Staff Development Day - 24th April
John Therry staff were involved in processes to support our College strategic planning at our recent staff development day. We are undertaking a system led Cyclic Inquiry process this year that will help us set priorities for the next 4 years. Staff spent significant time reflecting on the National School Improvement Tool, evaluating how we are currently operating, and opportunities for growth and improvement.
Parent voice is particularly important in this cyclic inquiry and the Tell Them From Me survey will be used to ensure we identify what parents value, and areas they want the school to focus on to improve the educational experience for our students. If you can take the few minutes to complete this survey it will be greatly appreciated.
HOLIDAY WORKS
We continue to work to improve the learning environment for our community, with our next phase looking at our learning spaces. Master planning taking place this year will set priorities for a significant refubishment program over the next few years.
Carpeting - new carpet has been laid in a number of classrooms across the College.
New demountables - C6 & C7 demountables have been demolished and new demountables installed near the rear car park. The space left behind from C6 & C7 will be converted into a senior area with some covered seating and garden improvements. A BBQ and external kitchenette will also be a feature of this space.
Painting - has taken place in a range of classrooms and spaces across the school. We will continue this work to ensure all classroom spaces are welcoming and inviting for staff and student learning.
VAPE detectors - have been installed in 2 sets of toilets in the College. This was supported by the P&F who purchased the Vape detectors and they were installed over the holidays. These detectors sound an alarm, and send a notification to designated staff to investigate. We have large signs indicating these are present in the toilets.
APPIN MASSACRE MEMORIAL
John Therry staff and students were again involved in the running of the Appin Massacre memorial, which remembers the 14 Aboriginal men, women and children that were killed on April 16 1816. Particular thanks to Cherrylle and Brian Nau, who worked closely with Sr Kerry in making the day possible.
ANZAC DAY MARCH
Thank you to the John Therry staff and students who participated in the Campbelltown ANZAC Day March on Tuesday 25th April. We always have a strong turnout and are very visible as a school community showing our respects at this event.
It was lovely to welcome our OLHC Primary School Captains to our Easter Liturgy at the end of Term 1. As a Catholic Community, we are something much bigger than just ourselves and our school, and this connection is a small but important reminder of that. We thank Ms O'Sullivan and the students for sharing their time with us.
Safety Sensors
We are pleased to inform you that the College has taken an important step to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. We are focused on promoting positive behaviours and protecting the rights of students at the College, and as such, we have installed safety sensors in College toilet areas.
As you may be aware, vaping has become a growing concern among young people in recent years. During Term 1, two of our staff members took part in a national data study, “Generation Vape” conducted by the University of Sydney and the Australian Cancer Council. This involvement of our staff is a proactive way to address the fact that no studies in Australia have yet investigated the extent of e-cigarette use in young people and little is known about the level of awareness and understanding of e-cigarettes and their significant harms.
Further, to support safe environments, we have installed sensors that are capable of detecting vaping in our College toilets. These sensors are designed to detect the presence of e-cigarette aerosol in the air, as well as any other types of smoke and noises. We thank the P&F for their contribution and support of this initiative.
Our primary objective in installing these sensors is to help ensure that our students are not exposed to any harmful substances that may affect their health and wellbeing. We also believe that this will help to discourage any vaping or smoking on school grounds, as well as other antisocial behaviours. Parents and carers are reminded that the sale of e-cigarettes to people under 18 is illegal.
We understand that some parents and carers may have concerns or questions about the use of these detectors. Please be assured that they are non-intrusive and are simply designed to detect any potential hazards to our students.
If students are caught vaping or in possession of a vape, there will be a consequence put in place as per the school behaviour policy.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the College. We appreciate your ongoing support and cooperation as we work together to promote a safe and healthy learning environment for all our students.
Winter Uniform Reminders
As we commence Term 2, students are required to wear full winter uniform. Winter uniform includes a blazer, which must be worn to Learning Group at the beginning of the day and when leaving the College in the afternoons. The College sport jacket is not to be worn with the academic uniform, and hoodies are not permitted as part of either uniform. Shoes worn with the academic uniform are to be black, leather shoes able to be laced.
Student Surveys
During Week 2, students will be asked to complete Pivot and TTFM surveys. Tell Them From Me surveys have been completed by our staff and are important for parents to complete as well. Feedback from these surveys will analysed as part of our College Cyclic Inquiry process, and will offer valuable insights into the current context of the College and inform furture planning. At a recent College assembly, I spoke with students about the importance of their voices in this process. Learning Group mentors will explain the TTFM process in detail with students during the Week 2 pastoral lesson. Further information can be found on Tell Them From Me in this edition of the College newsletter.
Students will also be asked to complete a Pivot wellbeing survey and learning survey. At John Therry, we acknowledge that learning and wellbeing are closely connected. Pivot is an online platform that surveys students using a rating system to allow students to give feedback on both their wellbeing and feedback on learning in individual classes. Pivot is a tool to support a culture of feedback and a culture focused on support and improvement. We encourage parents / carers to speak with their child about their feedback on learning and wellbeing.
IMPORTANT NEW DOCUMENT FROM BRIAN MASCORD
Dear parents and carers,
The Bishop of Wollongong, Most Rev. Brian Mascord DD, has published a new document on the nature and purpose of Catholic schools in our diocese. Titled Bearers of Christ’s Love — Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Wollongong, this document is the first of its type in our diocese since the 1970s.
In it, Bishop Brian explores the purpose of Catholic schools as an expression of the Church experience, as well as the vital connection between schools, parents/carers, parishes, and the diocese itself.
Throughout the document, Bishop Brian reiterates:
-
The significant role Catholic schools play in the evangelising mission of the Church and the nurturing of students’ faith.
-
The commitment of Catholic educators to complement and support the educational rights and duties of parents as their child’s first educator.
-
The essential requirement for Catholic schools to be places of educational excellence, where learning, wellbeing and actions of outreach and service are integrated in a holistic educational vision and practice.
-
That Catholic schools are places where those seeking a Catholic education are welcome, reflecting the diverse mix of cultures, nationalities and religious traditions that currently make up our school communities.
I encourage you to take the time to watch the short video from Bishop Brian and read this important document on the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong website.
We want to hear what YOU think
As part of our focus on school effectiveness, John Therry Catholic College will be participating in an online survey for students, staff and parents. Tell Them From Me (TTFM) is a suite of surveys for measuring student engagement and wellbeing. The surveys aim to capture student, parent and teacher voices, providing reliable evidence to use in identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
The Survey is open from
26th April - 19th May.
As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. All parents and caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey available through the compass portal or by going to:
http://tellthemfromme.com/jtcc23
The survey is anonymous and should not take more than 20 minutes to complete.

Now is the time to claim ABSTUDY for your high school child
ABSTUDY is a group of payments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. ABSTUDY helps with the costs of studying or doing an Australian Apprenticeship.
It can help with your child’s school fees, boarding costs, travel to and from school and other school items. If your child’s travel is impacted by COVID-19 or they need to study remotely, ABSTUDY can also help.
If you’re a parent or guardian and your child is younger than 16, you should claim on their behalf. If your child is 16 and over, or independent, they can claim themselves. To claim, call the Services Australia’s ABSTUDY line on Freecall 1800 132 317.
If they’re starting uni or TAFE, they’ll be able to claim online through myGov.
Claiming before 1 December means ABSTUDY payments can be finalised in time for the start of school next year. This is very important if your child needs to move away from home to study.
To see what you or your child can get, and learn how to claim, go to servicesaustralia.gov.au/abstudy
JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 2 Week 1
For the first time in a few years, our Term 1 season went ahead with no interruptions and postponements. It was great to see students enjoy a full term of MISA sport after a few years interrupted with COVID and wet weather. Feedback from staff was very positive, highlighting the exceptional sportsmanship and skill level of our John Therry athletes. A big thank you to our MISA coaches who consistently take time out of their busy schedules to train, organise and coach their MISA teams each week.
A big congratulations to the 10-12 Boys Basketball team who knocked off the previously undefeated Mt Carmel in the Grand Final to claim our first premiership of the season.

10 - 12 BOYS MISA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
Firstly, big congratulations to Mt Carmel for winning the 2023 Marist Basketball Carnival. A massive achievement for the South-West Sydney region.
The JT boys were up against a formidable opponent in Mt Carmel in the finals. We set our team strategies for their line up and the JT boys executed those plans. Even though we were down by 5 at the break, we started the second half with key baskets by Kalan (3 pointer), Keon (6 points) which got JT on a roll to close the gap. The boys battled through the game and took the lead with just under 2 minutes to go. The defensive effort was unreal, it was physical, it was a grind, but with smart play and well-timed steals from our full court press, Adrian Narvais was able to make critical free throws to create a small lead, which we were able to defend as the time ended.
Congratulations boys, your Grand Final MISA win created a massive upset over the 2023 Marist Champions.
Coach:
Mr Jamie Cook
Grand Final Stats:
Garang Bol - 7 points, 4 block shots, multiple rebounds
Lleyton Turner - 12 points, 4 steals
Adrian Narvais - 5 points, 3 steals
Keon Zaglass - 6 points, 3 steals
Kalan Nau - 3 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals
Kruz Takiari - 2 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks
Kisione Tupola - 3 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks
7 - 10 BOYS DIOCESAN SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS
What a day! The JT boys represented the College so well in hot and humid conditions. Through niggling injuries and big tough opposition teams, the boys rose above and showed true JT spirit.
The 16s battled through four tough pool matches to finish with 2 wins (Mt Carmel and Magdalene), one draw (St Benedicts)and 1 loss to Edmund Rice to secure 2nd in the pool.
Not a bad effort from a team who are a majority of Year 8 and 9 boys.
We proceeded to the semi final and defeated Corpus Christi 3-2 on penalties, with Blake Neal, Jaiden Cosmidis and Cohen Timmer scoring the all important goals.
We progressed to the final and faced Holy Spirit, after they defeated an undefeated Edmund Rice in their semi final.
The boys were tired after a huge day and battled it out right to the end, with scores level at 0-0 after regulation time.
To penalties again and this time the JT boys were flawless and won 5-3.
Great effort from the lads which gets them into the Diocesan playoff for the NSWCCC U16 knockout competition.
This win sees the U16 team win back to back titles, a feat which I am told, has not been achieved before.
Go JT!

10-12 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Won 46-33 Thomas Hassell |
After securing a semi final berth vs Thomas Hassell, the JT boys entered the game with grand final aspirations. Down our leading scorer from last week, the boys entered the game with an expectation that they are to take their scoring opportunities. We struggled to contain our opposition with our small line up but after some half time instructions we immediately made an impact on the 20-20 halftime score. Big defensive efforts made an impact on the offensive end and we created a 12 point buffer we we took to the end of the game. Great effort by all players especially Garang Bol and Kalan Nou MVP: Adrian Narvais led the way with 16 points on the back of 8/16 shooting. We look forward to taking on Mt Carmel in the final in Week 11. |

A home game today in the heat (an outside match) caused the girls to struggle a little. They lacked motivation and hence didn't play as well as the last few weeks. With improved communication on the court and better serving by the girls this should hopefully come together for the next few games. A good effort to all today. MVP: Mary Camillerri |
MR TRAN |
10-12 GIRLS OZ TAG |
Lost 5-3 vs St Pats |
A “Perth” scorcher Tuesday arvo delivered the 10-12 girls Oztag a secure win. The Clovers proved too good with the tries from Chelsea, Grace, Ella, Bridget, Mia and Veronica helping to seal the game. A strong first half ended in 4-2, however an even stronger second half ended the game in a 7-3 win. Well done girls. MVP- Grace O’Reilly |
MR MCGRATH |
10-12 BOYS OZ TAG |
Won 8-6 vs MAS |
Some very tough weather conditions today out at Kirkham with 30 degree heat. A few players down made it hard for those playing in the middle, limiting their break times. We made it hard for ourselves early, going into the second third down and lacking confidence and energy. We were down to 7 players and still managed to grind our way to a victory. Well done. MVP: Matt Maytom |
MRS BULGER |
7-9 GIRLS HOCKEY |
0-0 Draw vs OPAC |
The 7-9 Girls Hockey team improves every week. They are now a confident and dominant Team on the field. It was very nice to step back and watch the Team communicate, adjust positions as needed and encourage each other with great enthusiasm. Each player contributed in some way to ensure the ball remained in our offensive end. Jaswyn had three great attempts at a goal throughout the game but was unfortunately unsuccessful. Congratulations to Alice, Eryn and Paige for stopping the other teams attempt at goal, they were outnumbered in defense but capably defended OPAC shot at goal and brought the ball back to our goal end. MVP goes to Layla Davidson who has worked hard each week. Layla is a key player who confidently and quickly brings the ball down through our midfield. Layla made many intercepts and tackles she was impressive to watch. Congratulations to the whole team. Looking forward to our next game. MVP- Layla Davidson |
MR GERIBO |
7-9 GIRLS IND CRICKET |
Loss 81-4 vs Magdalene |
After rising for our first win last week we were quickly on the downhill as Magdalene scored 81 after being sent into bat. They also managed to get 7 wickets in the first four overs meaning we were on -20 with just two skins to go. Jade and Elyse, followed by Maddie and Ella, batted well, meaning we were able to finish with a positive score. MVP: Elyse Stonebridge |
MR CHAPMAN |
7-9 BOYS SOFTBALL |
Loss 9-3 vs Magdalene |
JT played Magdalene and we started strong with our first three batters all getting runs. After that, however, we struggled for the rest of the game. Our fielding was not up to standard and we have too many chances to the opposition batters. A game to forget and we look forward to getting back on the park next week to put in an improved performance. MVP: Kaiden Myers |

10-12 BOYS BASKETBALL |
Won 60 - 37 vs Thomas Hassel AC |
This weeks game was a must win for the Open Boys if they were to secure a top four position leading into semi finals weeks. The boys have learnt some hard truths over the past few weeks and it was evident today that they are willing to listen and learn from their mistakes. We started with a smaller unit thos week with the emphasis to get out and run the fast break, whilst applying a full court press. We had immediate dividends with several turnovers leading to some fast break points. The boys are to be commended for their ball movement on offense this week, which showed by several new scorers. The team shot 24/53 from the field led by by Lleyton Turner 22 points (8/15 FG, 4/8 3 ptr) and Adrian Narvais 13 points (6/14 FG). Defense won the game with several key steals and blocks by Garang Bol and one massive block against the backboard by Adam Bell. Will need to wait for a points update but we should be able to secure a favourable semi final position. MVP: Lleyton Turner (22 points, 3 steals, 5 assists) |

10-12 GIRLS BASKETBALL |
38-31 LOSS to THAC |
Due to injuries and absences, John Therry played with only 5 players and were able to stay competitive with THAC. However, due to the fatigue and the constant assault from THAC - they could not hold on for much longer. Overall, the girls played well and kept the difference in scores under double digits. Loss 9-2 vs MAG |
Unlucky today as we did not come out with the result we wanted. But in saying that the efforts from the girls were outstanding. Veronika busted through the line and sprinted the field for our opening try. Bridget also strode through the line late in the game to lift the spirits of the team. The girls' efforts today were unmatched even with the score being 9-2 they continued their effort throughout the whole game. Not to mention the amazing fill ins for the girls who were absent. Really great team effort today. MVP: Gabbie Sloan |
MR MCGRATH |
10-12 BOYS OZ TAG |
WIN 8-6 vs MAG |
An important win in round 5 spelled an undefeated regular season for JT. The boys started strong with some slick work in the middle which allowed some nice tries out wide for Matt and Noah. After the halftime break, JT started well with big energy plays from Riley and Marshall. A lot of silly errors in the wet conditions let Magdalene claw their way back into the contest. An intense finish saw each team go try for try, however JT pulled away with a 8-6 win. MVP: Riley Oitmann |
MRS BULGER (Winter) |
7-9 GIRLS HOCKEY |
Loss 3-0 vs St Benedicts |
Today, the year 7-9 Girls Hockey team came up against an experienced St. Benedict’s hockey squad. Our JTCC Girls, put up a great defensive effort, opposing a relentless St Benedict’s attack and we were able to prevent 3 shots on target in the first 5 minutes. Credit to our backline led by Alice Stephenson for preventing any more potential goals and putting pressure on shots against our goals. With the majority of the game being played on the defence, the girls should be proud of keeping the final score to a 3-0 loss. MVP - Alice Stephenson |
MR GERIBO |
7-9 GIRLS IND CRICKET |
Loss 103-45 vs MAS |
The Year 7/9 girls' indoor cricket team played an exciting match but unfortunately lost. Megumi and Chelsea scored the most runs for their team. Despite facing tough opponents, the team fought hard and showed great sportsmanship. The match was a great display of indoor cricket, and the Year 7/9 girls' team can take many positives from their performance. MVP: Chelsea Bond |
MR CHAPMAN |
7-9 BOYS SOFTBALL |
5-2 LOSS vs MCCC |
JT came up against MCCC and batted first. MC had a representative level pitcher and restricted us to just two first innings runs. In the field we competed with enthusiasm, however, MC were just too good on the day. Neither team managed to score any second innings runs. MVP: Boston Melville |
BILL TURNER TROPHY ROUND 1 VS JOHN EDMONDSON H.S
John Therry’s soccer girls put on an incredible performance last week, winning their Bill Turner Trophy round 1 match 7-0 against John Edmondson High School.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that they were determined to dominate the game. The team started strong, holding possession and creating numerous opportunities to score. It didn't take long for them to break through the opponent's defense and score the opening goal, with a perfectly placed shot into the bottom corner by debutant Matilda Lamaro (Year 7).
After the first goal, the team continued to press forward, displaying excellent teamwork and skill. They moved the ball quickly and efficiently, with crisp passes and precise touches. Captain Jorja Hohberg (Year 9) and Ava Abi-Khattar (Year 8) both chipped in for the score sheet as the game carried on, but it was Alice Stephenson (Year 8) who stole the headlines with a phenomenal 4 goal tally, including a long-range free kick that rocketed into the top corner.
Although our attackers were having all the fun, no credit can be taken from the relentless defensive work that the backline put in despite the absence of some key players. Last year’s MISA superstar, Darcie Bennett (Year 9) took home a clean sheet with a string of impressive saves that required astute decision-making and bravery.
Overall, it was a fantastic performance from the girls, with every player contributing to the victory. The team showed great spirit and determination throughout the game, and their victory was well deserved. They should be proud of their performance and take confidence into their next round fixture against Mt Carmel.
Coach: Mr Joy
