COVID-19 UPDATE
Each week we hear of cases of covid in and around the College and the Macarthur community. Whilst we are not immune to the virus we certainly take the health and well being of the students very seriously. Our health protocols and hygiene strategies are in line with NSW Health and Diocesan guidelines.
All schools are currently within the Phase 3 Covid restrictions for schools. That is, students attend five days per week under covid restrictions. The main changes to the existing Phase Three rules were:-
- Students and Staff showing symptoms of being unwell MUST be sent home. Return can only occur after proof of a NEGATIVE Covid test.
- Students are to remain in Year group settings for all learning activities.
- Assemblies of 15 minutes can occur with restrictions.
- Schools are not to travel outside their geographic region – Macarthur.
- School based apprenticeships, traineeships and work placement continue with restrictions.
- All singing and sharing of wind instruments must cease.
- School formals, dances and social events are not permitted.
- All camps and retreats are suspended.
- Essential incursions can continue with restrictions.
- P&F and P/T/S interviews are only allowed via zoom etc
- Some inter-school events may be permitted under restriction.
A Year 12 Farewell Assembly WILL be allowed under restrictions. More details will be provided from the authorities soon.
I will be conducting a P&F information meeting via Zoom in Week 8 for interested parents. Details next week.
Below is a copy of the letter that went out to all parents.
HSC TRIAL EXAMS
These commenced on Monday and have progressed well throughout the week. I thank the Year 12 students for being prompt and following the instructions and guidelines of both NESA and the College.
STUDENT WELL BEING
We come to the end of Week 5 and the midpoint of Term 3. We recognize that our Year 12 has five weeks of normal school before the holidays and the HSC Exams that follow. We wish them well in this year that has been so disrupted and difficult.
Recent media stories have focused on the well being and mental health of students as a result of the remote learning and dislocation from school and friends. Surveys quoted talked of the increase in anxiety and stress caused by the disruption to learning and support systems.
The Staff at John Therry do care about the students and the effort to create relationships and demonstrate that care is obvious. Some students have returned to school and have had trouble returning smoothly to the system we have in place for learning and behavior management. These issues are being dealt with as they arise. Also please know that these are stressful times for many Staff who have some health issues, elderly family to care for or other personal circumstances that adds to their daily concerns.
However, we will all be working hard to ensure the best possible finish for Year 12, that the well being of all students and Staff is looked after and we continue to be a faith and learning community.
SEMESTER 1 ACADEMIC AWARDS
Congratulations to all students who were recognized with Semester 1 Academic Awards. These students make a commitment to do their best in the work that they do – not just complete it. This attitude then becomes the way they work and the results follow. They may make some sacrifices, they understand the road to success, in any field, is not easy. But they commit and are determined and results follow. It is never too late for all students to evaluate their commitment to their academic success.
