JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 3, Week 7 & 8
Early in Term 4 we have a number of Diocesan carnivals that JTCC has entered - Junior boys cricket, junior boys and girls AFL and basketball (Junior/Senior boys and girls). Announcements for trials for these teams will be published on Compass over the next week.
Week 8 saw a number of our MISA teams play off in minor and grand final matches in so damp conditions. Teams finished their Term 3 season with a great cumulation of hard work across the term and the majority of our JTCC teams had a win, with the U15 boys Rugby League, Senior Boys AFL and 7/ 8 Boys Soccer teams returning victorious as MISA Champions for term 4. Final standings and overall Champion House points will be included in next fortnight's newsletter.
A few general reminders:
- Students who missed out on MISA or DIO teams , there are many future opportunities to represent JTCC, keep an eye out on the Compass Newsfeed.
- Any students that would like to request to change groups for 9/10 REC - you need to see Mrs. Roberts at the Sports Office. You must do this prior to Tuesday lunch time.
- A reminder that consent for all sporting events must be given via the Parent Portal on Compass. Please ring the school if you have issues logging in or accessing Events.

The match started off well with MAS first batting pair getting no runs and we fielded great. They were able to get to 92 as we failed to capitalise on our chances. With the bat, it just wasn’t our day. MAS took half a dozen spectacular catches and everything went there way. We only managed 21 runs and we’re outplayed by the better team on the day. Semi-final vs. MCCC 6- 4 WIN |
This week our John Therry girls played off for a Grandfinal spot against Mount Carmel Catholic College. The game was played in wonderful spirit, yet was very close the whole way through. At the end of the first Innings JT were ahead 2-1. By the end of the second innings the score was 4-3 in the way of John Therry, with the final score being a 6-4 win to our JT superstars. Some highlights include a double play by Allanda Lumagui and consistent pitching, strong hitting and aggressive base running by Grace Tutunoa. With several players out due to other commitments I was fortunate enough to have three Year 12 students kindly volunteer to fill in for the day. We started extremely well and kicked clear thanks to some good goals from Dechlan, Miguel and Lucas. It was a physical game but lapses in concentration enabled Macarthur to get back into the game. Despite being the better team for the majority of the game the boys only just won after a flurry of late goals to Macarthur. A decent performance, but also a good wake up call for them moving towards the finals. MVP: Jayden Cook and Noah McKenzie |

vs. BAC 35 - 41 LOSS |
The girls began at a disadvantage with only 8 players total. Fighting against consistent fresh legs from Broughton, the girls showed spirit with a 33-19 lead at half time but burned out at the very end of the game with a buzzer beater kick from the opposition that put us down 41-35. Consolation can be found with Shanae Morrison discovering a new talent for taking marks and kicking goals and earning our MVP for this week! MVP: Shanae Leech-Morrison |

Semi-final vs. MAS 41 - 7 WIN |
It was a very enjoyable afternoon coaching the intermediate netball team. The team were off to a strong start, focusing on controlling the play and spacial awareness, they were able to secure a comfortable lead of 12-1 in the first quarter. The game continued and the John Therry team maintained their level of control and focus, winning every quarter considerably, the game was fast paced and exciting. The MacArthur Anglican team changed up their positions in the last quarter which challenged us at some points but the John Therry girls held it together with an outstanding 41-7 defeat. Well done team, I am in awe of the talent and skill you all have, your ability to perform well in any position on the court was exceptional and a talent that not many Netball players have. vs. St. Pats 3-1 WIN |
The girls represented true John Therry spirit with unfailing determination and passion today against St Pats'. The girls got off to a shaky start which resulted in our team trailing 1-0 at half time, this understandably led to frustrations and disheartening morale. Despite being behind on the scoresheet at half-time, the girls demonstrated relentless work rate and a surge of attacking prowess after going back on the pitch. After creating numerous chances, a goal from captain Jorja Hohberg and two from year 7 breakthrough players Olivia Smith and Briana Lobos-Zuniga put JTCC in a 3-1 lead which ended up being the final score. An inspired performance from Isabella Drake and Anastasia Ribicic, both of whom deserves a special mention for putting in a shift in their respective positions, but it was another Year 7 talent, Ava Abi-Khattar, who stole the show with the best RWB performance so far this season, even setting up the comeback goal. Best performance of the season. Again, dominated possession and field position, but struggled to score. Still 0-0 with 13 minutes of the game to go. A long time coming for the boys to finally get their first win. After a few frustrating weeks of under performing the mighty green team finally put a team to the sword. Coming from a goal down, the boys rallied to score three goals thanks to a brace from Riley Oitmann and an 18 yard banger from Cohan Timmer. Well done to the boys on their maiden win. Finished 3rd overall A great win to finish off the season with a win over BAC. We won the toss and elected to bowl. Although our bowling alley wasn’t great at times, as a team we fielded extremely well and were able to generate momentum with run outs. When batting we cruised to victory, surpassing Broughton’s score with 3 overs in hand. MVP: Maxwell Whelan |

Grand final vs. St. Pats 0 - 8 LOSS |
Finished 2nd overall Our JT senior girls softball team headed into their grand final contest against St Pats with visions of grandeur. The vibe on the bus out to the venue was nothing short of electric! Seemingly, St Pats did not get the memo about our intentions for a win and today our team were met by a well polished pitcher-catcher combination. The girls demonstrated some impressive moments throughout the game which included a double play along with some strong hitting. Although galant in their efforts, it was not our day and unfortunately we could not bring the illustrious trophy home for Mrs Roberts, Mr Bodeker and Alana Kitson (on her last day at JT). The end result was 8-0 in the way of St Pats. MVP went to Gese Satuatasi for her consistent efforts both on and off the diamond Mrs “Farewell Alana” White MVP: Gese Satuatasi |

Grand final vs. MAG 16-10 |
1st - MISA Champions The U15's Rugby League season culminated with a gritty 16-10 win against Magdalene Catholic College. Both teams had impressive starts with great contact and line speed from the opening set. Magdalene got on the board early with a slick try, however a bone rattling tackle from Filipe put the team into gear to score an equalizer. JT scored quickly before the half time to put them up 8-4. The second half began exactly like the first, with great first contact from Jerome, Cole and Chaise sending shockwaves through the Magdalene forward pack. Unfortunately some mistakes led to Magdalene taking the lead 10-8 early in the 2nd half. The team settled and some slick hands from the backline led to Jordan Truckle scoring his second try of the day. Strong defence once again led to Nate crossing over on the sideline to take the lead out to 16-10. Some late game heroics from Magdalene were put to a stop with excellent tackling and hustle from the team. Excellent season from all involved! MVP: Tyler Sharpe and Jerome Gargoles |

Grand final vs. MAS 42 - 25 WIN |
1st - MISA Champions In slippery conditions JT pulled through in a cracking game of Aussie Rules. In a very physical game JT started well with Noah, Dechlan and Miguel dominating the middle/forward, as well as Zac, Sonny and Ben’s tough defence. After halftime the boys were down 25-23 with around 5 minutes left, before the likes of Luke, Angus and Brendan nailing some clutch goals to seal the deal 43-25. Full credit to the boys for pulling through and lifting the trophy as well as a big thanks to all the supporters coming down to watch. MVP: Brendan Thomas |

Finished 3rd overall This week we played for third position. The girls came out strong with Annelise Hall and Allyssa Barry turning over ball in the defence end. The connection between Shanae De Vos, Georgia Bastock and Ayla Cook was unrivalled. The speed and quick ball movement ensured the attack end perfect position on the circle to feed Navara Mataipule, our MVP for this week. Navara’s shooting accuracy was high and her ability to rebound and move the ball around the circle to gain prime position ensured the girls took out the win, 37-14, placing them third overall in the MISA 2023 competition. Finished 3rd overall The finals saw the Year 7/8 MISA netball team verse MCC in a competitive game. The game finished with a 20-All draw! With no extra time being played, the JT Girls ended the comp with a 3rd place finish. The whole team played strong, fierce and gave their all! Our MVP for the finals game is Chloe Donovan for her consistent effort and winning intercepts. * In accordance with MISA rules, if the score is drawn, the team with the highest place on the ladder is declared champion - which is JTCC and means we finished up with 3rd overall. Minor final vs. MAS 2 - 0 |
Finished 3rd overall Terrific work from the girls once again, this time playing in the minor finals against Macarthur Anglican School. The strides in improvement that the team as a whole have made over the past few weeks is nothing short of exceptional. As the final game of the term came to a close, John Therry finished on a high note with another victory added to the win streak. A brilliant goal from top scorer and captain, Jorja Hohberg, put us ahead before some brilliant offensive pressure gifted a chance for young Olivia Smith who made no mistake in front of goal to extend the scoreline to a comfortable 2-0 lead. The game was riddled with chances following this, with our girls shutting down every chance the opposition created. Considering how tight the match was in our previous meeting, it was evident how much work our girls have put in on the training ground. Great win for the whole team with special credit going to Alice Stephenson of Year 7 who was the uncontested MVP thanks to her incredible performance in all areas of the pitch. 1st - MISA Champions Congratulations to the Junior Boys soccer team. Undefeated through the season, minor premiers and winner of the Final. The boys played like men, with tha full use of the substitutes bench and all layers contributing equally to the victory. Goals from Jaidon and Charbel sealed the match. A tremendous save from Luke in goals kept their scoreline to zero. Well done with a special mention for Team Manager Jacob Lipscombe. Presentation - Assembly Week 7
The last assembly that we recognised sporting achievements was all the way back in week 7, term 1. This assembly we recognised and acknowledged Wollongong Diocese Representatives from Term 1 -3, Cross Country and Athletics Age Champions, as well as our MISA Sportsperson of the Week for Term 1 and 2. One point I want to echo from the assembly was the overwhelmingly positive feedback I have received after many of our representative events, both for our athletes and our student helpers who are assisting with these events. This has not only come from the JT staff who are out there with you, but also from teachers from other schools and parents from other school communities. This makes me immensely proud of the conduct and integrity our JT sporting community upholds.
We will be announcing the School Carnival Winners and the Spencer Trophy for Champion sporting house at the Week 10 assembly. Murray were the 2021 winners, will they be able to retain their stranglehold over the JT carnivals? All other sporting achievements and success will be celebrated at the 2022 Sports Assembly at the end of Term 4.

Staff vs. Students
A week of highly competitive physical and mental challenge kicked on in Week 7 with the annual staff vs. students competition.
Monday started with a double header, basketball and netball. Staff were victorious in the netball game, whilst students claimed a surprising victory in basketball. We also saw the basketball icon Mr. Peters taking a tumble, but nothing will stop him from bouncing back.
A victory on Tuesday in trivia saw the staff take back the lead, but students were confident heading into Wednesday’s Oztag game. Some controversial refereeing calls by Luke Denniss saw the students come back with a late charge after Mr. Bodeker missed a vital tag on the speed demon Elise Farrant. She scored a late try in the final minutes with the game concluding in a 2 all draw. There was a sighting of Zac Morheb so exhausted after the game that he couldn’t recover enough to attend class and signed out early to go home and rest.
From then on the staff were too slick for the students, making their sporting ability known in the Soccer and Frisbee games. However, some extremely controversial actions from Mr. Bodeker may have won them the series with some backstage bribery.
Mr. Williamson, the Frisbee God himself was in elite form on Friday, landing at least 4 goals for the staff. At the end of the week staff were victorious with a total tally of 16 championship points to students 8. Overall it was a fun and highly emotive week of staff vs students. Well done to everyone involved, including our Trivia master Mr. Golebiewski, Year 11 referees and especially to the Sports Captain Jayden Cook for assisting in the smooth running of the week.

Please note that some sports are selected by individual trials, and these can be held throughout NSW. Individual nominations require students to make their own way to and from selections.
Selection in the following sports: Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Touch Football, AFL (Boys) and Football are done through the Wollongong Diocese carnivals by way of representing John Therry at these respective carnivals.
Selection in the following sports: AFL (Girls), Baseball, Basketball, Cricket – Girls, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby, Softball, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball will need to be done via individual nomination and selections.
