JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 2 Week 4
Term 2 MISA competitions have gotten off to a slow start with more washout rounds over the past two weeks. All indoor sports and netball were fortunate to complete their games which allowed John Therry to secure some much needed points in the 2024 MiSA Championships.
JTCC Athletics Carnival
The JTCC Athletics Carnival is being held on FRIDAY 7th June (Week 6). We are asking all interested students who would like to compete in any of the following events to fill out the google form. Students must nominate here by Friday 31st May. No additions will be made on the day of the carnival.
- 200M
- 400M
- 800M
- Triple Jump
- Javelin
- 1500m * This is provisional, and may only be run based on interest and time on the day of the carnival.
200M + 800M events will be run on as the first event of the carnival - If you select 200m/800m events, you must ensure you are at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium by 8:15am for a 8:30am start. Students are to ensure they have arranged private transport for these events.
Triple Jump + 400M event will be held during the staff and student lunch break. You must be available at approximately 1pm for these events.
Javelin events will be held at school at a later date.
A reminder that all students and their parents have given consent and agreed to students behaviour and uniform expectations via the General Sports Permission note - Unacceptable behaviour and or uniform standards may result in withdrawal from Tuesday Sports programs or pathway opportunities.

Our first game was a tough one playing a student who just made the state team, none the less the boys played with tremendous heart and energy. We had a rough start and struggled on offence as we found ourselves down 10 at the half. We ramped up our defence and threw multiple defenders at their best player but he had some very tough shots. We managed to get the game even but we missed some tough shots in the final minute and went down by 3. For our first game we played pretty well and look forward to seeing the improvement each week. |

A tough start to the season for the JTCC Girls Basketball team. Inexperience may largely be the reason for the result, however, this was a great opportunity for the girls to learn more about the game and their roles on the team. A fantastic scoring game for Sophie Regan, who scored 30 of the 33 total points for JTCC. Also, an honourable mention to Raquel Bayon for a fantastic display of defence that most definitely stopped the opposing lead from getting larger. |

Our JT girls took on MacArthur Anglican in their first game of the new season. It was a tough game, which resulted in a devastating loss. Despite the loss, our girls played with great spirit and showed great sportsmanship and encouragement of each other. This was especially pleasing to see as we had 6 girls fill in for absent players at late notice. |

John Therry played outstanding against a strong OPAC team. Josh Pike gave the boys a blazing start by scoring four goals in the third, sixth, eighth, and twelfth minutes. The gents did a great job of distributing the ball among themselves, and Blake contributed two goals from outside the semi-circle—one through a leg and the other off the legs of the opponent. Also with two assists was Blake. Newly found keeper Kade “Goldberg” Nightingale provided with Amazing saves to keep It scoreless for the other team. The result was 4-0 and a good game of clean hockey. Next week we work on teamwork and this results sets up a fantastic start to the year. |

A dominant victory for JT in our first match of the season. After two weeks of trials, we were determined to start the season off with a bang. Our intensity and skills were excellent from the start of the match with JT scoring 2 quick touchdowns from Alice and Ava. Despite wasting a few scoring chances, we were in control of the match and went into halftime with an 11-1 lead. We continued our dominance and had the opportunity to trial players in new positions in the second half. We ended up winning 23-1 with some really good signs for the season ahead. |

Great game by the boys today and it was great to have a big student audience that got the team pumped with great energy on defence. The defence was on full display today keeping MCCC to 5 points in the first half. The outdoor game had some challenges but it was a great environment and the boys played great as a team. We will continue to work on our offence and get some more ball movement. |

Tough game this week against MCCC. The girls continue to learn through experience and are hoping to get the hang of the rules and work together as a team. With a full team this week our girls headed into the match with some confidence, despite 5 of them playing their first game of the season. Bowling first, we started quite well with Bridget and Maddi both taking wickets, but we were unable to capitalise on a couple of runout opportunities and difficult catches. Our first half effort was dismantled quickly with the bat as we lost consecutive wickets and ten overall. In saying this, there were plenty of positives to take out of the match and we look forward to an improved performance next week. |

John Therry had a great game with a win of 3-0. The teamwork exhibited against Macarthur Anglican School was phenomenal. All boys contributed to the game with determination and spirit. There was great encouragement and support between the boys and it was a pleasure to watch a great game of hockey. Two goals from Travis and one goal from Josh. Excellent teamwork all around. |

With a bus breakdown the game was shortened to one 10 minute half. The boys flew out of the gate with some great defence and quick layups to see us go up 10 early. We were able to keep up the pressure and run away with a good win. With the bye next week we will turn our attention to working on some defence in preparation for our semi-final. |

A very scrappy start to the season with errors from both teams dictating a defensive game. It took us 12 minutes to find our kick which was our only completed set for the game. This meant we were defending our line for most of the game with limited attacking opportunities. We were lucky that our defence held strong to hold them to nil. |

Overall the girls played a great game even with all of the distractions, by mid second half we are leading 4-3. and with 5 minutes remaining it’s 5-5. The senior soccer girls put on a fantastic display for their first round today against St Pats. We saw Ayen, Atong, Tanisha, Grace E and Courtney D make an impressive debut under the guidance of veterans Isabella, Lillian, Darcie, Jorja, Ariana, Indy, Breanna and Kyra. Special thanks to both Georgia D and Laura A for filling in. Our MVP this week goes to Siana Ible who came out of retirement to help out our backline. It was an unfortunate loss but the girls are showing great potential and I’m looking forward to watching their growth. |

With Mr Albery away today, the 7-9 boys hockey team put on a dominant display of hockey that would make their SuperCoach proud. JT lead from start to finish to come away with a resounding 6-0 victory against William Carey. Joshua Pike put in a true captains knock and scored 3 goals and was instrumental in our victory today. Special mentions to Travis and Caleb who also scored goals in a comprehensive team victory. |

First game for a very inexperienced but hugely enthusiastic team. Some very unlucky bounces lead to a few ground fielding errors and ultimately scoring for the opposition. We can only get better and now the boys know how. MVP to Ashton Bruce for some great pitching and an awesome reflex catch. This sure is a great way to have fun. |

CCC Sports selections, combined with pre existing injuries presented us with the challenge of only a few original players. We had some quality fill in players join us for our game today, but still played down one player. The first half was close, but fatigue set it and OPAC took out a convincing win. Diocesan and Pathways update
Term 2 kicks off with a flurry of Diocesan carnivals across multiple sports, and lots of wet weather causing some havoc for our Diocesan Football and Cross Country events. The Diocesan Cross Country has been postponed, whilst the Secondary Boys and Girls 13's & 7-9 & 7-10 Diocesan Football has been cancelled. This event cancellation means that this event will not be run in 2024. These decisions are never easy and we appreciate the disappointment of students and staff alike when so much effort goes into the preparation of teams for these championships.
As the Boys 7-10 division and the Girls 7-9 Division are a pathway event, DoW Sport will look at a restructure to provide the opportunity for our top 4 team to progress to our regional knockout event scheduled for Wednesday 19 June for teams that meet criteria. A reminder that junior students have an opportunity to play in the MISA Football competition in Term 3.
We’ve had a number of students who are out on representative duties at various NSWCCC events, and we are so pleased to hear of their great success. Please see below some of our students who have had outstanding results in our pathway programs.
Diocesan Open Boys Football Trials
On Friday 17 May, the Open Boys Football Selection Trial were run at Ian McLennan Park, Kembla Grange. This stand alone trial was due to the wash out of the Open Boys Football Championships this year. After a registration process, with nominations then scruntineered by selectors, approx. 40 students trialed for this team. JTCC had three students attend, Cohen Timmer (year 11), Darcy Wilson and Diego Martin from Year 12. The feedback from the convenors was that the trial was of a top level and all students represented their schools extremely well and made it a tough day for the selectors.
Congratulations to Diego and Darcy who were successfully selected into the team, with Cohen being in very close contention. This team will represent Wollongong diocese next week at the NSWCCC Football Championships to be held at Glenwood (Valentine Park) on Tuesday 28 May and Wednesday 29 May.
NSWCCC Girls Rugby League Trials
Three JTCC students headed up the coast for the NSWCCC Trials on Tuesday 21 & 22 May as part of the 18 years Southern Country Rugby League team. With a strong team again this year, they were looking forward to them defending the Southern Country undefeated status since the introduction of Girls NSWCCC pathway. Bridget Shearer (year 12), Navara Mataipule (year 11) and Annelise Hall (year 11) represented JTCC and the team extremely well, with Annelise successful in selection into the NSWCCC team.
Diocesan Open Girls Football
On the 2nd of May, 2024 our John Therry Open Girls Team attended the Diocesan Football Championships down at Ocean Park Woonona. Despite facing defeat in each of their five pool games, the JT open girls Diocesan team displayed unwavering perseverance and remarkable spirit throughout the carnival. Although victory eluded them, their sportsmanship and commitment to the game was a true testament to their JT pride. The results were as follows:

- Magdalene 3-0
- Holy Spirit 7-0
- St Benedicts 6-0
Special mention to all the players including Lillian, Isabella, and Laura who demonstrated unwavering determination in our defensive line. Meanwhile Grace, Veronika, Ava, and Kyra orchestrated our attack for the majority of the carnival. In the heart of the action, Ariana, Amelia, Zoe and Maddison controlled the midfield while Jorja and Indy exhibited versatility, contributing to wherever was needed. Last but not least, a pivotal role was held by Darcie, our formidable goalkeeper from year 10, who faced relentless pressure but kept her composure and made some remarkable saves throughout the day. NSWCCC Basketball
JTCC had 3 students attend the NSWCCC Basketball trials on Tuesday 14th May. Georgina Akol (year 10) was trialing for the 16’s Girls side, whilst Adrian Narvais (year 12) and Garang Bol (year 12) were trialing for the Open Boys team. Congratulations to the two boys, Adrian and Garang who were successfully in selection into the NSWCCC team. They will attend the 18s and Under NSW All Schools Selections on the 4th September in Castle Hill.
NSWCCC 15s AFL
Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th saw Wagga Wagga host the U15 AFL Boys and Girls NSWCCC Selection Trials. It was beautiful weather with the sun out and clear skies both days, a great escape from the rain. Mrs. Roberts was a team official for the carnival, with Sullivan O’Dwyer being our sole JTCC athlete representative in the Boys Southern NSW side. Sullivan showed his talent from game one, showing great composure, athleticism and defensive work in the backline. His quick thinking, skill work and game sense saw him as the only representative from the Wollongong Diocese to be selected in the team of 22 to compete at the NSW All Schools Championships in Albury the 3-4th June. Congratulations Sully!
NSWCCC Volleyball
Friday 3rd of May saw four JTCC athletes head out to Sydney Olympic Park to attend the NSWCCC Open Boys Volleyball Trials. Students had to initially be approved to register for this event, which saw Cody Meisenhofen, William Chanhdara, Lachlan Phiousodarith and Jericho Titie Anetelea invited to attend. The boys had a highly successful campaign, with William, Lachlan and Cody selected in the NSWCCC team to attend the NSW All Schools Tri-Series Tournament held in Alexandria on Friday 21st June. Congratulations to the boys on their selection,and congratulations to all on their efforts. Good luck to the boys at NSW All Schools and we look forward to seeing Jericho going back next year to trial again as he is currently only in year 10, so has two more years to gain selection.
Southern Country Rugby League Trials
JTCC had seven athletes travel to Wagga to attend the Southern Country U15 & U18 Boys Rugby League trials, alongside Mr Tran & Mr McGrath as Diocesan Officials. The boys played extremely well and were excellent representatives for the school. The games against Western Region were tough and the selectors had their work cut out for them. Congratulations to Zephaniah McLean Lemalu (year 9) and Kieren Mostyn (Year 8) who were selected in the U15 Southern Country Team, and Riley Oitmann (Year 12) who was selected in the U18 Southern Country Team. Zac Dittavong was also nominated for the CCC President’s Team, which will be confirmed shortly. All students will attend the NSWCCC Championships on 24th & 25th May 2024 at St Mary's Stadium (St Mary's). Congratulations boys!
Bill Turner Cup - U15 Boys Knock Out Competition
Our second match of the 2024 campaign was a wet and soggy affair with the JT team facing up against arch-rivals St Gregory’s College. The history between the two schools goes back to 2019 when John Therry defeated St Greg’s on penalties. Since then, St Greg’s has had the wood of the JT teams. There was a little animosity between the teams with St Greg’s coming out quite physical in the early contests. To be honest, the game was evenly matched with both teams having their fair share of ball in the attacking third with numerous shots on goal.
The JT midfield let slip a defensive assignment and an ex JT player was able to snap a shot at the goal, it was a pearler, and St Greg’s were on the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Jt again had several good attacking runs with multiple balls delivered to key areas, but we struggled to get on to the receiving end and execute.
We regathered during the halftime break, with most of the players looking like drowned rats. But they persevered through the poor weather conditions and battled on. Again, another fairly evenly matched half with both teams having multiple shots on goal to no avail. The scores remained the same and just like that, the our 2024 campaign came to an end.
Some great defensive efforts from Lucas Alvarado, Lucas Failla, Alex Sanchez and Floilan Magalona kept us in the game throughout the match. Great leadership and midfield play by Jaidon, Bryson and Davonne and some great attacking play between Ben and the two Coopers. Our future looks promising with Levi, Cooper F, Ben, Davoone, Floilan, Billy, Lucas, Noah, Charbel and Dom all being of age for next year's competition.

External Pathways Success
Dominic Baker (Year 10) competed in the Australian Athletics Championships in Adelaide over the school holidays. He had a very successful campaign in the U17 Para Ambulant division, finishing fourth in the 1500m and finishing 6th in the Javelin. He is also a social media star, with footage of his 1500m finish shared on the Athletics Australia social media sites with over 500,000 views!

Cody Meisenhofen (Year 12) is not only having success in the school pathway Volleyball program, but has also recently been scouted to trial for the U18 Australian Volleyball squad, which took place at the AIS facilities in Canberra in April. Among roughly 50 other athletes, Cody was fortunate enough to secure a spot on the team. He will be traveling to Bahrain in July/August to participate in this year’s Asian Volleyball U18 Championships. If successful and the team manages to place in the top 3 in this tournament, they will qualify for the U18 World Championships. We will keep an eye out for Cody and wish him and the Australian squad all the best.
Coby Hilton (Year 12) is part of the GWS Giants Academy and is having an excellent start to the 2024 season. He has been selected in the Giants squad for a number of games in the Coates Talent League, which is Australia’s premier underage football pathway competition for boys and girls in the eastern states with teams composed mostly of under 18 players. Coby has been selected most weeks, only missing one game due to the thumb injury. In between completing year 12 he has been doing a fair amount of travel playing the against Gold Coast Suns in Brisbane beginning of April, as well as Tasmania last week and Sandringham Dragons in Melbourne. He has been recognised as a “raw talent…with plenty of flair” in the scout notes on Rookie Central. Keep an eye out for Coby in the future AFL lineup!

Diocesan Sporting Opportunities
This is the main school sporting pathway that is offered to students at John Therry Catholic College. Some John Therry CC Diocesan teams are determined through trials, or a carnival hosted at a college level (Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming), however some teams are determined by individual trials that students must nominate and register for online. NSWCCC Sporting Opportunities
NSWCCC is another school sporting pathway that is offered to students at John Therry Catholic College. Some CCC teams are determined through qualifying at a carnival hosted at a Diocesan level (Athletics, Cross Country, Football, Rugby League, Swimming, Basketball, Touch Football), however some teams are determined by individual trials that students must nominate and register for online. Students must be currently competing at a representative level in their chosen sport to be considered for CCC team trials.The sports that require online nomination and registration include:
