A GREAT TERM 2
As we come to the end of Term 2 I realise that a great deal has been achieved at John Therry by both the students and Staff. Quality teaching and learning is taking place and we move to the formal reporting period that will reflect this. The Staff have been very busy marking assignments and classwork in preparation for these.
We have also been through some very sad and draining times where the community has come together and provided support for those who needed it. I was particularly impressed by the care and respect shown by the students to each other in such times. Truly, John Therry is a special community and it is in the tough times that we are tested.
HALF YEARLY REPORTS and P/T/S INTERVIEWS
I ask that all parents read the Half Yearly Reports of their children and discuss the contents with them. Whilst schools have changed dramatically since you attended, research is clear that students with parents that take an interest in their child’s learning and progress, perform better.
We also have the opportunity to discuss the reports with the Staff on Thursday afternoon/evening and Friday morning. These discussions should be in two halves. The first describing where your child is presently in their learning journey and the second discussing ways forward to improved results.
CONGRATULATIONS TO SPORTS TEAMS
We have enjoyed another Term of sporting success in the MISA (Macarthur Independent Schools Association) competition. While all teams played well and several finished as runner up in their respective competitions, we congratulate the winners. More is in the sports section of the Newsletter.

PARENT / TEACHER / STUDENT INTERVIEWS TERM 2 2019
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews for Years 7-10 to be held on:
Thursday 4thJuly
Afternoon Session: 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Staff dinner break 5.30pm – 6.00pm (no interviews during this time)
Evening Session 6.00pm – 7.30pm
Friday 5thJuly
Morning Session:9am – 11am
These interviews are held as a follow up to the Year 7-10 Half Yearly Reports.
The interviews are an ideal opportunity to allow you to receive information about your child’s progress this year and to receive advice on how they can improve further throughout the 2019 academic year.
The booking of interviews is an online process. We hope that this makes it easier for parents to make interviews with teachers as you can see immediately when teachers are free and make interviews at times that are convenient for you, rather than relying upon interviews to be booked at school. Students, if required, can also book in the interviews while at school using the internet resources at John Therry.
The process for booking interviews is as follows:
Login to Sentral using the Parent Portal.
https://sentral.jtchsdow.catholic.edu.au/portal/login
Click on the link to Parent Teacher Night. Beside each class will be a button to allocate a time for the interview.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school.
We look forward to working with you in assisting your child to achieve their personal best in their learning.
Please support your child in their education by making attendance at this night a priority.
Students should attend these interviews in full Winter Uniform.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. Gavan Martyn
Co-ordinator of Teaching and School Operations

10-12 Boys Softball INTERZONE FINAL |
Mr Bodeker |
Lost VS Macarthur Anglican 16-1 Lost VS WCC 12-8 |
Unfortunately our open boys lost both games against quality opposition at the Interzone finals. Credit to Macarthur Anglican who played the perfect game against us and ended up winning the day comfortably. We produced a better performance in the second game against William Carey but unfortunately we lost in a close contest. The highlight of the day came from a Luke Kotsou solo home run. Everyone who played today is available for selection next season and we have all learnt a lot from the season. Thank you for a great season boys. |
Mixed Frisbee 7-9 Vs St Benedicts INTERZONE FINAL |
Mr Wakeling |
Lost Vs Broughton 9-5. Won Vs Freeman 16-3. |
We had a great day competing in our inter-zone finals. Unfortunately we lost our first game against Broughton 9-5. However we made multiple skill errors that cost us 14 points. Nonetheless the players never gave up and we scored just before full time. Our second game against Freeman Catholic College was interrupted by rain. This was our game and we played to our style, free moving and fast. In doing so we won this game 16-3. A great effort for the entire season well done. MVP Will Craig, Jayden Cook. |
7-9 Basketball Boys Vs Mount Carmel INTERZONE FINAL |
Mr Peters |
Won Vs Broughton 78-26 Won VS Thomas Hassall 55-44 |
Our Year 7-9 MISA team last week were undefeated MISA East Premiers defeating Mt. Carmel in the last minute. As a result they qualified to compete in the ‘Interzone Finals’. This was held on Tuesday June 25th at Minto Indoor Sports Stadium. It consisted of a three game competition in a round robin format, competing against the winning schools from MISA South and MISA North. The first game was against the undefeated MISA South Premiers Broughton Anglican College. The boys responded strongly with a 78-26 win. The second game was against the undefeated MISA North Premiers Thomas Hassall Anglican College. This proved much more difficult as they had a team representative players and coach from Camden Valley Association. Our boys stepped up winning 55-44. Prior to this, playing in the NSWCCC Qualifying tournament on Thursday 20th at Wollongong provided great experience. Our team leaders were; Liam Crain 50 pts, 15 rebounds, Devontay Zaglas 22 assists, Jude Narvais 5 steals and Goc Malual 5 Blocked shots. All our players scored and contributed in different ways. The team consisted of Devontay Zaglas, Tayvion Zaglas, Liam Crain, Kayne Nia, Kalan Nau, Jude Narvais, Goc Malual, Andrew Gemayell, Bailey Roberts, Kisione Tupola and Eli Matic who was sick but part of the team . I am very proud of their effort, teamwork and spirit. They were a pleasure to coach and simply refused to lose . Thank you to all the parents who attended each game. This is our second MISA Interzone Final Basketball win after we took out the Senior Boys Division in Term 1. For 2019, every MISA Basketball Boys team were undefeated both in their MISA East zone and the Interzone Finals. Well done to all these boys on an outstanding year. |
Opens Rugby League Vs Mount Carmel 1st place playoff |
Mr Tran + Mr McGrath |
Lost 28-12 |
Started the match off very well, the defense was strong, the team put in a great effort in defense. The effort was excellent throughout the match despite missing a number of players for the match. MVP: Callum Van Deisen |
Congratulations to our Interzone finalists - a fantastic effort to make it into the final. As per results above we came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in our three Interzone finals. Further in the rugby league we were understrength and played the final with 13 players. Despite this the Boys played with great John Therry Spirit and did the school proud.

MISA DANCE:
On Tuesday the 25th June, the MISA dance team got to showcase their talents at the MISA Dance Festival. Our team is made up of students across all year groups with a large number from year 7 which will lead to a strong team in the years to come. This year we all worked collaboratively to create a Jazz dance that showcases each students’ amazing ability in dance and acrobatics. We have the opportunity this year to perform again at a dance competition that will be held later in the year.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank and congratulate Casey-Lee Heard of year 12 as this will be her last year in MISA dance. Casey is a beautiful dancer with amazing talent and has been part of the MISA dance team for 3 years. She has helped choreograph dances and is a very enthusiastic member of our team.
From the students:
“This year our MISA Dance team worked together to create an upbeat jazz dance. On Tuesday we were able to go on stage and perform what we have been working hard on for the first 2 terms. We had a great day attending the MISA Dance festival, as we were able to watch the other schools performances, and then we were able to get up and showcase something we are passionate about, also proudly representing JT. Being in year 12, it was my last festival and I can say that I will remember it for years to come”.
Casey-Lee Heard (Year 12)
“MISA is about collaborating with everyone's ideas and cooperating with others to make a dance that everyone can enjoy. Everyone in our MISA dance team came to either perform or support our team in our latest performance on the 25/6/19 at the Cube, Catholic Club. On the day we had many other schools performing with us and having the privilege to perform there made it a great day”.
Baileigh Tonks and Danika Jones (Year 7)
RISING STAR: Bridget Shearer (Year 7)
On the 15th and 16th of June, Bridget Shearer (Year 7) competed at State competition for Sport Aerobics. Bridget walked away with 2 Gold medals and 1 silver medal. Which gave her an invitation to Nationals on the Gold Coast in August.
Bridget is now the State champion in the following categories: Secondary Yellow Junior Female, Secondary Audition Junior Yellow, further Bridget and her fitness team finished with a Silver medal at the championships. This gives Bridget an invitation to National Championships to the held at The Gold Coast in August.
Bridget will be completing against girls much older than her in Secondary Junior titles (which is for athletes years 7-9).
A fantastic achievement, considering Bridget also competed at the State CCC Cross Country representing the Wollongong Diocese on the 14th of June. John Therry wishes Bridget all the best in all of her routines.
