JTCC SPORT UPDATE - Term 2 Week 9

Our MISA Competition has come to an end for another term. This term John Therry performed extremely well and we were able to take home FOUR premierships. This is a fantastic effort and our students should be proud of their efforts shown throughout the term. Congratulations to the following teams who have won a Term 2 Premiership

Our attention will NOW shift towards our Term 3 MISA Competition. Trials will happen during Term 2, Week 10 and Term 3, Week 1. Students have been given a Google Form to complete which will assist coaches in selecting their teams. Students are reminded to bring appropriate equipment for their trials next week.

The Term 3 MISA SPORTS are as follows;

Students have been enjoying their 7-10 Rec Sport Options and staff have complimented students on their positive attitude and effort during sport time.

Another reminder of the expectations during sport;

Students are expected to behave appropriately and show respect to their classmates and teachers during sport.
Students are expected to participate in sporting activities unless they have a note from a parent/guardians stating others.
Students who are injured and have a note from a parent/guardian are able to complete homework/assessments during Sport time (Sports Detention/Injury)
Students ARE NOT permitted to have food or drinks on our sport buses. We have had too many students leaving rubbish on the buses.

MISA- Term Two Finals

Softball 10-12 Boys Mr A. Chapman	Won 8-5 vs MAS	Mason McPhee	A fantastic win by the JT boys against MAS. MAS started strong and got their first five batters home, but JT rallied to a competitive 5-4 deficit after the first innings. Masons pitching went to the next level in the second innings and combined with excellent fielding, MAS were prevented from scoring at all. JT then cruised home to a 8-5 win.
Basketball 7-9 Boys Mr Cook	Won 42 - 38 Vs THAC	Rewa Takiari	In a much anticipated rematch between the two standout schools, JTCC entered the final a little light on numbers. Some weekend games had seen some players pull up sore and unavailable for the match. Regardless of the obstacles the JTCC boys completed their warmup and received their instructions. Turnovers have always been our biggest hindrance and today would be no different. 15 turnovers at times throughout the game would keep our opposition in the game as we struggled to move the ball on offence. Our big men were dominant when they got the ball and we were lucky enough our perimeter shooting kept us in the match in the first half. We went into the break at 19 points a piece with Rewa, Cooper and Deng leading the way. The second half started poorly with Deng picking up 2 quick fouls and Thomas Hassall going on a small run getting out to a 6 point lead. We slowly clawed back through tough opposition as Cooper and Rewa were manhandled in the post without a whistle to support. The boys battled on and soon and enough on the back of key baskets by Rewa, Deng, Cooper and a free throw by Will, we had a small lead which we were reluctantly able to hold on and secure till time expired. Basketball 7-9 Girls Mr Jefferys	lost 44-17 Vs St pats	Elyse Stonebridge Emerson Hickey	The girls were fighting up hill to start the game with only 6 players available due to injury and a number of girls with other minor injuries. We started off well but as the game went on we just ran out of legs losing a very hard fought game. Huge thank you to the effort of the girls for the whole season and especially today. Emerson and Elyse were huge today with non stop effort on both ends of the floor, it was too hard to not select both for MVP this week after two very valiant efforts.
Indoor Cricket 10-12 Girls Mr Geribo	Won 100-75 vs MAS
Netball 11-12 Girls Miss Pedder	Lost 27-17 vs Magdalene	Ayla Cook	JT took on Magdalene for their final game of the Term. The girls played fiercely and held an equal score up until half time, this was due to their clear communication as a team and strong passing. Unfortunately the second half saw Magdalene take the lead, resulting in a 27-17 loss. The girls gave their absolute all, and played a strong final game, finishing 4th overall.
Hockey 7-9 Boys Mr Albery	Loss 2-0- OPAC	Travis Campbell	In a disappointing turn of events, the John Therry boys hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat in the highly anticipated Grand Final. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to find their stride and fell short against their rivals. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the team and their fans, as they reflect on the missed opportunity. MVP - Travis Campbell
Rugby League 10-12 Boys Mr McGrath + Mr Fifita	16-14 win	Riley Oitmann & Ben Mostyn	An absolute thriller in the Senior Boys Rugby League grand final matchup against Mount Carmel saw the JT boys prevail yet again. A gritty game through the middle saw Benny burst through and find Riley for a classic support play which led to a try. Through our own mistakes and poor discipline, MC rolled up the field to score a soft try in the corner. A penalty goal on the halftime siren saw JT lead 8-4. Second half started with Riley bursting through a lazy middle and scored next to the posts. A fired up MC side bounced back, scoring two unanswered tries and levelling the score 14 all. Some poor discipline from MC marched us up the field, eventually giving us a perfect opportunity to slot a penalty goal with 1 minute left. A devastated Mr Webb could only watch on as the JT boys pulled through. Special mention to Riley for scoring all 16 points, and sending off the year twelves with a win. Thanks to Luke, Roger, Kisione, Marley, Noah and Adam for the contribution you have given to the MISA competition over the years. All the best for your future in sport - you have all been a pleasure to work with.
Rugby League U16 Girls Mr Tran	WON 32-24 VS ST PATS	Mary-Agnes Fatialofa	Today the girls rugby league team played for the MISA premiership in the grand final against St Pats. The game was highly competitive and very close, making it a good challenge for both teams. All the girls played extremely well, supporting each other in both attack and defence, which allowed them to win the game 32-24. MVP today went to Mary, who carried several strong runs up the field and made many impactful tackles, unfortunately she went down with a leg injury but made a return to the field to finish off the game. Congratulations to the girls and Mr Tran on their MISA season win!
Rugby League U16 Girls Mr Strojny	Loss 16-12 vs St Pats	Isabella Stapelton	The girls' Under 15 Div 2 football team at John Therry Catholic College performed well during term 3, despite dealing with injuries. Overcoming injuries and still excelling showing resilience and determination by the team and came 4 overall. Their ability to perform well despite setbacks demonstrates the team's skill and commitment and was shown by playing with a person short and still losing by a point.
Frisbee 7-9 Mixed Miss Moon	Won 13-6 vs MAS	Alice Stephenson	Congratulations to John Therry on a 13-6 win. This came after a tough loss the week prior in the semi final playoff which didn’t stop John Therry from coming out and giving their all to earn a place on the podium. Shoutouts to Jazwyn and Nicholas who scored four goals between them and a huge congratulations to Alice Stephenson, our MVP who was pivotal in both defence and offence, scoring two goals herself. This was a good term of hard work and dedication, and myself and assistant coach Sam are very proud.
Soccer 11-12 Boys Mr Holmes	Lost 4-3 vs THAC	Diego Martin	A fantastic performance for the final game of the year for the bronze medal. Unfortunately we came up short with the final score ending 3-4. A great come back to level the score 3-3 however the fairy tale ended with the last kick of the game being scored by the opposition and the final whistle bellowing to conclude the exciting match. A full time goalkeeper would have surely provided a different outcome. Diego assisted one and a scored goal too. Liam wicks was dangerous as always scoring two with some great channel runs and some individual brilliance. Preston and Luke bossed the midfield and were almost on the score sheet too. Matty and Jake were far too quick out wide and Jake was unlucky not to score. Our rock solid back line of Jayden, Ryan, Angus, mitch and Isaac doing as much as possible to keep the score down. A big thank you to our two fill in goal keeper, Emiliano and Deken, who did their absolute best. The fight and determination shown was true JT spirit, a very proud effort today. Misa Dance

On the 20th of June John Therry MISA Dance Students represented our college at the MISA Dance showcase. What an amazing showcase it was, the day definitely highlighted the many talented and gifted students in Macarthur.

John Therry Catholic College proudly presented a dance compilation that showcased the many personalities, interests and talents of our students. Teamwork has been the theme of MISA dance at John Therry this year, with staff, students and family members all working collaboratively to showcase our love of dance. Our dance is a mix of contemporary, lyrical, jazz, cheer and hip hop choreographed by students and staff.

A special thank you to Miss Tori and Mrs Marie Wilson who coached the team in their introduction to Cheer this Term. The John Therry MISA Dance Team is also extremely grateful to Hayley D’Cuhna and James Crawford for their expertise and production of our music.

The John Therry students not only had fun and enjoyed their performance, but demonstrated sportsmanship in their encouragement and support of the other school performances. Well done JT!

It has been such a privilege working with such talented, enthusiastic and energetic young people. It has definitely been a memorable experience and I am looking forward to working with this team of superstars again in the near future.

JTCC Annual Athletics Carnival

The John Therry community participated in the College’s annual athletics carnival on Friday 9th June. To say it was fresh in the morning was an understatement, as the synthetic grass and the field were covered in frost.

Year 12 were keen to rip into their last carnival of their high school journey. Participation was high in some Year Groups, but some Year Groups will need to improve their attendance in 2024 events. Valuable points were earned which boosted House totals but the most influencing factor was that of attendance. Some Houses were strong in numbers and as such turned that into valuable participation points.

Well done to Ryan and Murray houses for their attendance and to all students that were in attendance, you are to be congratulated on their efforts throughout the day as well as their behaviour, with venue staff handing our compliments for student behaviour.

The day started off with the 200m/800m events for the serious competitors with Darcy Wilson breaking the first record of the day.

Students moved to their first rotations, we were to witness to more awesome displays of student athleticism as several more records were broken.

Congratulations to Murray House for winning the 2023 Athletics Championships and for also winning all four school carnivals for the calendar year. In my recollection, this feat has not been achieved in over 20 years.

Wollongong Diocesan Netball Championships

A very cold and early start to a great day at Berkeley Netball courts with the Senior Girls team. Our first game began at 8:30 against St Benedicts which saw the team slowly warm up and play to the best standard and take their first win of the day. The next two games saw JT go up against some tough Wollongong competition, unfortunately resulting in losses for both games, however the girls played their best. After multiple byes the girls then versed their fourth term St Pats, where they saw victory. The first half of the match had them down 10-5, however with a passionate half time talk the girls fired each other up to come back with a killer 17-12 win! The fifth game was close for the first half against St Josephs, however the long day caught up with the team leaving them short of a win. Lastly the girls took their final win of the day against Mt Carmel, they played a strong last game which saw them well ahead in both halves. It was an absolute pleasure taking this team to the Dio Carnival and seeing their skills and teamwork develop over the day.

Intermediate Boys Basketball

The Intermediate boys started their day off against St John's Nowra and took a little bit of time to gel and get familiar with the team dynamics. After some adjustments, we went into the break leading 33 - 24, with Levi Nia and Rewa Takiari leading our scorers.

We continued to fine tune at both ends of the court and were eventual winners 48 - 40.

Levi Nia - 15 points, 5/11 fg, 2 steals, 2 assists

Rewa Takiari - 10 points, 5/11 fg, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 assist

We played the final against a strong Corpus Christi team who defeated Edmund Rice by 4 points.

We adjusted our line up to push a tempo game and it paid off immediately with quick transition points and uncontested perimeter shots. Corpus remained in the game by a sole scorer hitting his outside shots and his penetrating drives. JT led at the break 31 - 24 with Marcus Feehan 10 points and Rewa Takiari 6 points.

We changed our defense to remove their key scorer from the game and the JT lead was extended to 20 points, leading 62 - 42 with 6 minutes remaining. All players were able to get on the scoresheet this game for a great team effort.

Marcus Feehan - 4/11 fg, 11 points, 2 steals, 3 assists, 2 rebounds

The Intermediate Boys now head to the NSWCCC Championships on 30/31 October in Term 4.

Junior Boys Basketball

This year saw us play a very good Edmond Rice team. We started the game well with Moni and Thomas making some great plays to give us an early lead. We missed some tough layups and struggled to find our man but still managed to hold onto a two point lead going into half time.

In the second half we started off strong and pushed out to a 6 point lead however we ran out of gas down the stretch and lost by 6 in the final minute.

The boys learnt a lot from the competition and look forward to it for next year.

Remember that there is a new way to nominate individual sports for NSWCCC. This portal is open now and all students wanting to trial for Southern Country and NSWCCC representative teams are to ensure they register by the appropriate CLOSING DATE.

Please note that some sports are selected by individual trials, and these can be held throughout NSW. Individual nominations require students to make their own way to and from selections.

Selection in the following sports: Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Touch Football, AFL (Boys) and Football are done through the Wollongong Diocese carnivals by way of representing John Therry at these respective carnivals.

Selection in the following sports: AFL (Girls), Baseball, Basketball, Cricket – Girls, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby, Softball, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball will need to be done via individual nomination and selections.
