I want to publicly thank all parents for the way they have taken up the role of assisting their child with their learning. Parents have not replaced the teachers but are now playing a significant supporting role in maintaining a continuity of learning. Your role is crucial and will continue to be so as we move into Term 3 with a continuation of the current situation re social distancing and isolation. A big thank you to all parents.
Last year’s lockdown at John Therry made the school eerily quiet without the handball and basketball games, student chatter and laughter, and the learning noise that is usually so apparent. The Staff have very quickly moved into the remote learning role and have spent time up-skilling and reviewing the current continuity of learning plans and altering upcoming assessments and learning better ways to deliver learning remotely. I thank them very much as well.
So what did we learn from the last lockdown? We learnt that not all students were able to engage in remote learning because of a range of factors relating to technology, internet, family support capacity, number of children needing devices and much more. We learnt that the students who engaged in the remote lessons returned to school in a better position and achieved more upon return.
Significantly we learnt that the socializing aspect of face to face teaching with classmates was missed by almost all students. I remind all parents that the school is open with Staff allocated to supervise those students who attend and assist them accessing their remote lessons.
Let’s hope and pray that this situation is short term and we return to normal schooling quickly.
2022 SUBJECT PREFERENCES - YEAR 8 & 10
Year 10 Subject preferences
Year 10 students have received an email this week with instructions on completing their subject preferences for Year 11 2022 online. These are due to be submitted by Monday of Week 3 - 26th July.
Students have access to a handbook with detailed information on the courses to assist their decision making. KLA Coordinators have spoken at Year meetings throughout term 2 outlining the different courses and have been available for follow up discussions with students. We encourage students to contact their teachers if they have any follow up questions, and Mrs Ramchandra is available to discuss any questions about patterns of study.
Once the forms are all submitted we will finalise timetable lines and confirm final selections with students from Week 5.
We have course preference interviews planned for Monday 23rd August where parents and students can meet with our KLA leaders to finalise their subjects for 2022.
Year 8 Subject preferences
Year 8 students will receive an email shortly with their confirmed subject preferences for Year 9 2022. There is still the opportunity for students to change their preferences if there is room. Students can reply to their confirmation email if they wish to make a change. The vast majority of students have received their preferred electives but there are always clashes and subjects that do not run that mean some students might not receive their preferred courses. We will always work with students to try and ensure they can study their preferred courses so please contact Mrs Ramchandra if you have any concerns.
