HSC SHOWCASE EVENTS EXCURSIONS
Our Senior Creative Arts students with Staff experienced excursions over the last week to experience HSC Showcase events in Drama, Music and Visual Arts respectively. The HSC Showcases celebrate student achievement by reflecting on the creativity and innovation of HSC students. Each year NESA features a selection of the top HSC major works across Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Technologies and English.
In 2022 there will is one OnSTAGE program featuring group and individual performances, script writing and video drama by 2021 HSC Drama students. The season runs from Monday 14 February to Friday 18 February 2022 in the York Theatre, Seymour Centre. The OnSTAGE exhibition features exemplary individual projects by HSC Drama students. Projects include costume, lighting and set design, promotion and program, and critical analysis. Exemplary individual projects by HSC Drama students were also on exhibition in the foyer of the York Theatre, Seymour Mrs. Cascarino and Miss Abela took the Year 12 Drama class to experience ‘ONSTAGE’ at the Seymour Centre on Friday 18th February from 7-9.30pm. Miss Abela stated;’ OnStage has provided our students with the opportunity to experience the highest calibre of Drama performances and projects from 2021. This year the program included video drama and scriptwriting (normally a separate exhibit) which was a welcome opportunity for some of our Video Drama students. The drive home was abuzz with discussion of their favourite moments and how they can incorporate similar techniques and conventions in their own projects this year. The OnStage exhibition has highlighted the resilience and passion of creative arts students across the state and in turn and has been a true source of inspiration for our 2022 Drama students.’
ENCORE is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the HSC Music examinations presented by the NSW Education Standards Authority and the NSW Department of Education. On Tuesday 22nd February, Mrs. Morton took several Year 11 and 12 Music students to see the Matinee performance at 12.30pm. Mrs. Morton stated; ‘JT's own listened to amazing singers, talented soprano recorders, brass quartets and violinist and pianist. Having accessed this opportunity, has given light to the students queries about their HSC major work, inspiration to put in hard work as well as adoration of the talent on stage. It is a pleasure and a privilege to have engaged in discussions about the performances on the train home!’
ARTEXPRESS is an annual exhibition of exemplary artworks created by students for the HSC in Visual Arts. The works represent a broad range of subject matter, approaches, styles and media including painting, photomedia, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, documented forms, textiles and fibre, ceramics, time-based forms and collections of works. ARTEXPRESS represents the high standards and diversity achieved by Year 12 Visual Arts students in New South Wales schools and is a joint partnership between the NSW Education Standards Authority and the NSW Department of Education. On Thursday February 17th both Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts students, escorted by Mrs. Hume and Mr. Peters visited the Art Gallery of NSW to view the ‘Artexpress’ exhibition. In conjunction with this, the Year 11s focussed on themes from their unit of work; ‘The Artist and the Patron’, while Year 12 examined more contemporary works from their unit of work ‘The Biennale’. As Mrs. Hume stated; Artexpress is an annual dynamic exhibition experience that our seniors enthusiastically attended. This year 12 Visual Arts class reviewed the enthralling and creative works of the 2021 HSC students to be a point of motivation and inspiration for their upcoming Bodies of work. It is with gratitude that my class and myself reflect upon the exhibition excursion’.
At John Therry Catholic High, we believe in providing opportunities to develop skills that will prepare our students for whatever field of endeavour they choose. Our Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) students are taught complex problem solving, critical thinking and creativity, all skills believed to be at the core of tomorrow’s leaders. Thank you to all our enthusiastic CAPA staff on making these opportunities possible and all the students on their exemplary behaviour at these events.

Creative Arts Leader of Learning
On the 16th of February Year 7 were fortunate enough to participate in camp at Teen Ranch. With camp being so early in the school year, it is used as a platform for students to build new friendships and connections with peers and teachers, develop life long skills and challenge themselves physically and mentally.
Over the three days and two nights students would participate in activities such as canoeing, climbing, giant swing, swimming skills, bush skills, horse riding and archery. Through each activity they were guided by their learning group mentors and Teen Ranch leaders to ensure that they would develop leadership skills, overcome obstacles and build confidence within themselves.
During the first evening of camp, year 7 received a visit from their College House Leaders who were continuing a long running tradition at John Therry Catholic College. During the evening students were able to share a meal and conversation with the leaders which gave them an opportunity to gain an insight into Leadership at JTCC. After sharing meals with the leaders, students participated in a liturgy and were led through house chants with individual leaders. Many students utilised the activity to build a stronger relationship with their house and build house spirit.
Overall the camp was a great opportunity for students and teachers to move past barriers such as fears and experience a new challenge. These lifelong skills enable students to have confidence in themselves and achieve goals that they previously may have thought could not be achieved.

“Camp was important to me because it cemented me with a whole bunch of people that I wouldn't normally surround myself with.
Camp made me experience things that you wouldn't necessarily do in your everyday life. Teen Ranch was a good place to go camping for the start of the year because it includes everybody in everything that other people are doing.
My favourite moment of going to Teen Ranch was everything, starting from rock climbing to horse riding because I knew I wasn't doing it alone. If it was my first time it was also someone else's first time. The staff at Teen Ranch were also really encouraging when we were doing our activities.
At the start of camp I thought it would be a bit challenging making friends but also connecting with others that l don't normally put myself with and this camping trip really changed the way l see that. I became friends with my whole homeroom group and it was amazing.”
Student: Tyleaha Tomkins
“Camp was important to me because I overcame some fears of mine which are heights. I was able to participate in the giant swing which was personally scary for me but my peers were there for me and cheering me on. That's what got me to get the courage to do it and it made me feel good about myself.
There were a whole bunch of people there I didn't know and people I wouldn't normally play with but I only hung out with the group of people I usually hang out with. My favourite part about camp was the Teen Ranch Staff. They were really helpful and kind. They cooked our meals everyday, our breakfast, lunch and our dinner. The food was so delicious and they were even more kind by even letting us participate in some activities like rock climbing, horse riding and many more. Now that's stuff that you probably don't do in your everyday life, for me the hardest thing for me at camp was socialising. Socialising is not really my thing. I just like to draw or do something quiet in my own space. I usually don't talk a lot either. It was hard because of how many people were there talking to each other there and i got jealous because they had the courage to go talk, I didn't but i was being myself and that's all that matters. Though overall camp was fun and I enjoyed it, I hope I will get to go back soon!”

“Wow! camp is just phenomenal. I cant believe the amazing things I got to experience, and got to do such as rock climbing, giant swing and canoeing. The positivity and smiling faces puts everyone in a bright and happy mood . Something I loved about this camp is the amount of opportunities you have and to be out there and give everything ago as well as overcoming fears. You can always rely on the amazing instructors for guidance and help and they will be there when you need them. Overall I think that camp was a really fun and crazy experience and I got to bond with new people and make many new friends along the way.”
JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Week 5
There were ominous clouds brewing all day, but we managed to go ahead with only a short shower of rain just before the end of the day. MISA round 2 went ahead for sports scheduled indoors, with mixed results again for our teams. Overall positive feedback from the coaches, with improvements shown by all teams since last week. Remember, students who missed out on MISA or , there are many future opportunities to represent JTCC, keep an eye out on the Sport Bulletin Board in the A-block corridor and on the Compass Newsfeed.
The behaviour and participation from the majority was great, with everyone embracing the directive for this year to ‘be like Barty’. A reminder that consent for all sporting events must be given via the Parent Portal on Compass. Please ring the school if you have issues logging in or accessing Events.
