DO IT FOR DOLLY DAY - 10 MAY
Do it for Dolly Day on the 10 May recognises the Dolly’s Dream Foundation which aims to educate young people on the harms of bullying and harassment particularly Online bullying and covert bullying.
Cyber bullying is when someone engages in offensive, menacing or harassing behaviour through the use of technology. It can happen to people at any age, anytime and often anonymously and it hurts people and can ruin lives.
The Foundation was created in memory of Amy Dolly Everett, a 14 year old girl who lost her life as a result of relentless bullying. “Do it for Dolly Day” is an anti-bullying initiative aimed at raising awareness of bullying particularly online bullying.
As a result Dolly’s Law has now been enforced and trolls and cyberbullies in NSW face up to five years in jail under the law change. This law now applies to all those sending abusive emails, posting threatening or hurtful messages, pictures or videos online.
We need to educate everyone about the importance of treating everyone with respect and kindness. We need to encourage our students to stand up against bullying and harassment and report any concerning behaviours online.
I encourage everyone to look at the Dolly’s Dream website at www.dollysdream.org.au.
It contains Fact Sheets that may be of help to both Parents/Carers and students.
John Therry Catholic High School is an eSmart school. Being eSmart means knowing how to guard against security and privacy risks online, download content in a legal and responsible way, research and reference information, as well as manage reputation and relationships in cyberspace.
Any incidents that occur outside of school hours we strongly encourage parents to seek Police intervention.
