NEWSLETTER SPORT UPDATE - Term 2, week 8

MISA - FINALS and catch up rounds

This week we had a number of teams in finals, with two teams playing off in grand finals; 7- 9 Boys Basketball, 10-12 Girls Indoor Cricket. Both teams were victorious, and crowned MISA East Champions. Congratulations!   We have a real mixed process of how we are finalising results this term due to weather interruptions. If teams didn’t play finals this week, the winner and thus the team that progresses to Interzone Final is based on overall  points from the  rounds. The 7 - 9  Boys Hockey team will play off in the MISA East Grand Final next week, with no Interzone Final scheduled for hockey due to other zones not having teams.  The Senior Rugby League team will play their missed round 2 game against FCC, then overall winner will be based on championship points.  Final Results and places will be announced in next week's newsletter.

Next week we have the following teams progressing to Interzone Finals - 11/12 boys Soccer, 7-9 Boys Basketball and 10-12 Girls Indoor Cricket. Good luck teams!

JTCC Win

Round 2 vs. MCCC

A gutsy effort from the boys today to get the win, playing with only 13 men. The boys showed JT PRIDE, representing the school exceptionally well and working for one another in defence. Garry smith was too hard to handle out wide, with Tekyn and Wayne leading the middle. A special thanks to Taz Reynolds who filled in today to ensure that we could field a team! Looking forward to the finals next week!

FINAL

1st JT v 2nd St. Pat

When playing finals you want your team peaking at the right time, and we did just that! The girls started the game sharply, effecting three run outs and taking a good catch in the first two overs. Some good batting from St Pat's followed, as their second skin scored 34 on their way to a team total of 84.

Heading into bat, our girls were slightly nervous but a solid start from Maddie and Zarli settled the nerves as all of our batting partnerships contributed to our score and our overall win.

A great effort and a well deserved Zone victory!

3rd JT v 4th MCCC

A great win by the JT boys to secure 3rd spot in the competition. We played great as a team and we were too classy beating an undermanned MCCC 5-2.

JT v MAG

We came into the game with a must win attitude, heading towards the Interzone finals. Started the game out strong with 3 solid goals, before letting Magdalene get one goal in the second half. Overall boys played really strongly.

Replay Round 2

JT v MAG

The girls played very well against a tough Magdalene side. With players injured and other absences we only had one substitute.

The girls played a good game of football, passing the ball around well and making some critical challenges. Two good goals from Magdalene saw the game end with a 2-0 loss.

A tough defeat but it was great to see the girls improve over the season.

MVP: Jess Siby and Tameka Thorne

FINAL

1 st JT v 2nd MCCC

Our opposition came to play in the hardest game of the year. Down at half time, for the first time this year, the team ignited the JT sporting spirit and applied the heat when it counted, making clutch plays under the most pressure! They found a way against all the adversity together. Thank you to all players and our supporters at the game today. Play hard, play smart, have fun!

MVP: Garang Bol

7-9 GIRLS BASKETBALL

Finished 5th overall - Congratulations girls

Replay Round 2

JT v MAG

Going into the last game of the season the boys needed to win to take home the trophy. Unfortunately they were outclassed by a strong Magdalene. The game was one sided but the boys held on to only lose 1-0. Throughout the season they have improved out of sight and showed real pride in representing John Therry in a unfamiliar sport. Well done to the boys on a successful season finishing second overall

MVP: Darcy Wilson

7-9 MIXED FRISBEE

Mr. Bodeker

JTCC Win

Replay Round 2

JT v MAG

It was a windy afternoon out in Minto making it difficult for Ultimate Frisbee. Despite this, John Therry managed to outclass their opposition to win 22-2 against Magdalene. John Therry will most likely proceed to the Interzone finals next week. All players worked extremely well as a team, combining for some silky and effective passing. A special mention to Cody Meisenhofen and Erin Murtz for showcasing their excellent skills.

MVP - Erin Murtz who was instrumental in our dominant win today.  Well done all.

After winning the Diocesan pathways soccer competition back in April students entered the draw into the CCC NSW Knockout Competition in their age group. With the upset the boys caused on the Dio carnival day the odds were stacked against John Therry to progress to the next stage with a game against the parramatta dio winners. The students kicked off their campaign with a game against Corpus Christi. After an end to end start the boys set the tempo of the game. Some good build up play by our midfielders lead to a great half volley from Logan Gibson to put us in the lead. Corpus Christi tried to mount a comeback but on the break we managed to score through Thomas Stevenson to give us the win. After Knocking out Corpus Christi we turned our attention to the final game against Edmund Rice. Having narrowly beat Edmund Rice in the Dio Carnival day we know we had a tough game ahead. From the kick off Edmund Rice controlled the game and John Therry were just holding on until an inserting run from the right wing into our own box led to a penalty. Unfortunately Edmund Rice capitalized on this opportunity and took the lead. They continued to dominate possession which resulted in an early goal after half time. The boys fought to try and get back in the game, but the goal we desperately needed came too late with a good ball in behind from Xavier Martin tapped home by Thomas Stevenson with only a minute remaining. The result stayed at 2-1 but we finished the game on a high and a bunch of optimism. Well done to the boys for all their efforts.

MVP: Mitchell Mackenzie

NSW All Schools Football Championship

Xavier_Martin.jpeg
Xavier Martin participated in the NSW All Schools Trials on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th June 2021 in the U16 NSWCCC team. He played 3 games over the two days.NSWCCC U16 team was undefeated and won the tournament.

Unfortunately as the NSW Combined High Schools did not send an U16s team, they did not pick an U16 All Schools team. Xavier would have been very close to making this team, as he had an outstanding tournament.

NSWCCC Opens Football

Picot_Patrick_2021.jpeg

Congratulations to Patrick Picot, our College Sports Captain,  who got a late call up to the NSWCCC Team to compete at the NSW All Schools Championship  on Monday and Tuesday. Despite the team not doing so well, Pat, who is returning from injury said he performed really well, keeping up with the NPL1 and academy players.

NSWCCC Cross Country

JTCC had 4 students representing the Wollongong Diocese at the NSWCCC Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek on Tuesday.

  • Darcy Wilson  ran in the 15 years boys race, and finished a great race, ending up in a very respectable 12th place out of 63 runners. He was only 4 seconds shy of finishing in a top 10 position! He then proceeded to return to school for MISA 7-9 Hockey, having a cracker game and claiming MVP. What a day!
  • Jaidon Cosmidis had his first race at CCC level in the 12 years boys, finishing 41 out of 60.
  • Lachlan Vacchini ran in the 17-19 years boys multi-class category and despite finding the course “super hard”, he finished up in 4th spot.
  • Dominic Baker ran in the 12-14 years boys multi-class category and claimed 4th place (1st in his age group - 13 years).
