JTCC SPORT UPDATE - TERM 2 WEEK 7
As our MISA Competition comes to a completion for another term, I am proud to announce that John Therry has qualified for FIVE Grand Finals. This is an outstanding achievement, highlighting our strong sporting culture here at JT. All MISA teams have represented JT with pride, maturity and respect. Our coaches have consistently complimented our MISA students for the way they have presented themselves so far this year.
We wish the following teams good luck in their Grand Finals this week and hope they can bring home some trophies.

With week 8 being our last week of MISA for term 2, our attention will shortly shift towards our Term 3 MISA Competition. More details and information regarding trials will be announced via Compass and the Newsletter in the coming weeks.
Our 7-10 Rec Sport rotation is in full swing and the general feedback from staff and students has been positive. To ensure this continues I have a few reminders for the John Therry community regarding expectations at sport.
- Students are expected to behave appropriately and show respect to their classmates and teachers during sport.
- Students are expected to participate in sporting activities unless they have a note from a parent/guardians stating others.
- Students who are injured and have a note from a parent/guardian are able to complete homework/assessments during Sport time (Sports Detention/Injury)
- Students ARE NOT permitted to have food or drinks on our sport buses. We have had too many students leaving rubbish on the buses.

Our opponents this week were a weakened Macarthur Anglican School who were down on numbers. All the boys received a fair share of game time to gain vital experience as we head towards the semi-finals. Our tempo was down a notch and we became sloppy with our possession and MAS were allowed uncontested long shots and easy rebounds, which they converted to uncontested points. Annoying but fixable. We went into the break up 30 - 27 and the boys were given their instructions to tighten up defense and make the little things count on offense. Plenty of shots were had by the boys and this week had several students step on the scoring stats. We eventually got home 49 - 37 winners but it was a far from convincing performance. In a hard-fought basketball match, the girls' team displayed remarkable determination and resilience despite ultimately falling short. The players showcased their skills and effort throughout the game, leaving everything on the court. They displayed solid teamwork, and demonstrated exceptional hustle on both ends of the floor. Despite their best efforts, the scoreline didn't reflect their tenacity and spirit. However, their relentless pursuit and unwavering effort serve as a testament to their character and dedication. The girls should be proud of their performance and sportsmanship on show today. |

The senior boys had a challenging game due to unforeseen injuries and players being unable to play. However, the boys went out there and played a good game - maintaining a strong offense and defense. Another strong performance by the U16 Girls Rugby League Team winning 44-24 in a physical exhibition of Rugby League. Strong hit ups by the forward pack led to Ruby Marks diving over for multiple tries, as well as try scoring machine Bridget Shearer who scored another 4. Gese Satuatasi was exceptional in attack and defense with multiple bone rattling tackles as well as damaging charges at the opposing MCC players. MVP: Gese Satuatasi |

This week JT went up against Magdalene, starting off strong in the first two quarters. The team improved on their communication which allowed them to more seamlessly feed the ball to the shooters to see some quality play in the goal circle. The girls went into the last round of the regular competition needing to beat MacArthur Anglican to claim first place. We started well, taking five wickets in the first 3 overs, including 3 runouts to Zarli, Afi and Grace Augustine. This was followed by a great over by Zarli, who took 3/-8, helping restrict MAS to a very obtainable total of 37. Unfortunately, our batting wasn't up to it's usual standard as we only managed 11 runs off our first 3 skins. Maddie and Zarli managed to compile 20 runs from their two overs but it wasn't enough to win the match. We look forward to playing in the semi final next week. MVP: Zarli Lakeman |

Outstanding performance from our John Therry Frisbee team today. We were determined to secure our first win for the season and our boys and girls didn’t disappoint, scoring a huge 16 points against Macarthur Anglican. Lots of players contributed to the score card today including Sienna (2), William (2), Ruby, Alice, Jazwyn, Maahir, Nicholas and Pratha. MVP was difficult to pick this week but well done to both Nicholas and William who were pivotal in offence and defence. Final score 16-8. |

We played against BAC and took advantage of the chances on offer to get to 3 runs. We then fielded really well and restricted the opposition to 3. In the final innings JT couldn’t manage to get across the line and BAC did enough to seal the game. |

A much anticipated rematch against Mt Carmel saw a tight contest between the two top teams of the competition. JT got off to a great start with tight defense keeping MTCC scoreless for the first 7 minutes. We raced out to a 14 point buffer and this allowed more game time for our bench. We went to the half with a slim 7 point lead after several turn overs and transition lay-ups to MTCC, The boys showed confidence in the offensive structures which has been a great improvement since we first started, but too many times we are opting up for an extra pass instead of making a shot in the paint. MTCC started the half with several long range shots and were soon in a competitive position and applied the pressure. Our turnovers crept back into our game and soon enough we held a slim lead with 2 minutes remaining. “Crazy” showed up from both teams, but JT prevailed after defending their lead and escaping with a 2 point win. Some much needed improvements from some players this week who were confident enough to take risks and make good decisions. This week we played Mt Carmel who beat us by 30 points the last time we played. The girls were determined to do better. We started off well making the first 6 points forcing Mt Carmel to make some changes. With some great defence we stayed within 8 points at the half. Some tough shots from Mt Carmel, gave them a double digit lead but some tough shots from Sophie, Elyse and Ava kept the game within reach however we ran out of steam in the end and lost 35-20. |

The girls' indoor cricket team displayed outstanding skill, securing a convincing 91-30 victory in their semi final against Mount Carmel. Batting first, Grace Tutunoa and Fanaafi Fauese set the tone for innings, compiling 30 runs from their 2 overs before solid batting from Laura and Moana (27), Zarli and Maddie (23) and Tara and Grace Augustine (11) lead us to a strong total of 91. In defence of the target, the girls' accurate bowling and quality fielding, including some sharp work behind the stumps by Afi, created immense pressure, with Mount Carmel struggling to score freely, managing only 30 runs. After a comprehensive win, we look forward to the Grand final next week. |

This week the team went up against Thomas Hassall for the Semi’s. The girls played a strong game, dominating the court in both halves. The mid court did a fantastic job of feeding the ball to our shooters today which saw Kaitlin, Liana and Samara score a solid 22 goals. JT won 22-4, which will see them play next week in the final. |

Semi finals against THAC led to another strong JT win despite a depleted side. With players out of position the lads started slow, giving up a soft try on the right edge. Many errors from both teams meant a low scoring first half, JT leading 18-4. A much improved but far from perfect second half allowed the boys to start rolling. Strong performances from Tonna, Finn and Roger led the way as the boys pulled through for a 38-4 win and a chance at the premiership. MVP: Cooper Tonna |

A tough game today against an exceptionally strong St Pats team. The girls were excellent in attack, however were sloppy in defence. After a few basic errors the girls showed resilience in their performance to grind out a tough 28-24 win. Another strong performance from Bridget Shearer and Jorja Borg, however tough runs in trouble to lead the pack from Navara and Gese ensured the team remained undefeated in the regular season. |

After finishing up third on the ladder, John Therry went up against Mount Carmel. Our previous results against MTCC didn’t deter our boys and girls who went out with a lot of intensity. However this soon dwindled as Mount Carmel convincingly out performed us. Well done to everyone for not giving in until the final whistle despite MTCC’s significant lead. Final score = 29-6 |

Unfortunately the game ended 1-2. Lacking a goalkeeper we went down early but pulled one back quickly with a great solo effort from Liam Wicks. An error in judgement allowed the ball to bounce and their striker was able to run onto the ball directing his header over our helpless keeper’s waving arms. We played much better football and with Diego in goals, we would have comfortably won. Intermediate Boys Basketball
The Intermediate biys statted their day off against St John's Nowra and took a little bit of time to gel and get familiar with the team dynamics. After some adjustments, we went into the break leading 33 - 24, with Levi Nia and Rewa Takiari leadings our scorers.
We continued to fine tune at both ends of the court and were eventual winners 48 - 40.
Levi Nia - 15 points, 5/11 fg, 2 steals, 2 assists
Rewa Takiari - 10 points, 5/11 fg, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 assist
We played the final against a strong Corpus Christi team who defeated Edmund Rice by 4 points.
We adjusted our line up to push a tempo game and it paid off immediately with quick transition points and uncontested perimeter shots. Corpus remained in the game by a sole scorer hitting his outside shots and his penetrating drives. JT led at the break 31 - 24 with Marcus Feehan 10 points and Rewa Takiari 6 points.
We changed our defense to remove their key scorer from the game and the JT lead was extended to 20 points, leading 62 - 42 with 6 minutes remaining. All players were able to get on the scoresheet this game for a great team effort.

Junior Boys Basketball
This year saw us play a very good Edmond Rice team. We started the game well with Moni and Thomas making some great plays to give us an early lead. We missed some tough layups and struggled to find our man but still managed to hold onto a two point lead going into half time.
In the second half we started off strong and pushed out to a 6 point lead however we ran out of gas down the stretch and lost by 6 in the final minute.
The boys learnt a lot from the competition and look forward to it for next year.

Bill Turner Cup Round 3 - Vs St Gregory’s College
The JTCC headed up to Badgally Hill to take on a strong St Greg’s team who has had some success in this competition, reaching the semi-finals last year. As we drove into the college grounds, the boys were a little spooked and overwhelmed. Not a good start to the pre-game warm-up, which was deflated and lacking the “up beat” attitude the boys usually have.
Team selections are always tough to make when there are talented players in your squad, and some part needs to be laid on my shoulders for the final result. Our young technical players were selected to match our opposition and they competed well, but lacked the hunger and competitiveness and were soon down 3 goals in 12 minutes. Heads lowered, negative chatter increased, but the boys played on and soon more goals poured in as the St Greg’s audience cheered maroon and blue. We succumbed to a 7 goal deficit in the first half as the boys' commitment was their flaw. Great words by Jon Vasilopoulos increased the attitude from the boys and after some more substitutions, the JTCC team ripped into the game in a manner that reflected their skill and ability.
The passing, movement, communication was so much better and soon we were in the opposition half having clear shots at goal. We soon contributed to the scoresheet and finally the game came to a close at 9 - 1, after the referee abandoned the game due to a player infringement.
Some great second half performances from Norman Hachem in goals, our Year 7 debutants Floilan Maganola, Lucas Alvarado who matched their opposition in skill and effort and our team captain, Brooklyn Osborne, who never gave up and continued to chase, tackle, clear and led the JT team.
To reach round 3 in the BT CUp is a sound effort and I am sure the boys enjoyed the experience and learned something from the 2023 campaign they can take on their journey.
Looking forward to 7-10 Boys Diocesan Soccer play-offs in a few weeks.

NSWCCC Teams
Remember that there is a new way to nominate individual sports for NSWCCC. This portal is open now and all students wanting to trial for Southern Country and NSWCCC representative teams are to ensure they register by the appropriate CLOSING DATE.

Please note that some sports are selected by individual trials, and these can be held throughout NSW. Individual nominations require students to make their own way to and from selections.
Selection in the following sports: Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Touch Football, AFL (Boys) and Football are done through the Wollongong Diocese carnivals by way of representing John Therry at these respective carnivals.
Selection in the following sports: AFL (Girls), Baseball, Basketball, Cricket – Girls, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby, Softball, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball will need to be done via individual nomination and selections.
