MISA UPDATE:
John Therry teams continue to score some impressive wins in Open Boys Basketball and Oz Tag teams and the Junior Boys Volleyball team. Some close affairs in the Boys Softball has earnt some valuable MISA points for Jt in the Term 1 competition. Well done to all JT students who turn up and compete week in and week out.

Against the second best team in the comp the boys were able to dominate early with great defence and some tough shots by Kruze to put it out to double digits. Garang and Jude had some timely baskets but we managed to bury them in the second half to win by a considerable margin. We are still working on putting 40 quality minutes together. |

Mt. Carmel provided a tough and experienced opposition. The score did not reflect the effort and teamwork the girls produced during the game. Standouts were Georgina Akol, scoring 12 points and Annelise Hall grabbing rebounds on both ends of the court. Congratulations to Maddie Albrow for scoring her first points this MISA season. |

A wholesome performance from the team with all players pulling their weight in the heat of Minto. We gained a solid lead which allowed us to trial some risky plays. Unfortunately not all of them were able to be pulled off successfully. A great performance and work rate from Cory in the middle and Miguel out wide which helped us secure a comfortable victory |

Today’s game against St Pats was a very difficult game in the heat. St Pats were a very skilled team, but our girls were valiant in defeat. Akiira really stood out today, having a few good runs, and nice tags. |

7-9 Girls Indoor Cricket |

Our girls took on MacArthur Anglican in our second match of indoor cricket. We batted first, with Raquel and Zoe, followed by Alice and Ebony scoring 19 and 22 from their respective partnerships. It was then our turn to bowl, and while MAS were still able to compile a good total it was a much improved bowling effort from our round one effort. |

JT played in a closely fought contest against MacArthur Anglican. We started steady in the first innings getting three runs but poor fielding led to a one run deficit. This sloppy and inconsistent fielding continued into the second innings, however, some good batting kept us in the game. Going into the last innings MAS needed three runs to win. As a team the boys really lifted their fielding under pressure and managed to secure an 11 all tie. Overall, we didn’t play near our best, but we fought all the way until the end. |

Very one-sided game this week with JT showing far superior skills and teamwork. Our best performance from the six players present, with few mistakes and generally very strong serving. Looking forward to round 2 games with anticipation of further success. |

Today we were down three players so the six girls had very little rest in the heat. Some great rallies were had with the St.Pats girls however they were far more consistent in their shots than the JT team. With more net work and serving practice over the next few weeks hopefully we will come away with a win when we play them again in Week 9 |

An outnumbered JTCC team were up against Oran Park Anglican College this week. However, the boys came away with a close win, regardless of lacking in bench players. Offence today was led by Garang, showing us a couple of confident dunks, and Austin from behind the 3. Defence was in fine form from Moni on the rebound and Levi with grabbing steals. Cooper had his hand in both offence and defence, having presence all over the court. |

A disappointing result and performance from the boys in what was extremely hot conditions. After a slow start the boys found themselves behind and were making some uncharacteristic mistakes. The boys lifted the intensity in the second half and looked the better side but were unable to chase down Mt Carmel. If the boys can focus and fix a few things in their game then I’m sure they’ll be the team to beat moving forward. |

A good win but a potentially costly loss in the third set. Effect of the heat and already having the match won, led to lapse in concentration and movement. Will need further results to go our way in order to make the Final. Steady improvement has led to us being much stronger. Important game next week against the front runners. |

A disappointing and somewhat controversial loss for the girls today. The team was slow to start the first set and never had the time to recover which in turn cost them dearly. In the second, a few bad calls led to a 25-23 defeat. The third set was an easy win with the girls finding their form and settling into a rhythm. Terrific serving as always by Emerson Hickey and improved net work from Grace Akol. |

Our girls were very excited to get their first win of the season in what was a much improved performance on previous weeks. Some significantly more accurate bowling put pressure on the Wollondilly batters, which led to wickets from Raquel (2), Elissa and Alice. Our batting partnerships are growing in confidence as they look to exploit some rules and improve their skills. Bring on next week! |

DIOCESAN AND PATHWAYS UPDATE
We have an extremely busy few weeks with pathway sports, with JTCC demonstrating great pride and spirit across multiple carnivals. We have had great success and a number of our students have been selected into Wollongong Diocesan teams. Well done to everyone who has represented JTCC as well as our coaches/managers who are integral to ensuring the smooth running of the day.
Diocese Swimming Carnival
On the 6th March, 2024 our small but mighty John Therry swim Team attended the Diocesan Swimming Carnival at Corrimal Pool. It was fantastic weather and the whole team worked well together to get the best possible result for the College. Congratulations to Isabella Wragg-Leighton for winning Age Champion in the 14 girls, Caitlyn Single who came second overall in the 16 girls and Presley Hovanyecz for third overall in the 14 boys. Isabella also progressed to the Diocesan team to compete at the NSWCCC Swimming Championships in April. Good luck to Isabella at the next level. Well done to all our swimmers for giving their best in tough competition.
Diocese Girls Touch Carnival
After a minor crisis with the bus in the morning, our girls eventually made it down to Dalton Park in Wollongong for the Diocese Touch Carnival. The U13 Girls team marked an exciting debut for many year 7 students in the sport of touch football. Despite being their first time playing the game competitively, the students showcased remarkable skill, teamwork, and determination, securing victory in two games and leaving the carnival with a positive spirit. Despite their status as newcomers to the sport, the students from John Therry displayed enthusiasm and sportsmanship, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
Unfortunately our 15’s had a tough day too, with more losses on the cards for the ladies but their energy remained high as they wanted to finish the carnival with a win. This opportunity came in the final game against St Benedicts. Led by Keira Thompson-Elliot and Jorja Smith, the ladies were able to score 2 tries while ensuring that St Benedicts attack was stifled on the other end of the field and kept to 0. Overall it was a great day for the girls who kept their energy and spirits high throughout the day. Olivia North was incredible each game, showing off her exceptional footwork to score multiple runaway tries, as well as completing chase down defensive efforts to stop tries. MVP: Keira Thompson-Elliot showed great leadership each game leading the team down the field with her tough runs in the middle, as well as strong defensive efforts during each game. Congratulations to all of the team members, as the girls showed great sportsmanship each game and held their head high even after some tough games.
Our Opens first game was always going to be a tough one against Holy Spirit and today was no exception. We lost our first game but demonstrated resilience and a never give up attitude and were unlucky to have a couple of tries disallowed. We went on to win our next four games against St Johns, Corpus Christi, Mt Carmel and St Josephs showing excellent teamwork and sticking to a basic game plan that saw us controlling the ball and holding possession. At the end of the day the girls finished up 3rd overall out of 10 teams, a commendable effort. This year all of the girls could have been awarded MVP for many different reasons but some key players included Bridget Shearer, who was selected in the Wollongong Open Diocese team, and showed lightning speed and a great read on the game. Another was Grace O’Reilly, who was selected as a shadow player for the Dio team, and improved out of sight over the last year and up and coming talent Ava Hilton who had a few opportunities to show her speed on the field as well. Congratulations to all the girls, they should be very proud of the role they played in the team and the way they conducted themselves with the utmost sportsmanship throughout the day.
Diocese Boys Touch Carnival
Our three boys teams had a great day down at Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow for the Diocesan Boys Touch Carnival in some hot and humid conditions. Our junior team showed great enthusiasm and started off the day with some solid results, including a close game against the eventual overall winners MCCC. Despite this, the boys represented the College with PRIDE and demonstrated their willingness to learn and grow. The U15’s team was team was made up of mostly league, oztag and AFL players who were keen to learn the game of touch more and more as the day went on. The team gelled and clocked up a number of wins across the day and finished in 2nd place overall. Much of this success was due to teamwork shown by all the boys, with everyone playing their role, and the lightning and fancy footwork of Nathaniel Leal. Our opens team went into the day with confidence after a 3rd place finish in 2023, but unfortunately slipped and finished in 6th overall. Despite the result, the team were fantastic and were hungry to improve each game, incorporating new touch strategy and tactics. A special mention to William Shearer (Year 9) who stepped up into the Opens team and was the youngest (and smallest) player and was the team’s leading try scorer.
A big congratulations to Riley Oitmann who was selected into the Open Diocesan team, and Nathaniel Leal, Sully O’Dwyer and Josh Booth who were all selected in the 15’s Diocesan team to compete at in the NSWCCC Championships in the Central Coast in April.
JOHN THERRY SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The 44th Annual Swimming Carnival was reverted to a Competitors Only and Year 12 event due to the extreme heat conditions.
Our competitors got straight into the action with the 200 IM and our winners did not disappoint with some seriously good times.
Congratulations to the following students for winning the below events. With the switch to competitors only event, it meant we were able to swim all 100m events for all strokes, resulting in a number of students earning an ‘establishment’ record.

To add some House competition to the day's events, we introduced a Year 12 and a Year 7-11 Survivor Challenge, where the students had to pass a 5kg water weight the length of the pool and back again.
Murray took out the Year 12 race while Conolly took out the 7-11 race.

Pathway Sporting Achievements:
Sullivan O’Dwyer (Year 9) along with William Gillette and Torin Marlow attended the Southern NSW AFL U15’s trial at Hannaford Oval, Wilton (Home of the Wollondilly Knights). The trials went well and it was a successful day for all involved. Despite predicted high temperatures , the convenors managed to avoid the heat of the day and were able to run a quality trial with all students able to showcase their talents without being impacted too much by the heat. Numbers were up for this trial and a strong level of skill and ability was on show, making it a tough day in the office for selectors. Sullivan was successful in selection, he will now attend the NSWCCC trials held in Wagga Wagga on the 6-7th May.
On Tuesday four of our fierce females traveled to Canberra to attend the Southern Country 18’s Rugby League girls trials. The girls represented JTCC with pride amongst a strong contingent of athletes, all vying for a position in the team to progress to the NSWCCC Rugby League trials to be held in St. Mary’s in May. Congratulations to Navara, Bridget and Annelise who were successfully selected in the team. We look forward to seeing your performance in May.
External Sporting Achievements:
Dominic Baker (year 10) competed at the New South Wales Junior Athletic Championships over the weekend and had a very good campaign. He finished with the silver medal in the 1500 metres, a silver medal in the javelin and a bronze in the 800 metres. Dom’s biggest achievement was breaking the Australian record for his multi-class category U17 F37 for javelin. He now holds the Australian U15 record and also the U17 record.Dominic has now qualified for the Australian Athletic Championships in Adelaide in the April school holidays. Good luck Dom!

DIOCESAN SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
This is the main school sporting pathway that is offered to students at John Therry Catholic College. Some John Therry CC Diocesan teams are determined through trials, or a carnival hosted at a college level (Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming), however some teams are determined by individual trials that students must nominate and register for online. NSWCCC SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES
NSWCCC is another school sporting pathway that is offered to students at John Therry Catholic College. Some CCC teams are determined through qualifying at a carnival hosted at a Diocesan level (Athletics, Cross Country, Football, Rugby League, Swimming, Basketball, Touch Football), however some teams are determined by individual trials that students must nominate and register for online. Students must be currently competing at a representative level in their chosen sport to be considered for CCC team trials.The sports that require online nomination and registration include:
