This month, Jo-Anne Donaldson (leader of learning for science faculty), completed her Master Teacher Fellowship.  The Fellowship was undertaken through Amgen Biotech Experience and is designed to address the need of supporting the development of teachers who have a passion for biotechnology.

Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) is an innovative science education program that introduces students to the excitement of scientific discovery and builds bridges between school and the real-life biosciences. 

Jo-Anne was one of 12 international Master Fellows who had access to experts from Amgen staff and other STEM-focused organisations around the world, and reflected on their own goals for leadership. After an intensive 1-year program, Fellows shared their expertise and curriculum with the ABE international community. 

The curriculum project that Jo-Anne produced was aimed specifically at Stage 6 Investigating Science students.  The project included a research activity comparing domestic and international regulations and codes of conduct surrounding scientific research.  Students worked in small groups, then reported their research findings back to the rest of the class.  Students then evaluated and assessed the regulations and codes of conduct of different areas of scientific research. Year 12 Investigating Science students thoroughly enjoyed this task and the collaborative nature of the learning.

Jo-Anne was in the second cohort of this international fellowship, Dr Aidan Johnson was in the first cohort.   Jo-Anne and Aidan have been invited to apply for a $2000 grant each, to develop a curriculum resource which leads science education into the future at John Therry Catholic College.

Jo-Anne and Aidan will also have the opportunity to attend an ABE conference in 2023.  The conference is to be held in San Francisco and gives educators an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from all over the world.
