JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 3 Week 7 + 9:
What better way to finish off the term by having an EPIC SPORTS UPDATE.
JTCC moved into the semi finals of the competition in a good position with 7 out of 9 teams competing for a grand final berth.
As it turned out, three teams competed in the 3rd v 4th Playoff match to conclude their season with all teams failing to get the win, although well done to the 7-9 Girls Soccer team who secured a draw. Commiserations to our 10-12 Boys Cricket team and our 9/10 Girls Netball team.
John Therry has been fairly well represented in Term 3 Finals over the years, this year was no different. Four teams competed and we did not lose a game.
Congratulations to our 7/8 Boys Soccer team who defeated Magdalene 2 - 1.
Congratulations to our 10 - 12 Boys AFL team who defeated Macarthur Anglican School 73 - 52.
Congratulations to our U15 Boys Rugby League team who defeated Magdalene 12 - 8.
Congratulations to our 9/10 Boys Soccer team who secured a 0 - 0 draw against Mt Carmel. MCCC are the premiers as the finished higher on the table after the competition.
So three MISA Premierships is a fantastic effort by the teams. Well done to all or our student representatives who competed and represented the College to the best of their ability.

We played against MAS for a place in the grand Final. After a solid start with the ball, the pressure started to build on John Therry and we began to make silly errors, missing catches and gifting the opposition runs. While batting, we were in the box seat, however, some poor batting mixed with good fielding by the opposition meant that we came up short in the end. |

Today’s match against Mount Carmel started as a tough and tight contest, with the first half ending 28-22 John Therry’s way. Knowing the score was close, and with the support of our girls AFL team, our players rose to the occasion, scoring another 49 point with goals to Riley, Ethan, Coby, Sully, Jayden and Felipe. The game was fast paced and exciting to watch. A special mention to Ethan who was our MVP today. He is often one of the smallest on the field but plays with the most courage and kicked 4 match-winning goals today.

Best performance of the season. Did well to come from fourth place to beat the comp winners convincingly. Strong teamwork and excellent finishing with a hat-trick to Cooper Marshall and a goal from Jaidon Cosmidis. Look forward to the final next week. |

Another great performance from the boys in such a crucial game in the season. Going up against a big and physical Thomas Hassal side was never going to be easy, fortunately our boys pulled off their best performance of the season and went into the half with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Levi Fitpatrick (Noah Cook with the assist). Our backline was solid all game, with Floilan, Lucas and Cooper keeping their dominant players at bay. In the end the boys held on to a 2-0 win and the margin could’ve been even greater. Looking forward to seeing the boys in their grand final next week. |

What a game!!! When we first played this team there was a huge margin - today was a close fought game and our JT girls fought for the whole game. Even at the end of the first quarter, then we lost the second, but fought back in the third to win that quarter. Unfortunately Magdalene ran away with the win in the last, but in a 1v4 game where we were fourth, we certainly scared them! |

3 v 4 Playoff - JTCC v Magdalene JT played against Magdalene for 3rd place in the indoor Cricket Competition. Our JT boys started well with the bat, and were consistent in keeping the score ticking over. Unfortunately, we had one partnership that struggled to score and this put pressure on us in the field. In the field there was lots of effort and we took some great catches to keep the game relatively tight. We just didn’t have enough runs on the board and Magdalene got away from us right at the end. |

FINAL - JTCC v MAS @ Clarke Today's game was a well played game by all members on the field, the boys worked together as a team to come up with a very memorable win. The score was consistent the whole game keeping a strong lead. Well done to our goal scorers, Angus O’dwyer (3), Riley Oitmann (3), Cohan Timmer and Coby Hilton. Thank you to the defensive players who play such a selfless role and majorly assisted in our win today. We had many players mark crucial intercept balls such as Cohan Timmer with 3, Coby Hilton with 4 and Cooper Wells with 3. Our midfield was strong today with Diego Martin as Ruck getting us almost every hit out and taking massive runs through the midfield. Overall a great game to spectate. Most valuable player today goes to Diego Martin for his outstanding efforts all over the field. Well done boys. |

FINAL - JTCC v MCCC @ Kooringa Well done on a strong end to what will ultimately be a disappointing season. We were restricted by the opposition, and especially some of their spoiling tactics, still almost doing enough to win the game. It could have gone either way, particularly with Cooper Marshall showing composure to release a fine shot that beat the keeper but hit the post. The nature of the competition and limited time meant that a draw in the finals awarded the trophy to the higher placed team. Hence, while the score was a draw and we had the better of the game, the premiership was not to be. Frustrating for all students and a case of what ifs and maybes. |

FINAL - JTCC v Magdalene @ Ambarvale After our best performance of the season, the boys went into their grand final confident they could defeat Magdalene. The boys started strong and began dominating in midfield with Lucas Alvarado, Billy Wilson and Lucas Faila combining well with some short sharp passing. After a few semi chances, Lucas Alvarado played a long diagonal ball to Kayden Thompson who beat his defender and beat the keeper to take a 1-0 lead into half time. Unfortunately early in the second half we gave away a foul outside the box and their captain stepped up and scored a long range goal to make it 1-1. With 10 minutes to go, Levi Fitzpatrick managed to pounce on a pass and neatly tucked the ball into the bottom corner to restore our lead. It was a nervy 10 minutes, but the boys were able to hold on for a deserved win and a premiership. Shoutout to all the boys in the team who played a part in our premiership season, they’ve been a pleasure to coach and I couldn’t be happier with their attitude and skill. Thanks for a great season. |

3 v 4 Playoff - JTCC v St Patrick’s College @ Ambarvale After a terrific start to the campaign, we ended the season with a goalless draw against St Patrick’s College. It was certainly an improved performance from our girls with a multitude of chances created, however, it was clearly evident that our back-to-back losses against Mt Carmel had adversely impacted our confidence in front of goal. The poor goal conditions combined with the loss of momentum in the first half and some controversial decisions in the second resulted in us failing to convert any big chances. It was a tough season but one we can improve on in the next. |

With only a bare 7 players, we played hard against some tricky calls, and continued to hold a close score. We played our last quarter with only 6 due to injury, yet still maintained a respectful score. |

FINAL - JTCC v Magdalene @ Eschol Park For the last game of the season and the importance of the occasion, the game had it all. We asked the boys to work on a few things over the last few weeks and they did their homework. The boys came today with a "can do" attitude and showed how important possession and pressure is in a game of rugby league. We worked hard to complete most of our sets in the first half, which in turn generated fatigue in Magdalene. As their fatigue set in, our energy lifted which saw Nathaniel Leal cause some chaos through the middle. Zeph and Moni led the pack in attack and defense, with Billy showing great footwork and enthusiasm in his carries. Skipper (Josh Booth) held firm in defense, working well with his inside and outside men. We had players playing multiple positions and did not look out of place. As we hit the second half, we had a few errors which led to some points for Magdalene. However, the boys' attitude of showing up for one another did not pass, and as a result we came out as premiers of the 2024 MISA competition. It goes to show how far this group has come since our first training session together where the fundamentals were learnt, to students playing anywhere and anywhere in the team. Congratulations to all of the students for their efforts this term. |

Diocesan and Pathways update
As we head towards the end of Term 3 we are drawing a close on the majority of our pathway programs for 2024. The NSWCCC Athletics carnival is the final major pathway competition for the year, in which we saw a number of our JTCC students do really well. We have our final Diocese competitions in Week 1 & 2 of Term 4, Boys cricket, junior boys and girls AFL and Basketball. Our final major challenge is our Intermediate Boys Basketball team heading to the NSWCCC Tournament in October, good luck to them.
NSWCCC Athletics
Monday 16th of September saw 10 of JTCC top athletics competing in the NSWCCC Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park as part of the Wollongong Diocese Team. The athletes had a fantastic campaign, with some excellent results all round at a highly competitive carnival. Brooklyn Osborne unfortunately suffered a major injury in the high jump event, breaking his arm after a huge jump of 1.75m. We wish Brooklyn a smooth recovery.

NSW State Cup Volleyball Championships
Congratulations to the boys in the Senior Volleyball team who were successful in winning the NSW All Schools State Cup competition. Rarefied air for the College. We have only entered this competition once before. This is the premier schools tournament in the State and, although not involving many schools, the standard of play is at the highest level. We played five games against very strong volleyball teams, winning all of them to progress to the final. In most matches, we were behind at some stage, but managed to find a way to achieve when it really mattered.

In the final we were matched against Tempe High School. A narrow loss in the first set (25 -27) had us on tenterhooks. With a time limit and time running out, the completion of the second set became a priority. Tensions were relieved by a 25 - 18 win in this set and victory on a count back of total points won.

The team is to be congratulated for their precise execution of skill and ability, their camaraderie and teamwork and their humility and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
For the first time the opportunity to compete at the 2024 Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in the Honours Division, on the Gold Coast is open to us. An International event that attracts close to 500 teams. A wonderful opportunity to promote the school to the wider community and further extend the experience of our students.
Picton Soccer Gala Day - Volunteer Referees
Wollongong Diocese hosted a Primary Soccer Gala Day on Thursday 29th August at Picton Sportsground. The Wollongong Diocese relies on Secondary students to volunteer and referee these gala days, and John Therry and St. Benedicts were allocated to this day. The secondary student referee support of the students is invaluable and we appreciate the students who go and support and represent JTCC. Thank you to the following students who were in attendance. Netball - Georgia Bastock and Annelise Hall
JTCC had two students in the Opens Girls Wollongong team who took part in the NSWCCC Selections last Tuesday 27 August in Penrith.Annelise (back row - second from the left) and Georgia (back row - second from the right). Both did really well in a strong team and an extremely competitive selection process. Annelise progressed to the final game of possibles and probables but unfortunately missed out on selection.
Well done to both our girls.
Staff vs. Year 12 Championship
Our first round of staff vs. students activities puts Staff one up over the 2024 Year 12 cohort. The staff team ‘Big Brains’ of Mr. Winter, Mr. Hatton, Mr Holt, Mr. Macdonald, Mr Barton, Mr Tran and Mr. Albury reigned overall champions, with a late surge in the final bonus questions against a bright student team. The ‘BBs’ team of Jayden Wolczak, Liam Wicks, Darcy Wilson, Clayton Baguley, Charlie Zammit had an awesome round 4, claiming 11 points to bring them to equal points with the staff. The final bonus questions between the final two standing teams had the students unstuck, with a question on a famous chess play and kitchen appliances stumping the students to allow staff to claim victory.
The final question from trivia, which Mr Hatton answered in a split second to claim victory was:
What is the portmanteau for a popular kitchen-related product, that’s chemically called polytetrafluoroethylene?

Monday - Netball & Basketball
With two games running at the same time on Monday, there were some very tight games played. Netball saw our staff experience and strategy outplay the students, with a narrow victory of 10-9. Unfortunately in basketball the staff struggled against the attack from Garang and Adrian, despite a time penalty for the lack of commitment to their volleyball representative duties. The staff clocked their first loss, but remained confident heading to soccer and ultimate frisbee.

Wednesday - Soccer
The intensity of the soccer match was peaking right before kickoff. Students by the hundreds surrounded the fields to catch a glimpse of the action. The student team promoted skill, athleticism, talent and speed.While the staff team has none of those traits, at least not in this decade.
The students dominated possession and field position but failed to register a goal, despite having numerous shots on target. I do not recall the staff team registering a single shot on target. Even though we did not lose the game, the staff secretly counted the result as a win, and were very lucky the game did not continue into extra time. No first aid or oxygen was required, so count that as a positive result.

This is the main school sporting pathway that is offered to students at John Therry Catholic College. Some John Therry CC Diocesan teams are determined through trials, or a carnival hosted at a college level (Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming), however some teams are determined by individual trials that students must nominate and register for online. NSWCCC Sporting Opportunities
NSWCCC is another school sporting pathway that is offered to students at John Therry Catholic College. Some CCC teams are determined through qualifying at a carnival hosted at a Diocesan level (Athletics, Cross Country, Football, Rugby League, Swimming, Basketball, Touch Football), however some teams are determined by individual trials that students must nominate and register for online.
