I wish all Mother's, and those who fill motherly roles a lovely Mother's Day on Sunday.
As we celebrate Mother's Day, we are reminded of the greatest mother of all - Mary, the mother of God. Mary's unwavering faith, love, and devotion to her son Jesus is a shining example for all of us.
On this special day, let us honor all mothers and mother figures in our community, who emulate Mary's virtues of selflessness, courage, compassion, and strength. Let us also remember those who have lost their mothers or are struggling at this time, and offer them our love and support.
I hope our mother's feel spoiled in some way this Sunday.
STAFFING UPDATES
We recently farewelled Mrs Angela Cascarino as Drama teacher, after many years of dedicated service and passion in the creative and performing arts department. Mrs Cascarino has taken up some opportunities in theatre and we wish her all the best in following her passion. We thank her for the significant contribution she has made to John Therry and the many eyes she has opened to the gifts of the performing arts.
We have been fortunate to employ Mr Alexander Hayden, current drama teacher at St Benedict's Catholic College to replace Mrs Cascarino. He brings a wealth of experience and success at the HSC level, and a passion for the performing arts. He will work with Ms Haylie Abela as our Drama teachers and will commence with us in Week 7.
TEACHER SHORTAGE
You would have seen in the news there is a significant teacher shortage at the moment affecting most of the state. We are very fortunate to be fully staffed at the moment with qualified teachers. This is quite rare and we are very aware that this may change for us moving forward, as the state grapples with how to encourage more people into teaching, and bring back some of those who have recently left. We know that most graduates finishing at the end of the year are already employed so there is a very limited pool of new teachers for changes at the end of the year. We are fortunate that John Therry has a good culture and reputation and we continue to attract quality teachers when we advertise.
With COVID cases increasing and the flu season kicking off, we have had 2 days this term where we have had classes working in the College Hall as we have been unable to cover every individual class. While this works well and all students are working on assigned activities, it is not ideal and we try to avoid this wherever possible. I expect that through winter there may be times when we need to use this as a last resort.
MUSICAL
It is with great sadness that we have had to cancel our musical for 2023, Legally Blonde JR. Staff changes and limited access to volunteers who have normally assisted has meant that we do not have the resources to run as full musical as scheduled. We are looking to incorporate elements of the musical and further creative arts performances at a showcase evening later in the year. We acknowledge that there has been significant time and effort by staff and students to prepare for this and we apologise that we have needed to make this decision. We look forward to sharing the talents of our students later in the year.
CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION
Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Rosemeadow will be holding their Annual Procession in honour of the Blessed Sacrament on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 11th June at 2:30pm. It will include Scripture Readings, Rosary, Procession and Benediction. This is for all Parishes in the Macarthur Region, and all are welcome to join in this witness to our Eucharistic Lord among us.
ROTARY CLUB YOUTH EXCELLENCE AWARDS
John Therry Catholic College had three of our students recognised at these awards:
What wonderful achievements, please congratulate these students if you see them around.
Got SWAG?
The lyrics I have chosen, from H.E.R.'s Could've Been, resonate with the lives teenagers are living.
In the lyrics it's evident that she doesn't know what to do with her life, the challenges she faced in her teenage years create a series of identity and relationship crises that need to be shared with the world. Teenagers can relate to this, with the rushed pass of things. You see this with "right person, wrong timing". They don't want to express their feelings so they hide them from each other. It's relatable. We've all been there. The colours set the tone for the image, which evokes the sad times while reminiscing about the past. Overall, my aim was to engage the audience in something personal, but allow others to feel and relate at the same time. |
|
This piece was inspired by a close friend and the song "Die For You" by The Weekend. Sharing music is a strong part of our friendship, and it's great to be inspired by those around you. |
|
The inspiration came from a song my mum really likes, The Backstreet Boys' As Long As You Love Me. She often mentions the lyrics and this led me to look for some of those keywords on Pinterest. My aim was to create effect by marrying the picture and the words together. |
We want to hear what YOU think
As part of our focus on school effectiveness, John Therry Catholic College will be participating in an online survey for students, staff and parents. Tell Them From Me (TTFM) is a suite of surveys for measuring student engagement and wellbeing. The surveys aim to capture student, parent and teacher voices, providing reliable evidence to use in identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
The Survey is open from
26th April - 19th May.
As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. All parents and caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey available through the compass portal or by going to:
http://tellthemfromme.com/jtcc23
The survey is anonymous and should not take more than 20 minutes to complete.
Year 9 Photography and Digital Media Excursion 2023.
On Thursday April 27th, the Year 9 PDM class went into Sydney as part of their 'Shapes and Shadows' unit of work. They travelled by train to Milsons Point, then walked around Jeffrey St. Wharf and Luna Park. From there, they caught a ferry to Barangaroo, walked to Wynyard station, and Observatory Hill for lunch. Then onward up to the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon for a bird’s eye view of the harbour, then through the historical Rocks precinct and finishing at Circular Quay.
The students’ Photographic challenge included not just taking photographs but making photographs with the school’s DSLR cameras. The themes included Reflection, Symmetry and Repetition, Shadows, Train station, view from high up, Frame within a frame, Coffee Shop, Something Red, Looking up, Architecture, Rule of Thirds, Texture, Fashion, Underground walkways and Leading lines. These photographs become part of the students first Assessment task that already includes analogue photography; photograms, cyanotypes and prof sheets all created in our school darkroom. Thank you to all the students on their exemplary behaviour and enthusiastic participation for this event. A special thank you to Mrs. Hume who accompanied us on the excursion on the day. Her knowledge and support was invaluable.

JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 2 Week 3
We were fortunate enough to kick start our new sporting term with another week of dry, beautiful weather. Our Term 2 MISA Competition kicked off with our teams posting some positive results, especially our Div 1 Rugby League teams and our Senior Girls Indoor Cricket Team. Students are to be commended for their positive behaviour whilst representing JT and I look forward to seeing how our teams go this term.
This term we entered teams in the newly created MISA U/16s Girls Rugby League competition. The new sport was well represented by John Therry students, with JT entering a team in both Division 1 and Division 2. The girls are competing in 7 in a side Rugby League and both our teams have made a positive start to the competition. Please see the photo below.
Students and parents are reminded to read the weekly run sheet each Tuesday morning for further information regarding Term 2 sport. With the cold weather starting to appear, it is imperative that students are wearing the correct uniform whilst representing the college at external sporting events.
Students are encouraged to wear thermals/layers during winter to stay warm, however this cannot be seen and must be a short sleeve layer. Students are not able to wear jumpers/hoodies that are not JT school uniforms.

7 - 9 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Lost 27-25 vs THAC |
A rough introduction to basketball for some of the boys with rushed trials and training sessions due to the holidays and public holidays. The team consists of some energetic boys with a range of skills and the first game provided them all an opportunity to showcase their skills. With more time and training, the boys will obviously develop new skills and be more competitive in future games. Our game against Thomas Hassell was close and competitive. Unfortunately our mistakes were frequent and this hindered our overall performance. Down 10 -11 at the break, the boys were told to value possession of the ball. After allowing easy buckets to the opposition, the boys clawed back from an 11 point deficit to score the last 9 points of the game to eventually go down by 2. MVP: Cooper Dickie (7 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists) |
MR JEFFREYS |
7-9 GIRLS BASKETBALL |
LOSS 77-11 vs THAC |
For a first game the girls played hard and learnt a lot about playing both sides of the floor. The focus for next week is on defence as we develop our ability to match up and grab rebounds. MVP: Sophie Regan |

10-12 Boys Rugby League |
Won 52-4 VS Magdalene |
The Senior Rugby league team had absolutely destroyed the opposition and had shown abit of mercy by letting them score a try towards the end of the game. The boys were offensively strong whilst holding a strong defensive line. A team effort from everyone and MVP: Ben Mostyn |

U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 1 |
Won 11-6 vs Magdalene |
Strong start for the rugby league A team against Magdalene today, the girls made a big impression, showing what’s to come in the rest of their Misa season. The team continued to back each other up making strong runs up the middle of the field and holding a solid line in defence, allowing them to take away the win 11 tries to 6. Bridget was a highlighted player with consistent high quality reading of the play scoring 5 tries. Bella also lead well in defence saving several tries from the wing. Keen to see what’s to come for the remainder of the season!! MVP: Bridget Shearer |
MR STROJNY |
U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 2 |
Lost 5-4 vs Magdalene |
What an opener to the first under 16s girls rugby league misa team, it was a shaky start with most of the girls not playing the game before and organisation by field sizing and the time length of game, but they held their heads high and kept working hard. The B team took a devastating loss 5-4 in such a close game, they continued to back each other up with strong runners down the middle and strong defence. keen to watch another hit out next week! 10-12 Girls Indoor Cricket |
Won 112-38 vs Broughton |
The senior girls' indoor cricket team started their season on a high note with a convincing win over Broughton Anglican College. Electing to bowl first, Broughton struggled against our quality batting as we posted a total of 112. We defended this total comfortably, thanks to some accurate bowling and excellent fielding. It was an impressive team effort, with everyone contributing to the victory. MVP: Zarli Lakeman |

7-9 Boys Hockey |
Won 2-1 vs OPAC |
Great start to the season for the JT 7-9 MISA boys hockey team with a 2-1 win over Oran Park Anglican College. With Goals to Travis Campbell and Josh Pike. As time went on in the match the boys started to gel together more and more setting the team up for a good season to come. MVP - Travis Campbell |
MISS MOON |
7-9 Mixed Frisbee |
7-7 vs Broughton |
Up against Broughton and what felt like a min-cyclone, it was a slow start for our Frisbee team. Down 5-2 early in the first half, we were feeling a little low. By half time we gained ground and went in to the sheds at 5-4. The second half saw excellent communication and great team spirit bring us back from the jaws of defeat. The game finished in a 7-7 draw - an outstanding comeback from our ladies and gents. Special mention to Jazwyn for her leadership and Ethan for his direction on the field. MVP’s - Ava and Zaine |
MR CHAPMAN |
10-12 Boys Softball |
Won 8-7 vs SBCC |
The JT boys played St. Benedict’s in a closely fought contest. We batted first and scored 4 runs, then with some poor fielding we conceded 6. In the second innings we managed to turn it all around. We scored 4 runs again, however, we fielded very well, culminating in a clutch match defining catch from Alex Nohra. JT win 8-7. MVP: Alex Nohra |

7 - 9 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Won 47 - 45 Macarthur |
The boys are learning the hard way that keeping possession of the ball is a critical piece of the game if they are to control the momentum. The first hard was riddled with turnovers and poor decision making which allowed Macarthur to get fast break lay-ups and some easy scores under the hoop, which allowed them to get out to a 27 - 17 halftime lead. The boys were instructed on our game plan, and it was up to them to go out and get the win. Our starting five of Rewa, Izaiah, Thomas, Cooper and Deng outplayed Macarthur and closed the gap to 5 points with 10 minutes to go. Our decision making improved which allowed JT to take the lead with a minute to go when Rewa was fouled on a successful drive to the basket. He missed the free throw but Izaiah was able to get the rebound and we secured the win. A 30 point second half from the boys demonstrated what they can do on both ends of the court, if they turn up to play. Apologies for the game time to some boys, but I hope you are happy with the team performance. Izaiah - ⅚ shooting, 10 points, 3 assists Deng - 4/8 shooting, 8 points. Cooper - 4/8 shooting, 9 points MVP: Rewa Takiari - 7/17 shooting, 16 points, 5 assists, 3 blocks, 14 rebounds. |
MR JEFFREYS |
7-9 GIRLS BASKETBALL |
LOSS 42-14 vs St Pats |
The girls played a tough St Pats team that were quite tall and strong. With some great plays by Sophie to keep us in the game our defence wasn’t so good however some great team shooting saw us with a 2 point lead with 1min left in the first half. Unfortunately we ran out of gas in the second half and some great shooting my St Pats saw us go down 44-14. The girls are really starting to come together and we look forward to improving each and every week. MVP: Sophie Regan |
MR FIFITA |
10-12 Boys Rugby League |
Won 42-10 vs Mt Carmel |
An exciting match against MCCC in the Inaugural Webb Cup saw JT come home with the goods. The Year 10 boys stepped up with Cory claiming two tries and Tyler sneaking over for one too. Cooper, Fin, Mitch and Ayden also showed their commitment to the team through some solid work in the middle. The usual players were solid, with Noah also banking a few tries and conversions. Thanks to Kisione, Sam and Roger for playing while we were a few players down. MVP: Roger Lotawa and Noah Mckenzie |

U16s Girl Rugby League DIV 1 |

Round 2 was a successful game for the girls A team, coming away with a 7-4 win, continuing their undefeated streak. There were some very strong performances across the team, including Jorja, implementing several plays and Gese with some very impressive attack and defence. This week there has been some clear improvements in both defence and attack, however there’s still room for improvement. MVP: Jorja Borg |

We were solid defensively and controlled most of the game. Need to work on key situations with the ball to make the most of attacking opportunities. At times we made the game harder than it needed to be. Moving the ball quicker and a pressing back line will hopefully help improve. Goal scored by Preston Teran 10 minutes into the game. A driven shot into the bottom left hand corner past a diving keeper from the top right corner of 18 yards after Xavier hit the wall from a free kick. Back stronger next week. 3 points - Luke Isakka 2 point - Angus O'Dwyer 1 - Preston Teran MVP: Luke Isakka |

Tough day at the Hockey office today going down 2-0 to William Carey. Two early goals put JT on the back foot from the start but combinations started to form and there were some good signs later on in the game that show the team is coming together nicely. MVP - Sullivan O'Dwyer |

Our John Therry frisbee team fought hard today against Thomas Hassall down at Minto. Things were looking up in the beginning with an opening goal from Jazwyn however Thomas Hassall were able to level the score card soon after. It was an extremely close game with both schools taking the lead at various times throughout the game. Thomas Hassall seemingly sealed the win with only three minutes left however, John therry didn’t give up hope and were able to walk away with a draw after scoring an equaliser in the final few seconds. Special mention to Jazwyn, Nicholas, Sienna and William for their goals. MVP = Sienna Marelic |

2023 Diocesan Senior Boys Soccer Championships
After the event was delayed by poor weather, a small but talented team of JT’s finest travelled to Ocean Park, Woonona to compete in this year's Diocesan Championships and Individual Selection trials.
The team consisted of park footballers to NPL players but they came together to represent JTCC on a cold and windy day. A credit to the players as conditions were tough, opponents were very physical and some players were fighting illness to represent. The team played 3 pool matches and were undefeated leading into the cross over semi-finals. The boys demonstrated some crafty midfield combinations from Preston, Cohan and Darcy, which led to numerous forward runs by our strikers. SOlid efforts in the defensive line by Clayton, Xavier, Mitchell, Giovanni and Ben Anderson kept JT in the game. A standout each and every game, Diego Martin is a sure diocesan representative in future years.
Leading into the semi-finals, JT kept their spirits high and in my opinion were the better team against Holy Spirit. Both teams went back and forth to no avail. Straight to penalties and JTCC got off to a good start with Cohan, Darcy, Giovanni all scoring before a miss. Xavier got us back on track before 2 more misses allowed Holy Spirit to pinch the win 5 - 4.
We then played off for third/fourth place against Edmund Rice but the boys were spent, and with only 2 fit subs, the boys expired all their energy and came up just short.
JTCC had the following results for the day:
JTCC defeated St John’sNowra Nowra 3 - 0 (goals to Cohan, Giovanni and Coby)
JTCC defeated Corpus Christi 2 - 0 (goal to Coby)
JTCC defeated Edmund Rice 1 - 0. (Goal to Thierry)
JTCC defeated by Holy Spirit 0 - 0 (4 - 5 on penalties)
JTCC defeated by Edmund Rice College 0 - 3.
Back row - Coby Hilton, Ban Anderson, Jake Charlton-Nelson, Thierry Ngorora, Matt Maytom, Preston Teran, Liam Wicks, Xavier Martin, Cohan Timmer, Giovanni Lovisolo, Clayton Baguley
Front row - Darcy Wilson, Diego Martin and Mitchell Mackenzie.
Special shout out to our two pathway representatives in Xavier Martin and Darcy Wilson.
They will now compete at the NSWCCC Championships on 22/23 May at Valentine Park. All the best Xavier and Darcy
Bill Turner Soccer - Round 2.
Both the boys and girls team played against Mt Carmel Catholic College on Tuesday 9th May. Special thanks to the parents who came to support the teams.
Down to numbers due to broken toes, strained ligaments, Covid and sickness, the boys were a little too confident heading into the game and allowed Mt Carmel too much time and space in the middle of the park and as a result were defending our 18 yard box frequently. We did this well, with Jon V, Brooklyn and Paa Ekow nullifying their attacks.
Jeshua and Charbel played great 2 way football, frequently denying their opponents scoring opportunities, but also getting wide to create passing opportunities for our midfielders, to play out of our half. Maahir, Davonne were creating frequent forward passes, but some too direct were out of our players reach. The boys pulled things together in the second half after receiving some tactical information. Winning the second ball and looking for long range shots were crucial if we were to take advantage of the game.
In the 50th minute after a failed clearance, Cooper Marshall won the ball from 40m out, took some controlled touches before shooting over the goal keeper to open the JTCC account. A change to our formation made the middle compacted, and Mt Carmel made too many errors playing out. A quick forward pass and Blake Neal passed the ball to Davonne in the 18 yard box who extended our lead. And lastly, Maahir contributed to the scoreline by shooting from 20 metres out to evade the keeper and hit the back of the net. The boys deserved to win, as we only had 2 subs and we also got to debut Lucas Failla from Year 7.
Looking forward to a St Greg’s rematch next round to settle some scores.
Back - Emerson Yevenes, Jeshua Prakasham, Robbie Blakely, Brooklyn Osbourne, Aidan Murray, Paa Ekow Eduafel, Jaidon Cosmidis, Charbel Hachem, Davonne PLaatjies

John Therry soccer girls took on Mount Carmel Catholic College for our second round of Bill Turner Trophy. Having been knocked out of the competition last year by the same team by quite a margin, it took a lot of mental fortitude and preparation to approach the game with the elite mentality that the girls did. Even though we were down by two goals very early, we still pushed on creating some great chances before rising star Alice Stephenson (Year 8) netted a brilliant finish. Despite some decent attempts from their players, our goalkeeper Darcie Bennett made some incredible saves to keep the scoreline stagnant approaching the second half.
The girls went into the second half with a much more energetic performance but the opposition managed to break through once more. Alice Stephenson made it a brace with 5 minutes left on the clock but unfortunately the final whistle sounded with the score standing at Mount Carmel 4 - 2 John Therry, ending our run in the Bill Turner Trophy. Considering the gap in the scoreline last time we played against the team, the girls played a fantastic game this time and showed incredible improvement to keep the game so tight towards the end.
