. In the end though with around 5 minutes left of the entire match, a wonderstrike from quite the distance put Good Samaritan ahead which essentially ended our run in the competition. It was a very entertaining game and one that showed great dexterity and resilience from our girls. The improvement over the past couple years is clearly evident and we thoroughly believe it is just a matter of time before these girls achieve something great!"
DIOCESAN RUGBY LEAGUE SELECTION TRIALS
On Wednesday 27th March Mr. McGrath took 13 of our top JTCC rugby league players to Ziems Park, Corrimal to attend the Diocesan Rugby League Selection Trials. All the boys performed extremely well in the trials and represented JT with pride and integrity. JTCC had a very successful campaign, with Keiren Mostyn, Josh Booth, Zephaniah McLean and Moni Junior Tumanuvao selected in the 15’s team, and Riley Oitmann, Zac Dittavong selected in the Opens team, with Ben Mostyn as shadow. Players selected will represent Wollongong at the Southern Country Trial Match vs Western Region to be held at Wagga on Wednesday 8th May, 2024 (travel day Tuesday 7th May).
