Dear Parents/ Guardians,
I trust that all are as well as can be in these trying times. I am a little lost for words as it seems we overcome one crisis to land in another. I know that a number of our families were affected by the rain and flooding and many of our students have had issues of road closures and transport to and from school. I am extremely happy that the losses have only been of property and items that can be replaced, and not more serious. I am also aware of the strength that some people can muster from within themselves to carry on when life deals us such harsh times.
A big thank you to the Staff for the flexibility to again provide continuing education for the students as a priority during the disrupted week. And to all of the students who have once again had some disrupted learning.
We have had some water damage at the College with several classrooms being out of action until work is conducted to repair them. Some roof leaks, damaged carpets and ceilings will be fixed very quickly.
As we move to the second Sunday of the Easter season I wish everyone a safe and dry weekend and hope that all can re-charge the batteries with hope for a wonderful future.
THANK YOU - CAMPBELLTOWN CATHOLIC CLUB
Campbelltown Catholic club has been a tremendous support of Catholic schools in the Macarthur region for many decades. Over that time, they have assisted the funding of many small to mid-range maintenance and building projects in all of our schools.
This year John Therry Catholic College has been the recipient of a very generous gift from the Catholic club for refurbishment of school toilets, towards a sun shade structure and new carpet in the College Learning Centre. The grant totalled $150,000.00. As I am sure that all parents can remember, school toilet blocks are always in need of repair and improvement and this grant has allowed us to create a much better environment for the students. And with the College Library now a Learning Centre the upgraded carpet has been supplemented with new furniture and seating to make it central as an option to support student learning.
Below is the story from the Catholic club’s website.
More than $1 million has been donated to local schools and community groups by Campbelltown Catholic Club – despite all the lockdowns and restrictions.
For our schools, that means shade shelters, libraries, sporting grounds, and classroom upgrades.
For our community, that means charity fundraisers can still go ahead and sporting groups can get new uniforms and equipment.
The overarching message is that in spite of all the obstacles of 2020-21, the Club’s donations for that year totals $1,076,349.
“This makes us proud,” said Club President David McDonald. “The Club has continued to back its local school and community through these unprecedented COVID times and remains faithful to its charter.”
One of the biggest beneficiaries is John Therry Catholic College, to help provide vital new facilities at the ageing school in Rosemeadow.
“It is one of the oldest, and lowest socio-economic schools, in the Diocese and in need of maintenance,” said Principal Wayne Marshall. “These funds have made a huge difference to student well-being,” he said. “Fresh and new upgraded toilet facilities and an upgrade to our main learning space – the College Library – has been welcomed by all. The shade structure has also provided a welcome sun safe area for the students to enjoy.”
Campbelltown Catholic Club was founded in 1964 to help fund Catholic education in Macarthur and has so far given more than $32 million.
So, a great big THANK YOU to the wonderful Catholic club.
All school pick up zones are challening to navigate at the start and end of school day, and safety of students should always be our priority. Some important reminders are listed below to ensure our school pick up remains safe and effective.
1. We recommend parents pick up students at the front of the College, either on Demetrius Road or Anthony Drive where students can walk out and save parents having to turn in and out of the school. The extra exercise is good for students and minimises congestion.
2. Parents are welcome to use the internal pick-up bay, arriving after 3pm due to Primary pick up. Arrving before 3pm means Primary parents can be caught in queue's and are not able to pick up their children, blocking up the whole system.
3. We recommend avoiding picking up students from the back car park as entry and exit is difficult with the limited space in and out of the gate.
Thank-you for driving safely in and around our college.
Brad McAllister
Assistant Principal
We welcome all parents to join us at our P & F meeting on Tuesday 15th March starting at 6:30pm. We will share the results from our Girls Pants Survey and the final design, as well as discussing other updates and events. The meeting takes place in our staff common room and we will have a zoom option for any parents wishing to join remotely. We hope to see you there.
CHANGES TO PUBLIC HEALTH ORDERS (SELF ISOLATION)
Important changes to Public Health Orders relating to self-isolation requirements
The Health Minister has made the Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order 2022. The Order revokes and remakes the current Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order (No 4) 2021, with amendments:
- A household contact will only need to self-isolate for 7 days commencing from when the diagnosed person took the test, rather than 7 days from last contact with the diagnosed person (note that in practice this could end up being less than 7 days if the diagnosed person took a PCR test and it took a couple of days to get a positive result).
- A household contact is not obligated to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21 day period. This means that for 14 days after they complete their self-isolation period, a household contact is not obligated to self-isolate again if they are subsequently notified by another household contact.
- The change above only relates to self-isolation as a contact. If the household contact is diagnosed with COVID-19 they will need to self-isolate per the legal requirement for diagnosed cases, even if it is within the 21 day period.
- A person who had COVID-19 and later becomes a close contact or household contact does not need to self-isolate if it has been less than 8 weeks since they finished their self-isolation period (this is up from 28 days in the previous PHO).
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All NSW schools will sit NAPLAN online in 2022.
Our school will be participating in NAPLAN between 10 and 20 May 2022 (11/5/2022, 12/5/2022, 13/5/2022 & 18/5/2022)
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will also be participating in practice tests on 24/3/2022. The practice test is a trial run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked.
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN. Students will also do some practice in their English and Mathematics classes leading up to the event.
Each student will receive a letter with details about each test. If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact the College.

John Therry Swimming Carnival - Competitors Only
The 42nd Annual Swimming Carnival was reduced to competitors only at Bradbury Pool on Friday 4th March, 2022 . Friday we had over 150 students present, with more than 50% of the year 12 cohort there. The group had a great day, with Mr. Holmes organising a heap of activities to ensure that Year 12 had a great time ticking off another 'last ever' school event. Congratulations to all our swimmers, who had quick turnaround times for their events but still swum exceptionally well. A special thank you to the staff there on the day and those that assisted behind the scenes in ensuring the day ran smoothly. A big thank you also to the year 11 SLR students who assisted as officials on the day. Good luck to all our swimmers representing JTCC at the Diocesan Swimming Carnival next Friday 18th March.

Selection in the following sports: AFL (Girls), Baseball, Basketball, Cricket – Girls, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby, Softball, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball will need to be done via individual nomination and selections.
If your child has had an outstanding high level sporting achievement outside of school, we would love to hear from you. Please email me so we can celebrate their achievements with the JTCC community.
Yours in Sport,
