The parable of the talents - how do we help our students explore and share their talents?
Last Sunday's Gospel reading (Matthew 25:14-30) is one that resonates strongly with me as an educator, as the message emphasises the importance of making the most of the talents we are given. In the parable, 3 servants are given 5, 2 & 1 talents to use and invest, and while the servants given 5 and 2 talents went out and multiplied their talents, the servant given one talent went and hid this talent for fear of losing it.
This parable encourages us to recognise and develop our God-given talents, whether they be skills, resources, or abilities. It underscores the idea that these gifts are not meant to be hoarded or buried but rather employed for the benefit of others and the greater good. By actively using and sharing our talents, we participate in God's plan and contribute to the well-being of the community.
As a Catholic College, we aim to provide an environment that supports students exploring and sharing their own gifts and talents, and to have the courage to continue to develop these well beyond their time at John Therry.
Outstanding HSC Art Express achievement
We Congratule Mr Steve Peters and our Year 12 Visual Arts Class who had 5 HSC Art express nominations, and 4 students selected. The best result ever for John Therry, and almost unheard of in any school. A truly outstanding result.
Students selected in Art Express include:
Achan Ajak ‘Stories of the Dark’ (Hazelhurst Arts Centre)
Angelica Estrada 'The Grain of the Present’ (Ngununggula, Southern Highlands Regional Gallery , Cowra Regional Art Gallery)
Lyric Jeanneret ‘Beyond the Lines’ (Virtual Exhibition VX)
Tess McEvoy-King ‘8 Second Rule’ (Tamworth Regional Gallery)
We also congratulate Montanna Taff whose work ‘Reflective Perspectives’ was nominated for HSC Art Express which in itself is an amazing achievment.
We will include photos in our next newsletter that will no doubt amaze you with the amazing talent (and hard work) of our students and teachers.
P & F Meeting - Tuesday 28th November 6:30pm
We welcome all parents to join us on the 28th November for our P & F meeting in the staff common room. We will discuss a range of current things happening around the College, and look for parent feedback on some important matters. These include possible uniform changes for the student sport jacket and winter jumper, and the College's mobile phone policy for 2024. We hope to see you there.
Year 12 Formal
We had a wonderful final farewell to our Year 12 students at their formal on Thursday 16th November. It is always a special occasion to see our Year 12 students graduate and the formal is an event that is a real milestone event in a young persons life. We will share photos when they are received back from our photographer as words cannot do justice to how wonderfully presentedour students were on this night. Ottimo House provded a lovely venue as seen below before students arrived.
We look forward to the HSC results being released on the 14th December and sharing morning tea with our Year 12 students on this day at the College.

JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 4 Week 7.
We are entering our last MISA game of the season with John Therry in a strong position. We have had a strong term with John Therry making 4 grand finals in the search for those elusive premierships. We wish our 4 grand finalist teams all the best for their grand final in Week 8.
Good luck to the following teams who are in a grand final
- 7-9 Boys AFL Team (Geribo)
- 7-9 Boys Indoor Cricket (Chapman)
- 7-9 Girls Softball (Joy)
- 10-11 Mixed Frisbee (Cook)
On behalf of the sport faculty, I wish to thank all students and staff for their contribution to MISA sport so far this year. John Therry will go into the last week of the season with a chance to win the overall MISA trophy for 2023.

OzTag 7-9 Boys McGrath |
vs MAG Win 8-7 |
Jordan Truckle |
For the first time this term, we were able to field a full team. The boys were desperate for a win after losing to Magdalene in the earlier rounds but seemed to be evenly matched. Jordan was a terrific addition, banking a few tries on debut and helped calm the nerves. The game went down to the final play, where our defence held on to claim the victory |

Tough day at the office for the JT oztag team |
AFL 7-9 Boys Geribo |
vs MCCC Win 81-6 |
Sullivan O’Dwyer |
The backs defended really well today, after a strong start from Mt Carmel. We ended up holding them to just the one goal. The combination between our mids and forwards worked well again today, compiling 81 points. Our MVP for the day, Sully, was outstanding, creating most of our chances, with his accurate kicks and hand balls, and scoring 5 goals himself. We look forward to the final in a couple of weeks time. |
AFL 7-9 Girls Neaves |
vs MCCC Loss 18-17 |
Nevaeh Metcalfe |
Another very close Loss in the final round of the season. The girls fought back hard from 13-0 down early in the first half to equal the game and going into half time only 3 points down. The second half was a tough fight and although we had our opportunities to close out the game, unfortunately we're unable to secure the win. |
Volleyball 10-11 Boys Winter |
vs MAS Win 2-0 |
Cody Meisenhofen |
An all around dominant performance for the JTCC 10-11 Boys Volleyball team. Winning the first set 25-12 then the second set 25-14, the boys never looked like they would lose. Cody Meisenhofen’s spiking and serving left the other team too afraid to return the ball with the amount of heat on it and alongside Lachlan Phiousodarith’s setting, they became an unstoppable force. Great job to the whole team. |
Volleyball 10-11 Girls Hynard |
vs MAS Lost 3-0 |
Serafina Logai-Lusiano |
The girls had practiced their skills throughout the week and this was on display at the start of the match. However we narrowly lost an exciting first set 25-23 with many great rallies between opponents. This was disappointing for the girls that had the lead for the majority of this set. A few awesome blocks at the net by Fisiilila Angianga in the second set gave the girls confidence that they would come through with a win. This was not to be as the heat and lack of concentration was against them. It was a close exciting match that we should have been victorious. Maybe next week! |

Softball 7-9 Girls Joy |
vs MCCC Lost 8-5 |
Lily Atkins |
An unfortunate turn of events for our girls as we took on Mount Carmel Catholic College for the reverse fixture. After narrowly beating the opposition in our last visit, we came in with high morale despite a lack of squad depth. It was a tight first innings with both teams ending the round 5-5, however the top half of the second innings saw us close off MCCC to 3 runs thanks to some brilliant pitching from Lily Atkins striking out three batters for the turnover. Although we went into the bottom half of the innings with a slight advantage, our opponents bested us with some fantastic fielding and pitching from their players. Despite some good hits, our batters couldnt make it past first base before they sealed the win with a 3rd tap out. Although we lost the game, the girls showed composture and respect for the opposition. An opportunity to learn and improve. |
Frisbee 10-11 Mixed Cook |
JTCC [31] vs MAS [8] |
Angus O'Dwyer [3 td 3 assists] Grace O'Reilly [6td] |
Can you feel it? The is a vibe and the JTCC Opens frisbee team are consumed by it. They are talking the talk and walking the walk. They are trying new skills and formations to develop their game sense. JTCC are on a roll. 15-2 at the half, 31-8 at the full. Great efforts by all with the following students getting touchdowns. Grace 6, Annelise 5, Jude 3, Angus 3, Ayla 1 and Garang 1. Play of the day - Grace O'Reilly with a 10m sprint and a two metre dive with a endzone grab by the fingertips. |

Will Shearer |
A very disappointing finish to what was a successful season. A few troops down once again, saw us fall short of a victory. The boys were lacking energy and enthusiasm which allowed for MCCC to capitalise on every play. Fatigue played a major factor, with no reserves for most of the match, whilst the weather did us no favours. However, it’s a shame to see the boys to miss out on the Grand final given the ability of the team. We will be back again next year to bring the trophy home! |

A huge congratulations to the girls! Our first win of the season sees us move into the playoff for third place next week. We played the best game all season and I am so proud of the girls. They have shown great determination and grit this season, and to finally come away with a win at the crucial end of the season is a wonderful achievement to the girls. Ava, Nevaeh, Tahlia and Madi A and Tanisha controlled the midfield, defending hard and moving the ball to our forwards. A huge effort from Amelia, Jorja, Courtney, Atong and Ariana in the back, with strong tackling all game. Mia, Hannah, Maddie B and Layla were consistently strong in the forwards and worked hard to gain possession. A massive improvement from the whole team, and hopefully we can continue this winning momentum into next week. Well done girls! |

Volleyball 10-11 Boys Williamson |
vs MCCC Loss 2-0 |
Calvin George |
Narrow loss in what was always going to be a difficult match without our Captain. William Chanhdara stepped in as a capable replacement. Our movement, enthusiasm and strong teamwork caused them many problems and we were unlucky not to convert a few more chances. A respectable finish to the season for a team that has shown great improvement throughout. |
Volleyball 10-11 Girls Hynard |
vs THAC Loss 2 - 0 |
Mary-Agnes Fatialofa |
The girls were up against an undefeated Thomas Hassell in the semi-final today but were convinced they had an opportunity to upset the favourites. This was evident in the first set with the JT girls working together to execute excellent rallies, set up winning points at the net and even block the defense spikes. They were unlucky to lose this very close first set. Throughout the second set the girls remained confident however a few poor serves and returns let the opposition to an easier victory than expected. The team played exceptionally well today and are looking forward to playing off for third next week in the minor final. Thanks to Elizabeth Soun and Ashlee Hunter for assisting today with the team and for scoring as we were down three players. |
Cricket 7-9 Boys Chapman |
vs MAS Won 53-42 |
Nicholas Augustine |
JT won the toss in our semi final against MAS and decided to bowl first. We bowled some really good line and length which was backed up by our excellent fielding. MAS were kept to just 52 runs. With the bat we started strong, but then our middle pairs struggled to get going, leaving 20 runs for the final pair. The boys managed the game beautifully as we went ahead on the second last ball, before safely defending the last ball of the game. A great win by JT. |
Softball 7-9 Girls Joy |
vs St Pats Loss 6-0 |
Mary Camilleri |
JTCC Softball girls were once again up against the reigning leaders St Patrick’s College who were yet to switch out in a set of innings. Having lost 10-3 to them the last time we faced off, we knew beating them would not be an easy task especially given the absence of star offensive player Alice Stephenson. Despite some decent efforts to even the game, the score sat 5-0 at the end of the first innings. It looked like it was going to be an annihilation with STP keeping us at a blank but our girls adapted phenomenally with some great pitching from Lily Atkins. At the end of the top half, we held off STP to a single run but the high was short- lived given the formidable fielding from STP that ended our match with a 6-0 loss. Mary Camilleri proved to be a silver lining in the cloud however, demonstrating excellent leadership and skill in multiple moments of the game. Although we take another L, we move forward being the first and only team to end STP’s 10 run streak. |
Frisbee 10-11 Mixed Cook |
JTCC 28 Vs OPAC 15 |
Annelise Hall + Garang Bol |
A delayed trip to the venue only gave the team 4 minutes Before the gane started, and the team was a little frazzled. A lacklustre pregame attitude saw the JTCC frisbee team on the defensive more often than previous games, with Oran Park going point for point with our efforts. Halftime talk saw us address our strengths which an athletic defensive presence and more sideways attacking in the final third of the field. JTCC shot out to a big lead and it stayed that way. Assists: 3 - Angus 3, Garang. 2 - Diego 2, Jude 1 - Riley, Darcy, Ben, Preston Touchdowns: 7- Annelise 4 - Grace 2 - Isabella-Grace 1 - Jude, Garabmng, Riley, Preston A much needed effort in the second half will need to be carried into next week's final against Mt Carmel. Go JT! |

Students cannot wear their MISA shorts as a part of their school sports uniform. There have been numerous students who have been wearing these shorts during the school day. Students have been informed that they will receive a lunchtime detention if they wear these at school. |
A few reminders regarding signing your son/daughter out of school during sport time:
- Please phone/visit the school office to ensure your son/daughter has been signed out correctly.
- Older brothers/sisters cannot sign your child out of school.
If students are not being signed out correctly, it makes it incredibly difficult for staff when they are marking the roll. Especially as students may be travelling off site, it is imperative that rolls are being accurately taken and completed.
Behaviour and Uniform Expectations during sport:
- Students are expected to behave appropriately and show respect to their classmates and teachers during sport.
- Students are expected to wear the John Therry sports uniform to sport (White socks and athletic joggers).
- Students are expected to participate in sporting activities unless they have a note from a parent/guardians stating others.
- Students who are injured and have a note from a parent/guardian are able to complete homework/assessments during Sport time (Sports Detention/Injury)
- Students ARE NOT permitted to have food or drinks on our sport buses. We have had too many students leaving rubbish on the buses.
If you have any issues or questions regarding sport, please email me - bodekerl01@dow.catholic.edu.au.
A reminder to check the Compass Portal for upcoming sporting events and their respective closing dates.
